  • Grace Herpel was an avid runner with 5 long distance races planned for 2016. But after tearing her left meniscus during the Ocean City half marathon in April 2016, she feared she might never run again. Grace’s primary care doctor referred her to Dr. Miho Tanaka, orthopaedic surgeon and director of the Women's Sports Medicine Program at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Tanaka understood Grace’s determination and listened to her concerns. Based on Grace’s goal of getting back to her previous level of performance, they decided on surgery to repair the meniscus, followed by rehabilitation. One year later, Grace is back to running long distances and living the life she loves - a life in motion.

    This seems like a blown-out promotion of the center to me, more than actually a description/documentation of the problem at hand.
    I could find no mention of the grade of the tear, the procedure involved, the longevity of the treatment, risks or chances of the athlete getting an early O.A. in her later years.
    This is not a good example/documentation of a Doctor/Institute who wishes to put forth everything on the table in order for the patient to choose and decide. Looks more like an advert to sell a product.

      I had surgery to repair and rebuild my knees--both of them, after which I endured 12 weeks each of intense physical therapy and rehabilitation. I'm so glad I did. By having my knees rebuilt through the Fulkerson procedure, I won't have to receive knee replacements. I have two titanium rods, one on either side of my knees. If I do lose cartilage, I can now grow my own to replace what's lost. Should they need to suck out any torn or broken cartilage, (I have brittle cartilage disease), I can have it removed through an incision. The main thing is that I'm using very strong supplements that help me regrow cartilage, and I rehab from time to time to minimize any damage to my knees, and I'm 55 years young. My orthopedic surgeon also endorsed theh supplements I take, so it's all been worth it. No, he's not with Johns Hopkins, but that's not the point. There are lots of people who have had the same or similar types of surgery that I and she had, and we're all the better for everything we've endured for it, too. It takes a lot of discipline and a high pain tolerance, but most of all, it takes the will power and stamina to stay the course and stay on top of our game, if you know what I mean. The best news is that we've never had any rejections to these procedures, and too many people have suffered unduly after having replacements. I don't want to ever have to face that kind of danger, because it puts far more stress on our bodies.

    I had a medial meniscus horizontal tear back in 2003 walked around for 2 years before I got into surgery. The pain get progressively worse if not repaired. 18 years later no issues. The key for me was immediate next day physiotherapy. By the third day they were massaging my scars to break up the scar tissue and that wasn’t fun. I spent 4 weeks doing physio and went on my own doing the stretches and exercises required. I was about 37 at that time. Don’t skip out on the therapy! That was key for me!

      @@anmmannm4603 You can basicly never stop strengthening the leg. I mean, everybody should but uninjured people can get away with it and have only problems when they get old, but we are already injured people. It is like our joints tookk a short cut to the degenerated state and we now have to strengthen the muscles to take most of the load off the knee. So, I can't tell if he went on with PT during those 18 years but considering he went painfree during one third of a life he likely never stopped exercising.

    I would love some advice. I had 2 meniscus surgeries last year(2021), on the same knee , 6 months apart. I used to run often, mainly 5k distances...sometimes more, sometimes less. Since the surgery, my knee sometimes locks, my knee cap feels like its in the wrong position , I cant squat , I still can't put a lot of pressure or body-weight on my knee and despite trying, I certainly can't run . The pain is too intense. I've had intensive physiotherapy including some resistance work. The quad muscle above my knee is visibly smaller than the muscle on my 'healthy leg'. I am seriously wishing I hadn't gone ahead with both surgeries. Normal walking is fine, but even going up and down stairs, I can't bend my knee or put pressure on my knee like before. ..any advice would be a God send. Thanks.

      Hello ! How you doing after surgery now? Did you start running again?

  • @koe1
    @koe1 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I started running as a kid in the early 80s and stopped after a couple of years. I revisited running in my mid 30s to shed over 30 lbs of unwanted weight - which I ultimately did. I continued my running and biking regimen and unfortunately tore the meniscus in my left leg two years later. I had successful arthroscopic surgery at 38 years old and after a few weeks of healing and rehab I was running again. I did my first half marathon pushing 50 years of age and have continued running and biking ever since. I'm visiting an ortho today because I believe I have now torn my right leg meniscus at age 54. If that's in fact the case, I'll be getting another arthroscopic procedure done and then it's low impact workouts, like riding my bike, and perhaps doing "short runs" (5K) from here on in. Age and years of working out, especially intense workouts, will no doubt lead to an injury. That being said, you don't have to quit working out (especially if it's a passion and lifestyle choice) you just have to be smarter about how you do it. Your mind may still feel young, way into mid-life, but your body will sometimes remind you that you're no spring chicken. Stay healthy, my friends!

    Everyone is different. I limped around on and off for a year thinking it was a temporary injury which would ease off, but it didn't. I had no idea it was a tear. I had surgery at 40 and was told I should be okay in 3 weeks, that turned out to be wrong, it took 6 months for me to feel better. And now my knee pops every 5 mins when extending from a bent position, and it is also weak when I rise to my feet from sitting and takes about 30 secs to come to life when I start walking. It also aches in cold weather and I still get slight pain when I bend my knee with my heel going towards my ass. My surgery helped a bit, ( carried out in the UK ) but my knee is weak and still has issues ( I do loads of strength and conditioning on it ). Years of running and probably crap knee genetics ruined me.

    Hello, here is Korea 2 years ago I had surgery to suture the right meniscus medial root 2 years ago. It ruptured again in the same place on July 30. The suturing operation was successful 2 years ago, but I think the suture without improving the body imbalance led to the overall muscle imbalance. When the stiffness of the hip joint or the stiffness of the right shoulder is relieved, the left and right balance feels like the knee pain is there, but the overall balance feels better. Do I need surgery again? The inner part of the cartilage plate is said to be difficult to regenerate because there are no blood vessels, but I've heard that it can be regenerated with synovial fluid. What do you think? And I wonder if it is right for the overall muscle balance to deteriorate after surgery without correcting the body imbalance.

    Got keyhole surgery for torn meniscus. Holes closed up very well and for all intents and purposes disappeared. Unfortunately the pain and discomfort has lasted three weeks so far. Ofcourse they make it sound like its like gettingbs tooth pulled out,it takes a lot of physio and rest to get better..im a truckdriver and my future depends on my recovery..but i must say .The surgeon is a genius.

    i had a tear on my medial meniscus a while ago. the pain will be constant for the next 2-3 days. if u are taking care of it and not aggravating it, it should heal gradually. however, after 6 months of constant sports, my tear became a detachment and it got significantly worse. a tear wont put you out for good. even without surgery, i was fine running and jumping for over 5 months until it deatached.

      Yeah, but what was the other option? Blows my mind the fear everyone has to potential meniscus repairs or little partial meniscectomies because of people complaining like you. When the cartilage is torn leaving it unoperated is worse cause it leads to further degradation, potential knee locking and catching, and complication activating leg muscles. Man, surgery is not cool but it tries to fix what is already fucked. Besides, after a meniscectomy or meniscus repair you should do PT or strengthening exercises PERIOD for the rest of your life to remain painfree.

      I agree! I did Physical Therapy a few times, tried to keep moving and it worked for years then my knee started locking and clicking. It was happening everytime I would stand or walking up and down stairs. That was when I finally had surgery. I had a medial meniscus tear, I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis with Osteoarthritis. So surgery doesn't have to be the first option.

    I’ve had 5 meniscal surgeries and repairs with extensive sport for many years. They behaving like this is some unique treatment? Also - no - specialist women’s surgeons? For women? Lol.. a great surgeon can do both men and females. Problem is some legs are heavy - and these women orthopods can’t handle the difficult manual jobs of orthopeadics - so they try market the procedure to women. There’s no actual reason to have a meniscal repair under a “womans” specialists. Sure the locum of injury is different - sure the Q angle is slightly different. Sure the rehab has some different considerations... but no - women’s meniscal surgery is nothing unique or special to women. Pure American marketing. This entire thing was so cringe... a meniscal repair is one of the most simple procedures in orthopeadics with great return to sport.. (and does lead to eventual degeneration anyways - due to changing loading forces)... but this is as if she had some complex surgery... ummmm - no... some orthopeadic surgeries are modern day miracles and absolutely tough and strenuous work. I’ll be picking the surgeon whose hands are powerful and precise. This is like a feminist add rather than something of substance. I’ve seen athletic male orthopeadic surgeons litteraly sweat from hard manual Labour of an acl and meniscal repair... and they trying to sell a petite orthopeadic surgeon here - that needs assistants to do most of the work. Lol.
