2014 GMC Sierra Denali Pickup Truck Review and Road Test

  • Join me as I take a look at the 2014 GMC Sierra Denali pickup. I'll test towing, hauling, handling and more. While many have derided the 2014 revision of GM's upscale pickup as uncompetitive, it has class leading towing, power, fuel economy and payload numbers. Just watch out, it'll cost you as it also has one of the steeper price tags.

    Since you asked, I say I'm not at all crazy about the squared wheel wells. The design is pointless, like the rest of the truck. Seems they're squared off to accentuate the squareness of the body, which is, again, pointless.
    I'm a pickup guy.
    I'm a Ram guy.
    On my fourth Ram since 2004, and a Ram guy for good reason.
    My only interest in the Denali is the 6.2.
    I think the pricing of the Denalis is prohibitive and confiscatory.
    Thank you Alex.
    You're the best in the business.

    shouldn't the 0-60 time on the yukon denali be the same as the sierra denali since they have the same engines? y is the denali so much slower

  • @ethanlights
    @ethanlights 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    For that much $$$ I would think they could use real wood. The Yukon Denali does. SO DOES THE F150 AT A LOWER PRICE POINT!

    Square wheel wells FOR EVER. I think the square wheel wells make the look of the trucks. Ford has used them in the past, so has Dodge. GM isn't weird for using them, they are setting the styling pace.

  • @Dr_Xyzt
    @Dr_Xyzt 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I like the square wheel wells. In engineering school, I found no truly appreciable benefit to round ones. It's also easier to get the sprayer nozzle in there to wash mud out.
    I like the single outlet exhaust. There's no point in being pretentious.
    I like the gauge cluster. They're styled like clocks.
    I like the pushrod engines. Again in engineering school, I learned how the design works and am behind it 100%.
    I don't like the 4600 pound weight in the RCSB configuration. The aluminum fords weigh 4000. Aluminum bodies would be nice.

    Every brand truck say`s that truck can tow whether it`s 10,000lbs to 12,000lbs it really can`t... I mean If you really had to it would but would have a very hard time towing that something! If you were ever to tow anything all the time the choice is plane and simple.... That choice would have to be a Diesel!! There really the only truck that can tow up to 25,000 to 31,200lbs do to strong motor which is a diesel,transmission,frame, and suspension for towing. But now were getting in to this grill part the GM has a great looking grill but I personally like the newer 2015 f-150 grill 5X`s better but then again the only reason I am saying that is because I am a true Ford guy, and a true Ford guy will like nothing else but Ford. But I mean both trucks have there up`s and downs but if I were ever going to drive two trucks it would be first the F-150 then the Sierra plane and simple and now for guy`s that are GM fans it might be the other way around maybe not.

    still NO REAR AC vents for crew passengers or dogs..........come on GMC, its the hottest summer ever......went to buy one of these, had to cancel deal because my kid nearly got heatstroke in cab as I was freezing while driving,,,,

  • @1guyin10
    @1guyin10 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Ford F150 4x4 crew is about 300 lbs heavier than the corresponding Ram or Chevy so they don't have to shave nearly as much to match Ford. It will be interesting to see what the aluminum F150 can do when the GM/Ford 10 speed transmissions come out in a year or so. Less 500 lbs and with a 10 speed, that Denali might return mid to upper 20's highway with the 6.2 . That would be sweet.

    GM thought they had a good thing here but failed. Although the backseat has more leg room than previous generation they failed with the position, height/angle & head/back rest of the seats. It is pretty uncomfortable for people 6ft or taller especially on long trips. My boss has one & the crew & I all take turns sitting up front because no one wants to sit in back. I think they failed somewhat on the interior too because it already looks dated.

    If GM would step up to keyless enter an push button start, and a slightly larger fuel tank then I would consider them. Ram has an available 32 gal tank, Ford has an available 36 gal while GM only has a 26 gal tank.

    Alex. You are the first reviewer to talk about the short headrest in the back seats. Very dangerous in even the slightest rear ender, and almost criminal on gm not to provide better safety esp. for a 60 k vehicle

    The Ram's 8-speed was one of the pioneers in truck transmissions but it is not flawless. The 8-speed in the Ram can feel very ponderous in gear choice and could use a computer remapping, I think it would help.

    Very impressive payload and towing numbers plus hwy mileage on the GM twins and something I need for my purposes (travel trailer plus family). Due to towing and payload needs, I can't knock the current gen 2014 F-150 Ecoboost (Lariat) model off my list - especially with the max tow and max payload options. Incentives are available as well, which make them more attractive and the rear seat is very accommodating with proper back plus headrest in the Ford compare to GM. My family has both GM and Ford trucks, but I'm open to all, including the Toyota Tundra.

    I love the look of these new gmc Sierra. I've never been a big gm guy but these new Sierra's I could see my self driving. I'm not crazy about this Denali package tho because there's nothing I hate more than chrome. I especially like the square wheel well design. I think it helps with the looks of the truck tremendously and it would probably help clear larger tires which is a plus. I like your reviews because I feel your fair and real. Most of these truck reviewers are so biased it makes me want to throw up. the only thing that concerns me about gm trucks is long term reliability. I dont lease trucks nor do I trade them every couple years. If I buy a new truck i'm keeping it for at least 10 years.

    Love this truck but would of course be waiting for the 2015 which will have the super new 8 speed built by GM, that is one solid transmission, that coming from my owing a new 2015 C7 corvette, great transmission, the current 6 speed can be a little quirky on some GMC trucks...Also, magnetic ride will also be available on the 2015 version of this truck, basically eliminating the Ram coil spring advantage when it comes to ride quality. Counting out the current generation F150 is obviously wrong here, given its interior is actually really nice and offers more interior room. Plus the current gen F150 offers such amazing variants as the Raptor, now that is one amazing truck with off road capability that not one of these competitors can remotely come close to, foreign or domestic. That Raptor is one sweet on road ride as well its 6.2L being a real performer that is not to be over looked.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      While the Tundra has improved lately, their sales are less than 1/4 of GM's pickup volume and Nissan's Titan's sales are lower than the Honda Ridgeline at about 2% of GM's sales. Just 1300 units shipped last month vs 59,000 from GM, 71,000 from Ford and 42,000 from RAM.

    • @jeremysautomobile
      @jeremysautomobile 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex on Autos So maybe they aren't "huge" players, but the Tundra is here to stay and in my city of Grand Rapid Michigan I have more than one Toyota dealer with Tundras to sell. I don't know if I would choose one over the other options, but it is a viable option. Thanks for your response.

      Alex on Autos Who gives a sh*t about "sales numbers"? That does not necessarily mean that one truck is better than others. It just means that people are "brand whores" or "brand loyalists" rather than buying the most reliable, best quality, and what fits one's needs. Notice I didn't bring an specific brand into the debate.

      According to the paperwork GM sent with the car, the wood isn't real. However this may be different in different countries because many car makers switch out the fake wood for real wood in Canada for instance.
