  • In this video from Dartmouth Health, viewers are provided with comprehensive guidance on post-surgical care and recovery following ACL knee surgery. The video emphasizes the importance of adhering to specific instructions for a smooth recovery process. Key points include the necessity of using crutches, wearing a brace, and engaging in physical therapy sessions. Patients are advised on managing pain through prescribed medications and are reassured about the low risk of addiction when used as directed. The video also covers practical aspects of postoperative care, such as showering precautions, infection prevention, and managing potential side effects like constipation and fatigue. Additionally, it addresses emotional well-being, acknowledging that patients may experience frustration or emotional slumps during recovery. The video underscores the importance of following the surgeon's and physical therapist's instructions, including weight-bearing precautions and exercise regimens, to ensure a gradual and successful recovery.

Got my ACL and meniscus surgery done 4 weeks ago. First week is super tough, you wake up really often and in a lot of pain. Plus I refused to take the Hydrocodone because I’ve seen people end up addicted to it. Doc swapped for Tramadol which didn’t help much tbh, now 4 weeks later I recovered about 80% of my motion back and the pain is almost gone. Physical therapy is crucial and you should really listen to them and you’ll be fine. Good luck!

I am 23 for comparable measures. I had ACL, meniscus and MCL surgery with a bruised knee cap 2 years ago. It was the worse pain i have ever experienced and i have a very high pain tolerance. Was peeing in a bottle for almost a week as i physically couldn’t take the pain of moving it in the slightest. I took physical therapy extremely serious and had a very good physician. After about a year i was at or very near what i was at prior to my ACL tear and even played basketball at pretty much at the same level maybe just a bit slowed. Fast forward to today 2 years later i just had ACL and Meniscus surgery on my other knee (yes they got both of mine sadly) from playing basketball again. I told my doctor and all my friends that will be the last time i pick up a basketball as it’s not worth going through this again. However i had surgery less then 12 hours ago and it is not nearly the same pain although i used the same surgeon because of how well my first ACL healed. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m used to the pain, know exactly what not to do and what to do, or if it’s just a case by case but i expected the worse pain imaginable like last time but i am already walking (on crutches) to the bathroom and as long as I’m taking my painkillers and icing it the pain isn’t really bad at all. I share my story to show that if i can do this TWICE anybody can. YOU can do this. Your brain is a powerful tool don’t let it physic you out. You are much more powerful then you believe. Good luck all !!

This is super encouraging!! Mine wasn’t an acl but a patellar tendon surgery (that I waited years for unfortunately) that got so bad my knee started dislocating while walking and even sleeping.
The first 4 days after surgery were the worst pain, nausea and discomfort -but now I’m at day 9 post surgery and I’m off the pain meds completely and I’m feeling a lot better already! I’m feeling less discouraged and hopeful for the future! And it’s kind of cool having 2 screws in my leg ngl

Hi..on the acl meniscus repair is it safe to try to start moving your leg right after surgery..I mean literally right after??is it safe to try to do leg raises?and quad flexes right after surgery??and is the quad flexes safe for the meniscus right after surgery or should I give it a few days...was told to do cpm next day after surgery at a very slow/low degree of bending ..I guess my questions is is it OK to start working out your meniscus with out aggravating it??and how to do you know when you're pushing it too soon after surgery?

Iam 8months after a acl tear and mensicus tear.. both surgically repaired and back at work 8 months later! i do decorative epoxy and concrete work so there some heavy labor involved and feel about 85% myself! Physical therapy is crucial and take it serious because it will help you long term! Things are tough the first 3 weeks after surgery as far as pain and after 3 months you should get rid of your limp! Everybody is different and dont let nobody's word get you discouraged, i promise you all things get better but you have to put in your work like i said! I've had 2 ACL surgeries - one on each of my knees at different times. Assuming your surgeon does a good job, the recovery is not as bad as you might think.
I took my painkiller (opiod) before bed for 1-2 weeks to help me sleep. During the day and after 1-2 weeks I only needed Tylenol for pain. Some days I didn't take pain meds at all.
Use your crurches to walk, and keep your leg straight when you are sitting, and lying down, by proping it up behind your ankle. Don't prop it up under your knee - you want as much extension in your leg as you can get (straightness). You don't want it bent.
Do your flexion (bending) and extension (straightening) exercises that your phyio/doctor gives you - these are the ones where you use your towel, exercise bands, and/or exercise ball to bend and straighten your leg. They are important in the first month or so after surgery.
Apart from that, just rest and relax. I wasn't up and moving around too much until about 2 weeks after surgery. Find yourself a butler to bring you food and ice during that time :)
    Good luck!

I had my ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair on Friday 22nd. I was told Hydrocodone takes 1 hrs to kick in and I have to take it every 4 hrs. Well I took it every three and a half hours and it always worked. No pain at all I finally stopped completely taking pain pills yesterday the 25th and still no pain. I do take the 600 ml ibuprofen because It helps with swelling and pain but I take that every 8 hours. My plan is to take half of hydrocodone once I start the therapy and see how that works out. But so far I've been blessed with no pain🙏 hoping the recovery continues for everyone also I keep my leg elevated all day every day with just one pillow underneath it and ice with the machine they gave me all day every day, hope it helps someone out. I have my follow up tomorrow the 27th of Oct.

I’m about 7 weeks post surgery with a hamstring graft for my ACL and meniscus tear. Never took narcotics for pain. I did have a nerve blocker though during surgery and highly recommend getting an ice machine and keeping consistent with your ibuprofen and Tylenol. The pain subsided dramatically after a few weeks and I haven’t had any discomfort since. I’ve regained most of my range of motion and been doing physical therapy 2 to 3 times a week plus at home stuff. I’m glad I went through with the surgery. I can tell my knee is more solid than it was before. Only bummer is not being able to snowboard this season but it’s been a weak winter anyway. Looking forward to getting on my mountain bike in the spring. 🤟🏻

Keep up with your physical therapy. It will suck, but the more time you spend doing physical therapy is less time you'll spend in a brace or on crutches.
Once you're out of the brace though start to gain mobility, be sure to use your knee when/as you can. 6 days ago I had my acl and meniscus surgery and I stopped taking my opioids at day 4 because they were making me nauseous so I’ve been using ibuprofen. I am instructed that I can weight bare as long as I have the straight brace on so far I am up and walking around without crutches and just a cane. Mind you I do use crutches when I go outside because it’s winter and I don’t want to risk a fall. I am not putting all my weight on my foot when I am walking, about 50%. I waited months and months before going and getting surgery done, maybe this is why I can somewhat tolerate the pain. My PT is surprised that I can walk even the slightest lol. I’m 24. I hope I recover fast and get back to work. Some of these comments about being out of work for 8 months are scaring me but I believe I can heal fast and get back to light duty within a couple months. I had a full rupture of my ACL and had a hamstring graft. You must not smoke prior to surgery- risk of blood clots. Maintain good personal hygiene. Always wash hands prior to touching around wound site, and maintain personal hygiene for everything. Also, ice is your friend, every two hours for two weeks I was advised, I put a clean towel on my skin first and then ice afterwards. You need a good diet- protein, milk, dairy, fish, meat, pulses, and vitamin c for wound healing and zinc.
Keep a little book and document when you take your medications and your anti coagulation injections as your injection needs to be same time. Make sure to wear your ted stockings for the first two weeks. Don’t be a martyr and just start doing too much, take advise if your surgeon and physio.

I just had ACL surgery 4 days ago using a hamstring autograft. Pain is manageable and I micro dosed the Tramadol into 1/4 or 1/6 of a dose as needed, which was super effective. The anxiety before surgery was worse than the feeling after the surgery. You can do it! It's worth it.

      @FarmerBenny 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@laurenwheeler2420 Hi Lauren, I also had a lot of anxiety going into my ACL surgery and it's normal. It's a real process and your anxiety is based on the reality that it's going to be difficult for a while. It does hurt after the surgery, but I can honestly say that it's worth it and you'll be very happy you did afterwards when you have a fully functioning knee. Try to visualize doing PT afterwards, getting your strength back, and getting back to the physical activities that make you happiest. The surgery is a necessary part of the process if you want to be active again. 100 years ago, when people got injured they just lived the rest of their lives without an ACL and probably needed a cane, so try to see surgery as a blessing, something that will allow you to at your strongest again. Anxiety is totally normal and sometimes we just need to feel anxious before a shitty thing happens. Surgery sucks. But you will get through it!

I'm 17 years old and currently on day 6 after having the ACL surgery. Man it has been a really rough week so far. The first days are hard but doable, because of the morphine that i took. But after 3 days i stopped the morphine because of constipation that was caused by the morphine. I am also on tylenol and naproxen (i dont know what its called in America). But the pain is heavy, i wake up often and cant sleep. I also cant find a comfortable way to lay in any position. I had physiotherapy today and my leg is completely SWOLLEN 😅. But i have been progressing, i can actually bend my knee for more then 90 degrees already, and can lift up my leg. For maybe any of you guys who still need to have the surgery, dont let this scare you. You have nothing to lose, yes the weeks after are rough but they are doable! It gives me motivation to see how much my knee is more functional day by day! Just keep livin you got this!

The process is frustrating, I really did throw my crutches around once haha, but I can already cycle and legpress and squats again. Although my meniscus was not done I also had a really solid surgery with ACL and another capsular strengthening because I am hyperflexible. Shivanand Baganavar I fractured my Patella and torn a tendon in my leg during soccer practice. It’s been about 4 months and 10 days since it happened. It’s a slow process that takes time. My tips are bending first, and then quad strength is the next most important.

Shivanand Baganavar it’s a long painful process. Definitely got better, after like weeks of surgery couldn’t walk on my own, do anything, etc it was pretty miserable. Had to have my parents help me out a lot. Now I can walk fully without a brace, working on quad strength a lot, bending (bending is most important at beginning to help break up scar tissue) so that you don’t have to get another surgery to remove all the scar tissue blocking you from bending. I can jog but cannot run or sprint or jump yet. It takes time bro, just be patient and it’ll come.
