I recently stumbled on Joe Rogan clip that immediately caught my eye. It’s called “is mental illness mostly a vitamin deficiency” and part of interview with biologist Gary Brecka, where both talk about the role nutrients play in mental illness. Let's react to it and talk about the things I agree and disagree with.

Yep mental health issues are caused by nutrition deficiencies also a small percent of that with deficiencies you could have a undiagnosed tick bite diseases and or mold in your body. You need a holistic DR or functional medicine MD to do the thorough testing reg drs and providers will never do that. You want thorough nutrition blood tests done to check where you are deficient. thorough tick bite disease blood test and a urine mold test done most accurately. 90 percent of the time it's just a nutrition deficiency but you want all those tests done to rule things out unless you have mental health issues forever. Meds are trash and dont fix anything that makes you sicker. The fastest and most effective way to fix deficiencies is nutrition iv therapy( some examples Myers cocktail IV, immune boost IV there are many types) or nutrition injections( some examples Vitamin D injection b vitamin injections). you get Optimal levels the same day instead of waiting several months with supplements. A lot of holistic providers and medical spas do nutrition iv therapy and nutrition injections. skip supplementing. Nutrition IVs and Nutrition injections give you 100 percent absorbtion through blood stream at a high dose. Incredible results. Main nutrition deficiency for mental health issues and lots of other health issues is B vitamins, D and magnesium but there can be others too. It is not taught in america, america wants you sick. but holistic drs in america are the answer for those issues.

While I volunteered at a homeless shelter for the youth in Seattle I was also a sous chef at an Italian restaurant so I knew I could step up their meal game, so I started asking them if they had food allergies or intolerances, and what prompted me to do so is I noticed quite a few had visible rashes on their hands, like eczema. I knew that to be associated with an imbalance in the microbiome so I started digging, and what I found out was startling. The vast majority did, in fact have intolerances that they could not avoid since doing so as a poor person means going hungry. And almost all of them talked about gut issues and when I got to know a few of them a bit they opened up and talked about pressure in their heads, which could be caused by undigested proteins getting lodged causing damage to microstructures. I believe in many cases, that is the cause of many emotional and psychological disturbances, depression and anxiety in particular.

I am telling you this in the hopes you or someone out there can conduct a study or a series of studies to determine if that is indeed the case. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who suspects it. And have since come across some studies that link processed food, and ongoing exposure to allergens to psychopathy/emotional disturbances.

My doctor and I struggled for years with my depression. Finally, I came to a realization. Whenever I was depressed, I craved fruit, although it took me almost 20 years to figure it out since I was always depressed. I thought I just loved fruit.
With a little research, I discovered two things: 1) the first symptom of vitamin C deficiency is depression. 2) Those on the autism spectrum or who suffer from schizophrenia often require larger, or even MUCH larger, amounts of vitamin C than normal.
I'm not schizophrenic, but I am on the spectrum so... I began testing to see if the fruit craving and/or depression disappeared and at what point. It took about a week of testing to find that the depression and cravings disappear at ~4500 mg/day. Since your body can only absorb about 1000 mg/hour, I have to spread it out in multiple doses throughout the day. After a few months at this level, changes in my gut prompted me to lower it to between 1500 and 2500 mg/day. Evidently the long-term deficiency had been resolved since the new, lower level worked fine, but if I drop below that, it only takes a couple days for symptoms to show up again so I try to stay at just about 2500/day.
I've had no signs of depression ever since.

American friends eat my bread and they're shocked. One woman turned me and she said that she didn't know bread could be an entire food in itself. She was surprised how satisfying it was. Bread should be nuturing. If you want to rebel against your system, learn to make your own food. Even better if you can have a garden. Even a very small one. Even just a little pot of an herb.

You often become deficient in folate largely due to gut disbiosis. While short chain fatty acids are promoted as having amazing benefits they are not all the same. Gut bacteria that thrive on simple carbs tend to produce more propionate than acetic acid (the main scfa in the microbiome) or butyrate. This has to be carboxylated in the body, which in the brain requires folate. Those with autism tend to have high levels of propionic acid in the gut and depleted levels of folate. If you inject propionic acid into mice it instantly gives the symptoms of autism.
Some benefits of doing occasional extended fasting: High blood pressure is lowered to normal levels very quickly while fasting. Fibrosis/scarring is reversed over time, including in the heart and lungs.
Fasting increases T cell production and regenerates the thymus. T cells are vital in fighting cancer, autoimmune disease and infections but as we age the thymus stops making as many of them. Fasting releases stem cells, which then can become new T cells. Fasting also releases growth hormone, which regenerates the thymus itself, which aids this process!
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria, plaques and viruses by the immune system. This will also remove any spikes, whether natural or unnatural in origin!
Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body.
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered when fasting, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job.
Vitamin D plasma levels are increased as fasting improves metabolic health, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy.
Reflexes and short term memory are increased.
Fasts from 36-96 h increase metabolic rate due to norepinephrine release!
Telomeres are lengthened and fasting also increases anti-aging Yamanaka factors.
After 72 hours or more fasted, your body recycles up to 1/3 of all immune bodies, rejuvenating your entire immune system. This helps prevent the onset of new autoimmune conditions, which develop through a leaky gut and damaged immune system.
Fasting can help with MS, Depression, BPD, Autism and seizures.
Thymus is regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. The thymus also plays a vital role in fighting cancer.
Weight loss from daily caloric restriction has 1/4 to 1/3 of the weight lost as lean tissue while many studies show fat loss from 36 h fasts without losing any lean tissue!
The obese will lose extra tissue like loose skin while fasting, but the skinny or frail will have increased growth hormone release than the obese, which helps to make more lean tissue and reduce frailness.
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell required for viruses to replicate.
The hunger hormone ghrelin also lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting.
What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast. Most teas and herbs are OK. Most supplements and meds will either break ketosis directly or contain a filler that will. Many meds are dangerous to take while fasting.
Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it when the fast is broken by increasing lutenizing hormone. Fasting also increases insulin sensitivity, which helps with muscle building.
Fasting reduces pain and anxiety by stimulating the endocannabinoid system in a similar way to CBD oil.
One day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! This reduces leptin resistance, which impairs immune function.
Stomach acid is reduced over time while fasting and can allow for the healing of treatment resistant ulcers. Some patients may need continued acid reduction medication while fasting.
Does the body preferentially prefer glucose as a fuel? No. Except for brief periods of very intense exercise, your body mainly burns fats in the form of free fatty acids. Your brain also prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when they are available in equal quantity to glucose.
Fasting stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle damaged proteins and foreign matter such as viruses. It will can kill cancerous and senescent cells
Lowering insulin via fasting virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism, fighting infection and cancer prevention!
Fasting releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth. This can help a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
When not in ketosis, the brain can only burn carbohydrate, which produces a great deal of damaging ROS the brain has to deal with.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells, destroying them. Senescent cells are responsible for many of the effects of aging and are a root cause of the development of cancer.
A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row also provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD usually has 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and extremely low carbs.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. They also help with dementia and many other issues even if you take them while not fasting!
Glycine and trimethylglycine can also be useful supplements while fasting that won't break ketosis and have many benefits.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness or tremors, then simply break the fast and seek advice.

I feel 90% better. No heart palpitations, I’m sleeping, no panic attacks. I was a frequent flyer in the ER for what I thought were heart attacks. 😅 I do need to cut processed foods and sugar. @@deathbybears I had a systemic infection going due to a filling I lost in 2020 and had to wait until 2021 to get it filled bc of the plandemic. Grrr. I was severely ill for 2+ years, plus the fda was trying to take my natural thyroid med away and so I couldn’t get it for a time and went into thyroid crisis and almost died in 2022, additionally I was living in an apartment with deadly mold issues (I just got out of there 3 mo ago). So earlier this year I had to get the tooth causing the infection out, so I had the root canal tooth and amalgams out too while I was there (took 2 visits to a biologic dentist). I friend paid for all of it for me as I had no insurance to cover it. Praise God. This friend had all of their amalgams out a few months prior and noticed the benefits therefore offered to pay for mine too. The mercury in them causes a lot of issues in our body. (PS I’m a former dental assistant. )
One thing we have both noticed since getting them out though is that our body hurts a lot. Mentally we are much better in multiple ways but our body hurts. From what I understand is that it is part of the detox process. We are trying to detox heavy metals, and mold currently. It is a process. It can take a year or so depending on how consistent and how well each protocol works for each individual.

A few months later my insurance offered a monthly discount if I got a physical with blood work that tested vitamin levels that none of my doctors had ever tested. Turned out I was vitamin d deficient and was anemic with b12 and iron deficiency. Idk what’s the deal with doctors, why they don’t check certain things.

    • @helenarichard
      @helenarichard 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

They do not check it because then they would have to tick off every check box on the blood test, and it costs a lot of money for the labs to test all this, and health insurance doesn't like that. You gotta be almost dying if you want to get proper tests. Most doctors only get to test a few things per visit, it sucks. I got a private endo and paid € 1000 for a full hormone and blood test and stool test. The result: adrenal crisis, iron deficiency, fungi, leaky gut etc...

Anxiety can have tons of physiological reasons. Once I started supplementing Selenium, Methylfolate (I seem to be in the group that reacts well to it), choline, NAC and a few other things... mostly things that have to do with methylation problems and the thyroid.... I suddenly was enthusiastic, happy and relaxed again. Just as I remember being as a kid before puberty. It is insane how big the difference can be, and how many indirect positive things happen because of that. I had real reasons to have anxiety because I was in a bad spot in my life, and some of them still remain - but now anxiety WHEN and IF it even occurs feels "normal" and not as if the world is trying to strangle me and I am a caged animal. It is soooo undervalued to improve nutrition and to look at deficiencies.

It's not the genetic mutation itself that causes anxiety, it's the nutrient deficiency regardless of why that deficiency occurs.
For example, I can give myself anxiety or panic just by taking B1 without taking any other B vitamins or a B complex because B1 by itself increases the need for the other B vitamins in the body.

B complexes are good bases for people that don't have problems with B deficiency or genetic problems.. and that may be your case, so yes take a separate B complex; however B complexes may not be formulated correctly, contain enough vitamin or even type of vitamin.. it is always good to get enough B vitamins no matter what, as you will get all sorts of unusual problems whether you take a high dose B1 or not..

Some of the most common causes are a thyroid dysfunction, low iron levels and other minerals/vitamins, hormone imbalances etc. The first thing to do is get a complete physical exam and then meet with a dietician to review your diet. Just that feeling. I knew that thought was not sane and that it was the meds and that it would pass but I had suicidal thoughts...it wasn't like I thought rationally I would like to kill myself or ah fugg git I may as well die the thoughts just popped in my head as a sort of like kill me now feeling. I never understood depression or anxiety at all whatsoever untill that happened me because I had literally never felt that ever. My anxiety is worry about the future. My depression is if I think negative thoughts so I thought other people were just doing that too much. It also made Me realise you cant just stop a feeling if it's not caused by a thought. Cos it seemed like from that perspective the thoughts were just rationalisation for how I felt. I didnt rationalise cos I knew rhe cause. But if I hadn't known it was the meds I might have thought why am I like this what happened in my childhood other stuff. Or made up a rationale. Anyway. Tmi. Lol I'll shush.

      Two things:
Back in the 1940s there was a doctor named Max Gerson who emigrated from Germany when Hitler was ramping up in the 30's and he was curing people of a number of different diseases including cancer just by dietary/nutritional means & lobbyist for pharmaceutical companies had Congress make it a law that you are not allowed to cure people with food or have hospitals that offer food/nutrition as a remedy. Dr Gerson had to get his hospital built in Mexico to cure people and he was poisoned and almost died the FIRST time and ALL of his data and records he had was stolen (he was writing a book and his manuscript was stolen too) and he was poisoned a second time and it killed him. #2, Dr's are not taught anything about nutrition at all in med school - they get just one class on nutrition and that's if they're lucky.
Just look at type 2 diabetes - rock solid nutrition and exercise prevents and if not too advanced, cures it, but Dr's are in so deep with big pharma, patients just become a meal ticket & a $$$ sign, not a human being that is suffering and dying.

You’re not alone. I’ve been down the same road. I got early on set symptoms of MS mid 2021 and got my MRI the last of November same year. Came back perfectly fine to everyone’s surprise including mine. I later had to see a neurologist and the only odd thing she could find was slightly decreased reflexes in my right leg but nothing else.
I was pretty much completely healthy on paper so they just pet me on the back and sent me home.
The months went by and my symptoms got worse and worse. I woke up one day and my tongue was on fire. I went to check it out in the mirror and I had a small red spot on the right side. I didn’t think much of it at the time but the burning sensation drove me crazy. The spot grew larger and in just a few days it covered pretty much my entire side of the tongue. It was red and completely smooth.
I went to see the doctor and got diagnosed with glossitis. They told me it was a benign inflammation and the only thing I could do was hoping it would go away. I asked them what the underlying issue was and the answer I got was “no clue, it just happens sometimes and some people have to live with it for the rest of their lives”
I was obviously not satisfied with that answer so I began doing my own research. Turns out glossitis is a very common symptom of a B12 deficiency. Suddenly puzzle pieces started to fit.
I went to my closest pharmacy and bought a B12 supplement. After a few weeks without any progress I felt pretty defeated. I was so sure I had found the cause of my problem but I was not willing to give up just yet.
Months went by and I started thinking about how a deficient would be possible in the first place because I eat a lot of meat and should on paper get all the B12 I need. I narrowed it down to it being some sort of digestive issue.
I found out that low stomach acid can be a huge problem also a lack of something called Intrinsic Factor that can be lacking due to an autoimmune condition.
That gave me two options. Try sublingual B12 supplement or go back to the doctor, plead for them to take the correct blood tests to see if I had a B12 deficiency and later get B12 injections. I went for the sublingual option as a test. I also opted for the methylated form.
After only two days I woke up for the first time in months without a burning tongue. After about a week it was completely back to normal. I finally thought I had found the answer and I had in fact a B12 deficiency. It would explain every symptom I had experienced since mid 2021.
Confident I called my MD and got an appointment. I explained everything, she checked out my tongue and agreed to take a blood test. 3 days later she called me and said that my serum B12 was high and I said “so what? I’m taking a supplement so of course it’s going to be a bit high but that tells us nothing about me having a deficiency or not” I asked what tests she had taken and the only one was serum B12. Frustrated I thanked her for her time. That test however gave me valuable information. I now knew for certain that the sublingual supplements worked.
I’ve been taking them ever since and today I’m 95% back to normal. The last three years have been really tough with basically no help from the health care system. It’s a shame that all doctors today are educated on symptom management not symptom treatment and finding the root cause.
I really hope you find your answer. I just wanted to share my story to let you know you’re not alone.

@1:45 It's inferred that they are talking about fortifications and nutrients when they're looking at mental health that could be correlated with microbiome benefits. Commercial grains are grown and desiccated with Glyphosate. Glyphosate is a herbicide, anti fungal and known to kill microorganisms. A typical serial like Cherios has been reported to have more Glyphosate than many listed fortified minerals and vitamins. Glyphosate negatively affects your Gut bacteria. Gut bacteria are known to produce hundreds of neurochemicals that the brain uses to regulate basic physiological and mental processes such as learning, memory and mood. So, in conclusion, just going organic on grains probably has more to do with nurokemicals produced in the gut than fortifying vitamins that are related to brain health.

@@gunzrloaded No it doesnt. If you have MTHFR gene issue you can not convert folic acid into methylfolate. Folate is just a general term for any of the versions of B9. That is the whole point of getting tested for MTHFR to see if you can convert folic acid into methyl version. Some foods have methyl versions of vitamin already in them. If the yeast doesnt, then it is not helping you. If you felt better it was probably from one of the other B vitamins being low.

During a period of dealing with ED, my body lacked crucial vitamins like B vitamins, vitamin D, iron, and magnesium. This deficiency caused extreme panic attacks, strange finger contractions, and paralysis. It led to severe depression, paranoia, and anxiety, making it hard for me to leave the house for fear of experiencing an attack in public. Returning home and adopting a balanced diet made all these issues disappear. However, when I gained weight later and went on a diet again, the symptoms resurfaced, confirming for me that my diet directly impacted my well being. Now, with proper nutrition and vitamin intake, I've been free from panic attacks. I once attributed my panic attacks to my IBS, believing it was my stomach issues triggering the anxiety. My boyfriend insisted that anxiety causes IBS, but deep down, I felt it was related to either my diet or digestion. Eventually, I discovered it was indeed linked to my vitamin deficiency, a direct result of my restrictive diet. This video confirms it, I need to take better care of myself

This might explain why my anxiety came back after 5 years. I wasn’t eating folic acid but recently my country made it compulsory for folic acid to be in non organic bread.

Baking bread is not as hard as you might think, also waaaay cheaper than buying it.

Nutrition is king. I completely got rid of my psoriasis and massively calmed down my multiple food allergies and sensitivities with nutritional therapy. Of course, since I live in the UK I had to do this alone. The NHS isn't fit for purpose and misdiagnosed me over a period of 15 years before I ended that relationship with state/corporate run healthcare. Best thing I did was to watch videos like yours as well as others as well as look at countless studies, attempting to learn the seemingly unlearnable (at the time). So glad I escaped the worse fate of perpetual symptom-control meds.

Urgh, same here! Helping myself nutritionally has honestly been a life saver, but being able to navigate health concerns of my children has been the real blessing. I would only use the NHS for incidents of trauma

I was so depressed, I didn't care about anything anymore. Turns out I was low in Ferritin, D3, B12, zinc and Magnesium. The scarry part was, I needed to find that out by myself and then ask my doctor to test and treat it. Now I got my self worth back

A few things to consider. Being the founders of Orthomolecular (Nutrition Based) Medicine, we were one of the first medical groups to test for MTHFR. The MTHFR mutation is common and many of the healthiest people we have seen in our clinic are Homozygous MTHFR mutated. Make no mistake, even those with the MTHFR mutation make Methyl Folate. First and foremost Methyl Folate’s primary role is to restore Methionine. Both Methyl Folate and Methionine are available through the diet. Understanding Methylation is to understand balance. When you are methylating properly and producing SAMe, MTHFR is turned off. Lastly it should be noted that MTHFR does not interact with Folic Acid. Folic acid goes through DHFR and becomes DHF, a natural folate. DHF then is processed to become THF. When Methyl Folate gives up its methyl group to Hydroxy B12 to form Methyl B12, Methyl Folate becomes THF. Ultimately if you are going to take your methylation seriously knowing your mutations is not adequate. It is essential to test the major byproducts including Homocysteine, Glutathione, SAM, SAH, Methionine, Sarcosine, MMA, Creatinine, CoQ10, Carnitine, Cysteine, Taurine, Sulfate, and vitamins B2, B3, B6, B12, Biopterin along with a Folate analysis including Folate (serum and red blood cell) Folic Acid, Methyl Folate, 5 Formyl Folate, 10 Formyl Folate,
and minerals Zinc, Manganese, Selenium, Magnesium, and Copper. Copper deficiency alone can lower methylation by as much as 20%, where copper excess can block SAHH enzyme and thus block the re-methylation cycle, that is it’s blocking the remethylation of homocysteine to methionine. This is just a brief sample of what we would routinely test in our Orthomolecular Medical clinic. This data will give you insights as to how your body is adapting to your personal biochemical situation.
