  • Here is my take on trying to explain what the heck is going on in the opening scenes of Tenet.
    Reddit was a great resource for discussion and there were a lot of great insights.
    My approach was to try to keep things as simple as possible without having to bootstrap the entire thing.
    The terrorist attack was real.
    The CIA exchange was real.
    Sator used his knowledge to set up a heist to lift the algorithm from the CIA.
    Having observed The Protagonist's willingness to sacrifice himself, Tenet( or Future Protagonist) ensures his pill is fake so he can be recruited and continue the chain of events

    Tenet is just amazing. I recently had someone tell me this movie was "garbage" when brought up in conversation, which was pretty sad. This movie does an amazing job of showing how insanely complicated geo-politics can get, and the fact that the film is so complicated just to save the world from being destroyed without anyone even knowing what happened, it reinforces that idea of things going on in the shadows. "It's the bomb no one even knew existed". Honestly the Tenet organization could be %100 real and no one would even know.

    YOU’RE BACK WITH ANOTHER ONE!!!!

  • @omarsherief5690
    @omarsherief5690 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good explanation, let me tell you my conclusion to help who didn’t understand.
    What makes Tenet complicated is not only the too many parties involved, but rather that the entire film is like a loop of events all happening at the same time each with a new plan with the intention to change the past. That’s because inversion is unlike time travel, it’s more complicated.
    At first there are two major forces who have access to this inversion machine (Entropy)
    Two people (Sator and The Protagonist) with two different intentions are trying to change the past, so whenever one changes it in X direction the other takes it to Y direction.
    We’re introduced to this concept of loops trying to change the events of the past many times in the movie.
    So in order to understand the movie you have to re-imagine how it will look like if the past wasn’t manipulated by the future, and then slowly introduce the future manipulations one at a time,
    And look at it from each one of the two major powers point of view.
    So let’s imagine the opera siege without future manipulations from both parties perspectives.
    (Protagonist’s POV)
    CIA wants to buy the 241 from a Russian general, but they can’t do this in public, so they had to cover themselves with a siege, they hire some terrorists to attack the opera, disturbing everyone so that they can finish their operation, and they succeed. The 241 is now with the CIA (Which is the Protagonist’s side)
    (Sator’s POV)
    Sator knew about CIA’s plan from any source since he has a good relationship with the CIA, and since the 241 will end up in the CIA’s hands, he needs them to stay alive and on his side. So, he informed the Ukranians about the operation. While telling the CIA at the same time that the Ukranians knew about the transaction and that they have to rescue their CIA agent.
    The Ukranians send SWATs to kill both the terrorists and the Russians, while the CIA sends a small team to rescue their agent.
    But, unfortunately the Ukranians killed the CIA in the process. The 241 Ends up in the Ukranians hands.
    *DISCLAIMER*
    Now both The Protagonist and Sator inverted themselves to change what happened in the past at the same exact time. that’s when things starts getting really complicated, each 2 layers that are happening at the same time will have the same number but different POVs.
    (Layer 1, Protagonists POV)
    The Protagonist being a CIA member went back in time to rescue his team from the Ukranians, So he hired some local Ukranians (who are Pro-Russians and wanted the operation to succeed, I would call them Semi-Ukranians) to help him out, they gave him the same uniform as the rest of the Ukranians.
    The protagonist’s plan was to rescue the CIA member from the native Ukranians using the Semi-Ukranians as an asset, hoping that the 241 ends up in the Protagonist’s hands.
    (Layer 1, Staor’s POV)
    While Sator’s plan was to help the CIA out to succeed in the mission. (Sator wants to make sure that the CIA successfully escape the Ukranians) So sator sent a team of Russians who can speak Ukranian to help the Protagonist execute his plan and then they would take the 241 from him. Hoping that the 241 ends up in Sator’s hands.
    However, because Layer 1 have two different objectives the conflict starts, and neither of them succeed, So two other powers tries to change the past again, we will call them the Second Sator and The Second Protagonist.
    (Layer 2, Second Protagonist’s POV)
    The Protagnist went back in time, to save himself and his team from what he thinks is (a Semi-Ukranians plan) this time changing the plan a bit, he thought since the Ukranians don’t really know how the well dressed man (the CIA agent) looked like, he would swap him out and send him through a different exit with the 241. And then he and the swaped agent would go to the Semi-Ukranians and kill them. Hoping that the 241 ends up in the Protagonist’s hands.
    (Layer 2, Second Sator’s POV)
    While at the same exact time, Sator tells those Semi-Ukranians he sent: how the well dressed man looks like, hoping that the Protagonist won’t win and that the 241 ends up in his hands.
    So again Layer 2 have two parties in conflict with each other because both are trying to change the past at the same time.
    Now we have 4 people in conflict.
    If that’s not complicated enough, take this.
    Two other Powers join the Conflict. The TENET team made by The Third Protagonist and The Third Sator both are in the far future.
    (Layer 3, Third Protagonist’s POV)
    Tenet in the far future knew about the conflict that will happen between the old Protagonists and the old Sators
    So Neil rescues the old Protagonist inside the opera, and the other agent gives him a fake pill that’s not suicide pill so that he stays alive while everyone else think he’s dead. And steal the 241 from the Ukranians who took it in the original timeline.
    (Layer 3, Third Sator’s POV)
    Also knew about the conflict between the Old Protagonists and old Sators. So, he inverts himself Because at the same exact time he wants the Protagonist alive to steal the 241 from the Ukranians and then Sator take it from the Protagonist.
    So, the film starts here. 6 Powers trying to change the past at the same time, each of them knowing what will happen before it happens.
    If there was no invertion, the 241 would’ve ended up in the Ukranians hands and that would be it.

    • @omarsherief5690

      To be honest I still don’t really know how inversion works, and if the Ukranians really killed the CIA in the original timeline.

    or maybe i missed out something in the film

    • @WelbyCoffeeSpill
      @WelbyCoffeeSpill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is never explained in the film. I don't think they want you to care about those details.
      But if I had to try to explain it:
      As a normal person, we see objects because photons bounce off and carry that information into our retinas. If you see an inverted person walking around, that is because photons are hitting that inverted person and bouncing to you. So photons Are hitting them in normal time.
      For an inverted person, those photons that were hitting you in normal time are reversed, right.
      So they would start off, from your perspective, inside you with that information.
      Then pass through your retina, but going out.
      Either way, that information is pinging your retina, so you perceive the image.
      The photons/information is just backwards, hence why you'd observe the world around you backwards.
      same thing for soundwaves. The wave is still vibrating your eardrum, but played backwards, which is why everything sounds backwards. to you.

    • @WelbyCoffeeSpill
      @WelbyCoffeeSpill  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!
      One of the reasons this sequence is so complicated is because Sator has already tried to influence it from the future.
      One fundamental difference between Tenet, specifically Neil, is that for the most part he believes there is no changing the past. But even he is not 100% about that and is why he doesn't want to chance anything and goes into the tunnel to save Protagonist.
      Sator, on the other hand, much like the future Bad guys, believe it is worth it to risk the past to save the future. So they try anyways.
      In this case, Yes, Sator failed and nothing can change that as far as we know.
      But Sator still can use that event to gain information that he can use in His future.
      Like say, make sure he tells his goons to kidnap the Well-Dressed man and interrogate him.
      Ultimately, Protagonist's deception by replacing him with another agent ruined that plan.

    • @WelbyCoffeeSpill
      @WelbyCoffeeSpill  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's a good question. Although Sator does have ties with CIA, I don't think he has a mole there, either.
      It may be easier and more probable that he learned about it from the Russian side of the trade.
      Some rogue Russian general formerly in charge of Soviet missile sites got hold of , what he thought, was cold-war plutonium and put the word out he was selling on the black market. Sator could have learned about it from the underground market by bribing people.

    This never made sense to me: Neil fires an inverted round to save the protagonist but he himself does not behave like he is inverted. Is he walking backwards on purpose to blend in? Does he just have an inverted pistol to confuse the protagonist and later cause him to inquire about it? Seems like he would've met with the scientist lady anyway, so that doesn't seem necessary.
    If you ask me, Nolan just didn't wanna go too heavy on the inversion that early in the film, and we're seeing an inverted neil walk backwards to blend in.

    What happen if after "grabbing" an inverted object we try to throw it ?
    Do it will act like the cars, by being normal when normal people act on it or inverted when invert people act on ?
    Oppose resistance ?
    If I throw sator's gold on a wall, from gold perspective, was it trew by the wall to my hand ?

    • @WelbyCoffeeSpill
      @WelbyCoffeeSpill  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the film it is shown that normal people can apply a force to an inverted object.
      Like when Protagonist kicks the inverted gun away in the hallway fight.
      So yes, from the gun's perspective, it was pulled back to normal Protagonist's foot.
      With inverted objects there seems to be two ways you can affect it.
      By picking it up and throwing it.
      Or by willfully 'intending' to to drop it, like the bullet scene.
      But this cannot always work since you do not know the future. If nothing will interfere, then you should be able to unDrop things.

    Wow I didn't think opera had this much complexity and interlocking plots woven in. However I think there's also another interpretation of the purpose of the bombs. Ukrainians knew the transaction is taking place and so they decided to take advantage of the siege, interrupt the transaction and take the plutonium for themselves. This is the protagonist's theory who says "they're covering their tracks". The bombs aren't for dramatic effect, their purpose is to obfuscate what really happened and where the package really went. If the SWAT plan went according to plan nobody else would know what really happened or who owns the material and everyone except team orange would be the loser of this game.
    But of course they could never suspect that future protagonist and Sator were wrestling for the package with their own pawns across space and time using their knowledge of the future.

    • @WelbyCoffeeSpill
      @WelbyCoffeeSpill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The scene is so vague with several anchor points that we just don't know.
      And the beauty is, we can fill it with anything as long as it agrees with those anchor points. Your idea seems to be just fine as well, providing the Ukrainians sacrificed the audience for Plutonium. The events will still play out logically. +1

      @@WelbyCoffeeSpill Yep the main events just revolve around JDW going undercover to extract the agent and recover the plutonium. Literally anything could be happening between the terrorists and the SWAT using gas and planting bombs. Russian SWAT killed over 150 people with poison gas in the Moscow theatre siege in 2002. It's all going on in the background in this scene, JDW is the focus

    • @RShadow12
      @RShadow12 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the film, Priya is the wife of Sanjay Singh, a powerful Indian arms dealer living in Mumbai. It can be assumed that Priya was recruited into TENET before she met Sanjay, and it was upon her recruitment that she was given the following intel:
      1. TENET’s mission: allow Andrei Sator to assemble the Algorithm so TENET can then steal it and thus prevent the future-antagonists from acquiring it, for the future-antagonists are the ones who want to use the Algorithm to reverse the direction of time so they can destroy the past in hopes that it will save their present, which is in ruins.
      2. Her involvement: she must sell Sator the ammunition that will be used in his operation.
      It is the second piece of intel that, in theory, leads Priya to forming a relationship with Sanjay Singh. By marrying Sanjay, Priya gets access to his arms-dealing empire, thus giving her a “masculine front” for selling arms to Sator. Therefore, influenced by Priya, Sanjay sells the ammunition to Sator. Though, it seems certain that Sanjay is unaware of Priya’s involvement with TENET and thus her true motivations when it comes to their relationship.
      Now, when The Protagonist and Neil infiltrate Sanjay’s penthouse, Priya initially does not know that they are involved in TENET’s operation. It isn’t until Priya hears TP talk to Sanjay that she tests him (the TENET hand gesture and code-word). TP does the hand-TENET gesture and code-word back, thus confirming his involvement. Knowing this, Priya then gives him the necessary information to send him on the right path to getting involved with Sator.

As Priya states in the car, she is the one in charge of tying up loose ends. It isn’t until TP discovers his true role in TENET that he determines that HE is the one responsible for tying up loose ends, Priya included.

    I really like your channel, and do like Tenet the film. However, I do think Nolan's insistence in only showing the specific mission in a larger world was a mistake, especially since there will likely never be a sequel or spin off. I think the film would have benefitted from a structure closer to Interstellar, Prestige, or Oppenheimer, showing more of the future events in parallel. It could have still been trippy, mind-bending, and 'confusing' (I don't find the movie particularily confusing as is), but showing the future would have made the stakes seem more 'real', at least in my opinion. The Algorithm remains a poor threat/MacGuffin, in my opinion, since unlike, say, the (admittedly fantastical) disappearing photograph in Back to the Future, the stakes of it never feel real or tangible.

    Hi, i am brazilian. I have two question, i wanted you to explain to me. This film has as its principle the term, it happened happened.
    This is bad and complicated. But I have two scenes in mind that fascinate me, where the future alters the past.
    1 - The first scene and in the opera, Neil was induced by the future to save the protagonist.
    2 - And the other scene is the end, the protagonist kills the prya, where the future also alters the past. The future can change the past, many say that the movie is unnecessary because nothing is changed. Can you clarify for me, if the future can change the past using the machine.

      In this movie it is implied that you Cannot change the past. But that does not make it unnecessary.
      Inverting does not let you Change the Past.
      Inverting allows you to be part of the Past, but with extra knowledge. Or to be there to learn something to use in the Future.
      1- Neil was sent back to the Opera to be apart of the event. There was never a timeline where he was not there.
      2- There is no universe where Kat was killed by Priya. Kat left a message to say she felt scared. Protagonist went back and killed Priya before she could shoot Kat.
      Sator did not know where Protagonist hid the algorithm in the car scene.
      He inverted and went back. He did not change Anything. But , he discovered that Protagonist hid it inside the Saab car. And got it back After the events.
      For some reason though. The future bad guys think they can do something to help them. They think they can change/destroy the past.
      .
      Perhaps there are multiple timelines but it is never observed in the film. Neil states that there is no way to know,..but it is not an excuse to do nothing. and so Tenet believes they must stop them from even trying,

    Don’t you think the Protagonist actually consumed a poison pill? Seems like they could have inverted him to reverse the effects. His teeth were fixed when he awoke. This could have been done while inverted.

      Inversion doesn't work that way here. You cannot undo things that have already happened.
      If Protagonist was dead or wounded, placing him inside a turnstile will just send him backwards through time as a dead or wounded body.
      Any normal person observing him will see him unwound,..but only up until he reverse exits the turnstile he was inverted from and disappear.

      @@WelbyCoffeeSpill Kat was near death after Sator shot her. She was inverted to undo the damage.

      @@ZolliT She was near death, correct. She was shot. But inverting her doesn't undo the bullet wound.
      What was 'killing' her was the inverted radiation from the bullet.
      So by inverting her, she will match up and "cancel" out the radiation part so she can heal normally.
