The trucks are shipped from the factory with extra pressure in the tires to prevent flat spots. They might have not adjusted to correct tire pressure before giving it to you, because based on my experience the ride in this vehicle is quite impressive.
GMC lists max conventional trailering for the 4X4 Crew Cab with the 5.3-liter V8, 5' 8" box and 3.23 rear axle at 6,600 pounds. 3.42 axle = 9,600 pounds 3.73 axle = 11,200 pounds
To be honest, you don't see them much anymore unless it's on a lower end trim. The pickup segment is the last to adopt HID as it trickles down from luxury cars. LED is next and LED foglights and taillights are here, too.
Excellent review as always Steve! Maybe you can answer this...I do a lot of night driving and would appreciate and expect HID headlights on a 50k truck. The technology (in cars at least) is now almost 15 years old. Some cars are done with HID and going to LED. Why are so many premium vehicles still using halogen headlights?
Great review! Certainly these new generation of 4 door pickups make for great long distance commuters. The long wheelbase makes them comfortable an stable on highways, the great height gives you great visibility... And the bed has enough space for all the luggage your wife can dream off...
I'm not sure why he said the ride is rougher. I have the current model silverado ltz z71 and test drove a new silverado z71 and it was night and day. Huge improvement.
I would leave it stock and bolt up the steelies from the base model for the sleeper effect. Then get the optional split-6-spoke 22" wheels for everyday use due to the thinner sidewall for better rigidity.
I need help deciding. I drive daily 30+ miles and I do sometimes haul an ATV or a dirt bike, I was deciding a Canyon but the gas mileage is no different from the sierra... although it's easier to park and stuff I still have friends that are 200+ lbs I would doubt we would fit comfortably in the canyon(we go out at least twice a month or so)
Steve, overall, great review. Thanks for including the air-conditioned seats and the fan exhaust segment. I have to respectfully disagree with you regarding the tailgate and cargo box. At 4:15, you discuss the differences between the GM/ Chevy and Ford tailgate/ cargo entry. "There's no cutting edge cleverness here, unless you consider the new bumper corner step which aren't quite as handy as Ford's tailgate step." The Ford tailgate feature is a novelty item that looks cute, but in reality, will not last the test of time. Have you seen what the bulges do to building materials such as sheet rock, when it is laid flat in the bed? The results are not pretty to say the least. There are 6 steps involved in opening the Ford tailgate, which only has a 350lb weight limit (something that they don't mention very often). Keep that in mind for construction workers carrying heavy tools in and out, and with the 36,000 mile warranty, that truck owner is going to think twice about using the tailgate ladder novelty. Compared with GM's rear corner step, it is a 2-step process to enter and exit the truck, with no moving parts. Your truck as tested, had the available GM spray-on bed-liner, upper tie downs and also comes with available LED track lighting. The latter 2 options while not "cutting edge cleverness" as you would put it, are highly functional and something that is not available with Ford, Dodge or Toyota. At 4:18, you show your children in the back seat, with 1 seat up. I'm surprised that GM didn't send you the available storage tub for underneath the seats. It's an excellent dealer installed option using a T-4 head for securing the fasteners, and contours with the seats. Cargo netting makes it convert from 1 storage tub to 3, and is a great spot to store items like tie-down straps, bike helmets, backpacks, etc. And one last feature, my favorite on the truck, and the least technologically advanced, is the hanging file folder section in the center console. Excellent place for vehicle maintenance records, business clients, etc.
Touch screen is in pretty much every vehicle these days, including the other truck brands. It's also so luxurious because he's reviewing one of the highest trim levels you can get with that truck. That thing is not a base model.
Looking into purchasing this truck. The dealer is asking for $22,500. Inside and out in excellent condition and has 105,200 miles on it. Is it worth the price asked?
This was the first video I've seen of yours and I must say good review. I like the looks of both GM trucks but I favor the bow tie with the z-71 grille. I must agree with plutonium9 about the absence of HID's on a 50K truck, for that amount of $ they need to be included. Also GM's always had lower step-in heights so I see no need for those obtrusive assist steps. They no doubt get dinged up if 1 were to go off-road. gm needs to consider those power steps that tuck away...especially for 50K.
No one is saying the other trucks suck because the ride isn't as good. Besides in the half ton segment, coil springs in the rear are more than enough for what the majority of half ton owners use them for. There's still leaf springs on the HD rams. But yeah, the ride quality should matter in trucks, because if they can slap on a $50k price tag, it better be top notch you know?
So let me ask you this you mention many ports to charge the cuestión is are they charge the phone while truck is turn off because my 2002 gmc does change
What are talking about, the rams don't have airbags standard on the rear coils. Some people add them on later, and I've never heard of them giving anyone grief. If they did blow, it's almost certainly because someone went way over the max payload.
Hey Steve, question for you, Sierra 1500 or Canyon for an every day driver with 30+ miles one way on the highway? I'm looking for a truck that I can put a plow on and not have to worry about getting stuck.
what would be the best truck ever would be if GMC made a new Canyon with very similar interior/exterior styling and the same v6 and v8s with cylinder deactivation thats in the sierra. Lots of people, myself included, don't really want the giant 1/2 ton truck with it's poor fuel economy and parking difficulties that goes with it 80% of the time in just day to day living, but love the power and its capability 20% when i'm towing my boat or travel trailer. that'd be awesome!
Basically, I love the truck, but for >$50k cost, I'm disappointed that for what we would need it to be able to do - tow a 7K lb travel trailer, it would not do the trick. I'm assuming more money to get the max tow capabilities and higher fuel cost due to higher rear gear ratio?
What a shame! my 04 sierra gets better gas mileage than something 10 years newer, granted i put on a cold air intake and dual exhaust and im even running with Cooper AT tires. also is it me or does the 2014 seirra front remind you of the f250 grill? which to me is a good thing.
It may have the best ride quality but its gonna be a expensive when later down the road them air bags blow, I personally like the way chevy is staying true to the ole truck style suspension, replacing them dodge's air bags on them trucks are just too expensive to maintain...
"...but the on-road ride feels noticeably 'truckier' than before..." What's the matter with that? Frankly that's what so many of us pick-up drivers like about our trucks and the way we like them to sound.
Jim -- I think some full-sized half-ton trucks have recently become car-like in the suspension and handling. In fact, Ram uses coil spring rear suspension in their trucks (the only drawback? -- less payload capacity in the bed of the truck.) Nothing wrong with that. And I'm also in your camp as well, I want my truck to feel well... like a truck.
Too bad they are still using the auto locking Eaton rear differential. It works great, until it doesn't after only a few harsh lock-ups xD nice GMC tho, I like those trucks 👌
The truck looks pretty good. But $51,000 is just too much for a gasoline pickup. I would stick with a Silverado though. I like the less bulky look of it. And lol at the hot air blowing out to the back of the seats. I paid for the truck, and I ain't charging to drive you around. Your lucky it's not blowing out flames lol
Anyone realize this isn't the top model sierra? You didn't see the 6.2 liter V8 at around 450hp rated to tow up to 12,000 lbs as the best in class of light trucks across any brand
6,600 towing on one of the popular build spec trucks (crew cab, short box, 4x4, 5.3, and some crappy rear gearing ratio)? Is GM joking with this stuff, I think some of the mid sized trucks have a higher tow capacity than 6,600.
The rear seats are a danger to children in the rear seats. With no rear air conditioner, hot air is blown directly onto kids in car seats from the cooled front seats. GM needs to recall this truck and fix this issue before a kid or baby gets overheated from the hot air blowing out of the front seat vents. A baby in a car seat could be in real danger if the front passenger turns on the cooled front seats!
just one thing to say.. 2004 nissan titan has a little bit more torque than this new 5.3 ecotec...the sad thing about it is that the nissan is like a 10 year old truck!!! im a chevy fan and a nissan fan but the 5.3 ecotec should have put out atleast 400 pounds of torque. Anybody agree? Or check out the 5.7 on the tundra which came out when? 2007? right? well even that engine makes more power then this new 5.3 ecotec. But still even with that issue im sure that 5.3 is still a very good engine.
Funny he doesn't tell you how much oil he had to add and how far he had to go to find the 0W20 DEXOS 1 oil which is the only oil GM will let you get near the new engine.
the stupid thing is when people talk about dodges ride being smother so all other trucks suck. there fucking trucks not a car u want a smooth ride get a car. and with that ride u give up a stable truck. u dont put coil shocks in the back of a truck
I'm not sure if the average working man can afford a $50,000 truck :/ The new mid size segment is looking more and more appealing if you don't make over $80k a year.
I cant stand the suspension on the Ram everytime you hit a bump on say the rear driver the wheel jumps and spins and make the truck move side to side wen going fast. Plus my god these the ram has so much body roll you feel like you are going to flip turning sharp. The sierra has a much better suspension with the leafs.
I honestly don't understand why they have kept gmc on so long, I see nothing that's more "luxurious" lmao about it, over a chevrolet. There is no difference between a tahoe ltz and a yukon denali, yet people are dumb enough to pay $10k more, just so they can appear to be a "somebody". Same vehicles, with different headlights and grille whoop dee doo, sure impresses the shit out of me.
I think GMC has a good reputation. It's the truck if you don't want your truck with the Chevy Bow Tie. The model shown here actually undercuts pricewise their competition (Ram 1500 Laramie and Ford F-150 Platinum) by $4000. At the same time, I can understand your rationale.
Dylan, I thought the same way when I compared the Escalade, Yukon Denali and Tahoe together. In 2011 the only difference between the Escalade and the Denali was a more supple leather and I think 5 hp. But when we compared the Denali to the Tahoe it was like night and day as far as quality. The dealer let us keep the Tahoe and we found trim coming loose, not good! We settled on the Yukon Denali and got a great end of the year price. I just couldn't see paying that much more for fluff and chrome for the Escalade. I'm sold on GMC.
3.42 axle = 9,600 pounds
3.73 axle = 11,200 pounds
Why in the hell would the host or anyone for that matter, use a bike rack to carry your bicycle? Why not use the dang truck bed?
I'll give you an example; I own a Tacoma and have a Thule hitch mount bike rack that allows me to carry my 2 bikes AND fill the bed with other stuff.
There you got quite a response....LOL
We were in a small New England town packed with vacationers where roads are narrow and parking spots tight. I'm sure this exacerbated the feeling.
Max trailering package with the bigger gear could take it up to over 11,000 pounds but it's not available at launch.
To be honest, you don't see them much anymore unless it's on a lower end trim. The pickup segment is the last to adopt HID as it trickles down from luxury cars. LED is next and LED foglights and taillights are here, too.
Thanks for the test drive! This is the truck that I'm seriously considering.

The technology (in cars at least) is now almost 15 years old. Some cars are done with HID and going to LED. Why are so many premium vehicles still using halogen headlights?
Good Review with some Great Points covered that will help me with my review of the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 CC SLT review here in Dubai.
Great review! Certainly these new generation of 4 door pickups make for great long distance commuters. The long wheelbase makes them comfortable an stable on highways, the great height gives you great visibility... And the bed has enough space for all the luggage your wife can dream off...

Very nice truck from gm, that front grille looks amazing. As always, great review Steve!
Really thorough review, Steve. Thanks.
Hello Steve,What you think is the best, this one or the ram 1500 laramie?
Thanks.
Another great and very comprehensive review!
is the turning radius better than before or is it the same ?
Absolutely!
Great review as always!
im 16 and i park my dads f-350 duelie all the time so dont complain about parking this truck (he has the 2015 model of this too)
Steve, are you on the list to drive the Ram 1500 Eco Diesel when it comes out? It sounds interesting.
I would leave it stock and bolt up the steelies from the base model for the sleeper effect. Then get the optional split-6-spoke 22" wheels for everyday use due to the thinner sidewall for better rigidity.
Steve how would you compare the Sierras ride to the ram 1500. I've ridden in a ram that's why I ask!
I need help deciding.

pretty good review if i must say... keep up the good work
Looking into purchasing this truck. The dealer is asking for $22,500. Inside and out in excellent condition and has 105,200 miles on it. Is it worth the price asked?
Definitely a great price. Hope you bought the truck, I bought a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 5 months ago and I love this truck.

That light house was the Nubble light house up in Maine, and in and around York!
Indeed it was!
One of my favorite area's to go when I need a get away.

Red is the best color for this car so cooooool
i love the lights
we need a comparison test of the f150 vs Chevy/GMC please
Me three! Tundra asap please!
Hey Steve, question for you, Sierra 1500 or Canyon for an every day driver with 30+ miles one way on the highway? I'm looking for a truck that I can put a plow on and not have to worry about getting stuck.
I'd probably go with a Canyon V6 Long Box but if you're going to plow perhaps the Sierra would make more sense. That's a toss-up.
I'm on it.
what would be the best truck ever would be if GMC made a new Canyon with very similar interior/exterior styling and the same v6 and v8s with cylinder deactivation thats in the sierra. heated rear seats ?
I think they should offer the 6.2 liter V8 in the single cab short bed configuration.
2014 MDX with AWD tech and advance packages please
There're Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan as the competition though. You're right LOL! but you gotta admit they're at least getting better
Basically, I love the truck, but for >$50k cost, I'm disappointed that for what we would need it to be able to do - tow a 7K lb travel trailer, it would not do the trick. I'm assuming more money to get the max tow capabilities and higher fuel cost due to higher rear gear ratio?

also is it me or does the 2014 seirra front remind you of the f250 grill? which to me is a good thing.
Wow actually looks good for a GMC
Good honest review, dodge ram is still better than the other trucks including ford
Me, too!
Who says it was empty? It was full of beach chairs, etc.
I gotta agree they do look a lot like Fords when I first saw one the front and reminds me of an F 250 so gotta agree on that one
Why don't he test drive a regular cab Sierra? And why didn't he tell us about the other two available engines?
my f150 get 15.9 to 16.3 mpg and I got the 5.0 4x4 in the city
My brother has a 2010 ram and its not really that good. He is upgrading to a 2014 sierra in a few weeks.
I'm a big Ford fan, but this is a really nice truck! Watch out F150! :)
It may have the best ride quality but its gonna be a expensive when later down the road them air bags blow, I personally like the way chevy is staying true to the ole truck style suspension, replacing them dodge's air bags on them trucks are just too expensive to maintain...
how can you say that its a stiff ride when its not even broken in yet??
Very nice truck!
for a viewer this is a like for u sir
Love this truck.
"...but the on-road ride feels noticeably 'truckier' than before..." What's the matter with that? Frankly that's what so many of us pick-up drivers like about our trucks and the way we like them to sound.

2:51 that must have felt so good.
Finally a good looking Chevy truck :D And to complain about a rough ride wtf its a truck not a Caddy!
Why did he run E85 when testing mileage? E85 fuel is not good for mileage, and does anyone run E85.
I was looking to save some money up front and try it out for power/mileage.
good looking truck
Very nice truck.
With the max tow package it will tow 11500 lbs. With the 6.2 and that package, 12000 lbs.
theres other option like the sle
Too bad they are still using the auto locking Eaton rear differential. It works great, until it doesn't after only a few harsh lock-ups xD nice GMC tho, I like those trucks 👌

he's right as tested thats this trucks max, its all gearing
It needs duel exhaust like the ram
6,600 towing on one of the popular build spec trucks (crew cab, short box, 4x4, 5.3, and some crappy rear gearing ratio)? Is GM joking with this stuff, I think some of the mid sized trucks have a higher tow capacity than 6,600.
People of course all truck brands at gonna look similar and share similarities! Just think to your self how different can they make these trucks??
You forgot the Denali trim.
Go GM!!!!
American trucks are the best!
Thats a big miss. Heated steering wheel?
The rear seats are a danger to children in the rear seats. With no rear air conditioner, hot air is blown directly onto kids in car seats from the cooled front seats. wow, really surprised about the poor ride and the lack of lane departure option. Kinda disappointing. I guess my choice would be the RAM.
i like the GMC Sierra but ill stick with my RAM 1500
GMC trucks look the best imo.
dont scrape the bumper with its 4in of ground clearance
This is a nice truck. Its way better looking than the new Silverado, which is very ugly. But GM really needs to lose the column shifter.
i like ford trucks but damn this is better looking by far!!
Funny he doesn't tell you how much oil he had to add and how far he had to go to find the 0W20 DEXOS 1 oil which is the only oil GM will let you get near the new engine.
That makes no sense man. They don't burn oil bro it's not a Dodge
Check the GM service bulletins, they are oil burners
because no one else make trucks like that lol. who the hell needs it?
Funny I see more SIlverado model in the street than Sierra.
Dee Jay silverado is cheaper thats Why
The RAM 1500 has the best ride quality in the segment.
Omg this city slicker should mever review another truck u
the stupid thing is when people talk about dodges ride being smother so all other trucks suck. there fucking trucks not a car u want a smooth ride get a car. and with that ride u give up a stable truck. u dont put coil shocks in the back of a truck
I'm not sure if the average working man can afford a $50,000 truck :/ The new mid size segment is looking more and more appealing if you don't make over $80k a year.
I with you my dads 2015 chevy duramax is way up 70k and 992 a month it to much
....thats what you call off-road.
Kinda embarrassing its not a truck its a damn luxury car whats up with a touch screen?
holy shit. you gotta be rich to afford a decent new pickup nowadays
If you're a carpenter I guess you can make it work. Pickup trucks are a working mans truck.
I honestly don't understand why they have kept gmc on so long, I see nothing that's more "luxurious" lmao about it, over a chevrolet. Trim packages man, trim packages.
to appear lak a sumbudy
