Dear lord, imagine running a 14:44 and you're only fifth on your team! This is utter madness! I ran XC in HS in Michigan ('98-'01) when Dathan Ritzenhein ran for Rockford and we all looked at him as a demigod because he consistently ran 14:30 or lower. To imagine Ritz as 3rd 4th or 5th on a team is something I'm having trouble comprehending.

I strongly disagree with anyone who is saying 16:30. At a meet last year where they all ran the mile their times added up to 16:30 and they’ve clearly proven they’re in better shape. Sub-16 is very unlikely unless it’s an absolute perfect day for everyone, but I can realistically see a 16:10

16:28.....maybe if they all have a good day. Lapping the other teams will slow them down considerably. Running in lane 2 or 3 to pass slower teams will add significantly to their total distance. Keep in mind that they may have to do this on probably 40 to 45 curves of the 64 curves of an indoor 4 mile race. Also, individual times don't always translate to relay times. Carrying the baton in a distance relay does make a small difference in performance. I think that a lot depends on the number of teams in the race. They will certainly lap some teams more than once.

One thing that makes this harder to accomplish is that they won't be running in a group after the first leg, so the weaker runners won't necessarily be able to be brought along by the faster runners in the pack if there is already seperation from the leaders when they get their leg started. It'll be 16:05-16:15 based on the fact that their previous mile times would suggest around 16:20 and leo and lex are clearly in better shape than their last mile almost 8 months ago. However, looking at the splits from their workout on the L&L channel, if they all are to have a perfect race with sublime pacing and no traffic to weave around, sub 16:00 is a miniscule possibility.

Great stuff, as usually, brother. Keep 'em rolling... Colin Sahlman, Newberry's best runner, ran just under 3:59 and was pushed to the very end in a highly competitive race against other elite runners. That won't be the case here. Aaron ran 4:05, pretty much running alone, but that was outdoors; Leo ran, I think 4:06, and Lex ran 4:08 high. Not to say that these are their ceilings, but if you add these up, it works out to around 16:18. Since they won't be pushed and will have to avoid slower runners on a smaller banked track, they'll probably each do around 2 to 3 seconds above these previous times, which means a collective time between 16:24 and 16:30.

Their splits were: 1:59, 58, 59, 1:58, 59, 59. Like TRP said, I’m not too optimistic about the 16:00 barrier being broken (considering that all four will need to feel great and have perfect pacing), but I definitely think the 16:20 barrier will broken and possibly 16:10 as well. 16:15 to 16:20 seems doable but passing other runners might slow them a bit. On the plus side they may run fast in those later legs while 'chasing' to lap slower runners. They seem to run intervals at target pace leading up to big races so should have 'muscle and mental' memory of what 61 second quarters feel like. Over 30 years of coaching I've had a handful of runners approaching those marks but to have them all on the same team at the same time is amazing. Best of luck to them this weekend.

    No. Not a chance.
First off, Ireland's team had 4 runners who'd run sub 3:52, and two (Flynn and Coghlan) who'd gone sub 3:50. Newbury has one runner under 4:00. If you added up Ireland's PB they're 15:24; they ran 15:49. Add up Newbury's best in HS only races, and it is 16:30 (take Colin Sahlman's indoor record against pros, and it's still only 16:23.
There's a huge difference between running a 4:00 mile (which only one of these runners has ever done) with competition to pace you/push you, and running a 4:00 mile solo...which is what Newbury's last three runners will have to do.
Do I think they'll beat the existing 4 x 1 mile HS record of 16:47.11? Sure. But that's it. They won't approach 16:00, and I don't think they go sub 16:30. My prediction is 16:38.44.

Make no mistake about it, Newbury Park has the horses to get close. I would certainly love to see it happen but you are correct in that the race would have to be executed to perfection with three of them running their mile legs in at least 4:01 with Colin Sahlman needing to run 3:57 to claim the record. Even for this fantastic group of athletes, this is an extremely tall order. It certainly would be epic and I will certainly be cheering for them. My prediction is they will be right around 16:05 if they all run a perfect race. I would be very happy if they prove me wrong though. This has been one very historic year for high school cross country with certainly more to come with the outdoor track season fast approaching.

What about the Lompoc team of 1972?
The 1972 Fall Cross-Country season on the course and actually around the track is where Lompoc would make their mark as perhaps the best team ever in California and one of the best in National history. The group marched from Invitational to Invitational in 1972 stomping the competition in amazing manner. Meets such as the Palos Verdes Invitational, where runners on the varsity race against their counterparts on other groups (#1's against each other, next race #2's against each other, etc.) Lompoc simply won every varsity race right down the line, with Roger Fabing, who won the JV run for the Braves recording the #4 overall time for the day. On top, Terry Williams took down St. Bernard star Chris Hoffmans CR of 10:59 with a 10:43 clocking on the very challenging Palos Verdes hills, with the team winning a team time battle by over three minutes! At the by-grade Dos Pueblos Invitational Lompoc was 1-2-4-6 at the Senior level, and 1-2-4 on the Junior level, quite a scoring seven! At the Mt. SAC Invitational in the Sweeps race, the squad sat in the rear for most of the first mile before exploding to six of the top eleven places in a dominating win behind Terry Williams 9:52.3 victory.
