The Biggest Mistake People Make After Knee Meniscus Surgery

  • People that have had knee meniscus surgery often run into continued knee pain, swelling and even loss of knee motion after having a meniscus surgery.
    The expectation was to get back to normal, be able to walk, do stuff at home, be active with family, and possibly even exercise.
    But when the knee pain comes back (or never goes away) and there is knee swelling, it’s concerning and disappointing because it looks like the surgery didn’t work.
    Usually, there’s just been a mistake made when setting expectations about how a meniscus heals after surgery.
    A meniscus takes 6-12 months to heal depending on the severity of the meniscus problem. But most people are told they only need 2-3 months. In fact, people that do physical therapy, only attend for 2-3 months. This just isn’t enough time to fully heal the meniscus to confidently get back to normal.

    Jumping in because reading youtube comments, post op, had me so down, and in total buyers remorse. I tore my lateral meniscus 10/22 - had surgery 9/23. In the time in-between, i figured the pain was from stress induced weight gain and being out of shape, on an old acl repair, so i began to workout 5 days a week. Lost 40 lbs in 11 months, strengthened my everything to better support my knee, and none of that ultimately helped. I finally went for the MRI, then surgery.
    I am now just past 4 months post op and i feel fantastic. The first couple months were pretty rough, especially when reading all the comments of people being up and walking within a week......But here i am now, 18 weeks out and i am back to most physical exercising - hour long walks took me almost 3 months - going down hill can be rough, but up is amazing. I can skip, jog, do the running man, and zero pain. I do low impact workouts, pilates machine, weight training, fast long walks, 100+ squats a day and so on. I do have a new click i hear sometime , and at a certain degree, a click that i feel. I avoid pushing into that second click that i feel to avoid any arthritic type rubbing.
    Looking back, zero buyers remorse for now. I feel almost back to, pre meniscus tear, normal. I cannot get fully into child's pose as i think my muscles are still tight from over a year of the torn meniscus limiting me.
    I should also mention, my injury was not really painful. I lost range of motion past 90degrees and had major swelling. and stability loss. But no pain. My knee never locked up, and it only buckled a couple times from sloppy movements.
    I hope this helps lifts someones spirits.

      I think you are @celladorz. Wish I could contact outside this. I hurt my knee running...Dr's goofed around with pt, drugs, just burning time so I could mri. Finally got an mri, it's a root tear meniscus, tear off the bone. My surgeon wants to get going, but I've got to go to Europe for several months, no time to rehab first (maybe 6 weeks...I have a wife and a 4 year-old--can't leave her with bags, stroller...and blood clot concer flying?). I'm 62, I do sprint triathlons, 10k...not now. I've been on the elliptical anyway, working thru pain, but I watch this and I'm sooooo depressed. I'm worried I won't make it thru Europe until fall surgery, and even then, this video says 6 to 12 months....lordy, no workout for that period? Some days no pain, others like today excruciating...anyway, there should be a group 4 this...by the way, add I'm an alcoholic 10 years clean, no smoking either....😂😅😂 Just trying to wrap my mind around this...

      I am a physically active person and I started having pain in my left knee. Though it was not stopping me from daily routine, I was unable to run or sit down and stretch my knee beyond 90 degrees. I tried recovery for sometime but it was a mental block as I could not run and play badminton and other favourite stuff. Finally I got my MRI done and it was grade 2 tear for medial meniscus. I just had surgery 3 weeks ago. Currently on limited mobility and doing the therapy recommended by Physio. I am happy to see your post that you are back to normal after 18 weeks. I don’t have much pain now but I am ready to invest some more time on strengthening knee and hoping to get back to my best in next 6 months.

Still mild swelling after exercise, so I elevate and ice the knee daily. I think "listening" to your knee is the best personal advice and Yes. do not overdo even if you think you are fine!

    I am so glad that I came across your video! Everything you are saying is what happened to me. I had a great Orthopedic surgeon last year in June. And I was able to walk within a week with no pain. I did the follow ups with him and all was well. I'm an Event Coordinator and I was even able to go to 2 conventions at the end of August. That was the big test and I had no problems. But nothing was ever mentioned that it would take 6-12 months to completely heal and recover. It's been 9 months since the surgery and a couple of days ago I went to a museum which lasted all day. Well now it's 3 days later, and I got up from the couch and I am limping. I walked a bit to stretch my knee out and the pain went away, and I'm walking fine. But it is a red flag that I need to do something about it. And pay closer attention to my knee and not overdo things. I thought I was being careful, but I was wrong. To the people out there reading this, I hope your surgery goes well and like he said, listen to your knee. Good luck to you all! : )

    I am 10 weeks out from meniscus surgery and I had relatively low pain and very good mobility during the first month afterwards. But as time went on, I became more sore, stiffer, and at times was in great pain. Speaking to my surgeon, he thought I should continue my physical therapy for another month before thinking about a cortisone shot in the knee. Listening this to video, I learned to lower my expectations of quick recovery and what I need to do going forward. So, thank you for readjusting my expectations and setting out a road map for a pain free recovery.

      Just like with surgeries - every knee's requirements for healing is potentially different... my PT was fine with me doing another 2 weeks of PT, but we made the decision together to discharge since I've hit all the classic numbers and my day to day movement (walking, stairs, et cetera) I'm pain-free - age, previous strength (prior to my surgery I did everything I could to bulk up my quads/hamstrings/gastroc) all factor into the amount of rehab and time is needed to fully heal.
      At this point, I'm confident I'll be back to good in another 2-3 months - but again, really trying to not rush it.
      Hope you start feeling better soon Emmett!

    I am so sad this is exactly what happened to me. Had my surgery and was doing great. My surgeon was shocked how well I recovered. Went to Disney two months after surgery and was fine. When I got back from Disney I saw my surgeon he told me to start doing things such as walking the dogs, working in the yard etc. He said then I will know what I can and can't do. The surgeon said I can't harm the knee. Well he was wrong. I wish I would have listened to myself and saw your video and was careful because now I am in worst shape then before surgery. Now he is saying I need a knee replacement. I am in pain and limping! I wasn't even limping before the torn meniscus surgery just in pain, but nothing like I am now. I feel like he wanted me to mess it up so then they can make more money off me. What can I do at this point to get back to where I was I am trying not to do the replacement? I have had a steroid shot which didn't work and now getting gel injections. Have one more to go. I have a trip planned to Texas and Utah and still plan on going but need to do something.

    I had a minor medial tear of my meniscus in my left knee. Also, MRI showed a lot of arthritis. The worst was the small amount of space I had developed between the tibia and the femur bone on the inside of the knee. I had surgery 2 months ago, which he removed the minor tear, but the arthritic inside of the knee pain is the worst. He said he scraped as much arthritis from that part of the knee joint as he could. He's a reputable surgeon in the practice, but not very informative at all. After surgery I found your channel and have worked the heck out of my glutes and quads. After 7 weeks I still had a lot of pain. My family doctor told me anytime the bone is scraped it can take up to 3 months for inflammation to go down. As of the past 2 weeks I have been taking Physical therapy 2 times a week along with the exercises at home. I am glad I revisited your channel tonight as I was getting pretty discouraged because of the pain. Though I am 66, I have always been active, eat as healthy as I can and am not overweight. I have full range of motion, have never needed assistance from day one. Just dealing with the pain is the issue. I take 2 Ibuprofin and 1 tylenol per day. Thank you so very much for your insite, as it has helped me with my expectations.

      Oh no Latasha! It's okay! You just need to let go of the timeframes the doctor told you. Your knee can still heal...it just takes as long as it takes. You have to be very patient and don't over-do it with your meniscus...even if the surgeon told you it is okay to proceed. We've seen soooo many people go walking for exercise, even run at the surgeon's recommendation and they're just not ready yet. Then they get irritated and swollen in their knee. People are all unique and heal at different rates. You should feel no worse pain in your knee from anything you do. If you do feel pain, it's okay and you didn't over-do it if the pain subsides within 24 hrs.

      Hmmm. Meniscus repair? My understanding from what I've read, the meniscus does not get much blood flow and a meniscus repair takes upwards of 6 months or more to heal appropriately. A meniscectomy supposedly takes much less but that's not what I'm experiencing.
      Go easy...l know... it's a real drag...

      Hey Latasha, this happened to me, too. The doctor told me "see me next month," "see me next month" for nine months. I finally sought a second opinion and learned that the first surgery was botched. I recommend if your pain is unrelenting or acute to the point of nausea, seek a second opinion. I had two more surgeries after the botched one and now I am feeling excellent. I wish you the best xx.

      Hey Alison! We hope you heal really fast!!! Yes, using crutches can be very disruptive, especially if you have small children. Be okay with slowly weaning off the crutches and brace. Had a meniscus/cartilage surgery about a week ago. They removed 60% of posterior medial meniscus and 20% of patella lateral cartilage.
    The doctor told me that I can start walking right away. To get my ROM back to normal. I start walking bearing my weight on my left knee using a walker. After 3 days my knee start feeling painful and it swollen.
    I went to PT and was told I should wear crutches to begin with and do some exercises.

This is the 12th week and after some excercise it swelled up significantly to the point where walking for 10 minutes would hurt. My fysio did tell me it would probably be at least 6 months before I am back at 80% but this video definitely helped with me feeling down about the persistent swelling.

    • @8sun52
      @8sun52 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hope this info can help you or anyone else to put their meniscus situation into a little bit better perspective: I had a medial bucket handle meniscectomy the beginning of March '22. If I remember correctly now, around 3 months after the surgery I was able to get it at about 110° with some pulling it back with some pain.
      I also had substantial swelling at this point.
      At some point he removed some of the fluid with a needle.
      My surgeon said (from the MRI) I needed about 40% of the meniscus removed.
      Post surgery my surgeon did not mention anything about more meniscus being removed. Also he showed me the photographs and said I had absolutely no cartilage wear and I had been walking on this medial bucket handle meniscus tear for 5 months before the surgery! I'm just very, very lucky.
      I'm not overweight at all. That probably helps a lot. If anything I'm underweight.
      I was going to PT twice a week.
      My surgeon said my progress was a bit too slow and I might need "manipulation" , however, on the next visit I got it to about 140°.
      He was encouraged but he wanted me to get it back all the way to heal against rear end or close to it.
      It's been a few weeks past 6 months and my progress is in an inch or two every three weeks or so, but it seems I'm kind of hitting a brick wall here.
      I've been searching online and I found a website that recommends warm compresses for 20 minutes and then massaging the scar area for 10 minutes or so to loosen the scar up. That's what's inhibiting the range of motion (ROM), the scar tissue.
      The warm compresses brings blood to that area which helps the recovery process.
      At this point I only have very slight swelling.
      Knowing what I know now with all the information, everybody will have a different recovery time that's influenced by the type of meniscus tear and various other contributors.
      My next visit with my surgeon is in October.

      @@InfectedoOG I'm glad it helped a bit. Yeah, there's some helpful info going around here and that's a good thing.
      One thing. My job is physical so a month before I went back to work, I spent about 2 days looking for knee sleeves to support my bad knee and possibly avoid my other knee from a possible meniscus tear. And, I tell you... I burnt myself out for two days looking all over but I wasn't going to give up.
      The thing about all these websites for products is what's number one or two on one website is down near four or five on another website. You don't know who or what to believe.
      I finally ran across this company Wonder-steps. Their knee sleeves are designed by some of the best orthopedic surgeons in the country. I try not to get blitzed by all these advertising slogans but they ARE really excellent. Their customer service IS excellent. These knee sleeves are REALLY very well made and very supportive. Just what I need.
      They have a lot of verified testimonials. I ordered another pair after looking over the quality and workmanship of the first pair I ordered.
      My surgery knee feels very supportive and stabilized as I walk up and down steps and walk along the walkway on my job.
      They still offer their summer 45% off and free shipping. They're made in the United States.
      wonder-steps.
      There is "com" after the dot. TH-cam system sometimes deletes comments with links.
      I'm not suggesting that you or anyone buy this and I'm not trying to tell you or anyone what to buy. Of course it's up to you, but I found this company by real experience and observation to be very reputable with truly high quality standards.

    By meniscus surgery, to be more specific you mean meniscus repair.
    This is the same info my surgeon told me; that a meniscus repair, which he did not advise for me, takes at least 6 months to recover from. The meniscus does not get good blood supply and heals very slowly.

      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey 22130tulips, yes any meniscus surgery - repair or removal.
      It does heal slow, but even slower than surgeons realize - expect 9-12 months to feel solid in your knee again. And that's assuming you do everything right without any complications during the recovery.

    • @8sun52
      @8sun52 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@epmanualphysicaltherapy I'm almost up to four month since my meniscectomy and I can bend my knee about 125°. But it's a little bit of pain in my knee getting to this range. Also some tightness. My good knee bends to about 150° (as probably is the average range of the human knee anatomy).

    I'm about 8 months after my surgery, and I'd say I'm about 80% healed. I was told it would be 3-6 weeks... I can now many times walk without a limp and I recently started to do squats with minimal weight. I also somewhat recently started climbing stairs without needing to place both feet on each step. It's been very slow but my biggest regret is not doing physical therapy soon after surgery. For some reason my surgeon told me I didn't need to if I could be active on my own.
    I ended up doing PT around months 3-4. Quad / leg atrophy I believe was the biggest problem for this long recovery. I was on crutches a month and a half before surgery and apparently my surgeon didn't notice my leg was already windling away. Post surgery my surgeon was also not very responsive when I would ask what type of pain I should be ok feeling. He would just say "you're fine" when I finally got to talk with him for 30 seconds. It was a very unsure period of time for myself as I had a dead quad and thought I was supposed to be running already 😂 PT helped get me back on track.
    My advice is go to PT. Don't let your muscles die on you. Without your legs muscles, your knee is under great strain! Not good for recovery.

I have had other people say they experienced the same thing as it often derives from a overcompensating in weight from the operated knee in the days/ weeks following surgery. I am slightly concerned as this had continued to stick around and doesn’t seem to be getting better - I wondered if you had any tips? Hoping I haven’t torn this one as well but not sure how I could as I didn’t do any intense exercise or twisting motions etc that could have caused a tear in the non operated knee

They’ve drained it and told me to ice more often and add compression. If I had known this would make my knee worse I would’ve kept pushing through with physical therapy therapy. I was doing PT 3 months prior to surgery and it was a very slow progress, but that slow progress was def better than this. This is too painful and too swollen to do anything 😢 before I was able to walk for an hour before feeling immense pain, now I can’t even walk for 3 minutes. @@epmanualphysicaltherapy Hi Doc. I have written to you before and you have been very helpful. That was before I went for surgery. It's almost a week now that I went for debridement, some meniscus surgery and removal of some small shattered bones. One was quite big I must say. Size of a tiny coun🤣

      I wanted to say size of a coin. Just continuing with what I was saying. Visiting my surgeon in 2 days time after the surgery. There is still some swelling and some manageable pain when I walk. I am glad I saw your video. So now I know what to expect and how to manage the healing process. Thank you for your great work.🤗

      I just had a partial meniscectomy and a lateral knee release ! It’s been 2 weeks and the pain is ridiculous I can’t put any weight on it, doctor told me I would be able to put weight by 2nd week but I don’t have any strength to do that.

    I had a meniscus root repair August last year. 6 weeks no weight bearing then 2 weeks partial weight bearing, then started physical therapy, went back to work part time in November(I work on my feet). Now 9 months later started working full time and trying to go back to weight lifting and doing 30 min on my stationary bike, im in pain almost everyday and the knee swollen. Definitely frustrating not being able to go back to my activities after all this time 😞

    Six months post-op meniscus repair with extrusion, you are correct about time. I am a Registered nurse and 12 hour shifts are very long and hard on the recovery. I am still in PT once a week, I noticed swelling and stiffness this week as I started with lateral lunges and harder movements. I have not had any swelling in the past 6 months but according to your video and PT say this is normal and i must be patient. Thank you for all the great advice and exercise routines. Question for you, what are your thoughts on PRP treatment?

    I tore my lateral meniscus and had surgery for a repair 6 weeks ago. Week 1-4 was really difficult and couldn’t see how I could get back to walking any time soon. After upping my physio and going on the exercise bike everyday for 2 weeks I’m back walking (not perfectly). There’s a lot of doom comments and it can be scary and overwhelming. However everything takes time and you will get better just hang in there and take it day by day :)

    Week 3 after meniscus root repair. I was given a brace which I take on & off. During a moment where it felt stable I put weight on it and soon left a big pull and pain in the front. I got stuck then I noticed a small bruice right below the knee where it was hurting. I'm so glad you're more realistic about the true healing time it takes. It is so depressing when ppl even the receptionist puts in her 2 cents to drop the crutches and walk on week 2, so I pushed myself. I'm worried is the small bruising normal? 2nd meniscus surgery in less than 2 years btw.

    Thank you for this honest video! Just had an knee meniscus repair 2 weeks ago and am doing PT and I’m someone that thinks mind over matter and am already picturing myself back in the gym but I don’t want to re injure myself again. My PT is working on my ROM and he thinks that my stiffness or limited ROM is me guarding myself. So I’ve been pushing myself to bend my knee but you’re video has made me realize to give myself grace and let my body heal! Thanks again and God bless for this informative free content!

    thank you! i had meniscus {cut } surgery and arthritic bone spurs shaved and addressed 4 weeks ago and have been doing PT 3 times a week for the last three weeks and i am having a "set back" with pain and major swelling the doctor stopped PT for two weeks with rest and ice and stretching at home to calm the swelling again and possible gel injections now and i am really bummed about the set back but i know it's my body telling me to slow down, PT is rough! the did get my knee more mobile but its too stressful for my knee right now and i feel everyone heals differently. moving foward i am listening to my body !

  • @danglassphoto
    @danglassphoto ปีที่แล้ว

    Good and timely information for me. Here is my question: When you say "listen to your body", does that mean if your knees ache to just stop what you are doing? Or gently keep working through it? I am an active 60 year old long time soccer referee and tore the medial meniscus in both knees (during the same game). I am post op on two medial meniscectomyies; the left since March 2022 and right in early Dec 2022. My knees ache after PT and often make me sad. My newly repaired knee hurts less than the former. I have now lowered my recovery expectations based on this video. But each time I try to rehab (light stationary cycling followed by stretching) my knees will ache for the next three days. How much do I scale back? I can bring both heels to glute with just a bit of pain so flexibility is good. I fear my refereeing days could be over :( Thanks for your very well laid out information.

    I am 43 yrs old. Had a full thickness meniscus tear. Severe Chondromalacia on weighbearing surfaces in the medial compartment. Moderate chindromalacia patella. He also said I don’t have much cartilage. The MRI also said “cannot exclude tear of MCL”. I go to Physical therapy. But, I don’t know what exercises to do with everything that’s wrong. I can’t bear weight on my leg without SEVERE pain. I had acupuncture today. I am miserable. Had arthroscopy with meniscectomy 6 weeks ago. Now I’m worse. 😞

    @cdrtej 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    After I hyperextended it and tore the medial meniscus the original PT-only treatment was 80% in a few months, about 18 months to 98% recovery. 30 years of pain-free click eventually became degenerative tear and PT did nothing. My surgeons do not sound like what you say. My new PT sounds exactly like my 1980s PT, like a time warp. Glutes and therabands.

    I had a partial meniscectomy, the surgeon couldn't repair the meniscus so he just cut and cleaned the area. He also fished some loose bodies. He said that I could be back to normal as soon as the swelling was gone... It's been three weeks and I can walk decently but not much bending. I will listen to my knee because I don't think I'll be fully recovered in three months. Thanks for this video.

    Hi doc...thanks for the video...I have recently been told by the surgeon that my medial meniscus is torn but has not told my what kind of tear or the grade of it..all I can say is the pain when I walk is in the middle of the joint on my inner thigh and sometime when I walk I will gradually feel mild pops. So I will stop for a bit and can bend my knee with mild pain and then start walking again and there will be no popping...but as time goes on the pop will start again and then I have to do the stop, sit, and bend again...is there a way you can at least explain what kind of tear I'm experiencing...what ever my knee is now doing is from a real strong pop I had 3 weeks ago and had to go to the ER because my knee had swollen and I was giving antiflamitory meds which made the swelling go down and then I was able to bend my knee again but is still a lil sore in the middle of the joint with the popping sensation...if you could please give a moment of your time and explain what I'm experiencing now before the surgery, I would very much appreciate it

    I had a partial Menisectomy for both my meniscus, mpfl reconstruction, anterior plica removal on oct 21, 2022. Nearly 1.5 years ago i fell down in my house.I had two MRI done before my surgery . In my mri there was grade 3 medial meniscus tear , subluxation of patella, and pvns . And doctor immediately told me that you are having PVNS , you should go for surgery. Before the sugical option, i tries non conventional method i.e through exercise , rest, ice but the pain did' nt go awat.But during the surgery, they told me that my plica was rubbing against the bone, thats why I am having pain in the outer side of the knee and also I had lots of inflammation in the knee. Its been 3.5 month after surgery, the pain is still there on the same place. And while pressing that area where I had initial pain, the pain feels intense,I informes my doctor he suggested few tests for rheumatoid arthritis, uric acid but all were negative.
    I.5 month i had a physiotherapist and thereafter till now i am doing exercise by my own.
    Should I wait for more time for recovery?

I get a ton of stiffness / inflammation after running and even after doing knee exercises (combination of knees over toes guy / other PT suggested excercises). My new doctor suggests it could be scar tissue or neuroma and I'm getting my 3rd MRI in the past year as the previous two MRIs didn't show any problems despite me having pain. Hope this helps. Did PT for 3 months and didn't get any relief. Have the gel shots scheduled for next week . Are there any docs in America that do any sort of smoothing of the surface or debridement surgery for all the clicking and popping. I would never in a million years of had this surgery if i knew this was even a possibility. Very sad here in jersey .

    Hi, I'm on my 4th week post op on my left knee with a BTB patellar replacement for my ACL and repaired bucket handle tear on medial meniscus. Was told not to rush on my PT as it takes a longer time to heal and no weight barring for 6 weeks. But I more worried to get my knee extension and flex to start off. Now I'm at 0° extension and 110° for flex on the 4th week. And also worried if my medial meniscus able to be repaired and recovering well if it's on the blood supply side or not, as lots of patients do tend to have issues when recovering and to undergo for trimming. So how long should I really wait for it to be fully recovered? I'm looking at a year I guess?

    Dear Sir
    Thank you for the video.
    Please clarify whether you were referring to a partial meniscectomy or meniscus repair as these two procedures differ from each other.
    I believe this should have been mentioned in the video as "meniscus surgery" is vague and each procedure has its own healing time and protocols etc
    Thank you and regards
