When I removed paint from a Strat I used 'Nitromors All Purpose Paint And Varnish Remover.' Might be worth considering when/if you do this again.

From Leo: You are doing quite well at the most unsatisfying part of the job. I am ok with smooth sanding, sealing, spraying, wet sanding and polishing, because each step feels like progress. Stripping one to get to the starting point is very labor intensive and always seems like not much progress is made for the time and effort. Of course any shortcuts in prep will always show to the finished product.

It is good to have caught up on your channel, Andy. I agree that On the Bench is a great segment. I have not yet started recording my gear lessons, hence all I can say regarding the future is: “Hey! Where is the sanding?!”

Can you see how many pieces of maple were used to form the top by looking at the exposed edges? The most I’ve found on my Les Pauls is 5, this is on a wine finished 1978 Deluxe . You can see the joins though the semi transparent nitro.

Hey, where’s the sanding? Great series. I don't think I'll attempt a refinish anytime soon after watching this. But I am looking forward to the finishing and perhaps taking a crack and building and finishing an LP kit. Does anyone know if there's any kits with a fat 1958 style neck?

Its a pity you aren't able to do the top too. That 'black' would look much better as a maple cap - even if you do a translucent black so you can see the wood grain of the maple. That would still keep the sentiment but just look much neater and cooler...

Annddyy .. you should have had a mask on for the acetone bud !! geesh its not fun stuff to mess with in fact I felt like I was re-living the intoxication from when I used it without a mask or ventilation !! LOL
Now how you went about this scraping the majority off using a scraper + heat .. THEN wiping off the rest with acetone is the right call as you can see you almost got it all clear off. A tip ... you can steam out that divet on the edge of the top using a wet cloth & a sodering iron or cloths iron. Ken boudereau, will gelvin & a few others on youtube have shown this technicque to get rid of even fair size divits in guitar bodies of wood.
I'd give it another DEEP wet wipedown with acetone on those area's before your final sand to pull the nitro out of the wood pours.
Keep it up bud & cant wait to see the finished product !! :)

Damn you, now I feel an itch to get rid of the lacquer on my LP clone's neck. My only concern is that I may discover really ugly joints and wood under it... The body is plywood on my poor old 90's Tanglewood Star 501. The neck resonates well but the body is... well.... plywood. I have already fitted 57 PAF style pickups, replaced the tuners, bridge and nut and am waiting on a new wiring harness for it. Leveling and redressing the frets was a nightmare. The lengths one must go to when you can't justify spending a lot of money on the guitar you actually want 😳
Still, in the end she will be what I made her, there is a particular satisfaction in a project guitar.

I would only recommend doing this on something you know ain’t plywood. Might look funky though!

I tried acetone on an 60s Ibanez Tele years ago and it was a nightmare Andy. It took gallons and cost a fortune. You’re doing a fantastic Job, very therapeutic and enjoyable to watch 😀 hey where’s the sanding !!

SAND THAT PUPPY!!!!! Looking good Andy. And yes, I believe you made the correct choice of using heat then acetone in the manner you did. One should be very cautious when using acetone, as it will destroy any plastics it is allowed to be left on for any length of time. Had the body and neck been bound I would have screamed, even though you wouldn't have heard! Can't wait to see it finished!

    • @TheGuitarGeek
      @TheGuitarGeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, where's the sanding?!
Great project. I have a LP Studio and find this particularly interesting. But I would enjoy this more if it were slightly more condensed. I am not impatient, but episode 3 was essentially a longer version of episode 2. I think those could have been combined in a single 20-minute video. Episode 1 was awesome, episode 2 was interesting, but IMO could have been sped up a bit more. Episode 3 was a little hard for me to sit through.
Just my opinion and my attempt at some constructive criticism. I mean no offense!
I agree that the wood looks really beautiful, and I look forward to seeing what comes next.
If I were more ambitious, I think this would be a cool project for any guitarist, but it would probably turn out to be a nightmare for me. You're putting quite a few hours into this and you've done all of this before. What takes you a day would probably take me 4. I hope your friend is paying you well!

Thanks for the feedback Ted. I agree with you that these two parts could’ve been the same video but they represent two different work Weeks. It is extremely time-consuming so I put in what I can in a week and then release the video. I promise this week will be excellent
