Jumping in because reading youtube comments, post op, had me so down, and in total buyers remorse. I tore my lateral meniscus 10/22 - had surgery 9/23. In the time in-between, i figured the pain was from stress induced weight gain and being out of shape, on an old acl repair, so i began to workout 5 days a week. Lost 40 lbs in 11 months, strengthened my everything to better support my knee, and none of that ultimately helped. I finally went for the MRI, then surgery.
I am now just past 4 months post op and i feel fantastic. The first couple months were pretty rough, especially when reading all the comments of people being up and walking within a week......But here i am now, 18 weeks out and i am back to most physical exercising - hour long walks took me almost 3 months - going down hill can be rough, but up is amazing. I can skip, jog, do the running man, and zero pain. I do low impact workouts, pilates machine, weight training, fast long walks, 100+ squats a day and so on. I do have a new click i hear sometime , and at a certain degree, a click that i feel. I avoid pushing into that second click that i feel to avoid any arthritic type rubbing.
Looking back, zero buyers remorse for now. I feel almost back to, pre meniscus tear, normal. I cannot get fully into child's pose as i think my muscles are still tight from over a year of the torn meniscus limiting me.
I should also mention, my injury was not really painful. I lost range of motion past 90degrees and had major swelling. and stability loss. But no pain. My knee never locked up, and it only buckled a couple times from sloppy movements.
I hope this helps lifts someones spirits.

I think you are @celladorz. Wish I could contact outside this. I hurt my knee running...Dr's goofed around with pt, drugs, just burning time so I could mri. Finally got an mri, it's a root tear meniscus, tear off the bone. My surgeon wants to get going, but I've got to go to Europe for several months, no time to rehab first (maybe 6 weeks...I have a wife and a 4 year-old--can't leave her with bags, stroller...and blood clot concer flying?). I'm 62, I do sprint triathlons, 10k...not now. I've been on the elliptical anyway, working thru pain, but I watch this and I'm sooooo depressed. I'm worried I won't make it thru Europe until fall surgery, and even then, this video says 6 to 12 months....lordy, no workout for that period? Some days no pain, others like today excruciating...anyway, there should be a group 4 this...by the way, add I'm an alcoholic 10 years clean, no smoking either....😂😅😂 Just trying to wrap my mind around this...

I am a physically active person and I started having pain in my left knee. Though it was not stopping me from daily routine, I was unable to run or sit down and stretch my knee beyond 90 degrees. I tried recovery for sometime but it was a mental block as I could not run and play badminton and other favourite stuff. Finally I got my MRI done and it was grade 2 tear for medial meniscus. I just had surgery 3 weeks ago. Currently on limited mobility and doing the therapy recommended by Physio. I am happy to see your post that you are back to normal after 18 weeks. I don’t have much pain now but I am ready to invest some more time on strengthening knee and hoping to get back to my best in next 6 months.

I'm about 8 months after my surgery, and I'd say I'm about 80% healed. I was told it would be 3-6 weeks... I can now many times walk without a limp and I recently started to do squats with minimal weight. I also somewhat recently started climbing stairs without needing to place both feet on each step. It's been very slow but my biggest regret is not doing physical therapy soon after surgery. For some reason my surgeon told me I didn't need to if I could be active on my own.
I ended up doing PT around months 3-4. Quad / leg atrophy I believe was the biggest problem for this long recovery. I was on crutches a month and a half before surgery and apparently my surgeon didn't notice my leg was already windling away. Post surgery my surgeon was also not very responsive when I would ask what type of pain I should be ok feeling. He would just say "you're fine" when I finally got to talk with him for 30 seconds. It was a very unsure period of time for myself as I had a dead quad and thought I was supposed to be running already 😂 PT helped get me back on track.
My advice is go to PT. Don't let your muscles die on you. Without your legs muscles, your knee is under great strain! Not good for recovery.

FANTASTIC information had Minsicus root repair, crutches for 6 weeks, started walking a week ago, lots of swelling and a bit of pain and sever loss of muscle from it being immobile, recovery lot longer than I expected and have been surprised how much my foot is now swelling now I no longer have it elevated.

I built up my legs a month before arthroscopic surgery to clean up lateral and medial torn meniscus. I am two weeks post op today with full range of motion and very little pain. Iced after any exercise I did and then before bed. My knee is so much better after getting the torn material out of the knee. I am a 67 year old male with no arthritis in the knee.

Good to hear. I just had the same today. The important distinction is a clean up surgery is different from a repair (sewing it back together). How much of your meniscus did you get removed? They told me today they took out 55%. Yikes!

I am so glad that I came across your video! Everything you are saying is what happened to me. I had a great Orthopedic surgeon last year in June. And I was able to walk within a week with no pain. I did the follow ups with him and all was well. I'm an Event Coordinator and I was even able to go to 2 conventions at the end of August. That was the big test and I had no problems. But nothing was ever mentioned that it would take 6-12 months to completely heal and recover. It's been 9 months since the surgery and a couple of days ago I went to a museum which lasted all day. Well now it's 3 days later, and I got up from the couch and I am limping. I walked a bit to stretch my knee out and the pain went away, and I'm walking fine. But it is a red flag that I need to do something about it. And pay closer attention to my knee and not overdo things. I thought I was being careful, but I was wrong. To the people out there reading this, I hope your surgery goes well and like he said, listen to your knee. Good luck to you all! : )

@@johnmurphy6556 ice it a ton! also, keep moving! i personally, would take walks every couple hours, starting from day 2 post op. Do the pt exercises like leg lifts and muscle tightening..... after a couple weeks, walking backwards in a safe area, with a guide, is huge! Go to PT! massage the leg from calf up to thigh to keep fluids moving. Elevate whenever you care. And TIME! sprinkled with patience

I had a minor medial tear of my meniscus in my left knee. Also, MRI showed a lot of arthritis. The worst was the small amount of space I had developed between the tibia and the femur bone on the inside of the knee. I had surgery 2 months ago, which he removed the minor tear, but the arthritic inside of the knee pain is the worst. He said he scraped as much arthritis from that part of the knee joint as he could. He's a reputable surgeon in the practice, but not very informative at all. After surgery I found your channel and have worked the heck out of my glutes and quads. After 7 weeks I still had a lot of pain. My family doctor told me anytime the bone is scraped it can take up to 3 months for inflammation to go down. As of the past 2 weeks I have been taking Physical therapy 2 times a week along with the exercises at home. I am glad I revisited your channel tonight as I was getting pretty discouraged because of the pain. Though I am 66, I have always been active, eat as healthy as I can and am not overweight. I have full range of motion, have never needed assistance from day one. Just dealing with the pain is the issue. I take 2 Ibuprofin and 1 tylenol per day. Thank you so very much for your insite, as it has helped me with my expectations.

I am 10 weeks out from meniscus surgery and I had relatively low pain and very good mobility during the first month afterwards. But as time went on, I became more sore, stiffer, and at times was in great pain. Speaking to my surgeon, he thought I should continue my physical therapy for another month before thinking about a cortisone shot in the knee. Listening this to video, I learned to lower my expectations of quick recovery and what I need to do going forward. So, thank you for readjusting my expectations and setting out a road map for a pain free recovery.

Just like with surgeries - every knee's requirements for healing is potentially different... my PT was fine with me doing another 2 weeks of PT, but we made the decision together to discharge since I've hit all the classic numbers and my day to day movement (walking, stairs, et cetera) I'm pain-free - age, previous strength (prior to my surgery I did everything I could to bulk up my quads/hamstrings/gastroc) all factor into the amount of rehab and time is needed to fully heal.
At this point, I'm confident I'll be back to good in another 2-3 months - but again, really trying to not rush it.
Hope you start feeling better soon Emmett!

By meniscus surgery, to be more specific you mean meniscus repair.
This is the same info my surgeon told me; that a meniscus repair, which he did not advise for me, takes at least 6 months to recover from. The meniscus does not get good blood supply and heals very slowly.

Hey 22130tulips, yes any meniscus surgery - repair or removal.
It does heal slow, but even slower than surgeons realize - expect 9-12 months to feel solid in your knee again. And that's assuming you do everything right without any complications during the recovery.

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy I'm almost up to four month since my meniscectomy and I can bend my knee about 125°. But it's a little bit of pain in my knee getting to this range. Also some tightness. My good knee bends to about 150° (as probably is the average range of the human knee anatomy).
Feeling what I'm feeling and knowing the point that I'm at. Yeah, I'd say nine to twelve months sounds about right.

I am so sad this is exactly what happened to me. Had my surgery and was doing great. My surgeon was shocked how well I recovered. Went to Disney two months after surgery and was fine. When I got back from Disney I saw my surgeon he told me to start doing things such as walking the dogs, working in the yard etc. He said then I will know what I can and can't do. The surgeon said I can't harm the knee. Well he was wrong. I wish I would have listened to myself and saw your video and was careful because now I am in worst shape then before surgery. Now he is saying I need a knee replacement. I am in pain and limping! I wasn't even limping before the torn meniscus surgery just in pain, but nothing like I am now. I feel like he wanted me to mess it up so then they can make more money off me. What can I do at this point to get back to where I was I am trying not to do the replacement? I have had a steroid shot which didn't work and now getting gel injections. Have one more to go. I have a trip planned to Texas and Utah and still plan on going but need to do something.

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Oh no Latasha! It's okay! You just need to let go of the timeframes the doctor told you. Your knee can still heal...it just takes as long as it takes. You have to be very patient and don't over-do it with your meniscus...even if the surgeon told you it is okay to proceed. We've seen soooo many people go walking for exercise, even run at the surgeon's recommendation and they're just not ready yet. Then they get irritated and swollen in their knee. People are all unique and heal at different rates. You should feel no worse pain in your knee from anything you do. If you do feel pain, it's okay and you didn't over-do it if the pain subsides within 24 hrs.

    • @8sun52
      @8sun52 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hmmm. Meniscus repair? My understanding from what I've read, the meniscus does not get much blood flow and a meniscus repair takes upwards of 6 months or more to heal appropriately. A meniscectomy supposedly takes much less but that's not what I'm experiencing.

My surgeon also recommended me PRP therapy so I am doing 3 shots (15mL), in germany cost 130eur/shot.

I had meniscus surgery (meniscstectomy) on left knee two years ago after aserious slip/fall on stairs. I am 62, very athletic (HIIT classes four or five days a week; one or two 30 mile bike rides most weekends; walk the dog two miles every day). Recovery was steady but slow and quite a bit of discomfort if not outright pain; it was one full year till I was pain free and fully mobile, and another six months to be all the way back, with quads back at equal strength. Wouldn't you know it, six months later, tore my right meniscus! Discouraging, but at least I know full healing is at least a year-long process. My advice: have the surgery (it works) prepare your head for a long road back, do your PT, push against the discomfort (but not into pain zone) and plan to do a lot of strengthening on the affected leg to get back to sports and fitness classes.

This is the 12th week and after some excercise it swelled up significantly to the point where walking for 10 minutes would hurt. • @8sun52
      @8sun52 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I hope this info can help you or anyone else to put their meniscus situation into a little bit better perspective: I had a medial bucket handle meniscectomy the beginning of March '22. If I remember correctly now, around 3 months after the surgery I was able to get it at about 110° with some pulling it back with some pain.
I also had substantial swelling at this point.
At some point he removed some of the fluid with a needle.
My surgeon said (from the MRI) I needed about 40% of the meniscus removed.
Post surgery my surgeon did not mention anything about more meniscus being removed. Also he showed me the photographs and said I had absolutely no cartilage wear and I had been walking on this medial bucket handle meniscus tear for 5 months before the surgery! I'm just very, very lucky.
I'm not overweight at all. That probably helps a lot. If anything I'm underweight.
I was going to PT twice a week.
My surgeon said my progress was a bit too slow and I might need "manipulation" , however, on the next visit I got it to about 140°.
He was encouraged but he wanted me to get it back all the way to heal against rear end or close to it.
It's been a few weeks past 6 months and my progress is in an inch or two every three weeks or so, but it seems I'm kind of hitting a brick wall here.
I've been searching online and I found a website that recommends warm compresses for 20 minutes and then massaging the scar area for 10 minutes or so to loosen the scar up. That's what's inhibiting the range of motion (ROM), the scar tissue.
The warm compresses brings blood to that area which helps the recovery process.
At this point I only have very slight swelling.
Knowing what I know now with all the information, everybody will have a different recovery time that's influenced by the type of meniscus tear and various other contributors.
My next visit with my surgeon is in October.

@@InfectedoOG I'm glad it helped a bit. Yeah, there's some helpful info going around here and that's a good thing.
One thing. My job is physical so a month before I went back to work, I spent about 2 days looking for knee sleeves to support my bad knee and possibly avoid my other knee from a possible meniscus tear. And, I tell you... I burnt myself out for two days looking all over but I wasn't going to give up.
The thing about all these websites for products is what's number one or two on one website is down near four or five on another website. You don't know who or what to believe.
I finally ran across this company Wonder-steps. Their knee sleeves are designed by some of the best orthopedic surgeons in the country. I try not to get blitzed by all these advertising slogans but they ARE really excellent. Their customer service IS excellent. These knee sleeves are REALLY very well made and very supportive. Just what I need.
They have a lot of verified testimonials. I ordered another pair after looking over the quality and workmanship of the first pair I ordered.
My surgery knee feels very supportive and stabilized as I walk up and down steps and walk along the walkway on my job.
They still offer their summer 45% off and free shipping. They're made in the United States.

I’ve been told by 2 doctors because it took so long for workers comp to approve the surgery arthritis happened. I was told some arthritis was cleaned up during surgery. 2022 went back to surgeon, X-ray showed arthritis, reason I went in because it has never gotten better, worse than before surgery, was hurting and limiting quality of life. Fast forward to 2023. Pain is radiating down to ankle/foot from knee, very painful, quality of reduced , debilitating. Over the counter medicine doesn’t takeaway pain, cant go up/ down stairs, hurts after 2-3 hours of standing/ walking, hurts to get up from sitting, hurts when going to sleep at night, trying to find a comfortable position. Feels best in the morning until I get moving. I have been approved by workers comp to get back into surgeon this week to see What is going on. Nervous and scared

@@q23252The beginning of March. I'm almost up to four months since my bucket handle medial meniscectomy and I can bend my knee about 125°. But it's a little bit of pain in my knee getting to this range. Also some tightness. My good knee bends to about 150° (as probably is the average range of the human knee anatomy).
Feeling what I'm feeling and knowing the point that I'm at, El Paso Physical Therapist's typical recovery time of about 9 to 12 months seems more realistic in my case, (and other cases too).
My surgeon is telling me I'm progressing too slowly but that's what a lot of surgeons are saying from what I've been reading all over YT. These surgeon's recovery time prognosis seems a bit optimistic.
Partly because of insurance reasons, I was walking around for about five months with this meniscus tear, before my March surgery.
My surgeon showed me photos of my knee when I returned to get my stitches removed. He showed me how smooth my cartilage was. Absolutely no damage at all. He removed about 40% of the meniscus. Maybe it's just the lose meniscus (for five months) hanging up between the cartilage which avoided cartilage-on-cartilage rubbing, and most of the meniscus still remaining, that there wasn't much rubbing of cartilage on cartilage yet. Maybe over a number of years that could happen...who knows...But for now I'm very, very lucky.
Still going to PT and doing PT at home.
      Just gotta keep on trucking...

@@q23252 One more thing I should have mentioned. About eight weeks ago my surgeon encouraged me to move off the cane. But I compromised. I use a cane to go to PT because I'm going through very busy crowded areas. I don't use a cane in very brief walks to a very nearby store through an uncrowded area.
So I can get around now in a basically stable way without a cane. But I don't take the chance in crowded areas.

After upping my physio and going on the exercise bike everyday for 2 weeks I’m back walking (not perfectly). There’s a lot of doom comments and it can be scary and overwhelming. Hi, i am 62, i had my right knee medial meniscus tear in February 2024. 3 weeks ago had meniscus tear repair surgery. My surgeon told me to keep the leg in the brace still for 3 weeks. Use walker n brace only to washroom. Now after 3 weeks yesterday started physiotherapy, exercises to strengthen knee muscles and knee movements. It is very painful. As per my surgeon recovery period is 3 to 4 weeks, PT 4 weeks and painless walking after 3 months and to be back to normal it will take 6 months. I think my surgeon is right.

    THANK YOU.
THESE QUESTIONS GO OUT TO ANYONE WHO CAN ANSWER THESE AND I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A SPEEDY AND GOOD RECOVERY.
10 weeks after your meniscectomy were you able to bend your leg all the way back as far as your good leg bends back? Or are you only able to bend it about 90°? And on bending it about 90° did you feel pressure in the knee? I can bend it about 20° past 90°, but that's putting some force into it like with PT exercises. Did you still have some swelling of the knee? Were you easily able to walk up and down steps or did you still have a limited range that made it difficult?
I am in my mid 60s and had a partial medial bucket handle meniscectomy. My surgeon showed me the pics. There's no wear or damage to my cartilage. He showed how smooth and undamaged it is. And I was walking around with the bucket handle meniscus tear for 5 months until the surgery! And my job is a physical one. I'm just very lucky.
This is my situation. I'm trying to get an idea of all of this through searching online different resources.
    I'm going through PT now.

22130tulips, this is Dr. David - as an expert PT who has helped many, many people with meniscus injuries (both without surgery and right after surgery like you), 10 weeks after your menisectomy you should have 90% or better of what your motion was before your meniscus injury...unless you had a loss of motion for a long time.
If you lost knee motion for more than 3 months, then it's possible that you might not get it back even after surgery.
If you had full motion before surgery, then you should expect to get it back within the first 4-8 weeks.
Problems that could be occurring are:
      1) You're currently doing too much and need to rest - which is the point that this video is stressing
      2) there's been a surgical problem
      3) you need manual therapy that you're currently not getting. Possibly for a tibial shift or some other area of your knee joint that has become restricted.
Number 1 is the most common reason I see.
I wish you the best of luck in getting your full motion and mobility back again so you can return to your physical job 100% and better able to endure it without problems!

I had my meniscus surgery for my lateral meniscus where it had flipped, got, pinched and torn, and they trimmed off the damaged part and I’m still not right. I have limited range of motion and a limp. My surgeon said no knee brace was needed. Basically I was gonna walk out of there and be OK. No physical therapy but I have noticed quite a bit of issues. I have pain every day. I have swelling above my knee in a horseshoe shape around my knee. and the other day I went back to see him my surgeon and he told me that I’m gonna need a young age knee replacement and quit eating. I understand I’m overweight and that does affect the joint but the way he went about it was pretty brutal. I just want my need to stop hurting and keep being mobile and I’m looking for ways to help without the injections.

I had a partial Menisectomy for both my meniscus, mpfl reconstruction, anterior plica removal on oct 21, 2022. Nearly 1.5 years ago i fell down in my house.I had two MRI done before my surgery . In my mri there was grade 3 medial meniscus tear , subluxation of patella, and pvns . And doctor immediately told me that you are having PVNS , you should go for surgery. Before the sugical option, i tries non conventional method i.e through exercise , rest, ice but the pain did' nt go awat. But during the surgery, they told me that my plica was rubbing against the bone, thats why I am having pain in the outer side of the knee and also I had lots of inflammation in the knee. Its been 3.5 month after surgery, the pain is still there on the same place. And while pressing that area where I had initial pain, the pain feels intense,I informes my doctor he suggested few tests for rheumatoid arthritis, uric acid but all were negative.
I.5 month i had a physiotherapist and thereafter till now i am doing exercise by my own.
Should I wait for more time for recovery?

They’ve drained it and told me to ice more often and add compression. If I had known this would make my knee worse I would’ve kept pushing through with physical therapy therapy. I was doing PT 3 months prior to surgery and it was a very slow progress, but that slow progress was def better than this. This is too painful and too swollen to do anything 😢 before I was able to walk for an hour before feeling immense pain, now I can’t even walk for 3 minutes. I wish I could go back 😢💔 why can’t surgeons be more honest. Why can’t the discharge instructions be more honest

As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not.

I' m 12 days post-surgery. In our country (Slovakia), the patient stands up and walk almost immediately, just a few hours after the procedure. In the first days, it's important to cool the knee to reduce swelling and to slowly start exercising and strengthening the quadriceps. 6 to 12 months seems too long for recovery. After my first surgery on my left knee, I had full knee function within three months. It's all about discipline.

You probably didn’t have a true repair done - having the piece cut off is quicker, but they often call it a “repair” even though it is not the meniscus being sewn back together.

Fast forward to a few months ago. Our big dog rammed my inner knee & i felt an immediate pain ont the inner portion of the same knee. MRI showed a lateral& bilateral tear. Got it shaved not stitched inside. I woke w/ the worst post op pain & I've had 13 surgeries ranging from abdominal, inguinal hernia repair repeated 4x& the ACL. None hurt like this 1.
I'm 3 weeks out. Have been waling w/o assistance (except my structured knee brace left from the ACL). I use the brace if I'm standing or having to walk out of my house. My surgeon says I'm doing well w/ ROM. I can straighten, lift & bend while laying flat; however my knee is still very swollen & tender to the inner knee, outer knee & my entire muscle group on all sides & the top of my knee w/ the pain feeling like fire fingers being pressed into my muscles & raked up to my hip. Any ideas?
My PT starts on Dec 27th. I've been doing the light stretching & excersing a bit by walking around the house & I've walked the mall w/ my daughter 2x since the 1st week was over. I was told to get up & move. U r right, my body is telling something different than the ACL. That was a breeze compared to this. I'm icing, elevating the foot to keep my leg straight, taking my meds but would appreciate any advice, ideas or words of wisdom. Bless you & Thank you. 💕🙏🏻

I had my surgery a month ago - had it on the 13th of Jan. In and out of hospital same day and my surgeon advised to go on as normal and no need for physio. Had an ACL 27 years ago and from my MRI and once he went in, there is more than what met the eye, but ultimately had a tear in my lateral body of the meniscus. I have swelling and pain worse then before. Was on crutches for a week and 2nd week walked without them. Only started physical therapy 2 weeks back but only 2 sessions. I just had surgery a week ago and it's healing by the stitches well and, with icing, the swelling's gone down. I honestly feel more pain from the bruising from whatever clamps they used to hold my leg and thigh in place. I'm careful when I walk to not move my knee beyond what it's about to bare. I'm careful with everything paying close attention to what my leg and knee's telling me and showing me. I've got online physical therapy since my car went out so no machine for this, although I'm sure that stimulating machine would help like it did pre-surgery. I'm glad I saw this so I'll have more realistic expectations and not hurt myself, noting and reporting closely any issues for myself and the doctor. I see the doctor Monday so I'm thinking it will be to see if the stitches can come out. I think they'll be ready to go then. They look ready now. Thank you again and God bless you ⚘️

Thank you for this video. I just had surgery one week ago for a meniscus tear and I think I didn’t have realistic expectations for how I’d be after surgery.

Had menisectomy on August 16th 2024, on week 4 after the surgery my knee stiff and can't bend beyond 90 degree. the doctor said this is another problem (knee stiffness) due to the plica tissue that is getting thicker, since i trained myself too hard in the first 2 week then stopped in week 3 due too severe pain. then he had to forcibly bend it to 120 degrees, which was very painful and made me cry out, but said had to that so that i dont need to redo the surgery. now im entering the week 6 and it's finally can fully bended, but im still using the cructhes and can't bear weight that much. the main focus now is to bear at least 60% from my weight. the pain is still here but i think it's getting better now on my case

Thanks for this!! I am 66 and have a very physical job. I needed the reminder to "slow down and listen to my body."

Hi Amymusick, You are welcome! Yes, slow down, especially after having surgery. It would also be helpful if you could speak to your employer to see if they can make accommodations for you as you are recovering. Just in case you're interested, we have a knee meniscus surgery help playlist that you might also find helpful. You can access it here:
      “Knee Meniscus Surgery Help”
      th-cam.com/play/PLJVIPiFvv1maIj5ge4oSQTqVs3RzwpqwV.html
Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not.
We hope you have a speedy recovery.🙌 We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!

I’m so glad I read through the comments I had my surgery 6/4/2024 and the surgeon did have to a microfracture down to the bleeding bone and I do realize it takes a little longer to heal and I need to be more patient but it is frustrating. Also the doctor did let me know because of advanced arthritis the surgery might not work but you always hope it will work. But will not consider knee replacement because of the awful pain from this surgery.

Thank you for this, it's a relief to know the 3 months aren't a magical number! I discovered I had torn menisci in BOTH knees, but my RT one had a detached root & got surgery. (How I got that way sitting at the piano/computer working hours on music puzzles me. I was also told the 3 month rule, but somedays I get stiffness & swelling. Going down & up stairs is awkward, so I drive to a place with hand rails & non steep steps to practice a little. Going to check out your 5 glute exercises now!

4 days post op after a meniscus surgery, starting to walk but a bit stiff, thanks for the reminder and I will check the gluteus exercises, I’m a patient right now and I know to go back to work the 12 hours shift will be challenging.

Hi. I think you need to clarify expectations for partial meniscectomy vs an actual repair. I suspect this video is largely talking about a repair (though it doesn't specify, it should imho), where actual healing of the meniscus itself is required vs simply having a piece trimmed out. I'm 44 and have just had partial meniscectomy to remove a torn piece. I'm now at day 6 and can walk, cycle and go up and down stairs. Not currently taking any painkillers (I took paracetamol the first 3 days or so). Even went to the gym last night and tried a few walking lunges, and moderate weight on the leg extension machine. Contrast someone I know from badminton who recently had an actual repair and said the recovery has been brutal, and he's only recently stepped back on court after around 9 months. Definitely take with a pinch of salt.

After reading these comments and awaiting surgery for a very painful Meniscus tear I'm scared I will be worse off after the operation. I don't suppose there is any chance it will get better on its own. I am 65yrs old and only work a few hrs a day but it involves a fair bit of walking. 😢

Thankful I found this video I’m almost 8 weeks out from surgery back to work for 2 weeks now & in more pain than I was before the surgery! My knee locks at night in bed if it’s bent, walking hurts & getting into our sanctuary at church is the worst because there’s a ramp that I almost has to jog down because it’s so steep. Then I’m in pain the entire service.😭😒 this video gives me hope because as you stated my surgeon.. haven’t seen him since! Just the NP & PT was just suggested 6 weeks out.

I’m 3 days out from surgery and glad I saw this! They said I’d be able to walk out of surgery, and I could…because of the painkillers and nerve block-was old that I wouldn’t need PT because I’m active-thx for the insight!

Thank you for this video! Can you comment on feeling pain in the opposite leg, please? I had arthroscopic surgery for a meniscus tear 4 weeks ago and have been having pain in my opposite knee/leg. I noticed this pain well before my surgery and it is ongoing.

After I hyperextended it and tore the medial meniscus the original PT-only treatment was 80% in a few months, about 18 months to 98% recovery. 30 years of pain-free click eventually became degenerative tear and PT did nothing. My surgeons do not sound like what you say. My new PT sounds exactly like my 1980s PT, like a time warp. Glutes and therabands.

Good and timely information for me. Here is my question: When you say "listen to your body", does that mean if your knees ache to just stop what you are doing? Or gently keep working through it? I am an active 60 year old long time soccer referee and tore the medial meniscus in both knees (during the same game). I am post op on two medial meniscectomyies; the left since March 2022 and right in early Dec 2022. My knees ache after PT and often make me sad. My newly repaired knee hurts less than the former. I have now lowered my recovery expectations based on this video. But each time I try to rehab (light stationary cycling followed by stretching) my knees will ache for the next three days. How much do I scale back? I can bring both heels to glute with just a bit of pain so flexibility is good. I fear my refereeing days could be over :( Thanks for your very well laid out information.

I am 6 weeks post op for a Medial Root Tear Repair and Debridgement. The recovery is absolutely awful. I did a lot of research before the surgery and thought I was prepared for the recovery but I was not prepared for life to essentially stop. I wish I would have waited for a full knee replacement rather than dealing with this. My ROM is terrible, lots of swelling, constant elevation, just beginning to walk, pain is still there and worse than before surgery. Do not get this surgery!!!! PT helps a little but I feel like my knee will never be normal again! 😢

Update: I am now 4 months post op and am doing much better and knee is doing great. However, I still would NOT recommend this surgery!!!
