    You need a week in the Crimson Guitar workshop! Love what you're doing though... taking a boring LP and making it a bit special is always a treat at the end. Plus the dramatic stage effects ... just needs dramatic lighting and you've got yourself a B movie.

    I have this model in black with the ebony board. 1997. I bought it thinking it would be a stop gap and stepping stone to replacing the Gibson Les Paul Traditional and SG Standard I sold before I married an American and quickly divorced (very strange story involving being accused of being an election interfering Russian spy, even though I am a Kiwi).
    But what a guitar! The studio sounds so good. I have had several Gibsons ranging from 1955 through to Custom Shop Les Paul guitars. I like this one best apart from the 1955 SJ acoustic I bought with my apprentice money when i was a kid.
    Frets have had a crown and level before I bought it and are getting worn already, which is the only issue. I may go for slightly taller stainless ones. Not sure yet.
    I even liked the much maligned 498t/490r pickup set, although I did swap them out for a Whole Lotta Humbucker set that I already had (my favorite all rounder lower output passive pickup).
    I did not know that mid 90s Studios had a good reputation until after I bought it. I can see why. It makes me want to try a SG Special from the same era (SGs are hit and miss in my experience. Some are fantastic, others are meh. Not sure why).
    It is a heavy guitar. I do not know the weight relief pattern for it, if it has one. Not fussed. It sounds so good. Lots of peeps say their guitar resonates well. This one does. Neck and body allow it to resonate, rather than dampening it like some guitars can.
    Long story short is I thought it would be a stepping stone and it ended up being my favourite guitar I have had since 1987. I got lucky, which does not happen very often (I am the only person I know that regularly gets not a single number correct on their lotto ticket :D )

    • @TheGuitarGeek
      @TheGuitarGeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Somehow I missed the secret line to comment, but I watched the video to the end.
    Are you gonna go with a cool wiring? A Freeway switch 3x3-03/-04/-05/-07 and some push pull pots for coil-split would get really cool, maybe not only coil-split but coil-select. I have an ST-guitar HSS with an enhanced wiring, I have coil-select for the humbucker.

    Nice job mate. Always wanted one of these Les Pauls from the 90s. Wish Gibson started making them again with the ebony board. Now that you're busy working for Thomann (I was very pleased that this happened for you, I remember one video from before where things were pretty tough, so I'm chuffed that Thomann saw how good you are and snapped you up) does that mean you no longer live in the UK?

    You're a braver man than I am. I'm currently restoring my 92' Les Paul Studio and the diy stopped at the strip and paint. I haven't done it and would be beyond frustrated by burning, warping, or gouging the wood with the scraper. I'm going to pay through the nose for Gibson to do it. As Dirty Harry said, "a man's got to know his limitations".

  • @marcojeronimo8933

    Hey... But on a les Paul with binding I guess it's critical with the heat gun not to off the binding right?

  • @brianricker1703
    @brianricker1703 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would have grabbed the heat gun, and within 4 minutes the guitar, my garage, my house, and half of the neighborhood would have been ashes.The fire department would have investigated, and their root cause would be logged in their official reports as: "Dumbass". :-)

    O m g ... andy andy andy !! Im not sure how long ago you did this ... but I wish you would have mentioned it somewhere before doing this .... you could have saved yourself about 3 & a 1/2 hours worth of time if I had known bud. I've stripped 2 gibby's .. 1st was a V that I had used acetone to get the red/cherry off of .. (while it works its too slow & damn harmful) .. BUT when I refinished the SG Special i had from worn brown to natural the best method was using a furniture stripper .... litterly 10 minutes on a wettened by the stripping solution & the nitro will come off like a hot knife thru butta !! The ONLY thing you have to watch in that reguard though IS the nut & fret marker inlays/binding as it WILL melt it if its plastic synthetic stuff. (some of the stuff is in my back video's on my channel)
    That said look forward to seeing how it comes out bud !! :)
    Awesome job on the protection !

      Yes this was my question as well. I have done furniture refinishing but no guitar and was thinking that method you used was painful compared to the furniture stripper. Watching this has given me an idea. I have a black les Paul studio. Lately I've been seeing this trend of dark tops light stained back and sides. So like a all black top and then the back and sides of a gold top say. I can take all the paint off the back and sides leave the top paint then refinish the back and sides to make it look prettier. I doubt it will actually look prettier but what's the worst that can happen lol...
