Yeah, if they tried to sell them in Corvette numbers, the EPA would have intervened. One of the reasons that I've heard given for the low production numbers is so that Chysler/it's current owners could skirt it under the CAFE requirements.

I remember many years ago, my buddy and I were in a pretty heavily modified Evo 9 MR (it beat super-charged Vettes all day) and we got the chance to race an SRT10 Viper. On the third honk, we floored it and I remember kind of ducking down because of this sudden horrendous noise. It sounded like the Viper had blown its engine. We had gotten to well over 100 Mph when we began slowing down. My friend and I were both looking behind us for the smoking remnants of that V10 engine, but we couldn't see any. Finally we saw the Viper slowing down about 25 car-lengths in front of us. We chatted with the guy a bit. He said that they race this particular car and, at sea level and on race gas, it's a tad over 1000HP.

If you haven’t yet, I highly recommend you drive one. If you think that pedal box on the Gen 3 is weird, the Gen 1 is even more cramped to the point where they didn’t even try to fit a dead pedal. There are no windows, no exterior door handles, traction control, ABS. Just the V10 with a hot sounding cam, 6 speed, and massive tires.

As Harry Ricardo put it in his 1923 book on the matter, an engine becomes "high speed" when the dynamic forces on the components becomes the dominant design consideration and when effective heat transfer becomes a necessity too as the cycle rate increases. That's as opposed to simply withstanding pressure and temperature, or being the correct shape and size and strong enough to hold itself up etc.
High speed engines are light and stiff, then, rather than stout and sturdy. Obviously there's a huge continuum between something like a Honda generator and one of their MotoGP engines, but they are still more similar in design to each other than either is to something like a container ship engine.

The car handled great, sounded great until I later went to Florida. Once in The Sunshine State, the gear shifter bezel was almost as hot as the exhaust and the interior wasn’t much cooler - even with the air conditioner running full blast.
That being said - almost 20 years later - I would still recommend that EVERY car enthusiast at least rent a Viper for the weekend. No video can give that car or the team of Dr. Frankensteins who created it the appreciation it truly deserves.

Imagine what the Viper could've been if Dodge showed it even an ounce of the dedication and care that GM gave to the Corvette and Camaro Z-models.
Dodge consistently produced a car that was raw, unsafe, more expensive, less refined, and less technologically equipped than the Corvette for a significantly higher price. Looking at the interior and electronics of the Viper, it never evolved beyond 1990s kit-car interior quality and electronics -- which is utterly wild, given the incredible success Oreca and Zakspeed saw in the late 90s/early 2000s in professional motorsport.
There is absolutely zero excuse for Dodge (and Ford, with the Ford GT) to have not been able to deliver a sportscar that competed with the Corvette for the same sticker price as a Corvette.
There is absolutely zero excuse for Dodge and Ford to not have produced Corvette-price competitive sportscars in the Ford GT and the Viper.

I’ve driven it many times and I really hesitate to call it a proper sports car because it’s just so big and bulky and is very tail happy. The ride quality could best be described as “punishing”. The 10 cylinder is a monster, but it sounds like the truck engine that it is, it sure doesn’t sing like a Miura or a 365gtb/4. It’s a car made for driving very fast in a straight line, it’s not a car for winding roads. The later model Vipers were much better, like the one in this video.

I bought this car a month ago and I could not be happier. Interestingly, this particular Viper is extra special. Not only is it one of 100 VOI.9 examples, it also has the super rare Mopar Performance Option that added Belanger headers (as Tedward noted), full high-performance exhaust, a much hotter camshaft ("lope noted by Ted), an aggressive ECO tune, along with other modifications. There were 9 such cars built and output is estimated ~650-675hp (vs 510 in a "normal 2006 Viper). I plan to dyno it in the spring. Arrow/Prefix worked with Dodge to juice a few of the last Gen 3's to keep the excitement up before (600hp) Gen 4s made their debut 18 months later. There were no 2007 Vipers so this is why Dodge gave the unusual OK to add a factory-endorsed performance option (vs a cosmetic/paint only variant). This car is a beast and I feel very lucky and happy to be its next owner!

@@TedwardDrives Thanks, I am enjoying the heck out of it. Your video is spectacular, btw. Clearly, you're a talented driver. Since this is the first Viper I have owned, could you dive a bit deeper re: how you felt this example drove/performed versus a "normal" gen 3? To me, it seems like a (very fun) handful. But as you correctly commented, all Vipers are nanny-free!

Now that you mention it how much torque does the viper have with all the upgrades 650 - 675 hp

    • @RoundPortII
      @RoundPortII ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@Kingofdestruction2019 well the 645hp 2017 viper has 600 torque so my guess would be my Arrow Viper is in the 610-650 tq range. Plan to dyno it next year.

That is one of the best, if not *THE* best and most honest reviews of the Viper I've seen.
I've been so lucky as to see the Vipers at Le Mans from '96 through to 2015 and at the Spa 24hrs since '96 as well. Rarely have I seen a more hardcore racing GT.
And indeed, that sound, that sound....

I would just like to mention that my uncle was the original owner of this particular car and spec’ed it out when he ordered it and this voi9 has the engine package which brought it up to 650 HP AND had the lightened flywheel option which I believe only 2 other people chose to do.. So yea a little more rare than mentioned in the video..

Awesome video. Certainly not the Pinnacle of modern performance, although it might be the peak of visceral exhilaration! This generation of viper is my dream car for all the reasons you mentioned. I was actually unaware of the VOI edition vehicles, but gives me something further to keep an eye on. Great video.
