It’s known as the AE86, the Trueno, the eight-six, but one thing is certain: There is no car more iconic in anime and in drifting than the Toyota Corolla AE86. The actual Drift King in Japan drove one, it’s the reason many of us got into drifting, and today we get to go Bumper 2 Bumper on one!

It's weird how despite all the modifications Takumi and Bunta put on the AE86 and the whole Inertia Drift technique, the best mod for not spilling the tofu would be to simply move the tofu tray to the middle of the car.

The point of Initial D wasn’t that AE86 was a good car. It was that a junk car used for Tofu delivery beat multiple high powered race cars.
But it wasn't a junk car. Nor they showed it as a junk car... It was just old and slow compared to rx7, GTR, evo etc.

I've seen a couple videos of this car, showcasing that it can get around the Nurburgring in under nine minutes. For what is essentially a 35 year-old Toyota Corolla, that is impressive.

Fun Fact, outside of japan Ireland has the one of most amounts of AE86's/twincams and it had nothing to do with inital D, we just really loved them from release, cheap, rwd, can do rings, fairly common to see

@@clancyschannel5965in Initial D, they mentioned numerous time how Hachi Roku is underpowered and should have no hope against the like of Evo and Godzilla but according to the manga / anime it matters less in a twisty downhill battle which is why the main character always race downhill. I recalled Itsuki’s father mentioned that Bunta spent his life developing the car so I assume the AE86 is modified in some ways.
Anw try driving one, they are super fun. The way car sounds, throttle response, body roll etc. are factors in the car’s fun - ness, not only horsepower.
Fun fact: Did you know that listening to eurobeat while driving a Japanese car will give you at least 10,000 more horsepower?

Hi Donut Media. I apsalutly love your videos and have a great laugh watching them. I just wanted to point out that the Silvertop 20valve does not have vvt like a honda but it does have vct "variable cam timing" It works by retarding the whole intake camshaft as revs increase. This increases the duration of the compression stroke and also lessens the risk of the piston hitting the valves at high rpms. I hope this helps, keep making more videos!

and doesnt it make more than 130hp? I thought peak power for a silvertop was in the 145hp range. 130hp sounds like a smallport motor.

Sergio Aguirre you cant really compare both.
Wangan is about driving to the limit at sustained speed for a good amount of time. A hashiriya is capable of driving 320km/h in 15 minutes or more, just to compare a modern ferrari or bugatti will burst in flames if they ever tried that, plus the factor of traffic in wangan makes it more technical and advanced.
I tried. It's not as good. While Initial D is mastering corner cutting Wagan Midnight Club is mastering passing a truck without spinning out. It was really hard to take it serious at all.

VVT - Variable Valve Timing, not VVL - Variable Valve Lift. The 20v motors never came with variable lift.
+1 to that should have 2zz swapped it if you wanted lift
They came with neither.
It came with T-VIS. God I hate when popular youtubers misinform people.
Toyotas first vvt was in mid 90s with 3sgte beams and some other motor.

Hate to break it to you, but the AE86 kind of sucks. That was actually why they used it in Initial D. They intentionally used a ridiculously slow car to make Takumi's technique that much more impressive, and to better hammer home the point that technique matters more than power ever could

If I'm not mistaking, Vvti adjusts the timing of the cams and not the duration, what you described looks like vvtL-i or V-tec

@@kmcdonnell83 to be more specific the 20v only uses VVT on the intake cam. It switches between on and off (2 speed settings) instead of variable speeds like VVT-i

The AE-86 is a vehicular legend. I have a weak spot for Sedans with great driving comfort, but the AE-86 speaks to me in a way that I can't comprehend but find nice. There's something about this legend on 4 wheels that is special despite the fact that is is not a Sedan and that it doesn't have 4 doors.

Haha! I feel you. I had a sr5 and I said to myself I won’t swap it then after a coupe of years that I owned it, I swapped in a 4ag. I would say if your going to get an sr5 just look 4 a gts and save yourself sourcing all the stuff needed to covert it to gts.
