I’m going through the worst time of my life right now. I’m a postman who can’t walk! I’ve never been laid up for more than 2 weeks but now? Having to take STD for months and doing nothing but sleep+rehab has me questioning my whole life like nothing ever could. The reassurance I’ve taken from this video is leagues beyond anything I could articulate here. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this!❤ I’m 2 sessions into what looks like 180 sessions till a hopefully full recovery. 3 months and counting. Wish me luck! Good luck to y’all out there suffering the same knee pain. I can empathize 😂

      Hello
Please let me what you think, i’m terrified of surgery. I’m 60 years old MRI shows arthritis, in my lateral knee, and 😢bucket handle meniscus that’s needs surgery I’ve had too many episodes where I go three weeks without any praying and then I can get up from having dinner and then I feel a pulled muscle where I cannot move my leg, I eventually get it straightened, but it’s very painful to walk. What are steps to recovery after surgery? And I was told I was still having pain.

try microcurrent fsm first since they use that in the VA for all the joint pain,.. What will also work is stem cell but that will cost $5K -oviously stem cell can become any tissue.

I injured myself 4 weeks ago and basically did some research on this. I basically followed exactly what she has said. Big difference in my leg! The thing that sucks is the full recovery time but hoping the end result is very good and I can continue my cycling/gym life style at its fullest. Key word is patience .

I got severe left knee pain 2 weeks ago, caused probably by a minor tear of my lateral meniscus. I saw my doctor 3 days ago who has ordered an MRI scan for me which is scheduled 3 weeks away in August. I came across your video this morning and found it most helpful. My orthopedist was very good but I appreciate he has a heavy clinic load.... Your explanation is so clear and your vedio so informative that I have subscribed immediately. Thank you SO much!

I’m 68 years old. Three years ago while bodyboarding I got hit by big wave on the side of my left knee. I had to crawl out of the surf and could barely move. Unfortunately I didn’t realize at the time that I had done some damage. I was a mountain biker, so after resting for a few weeks I got that on the bike. I bought a boarded a few more times, but it seem to aggravate my knee. I continued to hike and mountain bike. A year and a half ago. My husband had a shoulder injury and we stopped biking. I came off a hiking trail and the next day was in agony. My left knee had ballooned. My entire leg from the ankle to the thigh was black and blue. I went to the orthopedist and was diagnosed with complex meniscus tears, a burst baker cyst, and stage 2-4 osteoarthritis. I did PT for a week, but could hardly move my knee because of the fluid. I had some of it drained and continued sports PT. I had remarkable results with my left knee. Without any warning, my right knee ballooned. I continued PT, but it seem to worsen. An MRI showed complex meniscus tears, including a lateral. Also a lot of fluid and a bakers cyst. My knee would lock up in any movement planting my foot even picking my leg up to the side with send me through the roof! I have not gone back to PT yet because of family issues. I do have a stationary bike which I use and I am doing balance and stabilization exercises. It has gotten better. Thank you so much for a great explanation of not only the anatomy but possible outcomes. I urge anyone that feels that they’ve done some injury to their knees to get it checked ASAP. I believe I created more damage by waiting. Once you have OA there is no correction.

I’ve been scouring the internet since I injured my knee last week and this has been the most helpful video yet. My doctor suspects a meniscus tear, I will get an MRI soon. I am really hoping it’s not a meniscus tear, but I’m grateful for this video answering so many of my questions if it is. I wish recovery was quicker, I already miss running. 😢But I guess there’s hope that limping around and not being able to fully bend or straighten my knee won’t last forever.

Bucket handle injury is no joke. My knee got stuck suddenly while doing something very simple. It was impossible to straighten my knee without surgery. I am happy that it was repaired, but I am afraid to go back to martial arts. I don't know what caused it, but I bet it was my years of jiu jitsu (a lot of crazy movements).

It’s the worst when you don’t know exactly what caused the tear. I tore my hip labrum by unknown means and now I’m too afraid to go back to riding horses because the injury derailed my life for ten years (nobody diagnosed it and thought I was making the pain up because there was no instigating moment of onset).

This is the best information I have found and matches so accurately with my experience. I am in week 9 and while it fluctuates from day to day I feel I am 80% better. The information about movement and the nourishment of the muniscus thru Synovial fluid is very important. I feel like modest movement is better than just sitting and not moving.
"Synovial fluid is a thick fluid with an egg-white-like consistency that lubricates and reduces friction between joints. When synovial fluid is low, which tends to happen with age, it can contribute to joint stiffness and other aging-related joint conditions like osteoarthritis." Thanks you so much!

Great video, thanks! I tripped on a kerb in September last year. My right knee started to click in November. I had 6 physio sessions via my employer but they thought it wasn’t a meniscal tear because I had too much movement in the knee and there was no swelling. An X-ray showed mild OA changes and pseudo gout (I’m 63, male, previous spinal surgeries, on the heavy side and already use a walking stick :) Anyhow was taken to hospital by ambulance 2 weeks ago in quite a lot of pain. MRI showed lateral meniscus tear. I’ve been off sick from work since November (I’m a UK-based mental health nurse). The recent flare-up appears to have subsided and the orthopaedic consultant wants to see me again in June. I’m going to go back to work if my boss agrees and engage with physiotherapy. I just hope the delay in diagnosis won’t hinder my recovery. Thanks again.

I’ve had fluid drained twice in the past two weeks from it and it’s very painful. I initially thought it was gout bout the fluid was tested and it showed no crystals. Thank you so much for the information. I think my meniscus journey started longback. I twisted my knee 12 years ago while training in martial arts. Didn’t pay much attention untill 1 year, I was young so I think it healed a bit but later the pain showed up. With consistent food, selfcare and change in lifestyle I got over it. Now iam in my 40ies. Last year I jumped around 7feet high cliff during a hike and my knee got swollen. It was worse. Based on ultra sound it was diagnosed as minor meniscus tear and minor Ligaments strain could have caused it. I followed the docs instructions. Took bed rest for 2 weeks followed by physio for 2 months. Didn’t find much improvement. I started going for massages and somehow the massages helped my muscles to relax and my leg to get better. After 11 months, I can walk, take medium hikes too with the knee. Only thing is can’t sit for more than 3hrs. My knee reminds me of the injury. Well this is not end of story😢 . My carelessness prompted me to do a hard hike . I went on this steep hike last Saturday and while coming back, for 3kms I made my knee struggle. I hurt my knee badly. Again the same swelling but the popping is intense this time, as if my knee is complaining. I could analyse myself that it’s lateral meniscus that’s hurting. One week bed rest and here I am watching this video carefully and attentively. If I took good care of myself last year and would have been cautious this wouldn’t have happened now. Dear friends, self care and self love is the first medication that we offer to ourselves. I am strongly determined now that I will care for my knee and I will get rid of this soon. ❤

It has been 10 months since I tore my meniscus and sprained ACL. I wear compression and still had to go to work as a teacher. Swelling went down and I start to feel much better...and then I feel awful again. Probably over doing it. Then I begin to heal again...and now I'm on my second "flare up." I got up off a low couch one day and felt injured again shortly after. Probably the twisting motion. This video makes a lot of sense. Once the pain stops, I begin to resume my "normal" activity level...and that irritates it again. This is going to be a long healing journey.I'm wondering why after 10 months, I'm still not all the way back to my regular level of activity. I'm 58. Thank you for making this video.

I really didn't think at first and always had the attitude if it hurts work through it. But after a week went tp physio who said it's LCL and he advised some gentle movement. That was 4 weeks ago and still having pain. I like doing horse stance in Qigong after however my knee is very sore. I'm going to physio 2hrs a week now hoping that I wont have this pain and limping as an ongoing thing. I've Osteoarthritis in both knees but refuse to give up. Hello Doctor, here is my story - about two months ago, I started playing badminton outdoors daily for 1 to 1.5 hours. One day, I felt pain above and below my patella, but the pain went away the next day. However, this pain continued for another 15 days, after which I began feeling pain above both of my patellas when going up and down stairs. I took some rest and started playing again, but whenever I played, I experienced pain in both knee areas, and it lasted for a few days, with more pain on my right knee compared to my left knee. I also didn't use proper shoes and played outdoors.
Recently, I've been feeling like my right leg has become slightly shorter, like 2 or 4mm shorter. Visibly, it's not noticeable, but when I walk normally, I feel like my right side is going down a little compared to my left. Additionally, when I try to stand straight and lock my knees, my left knee is fine, but my right knee feels like I am hitting something right below the patella.
So, I went to a local doctor, who stretched my legs and pressed on my knee cap and told me that it's just knee cap pain. He also gave me Arachiton Nano 60K IU Vitamin D3 (5 ML per day), Rejulox-C (daily 2 for 30 days), and MeAxon plus tab (daily 1 for 30 days) and said that he was giving medicine for cartilage improvement. I've been using these for 15 days, but my pain while going upstairs has only improved slightly. My right knee still feels the same way, a little lowered when walking, and I feel a hitting pain when I straighten my knee to the maximum.
The doctor also suggested that I not use stairs, and to go for quadriceps strengthening exercises and some cycling. Honestly, I haven't gone for physiotherapy yet, but sometimes I do cycling exercises at home, and whenever I do that, I get some pain in both knees that lasts for 1 to 1.5 days.
Based on my history, can you tell me what could be the problem, and do you think there could be a tear in my meniscus? Can I still get back to playing sports (now, I am being very careful in choosing my shoes and only playing indoors)? If so, how long does it usually take to recover? Also, I almost forgot to mention that I am 30 years of age, and I have learned a lot by watching your well-organized videos.
    Thank you.

I got today the recommendation to do surgery for medial meniscus tears, I'm so freaking sad about it. I tried conservative therapy for 6 to 8 months and I improved a lot, but apparently not enough.
Also, I feel a little bit stupid because I'm not sure if I ruined my own recovery by getting too greedy and comfortable, I went from not being able to walk and not being able to do a squat, to biking 60 km and squatting 100 kg (this is the part that worries me, maybe I ego lifted and screwed up my recovery)
Anyways, too late for regretting, hope to be soon doing my sports again and having my life.
Strong hug to everybody going through this injury, we will recover our lifes :)

I tore my lateral meniscus mid February. At first, I couldn't walk up stairs at all, it was way too painful. Two weeks after I tore it I started walking more, stretching and going on an exercise bike eventually. Now three months later, I've been at rugby training twice a week and I've also play in a few games, one been the full game. I also participate in the scrum as I play lock and I haven't really had any issues, my knee just feels a little "off" sometimes but I haven't had much pain at all, mainly discomfort.
I tore my meniscus while running on a treadmill preparing myself for rugby season. When I was on the treadmill, I was feeling unstable but I kept pushing and increasing the speed until I stepped too hard and tore my meniscus. I got a sharp pain, but I could walk quite fine but I couldn't even lift my leg up to put in on the side of the treadmill. This happened after I just after trained legs so my muscles were fatigued.
Learn from my mistakes and rest if you have too, it's much better than having an injury that will probably linger for the rest of your life. I've been too afraid to squat and I'll probably wait a few months until I try.

Great video! Had a traumatic event 3-4 weeks ago. Got hit pretty hard on side of thigh 4-5” above my knee. At first just pretty sore in all of leg (didn’t notice anything particular in knee itself) but hard headed and like always felt like it would heal up in a few days. Played in a golf tournament the following week. 1st day ok just touchy. 2nd day was different story. When shifting weight to my front leg knee couldn’t hold it and would go over and cause pain. Survived. That was three weeks ago and have been trying to do much of the some light work to strengthen it back up and retain flexibility.
Seems like the accident may have caused a lateral meniscus tear. I’m 62 but have stayed in pretty good shape and hoping I can recover without any surgeries.

Hey yall, I’ve had this injury for 12 months now, and have been doing conservative treatment, including injections.
Initially my thoughts were definitely meniscus injury, and many of the physical tests were positive. Only because my images didn’t show anything significant, I was mistreated for itbs.
Now, I have surgery in two weeks for arthroscopy because I met with a specialist surgeon, and he thinks because of no success with conservative treatments, and him noticing some weird things on my images, he thinks the surgical route is the next step.
I will update in two weeks lol

Hello doc! Ive been dealing with this for years. It'll sometimes lock and swell for weeks during wrestling matches. First ortho thought I had "snapping bicep femoris" now after a MRI they think is lateral discoid meniscus. MRI doesn't show torn, but if its not torn why does my leg lock out and leave me needing physical therapy for weeks? And after one lock out its way more likely to lock the first month after injury.

Excellent overview of the meniscus tears!! Thanks as I think you are more informed than my PA who just wanted to blame everything on arthritis as that is the easy out. I’m currently in the progress of strengthening the knee like you stated on my own but taking it as my body is telling me. Golf is extremely hard on the lead knee and the meniscus by the way I found out the hard way if you have limited hip mobility.

Hello doctor, I am 21yo. Based on the MRI reports of my knee, would surgery be necessary for the following findings:
    1) Horizontal tear of body-posterior horn of medial meniscus.
    2) Type 2 signal in anterior and anterior horn of lateral meniscus.
    3) Complete tear of medial patellar retinaculum.
    4) Mild lateral deviation of patella.

    6) Mild knee joint effusion.

    • @SportsInjuryPhysio
      @SportsInjuryPhysio  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Knee supports are a bit hit and miss for this type of thing - some people find them very useful while others don't really benefit. Just be careful of a sleeve - if your knee is very swollen that can cut the circulation off. So it must not be too tight or a better option is often to use something that fastens with velcro so you can adjust the fit more easily - I discuss it in this video: th-cam.com/video/dF3F65ENJfs/w-d-xo.html

There is no set time for progression because every person's injury is different and people also heal at different rates. Progression is according to how your knee tolerates different activities etc. A physiotherapist will be able to guide you through this process.

Hello! I hope you are doing well. I recently got my MRI results, and it mentioned a grade 3 tear at the posterior horn of the medial meniscus. The report also states that the ACL is not adequately seen. There's no joint effusion. I'm quite worried and hesitant about surgery. Can this be fixed through physiotherapy and a knee immobilizer? I really want to explore alternatives to surgery. Your insights would mean a lot to me during this challenging time. Thanks in advance for your help.

I can't answer that, but usually the best thing to do is not to worry about it and start doing your rehab. If you find that you are improving continue rehab, but if you find that you don't improve, then consider other options.

    Hi
I’m so thankful I found you. I had a bucket handle tear of my lateral meniscus 5 days ago and my knee was locked in flexion for 3 days when it suddenly opened with a pop.
Now I’m on anti inflammatory medication and have been advised arthroscopic menisectomy to be done after 5 days
I’ve started on your Physiotherapy routine from today.
I just hope I’ll get back to normal soon. I’m 57 years old but I run, do high altitude treks and strength train. My life looks pretty gloomy at the moment.

7 weeks ago my left knee locked. Hospital gave me some drugs to straighten it out and put a mechanical brace on it for 6 weeks. MRI says I have a small tear. Now brace is off and sports support is one and feels good. Am waiting for the UK NHS report before physio, but as i dont walk far but cycle a bit, is 7 weeks a good time to start doing some strength exercise (i have been stretching it within the confines of the brace). Havent had a shower in 6 weeks because of this mechanical support!!!

Rehab exercises are usually started within 5 days of sustaining a meniscus tear so I really don't think you have to wait for any reports before you go and see your physio. I would suggest that you speak to your doctor and get physio organised asap.

I have some lateral injury in my knee for 8 years. I went to a doctor in my original country and he said it was IT band. But I didn’t do any exercise for years and when I started again the pain came back in a week. After some research I think actually could be meniscus or ligaments injury. I’m training for a police officer physical test and my knee is getting swollen and accumulating liquid.
I scheduled doctor appointment but only for December 16. I’m not sure if I can treat with exercises.
