We have to remember that Colin has 3 teammates breathing down his neck right behind him, pushing him to these times. Everyone else on that list won most of their races by margins
He can't help if he runs for Newbury Park, and even his brother is good enough to breathe down his neck. Besides, he usually goes to the front and holds it.
@@chadtaylor1788 nah I think its a good point to make, solo running is just tougher to get better times, so colin definitely benefitted from having the other 2 best highschool runners of all time
Love the fact that this guy begins by highlighting the essence of a rare and unique level of talent... a chanel that brings you about 100 unique talents per month
It's extremely annoying but I can hardly blame the guy, he's playing the algorithm like most cookie cutter semi successful channels. Only truly exceptional channels make it without playing the numbers.
His former teammate Nico Young might've been on that list if Covid-19 hadn't destroyed the 2020 outdoor season. Nico was jammin as a senior, having broken the NXN course record, and then the 3,000 indoor national record. Fast. Edit: Colin's 1500 split from that indoor mile was 3.44, which is fastest in the nation this year. He could prolly go sub 3.40 outdoors.
bro Corona is the sole reason we have all those records and new Prs talents etc.there was no testing for a huge chunk of 2020 Think about it. Jacobs 10.00 to 9.80 in 1 year 🤣
Yessss she SMASHED that world record in indoor worlds!!! I was thinking about this chanel and how I'd love to have the statistics explained by this gentleman!
Impossible to touch Ryan’s accomplishments, however Colin’s versatility is crazy. His most impressive run to date is ‘21 cross nationals, entire NP team rewrote the record book. But his 800 and mile speed is also undeniable. I think Colin has the potential to smash 3k and 5k records at NAU. Will be amazing to see him reunite with Nico
There's no doubt the 2021 XC National Course is short. All of the runners ran between 20-30 second PR's on that course. Let's see how close Colin gets to Rupp's National 5K High School record of 13:37.
Alan Webb smashed Ryun's H.S. record for the mile by almost 2 seconds, when he ran a 3:53.6 almost 21 years ago. Ryun's best 800m in H.S. was 1:49.2 and Webb ran a 1:47.7/800m and Ryun's best 2 mile time was 9:04 in H.S. and Alan Webb ran an 8:45 2 mile time in H.S. And Hobbs Kessler smashed Jim Ryun's 1500m time of 3:39, last year, when he ran a 3:34.6 1500m time. That is equivalent to a 3:52 mile time.
@@richardmilliken8705 Modern athletes benefit from many things including Webb 20 years ago. If Ryun was running today with all of those benefits there’s a pretty good chance he could win against these guys.
@@daltonpulsipher I think you're right. Everything has improved significantly since 1965, when Ryun set the H.S. Mile Record of 3:55. And it is nice to see that he is still considered the GOAT H.S. Athlete. th-cam.com/video/8AgSJE9DUxQ/w-d-xo.html
Another AMAZING video, man! Colin Sahlman easily cracks the Top 10 U.S. High School All-Time, and should probably be ranked in the Top 4, but not #1. If Sahlman would have qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team in Tokyo as an 11th Grader last season, the way Jim Ryun made the Olympic team as an 11th Grader back in 1964 (coincidentally, also in Tokyo), it would be a tougher decision to make.
Indeed! Jim Ryun would've run sub 3:50 with the incredible tracks and running shoes they have now. Ryun also would've run 1:45 in the 800 meters. And with coach Brosnan, he would've run 8:20 for the 2mile.
I think a Solid Number 3 placement may be apt now in advance of the 2022 outdoor Session, but one things for sure, this guy is- longterm- really Special. Great Video & Research once again, love your Channel ( although I was only a sprinter & jumper in my day 🤗)
Ngl I don’t get the hype over American HS athletes. Im in my second last year of English secondary school (equatable to High school) I run a 3:50 1500m so I have a year to take off around 6 seconds to get my sub 4min mile before I leave what would he HS in America I train with a guy who won National 800m who does 1:50 And has a 3:44 1500 so is sub 4 in essence. And yet I’m only around top 25 in the U.K., is the US just much weaker per person at middle distance Or am I suffering from bias as I’m surrounded by incredibly fast people?
It’s not impossible to compare the two! Ryan is a far superior athlete! I would estimate if Ryan was running on the tracks today it worth at least a second a lap and if had the lighter spikes and better nutrition who knows.
Ryun (let’s spell his name correctly!) was not just the best high school runner ever, he’s the best high school ANYTHING ever. He ran multiple sub four minute miles while in high school including in a state meet, on a cinder track, obviously running by himself. He ran under four minutes as a junior in high school. He made the freaking Olympic team when he was 17!! He was a household name in the United States as a teenage runner, which is simply unheard of.
@@jefffawcett I couldn't agree more. Also, as a high schooler in 1965, Ryun ran 3:55.3, within 1.7 seconds of the world record. No other high school miler has come anywhere near the world record. By comparison, Alan Webb ran 3:53.43. Faster than Ryun, but 10.3 seconds slower than the world record of 3:43.13 at the time. A great effort, but not even close to Ryun's achievement.
@@rodjohnson2632 El G's World Record for the Mile was done with the help of EPO, HGH, and Testosterone and that's why 25 years later it still has not been broken. There's no doubt that Hobbs Kessler's National High School Record of 3:34 for the 1,500 meters, which is almost 5 seconds faster than Jim Ryun's High School best of 3:39 is a superior time, even when you figure the running shoes, faster tracks, nutrition and training. Kessler smashed Webb's 1500 meter H.S. time of 3:38 by 4 seconds. Hobbs also hold the H.S Record for the Indoor Mile with a 3:57. Hobb's 1500 meter time last year in HS was faster than the NCAA Outdoor 1500 meter record. Hobbs was also ran a 8:39/ 2 mile time as well as an 1:47 / 800 meter relay leg in H.S.
It should be noted that Colin did lose to Cade Flatt at new balance nationals indoor. To be fair I’m pretty confident that was Flatt’s first race and was fresh while Colin had run the 4xmile the night before.
Setting the American record in the mile, missing the world record by less than two seconds, AND beating the Olympic champion in the process makes Jim Ryun the GOAT high school distance runner of all time. No one else is even close.
Agreed. Ryun would've made the 1964 Olympic final (1500) had he not contracted a flu bug. He was 17!! The fact that he qualified for the US Olympic team against the best milers in America is just mind boggling. Then the following yr as HS Sr. He was ranked in the world top 5.
Dathan graduated from Rockford High School. I went there and got a track scholarship due to our school being one of the most known D1 high schools in MI. Good to see him getting mentioned and seeing his extremely old R uniforms. He’s still well-known in the area. The one year I ran CC (2013ish), I got to meet him on my birthday. Great man and doesn’t act like he’s “well-known”. Incredible athletes you cover. Keep it up!
As a runner from Michigan as well Dathan’s accomplishments are beyond legendary. In another video it’s mentioned that no one’s gotten closer than 37 seconds I think to the national record he set on the same MIS speedway course. And of course he ran away in winning the Foot Locker “national championships” from the likes of Alan Webb and Ryan Hall.
I usually watch your videos with my 2 year old daughter because she LOVES running and to run fast but I fucks with your channel because you NEVER talk shit about how runners suck or they are overrated or overhyped, it's all love from you to everyone in the sport. One of the only sports channels on youtube where that happens.
German Fernandez is a robot. He went to. School with my niece. I watched him blow away everyone in 800 , 1600 and 3200. At state he lapped everyone in the race. He was a beast!
He and the whole Newbury Park HS team have been pulverizing HS distance running for the last 2 years. Twins Lex and Leo Young from the same team are nearly as good as Colin, and Colin's younger brother nearly beat him in the 880, running in the high 1:40's, and is probably only 4 or 5 seconds back in the mile. That whole team is scary fast.
If we think Colin is gonna be one of the greatest then you gotta wait for Lex and Leo Young. They’re running times pretty close to them and they’re still a year younger, hell, Lex is probably gonna break 4 this outdoor. and they just turned 17 like a month ago
And Ryun & Pre with today's training, running shoes and super-fast-tracks, would've run much faster than today's H.S. runners. Jim Ryun would've run 3:48 mile, 1:45/800m and 8:25/2 mile. Pre would've run an 8:18/2 mile & 13:20/ 5K and Lindgren would've run an 8:15/ 2mile & a 13:15/5K & a 27:55/10K in H.S. Only Hobbs Kessler & Alan Webb would've been competitive against Jim Ryun in the mile in H.S.
Yeah, I personally think Colin is a solid 4 on that list, since he is so versatile. I also think Nico could've been on the list if he hadn't lost a year to Covid.
Hey Andrew, when are you doing to a video on the teenager Nicholas Griggs from Ireland who has very recently broken the European Under-20 indoor mile record, clocking a magnificent 3:56.40, less than three months after turning 17!
Hi @@richardmilliken8705 bit of a silly comment as I'm not saying he is is best of all time. Plus you are not comparing like for like, if we were then Hobbs Kessler's best indoor mile time is 3.57.10 which he did aged 18y 10m vs Nicholas Griggs 3.56.40 ages 17y 3m. Hi@@richardmilliken8705 at 16 this guy Nick Griggs was beating the best runners in Europe in the u20 championship who were all about 3 years older than him and running a final lap in 55 seconds. Agreed he should have his own video and when you say that you would give him "the edge" over Colin there is no argument at all. When Colin was aged 17 he was running 3,000m in 8m 34.68s and 5km in 14m 27s Nick at the same same was doing 3,000m in 7m 57s and 5k in 14m 15s so he is way ahead if we are comparing like for like and all of Nick's PBs today even are better than Colin's who is 14 months older. @@aidanorourke1632 Colin ran the 3K in 7:56.97, and the 3200m in 8:43 at 17 years of age and he won & ran the National High School XC 5K Championships in 14:03. The indoor mile is the only distance that Griggs has run faster than Colin. Grigg's 14:15.98 in the 5K on a track is nothing to write home about. I don't see Griggs coming close to Rupp's National H.S. 5K record of 13:37. Only time will tell, what kind of improvements both of these runners can. Jakob and the East Africans have produced much faster times on the track than any American or Ireland H.S. Athletes. I believe that Kipchoge ran the 5K in 12:50 at the age of 18.
Idk why youtube recomended this channel to me, BUT i watch every video.. I suddenly love T&F. Well, I like numbers and comparing numbers and records and stuff.. I hope to be alive when the regular 2h-Marathon will be achieved.
I personally think Dathan is the best HS cross country runner ever. Because he ran his 14:10 at MIS, a much slower course, and also because he was a much faster 5K runner than any of his peers, oppose to Colin who was challenged by a few other people in the Nation. That being said he, is much better in track comparatively, I think, as an overall Track runner he is top 5 right with Hobbs except he favors more in the 2 and Hobbs in the shorter events
If Sahlman had an unbelievable Sr. Track campaign I can see him moving up to 4 or 5 HS alltime. Maybe 3? Ryun & Lingren are almost impossible to surpass. They were so unbelievably talented at age 17-18 I just can't see them not be 1& 2 respectively. GOATS for sure.
Fortunately for Eric Holt, he’s already done sub 4 indoors and outdoors before. Also I am excited for the next generation of college athletes, who may bring us a sub 3:50 indoor mile before turning pro.
Did u see Dalia Frías 4:35 first race of the season? That was insane also CA state record. You should make a vid on that I think she will break the national record soon.
Better update your stats...Gary Martin, Archbishop Wood High School 3:57.98 in the 1 Mile!!! Now there's 14 high schoolers all time sub 4 minutes. And he's the first in PA!

See the comment below about Colin having teammates so close. Ryun had none...and no rabbits....and dirt track.... and old shoes.... normal high school coach (not mega coaches of today).
Inasmuch as I admire the legendary Steve Prefontaine, there is no question that Sahlman’s resume dwarfs that of Prefontaine. Sahlman’s pace in the 3200 beats Prefontaine’s pace for his 2 mile record. Prefontaine did run a 13:52 in the 5k on the track, which is astounding, but Sahlman’s 14:03 5k national record in XC is clearly a better mark. (That said, Prefontaine, as a high schooler Prefontaine had essentially no competition, no elite coaching, no elite training staff, and ran on cinder tracks in rural Oregon in the 1960’s… but we’re not talking about how great Prefontaine could have been if he were in high school today, we’re talking about his actual achievements as much as they could be compared). I can’t wait to see what Sahlman and his Newbury Park teammates do this outdoor season.
Why are you comparing a kid who ran in the 60s to a kid who is running today. Why don't you compare Sahlman to international teenagers? Is it because he won't measure up?

I'd say that based on his current times, dominance against his peers and fairly favorable comparison against other greats, he's easily top 5 with a strong case for top 3. If he continues his strong form, I think he's capable of being #1 but we'll see where his times go.

The Newberry Phenomenon is these great runners all come from two families which obviously have some pretty fantastic genetics. The moms and dads must have been great athletes. It is no difference the Mondo Duplantis, the world record holder in the pole vault. His dad was a world class pole vaulter and his mom was a world class Heptathlete.
If you took Ryan and put him with today's runners....HE WOULD ABSOLUTELY destroy the competition. With today's training and technology Colin would always be in his rear view mirror. That comparison isn't even close.... Ryan would destroy Colin all week and twice on Saturday invitationals. Ryan by far is the biggest freak out of high-school to walk these United States.
Griggs is quite a bit younger than Colin. He's closer in age to the Young bros. Griggs is tracking Ingebrigtsen...The concern is will he get the correct training he needs...His training when he was 16 was "I think I'll go for a run today and smash out a sub 15 5k"...You'd swear they found the kid in the Rift Valley.
It was a smashing race for sure, the Olympian also turned into his path in the final meters to stave him off. If you watch the video he clearly “phones it in” after that, and I think he could’ve approached 3:55 if that hadn’t happened

Sahlman may well be better, but you can't just automatically ignore Harrison.
TRP - nit pick #1: Eric Holt did not "miss going under 4 minutes by 1/1,000 th of a second". He missed *going* *under* by *2* thousandths. Nit pick #2: because USATF and World Athletics still do not recognize XC certified courses, and because a variety of methods are used to measure XC 5Ks, there is little consistency in "5K" XC courses. This throws some shade on XC records at any particular distance. There is at least one XC 5K that has been measured with a steel tape, which would definitely be accurate IF proper measuring protocols were strictly adhered to. Then, "of course", elevation profiles vary hugely between courses. It is interesting but not necessarily valid that any 5K XC performance can be compared to another on a different course. Thanks for the great video.
He could go as high as 3rd on this list if he runs 8:24 at Arcadia on April 9 and 3:54 at Pre on May 28. Jim Ryun and Gerry Lindgren beat major international adults. To crack the top two, Colin would have to win Pre in 3:52 or better.
It will be interesting to see what his future as a world class athlete holds. There have been so many high school wonders that under perform after that. I ran against the likes of Rudy Chapa and Carey Pinkowski back in the late 70's. Both top rated high schoolers and teammates at that time. Not that they didn't perform extremely well at University of Oregon and Villanova they never really made it to the world class level. For Chapa is was an injury that ended his career. I was at UofO when he attempted his failed comeback. It was sad to witness. Salazar was there and Pinkowski showed up as well. Last I heard Pinky was the Director of the Chicago Marathon.
Now that Colin is at NAU we can see that he still needs some serious development. On NAU which just accomplished the NCAA championship Colin was 6th or 7th man on the team. He is still a freshman and has only been through the cross country season. I am looking forward to what will happen next year after Lex and Leo arrive at Stanford and Aaron is added to NAU.

It's possible that another H.S Runner will come along in the next 5 years & break Kessler's H.S. 1500m record. I would think that Sahlman will be invited to multiple professional track meets where he will get a chance to break the mile, 2 mile, and 5K records. That's a good question- Sahlman-#5-#8 now on the All-Time list... if he continues to have a great outdoor track season, then he might be a #3-#5... by the end of May after we see what he can accomplish. It seems so hard to compare though and how do you do it anyway? The hs runners of the 1960s and 1970s... running and training on cinder or paved tracks (much of the time)... although him running a 14:03 5k on a cross-country course...!!!!!!!
The Michigan HS XC State Champion ran a 14:10 time on that Alabama XC course and his 14:49 time on the Michigan State XC Course was 39 seconds slower than Ritz"s XC Course record of 14:10. I suspect that Sahlman's 14:03 woud be 14:35 on the Michigan XC course. Ritxz is still the HS King of American XC.
Wow! These guys are truly amazing, and the fact that Sahlman has several teammates very close to him in their performance tells me they must have some fantastic coaching, and so there's one big Q: What are their training methods?
I went to school in the same district and we had similar training plans, mostly just consistency really and icing and doing everything possible to eat well and maintain that perfect shape from the start to end of the season
@@Anthonylollz For sure we can say that Colin has extraordinary talent, genetics, if he indeed follows the same training and diet plans as his team-mates, but the fact that those team-mates aren't that far off from him in performance still suggests that their training is a big factor...Sure would like to have more details on that.
I hate to mention it but PED's come to mind whenever I see something like this. Comment on both Jim Ryan and Alan Web. First the positives: Both Jim Ryan and Alan Web had phenomenal talent and thrived in a controlled environment. Now the negative: neither were mentally strong, Jim Ryan did not live up to expectations given his early success and Alan Web crashed and burned. So ability matters but you also need fortitude and determination. I would still put Jim Ryan in first place because he was so much better than his peers, while Colin has the benefit of being challenged daily by his brother and team mates. One last point, Jim Ryan did not run in an environment with the Diamond League, high preforming post college running clubs, and the general ability to live well if you are a top runner. Maybe that would have saved him.
This school sounds a lot like the Joe Newton York HS dynasty in Illinois. I have not followed it for years, but as I recall most all of their stand out runners were burned out by the time they got to college.
Newbury park has proven to be the goats. Not by having just one goat but the whole team loaded with goat talent. Colin graduated but his brother and the twins have not. Factor in a short season and you could argue how talented Nico really was then and now. My point is the athletes have to run the courses but it takes the right culture and hats off to brosnen for creating the vision and having the tools for these kids to develop so well. No doubt in my mind that this was the kids buying into great coach. His wife is still there and will see how it goes after this next group graduates.
I think he clearly needs to be in front of Alan Webb and Dathan Ritzenhein. It's ashame to knock Galen Rupp off the list however I think it's important to compare apples to apples. I don't think it's fair to compare Colin Sahlman's time to Alan Webb's time when he ran with professionals to get his 3:53. Not taking anything away from Alan Webb, he's an amazing runner but clearly when you are racing with professionals that are ramping up the pace, your time is going to be better. The same with Lukas Verzbicas. He ran his 8:29 2-mile with professionals. Not the same as German Fernandez running it with other high schoolers who weren't pushing him and he was all by himself. I think when the powers that be consider records, they need to consider high schoolers with other high schoolers. Again, not taking anything away from any of these great runners.
Ryun was from my era. I was not even close to any of them. Considering the advances in equipment, training, nutrition, surfaces, etc. Ryun might still be at the top. Always interesting to compare different eras or generations. Debate will continue I'm sure.
It really depends what we’re taking into account in terms of measuring greatness. One could argue that Pre was the greatest just based off notoriety alone. I think the “greatest” thing about Sahlman is his range. I can’t think of any other highschooler, ever, that has such amazing prs from 800-5000. But…that’s not the only thing that makes someone the “greatest”. My list takes PRs, running era, impact on the sport, wins/losses and shear dominance. 1.) Ryun 2.) Lindgren 3.) Webb 4.) Ritz/Sahlman (tie) 6.) German/Verzbikas (tie) 8.) Prefontaine 9.) Virgin 10.) Hunter With the level of talent in this years junior class, I’m almost certain that Hunter will probably fall off this list.

@@richardmilliken8705 I wasn’t aware of that but regardless he is very consistent and with blazing times like that I could definitely see the Olympics in his future assuming he continues to progress and doesn’t suffer a serious injury. Grant fisher who I actually got the privilege to run against in high school was similarly consistent and running slower times and he qualified for two events
Arguably he should be in the Top 10. But factoring in that he has teammates pushing him all the time which most athletes never have and certainly the people in the top 10 list. Then factor in the new super shoes that have been supplying the world with so many faster times they should be outlawed. And of course the advances in technology with track surfaces and such and maybe he cracks the top 12 realistically compared to that group. Btw I was an editor for the first NXN for Nike and was a historian for years.
We have to remember that Colin has 3 teammates breathing down his neck right behind him, pushing him to these times. Everyone else on that list won most of their races by margins
Doesn’t matter how you get there if you get there you got there man don’t break down the hard work that they all still put in

His former teammate Nico Young might've been on that list if Covid-19 hadn't destroyed the 2020 outdoor season. Nico was jammin as a senior, having broken the NXN course record, and then the 3,000 indoor national record. Fast.

Impossible to touch Ryan’s accomplishments, however Colin’s versatility is crazy. His most impressive run to date is ‘21 cross nationals, entire NP team rewrote the record book.

I don’t think he comes to his level, Jim Ryun ran in the 60s with a faster time. I don’t think any high schools comes to him Ryun
Indeed! Jim Ryun would've run sub 3:50 with the incredible tracks and running shoes they have now. Ryun also would've run 1:45 in the 800 meters. And with coach Brosnan, he would've run 8:20 for the 2mile.
I’d probably put Sahlman around 5th

Or am I suffering from bias as I’m surrounded by incredibly fast people?
It’s not impossible to compare the two! Ryan is a far superior athlete! I would estimate if Ryan was running on the tracks today it worth at least a second a lap and if had the lighter spikes and better nutrition who knows.
In my mind Ryun (not Ryan) will always be #1.
If you look outside the US, Jakob Ingebrigsten is likely the all-time #1 IMO.

Dathan graduated from Rockford High School. I went there and got a track scholarship due to our school being one of the most known D1 high schools in MI.

I’ve never heard of this kid before these videos. Hopefully he continues to dominate the competition on the world stage.
Just amazing how fast high school runners are today. I ran in the 70s, when Ryun and Prefontaine were the legends.
And Ryun & Pre with today's training, running shoes and super-fast-tracks, would've run much faster than today's H.S. runners. Jim Ryun would've run 3:48 mile, 1:45/800m
and 8:25/2 mile.

Rudy Chapa's National H.S. Record for the 10K is 28:32. And Mike Granville's National H.S. Record for the 800M is 1:46.
I ran the 200 once in high school just to grab the points when nobody else was lining up. I almost threw up at the end. These runners are amazing.
Not to mention great year round weather and you have the San Monica mountains right there for your hill work.
Wow. Great video!
Would be great to see a video about the best prep-aged performances globally! Amos’ 1:41.73 and some of Jakob’s performances come to mind.
Erriyon Knighton.
Sydney McLaughlin
Hobbs Kessler
Mondo Duplantis
All yes
He's got a long way to go. There have been many great potentials. We shall see...
Nick Griggs age 17 running 3:56 would likely demolish him given how fast his kick is (literally went toe to toe with an Olympic semi finalist)
And yes he is in the equivalent of high school over here so he would be able to beat him on paper
His training now is very smart, there keeping his mileage no higher than 55mpw and making sure he doesn’t get burnt out from high mileage. Can’t wait to see him in outdoor now that it’s starting up
@@christopherhamill525 Yes. I hope he continues to get the right training. The kid is an absolute beast.
The running stick! He has no body! Amazing!
Rheinhardt Harrison ran an indoor 1,000m in 2:22 in January of this year, which works out to around 57 seconds per 400m, and then ran his first mile race in February 2022 at 4:01.15. I don't know why Harrison wouldn't be somewhere in this discussion. Anyway, A race between Sahlman and Harrison would be one for the ages. Hopefully it'll happen this year.
@@davidp5492 Based on what? I gave you FACTS, and you responded with literally none in return. Want more? Harrison did a workout of 3 x 1 mile repeats at 4:18, 4:14, and 4:07, followed by 3 x 400m at 54 for all three... This was not meant as a slight on Sahlman. Sahlman may well be better, but you can't just automatically ignore Harrison.
Only in the US are they still running in miles and 1600m 3200m? the rest of world went metric 50 years ago.
Okay, I'll get on this hype train. Let's ride!
Depends on the distance, but he's definitely "in the running." (I'll see myself out.)
The only thing I could think of when he beat is younger brother in the 800 was how many times since they were little they. Raced each other
Now that Colin is at NAU we can see that he still needs some serious development. On NAU which just accomplished the NCAA championship Colin was 6th or 7th man on the team. He is still a freshman and has only been through the cross country season. I am looking forward to what will happen next year after Lex and Leo arrive at Stanford and Aaron is added to NAU.
please look into Carly Wilkes from Virginia. she just committed to a D1 running college and in any event over the 800 she has dominated since freshman year. recently attended the new balance track meet and ran a 16:48 in the 5k. it would be really cool for you to look into it
I met this guy last week, cool dude!
Great video. He evidently has the talent, now we need to see if he has the temperament to sustain it. I hope he doesn't prove to be a 'fizzler'! I've seen so many promising young athletes just fizzle out when they got the big time.
Webb was a beast in HS,and Colin is super close,so I believe right now he could be #2 simply bc Webb has the record...beat Webb's HS national record of 3:53 and Colin becomes the GOAT...
But what would Webb's 3:53 time have been in super spikes they are racing in now? Just can't ignore the new technology.
@@Thomas-fk3cw yep, totally with ya, I forgot about the new shoe technology, it's something that can't be overlooked,I just don't know how to quantify or calculate it into my opinion properly, but it's got to be making a difference, right?
@@DSMITH-cz7xi Hobbs Kessler's 1500m H.S. record of 3:34 converts to a 3:51 mile. And he ran the anchor leg of a 2 mile relay in 1:47 last spring in H.S.
@@kurtjohnson8714 I believe that there's only a 7 month age difference( both born in 2003) between Kessler & Sahlman. I didn't realize that Hobb's 1:47/800m was a relay leg time. The times are improving so quickly from better track & shoe technology, better coaching, training, & nutrition. It's possible that another H.S Runner will come along in the next 5 years & break Kessler's H.S. 1500m record. I would think that Sahlman will be invited to multiple professional track meets where he will get a chance to break the mile, 2 mile, and 5K records. We still have a long way to go to catch up with Kiplimo.
At 15, Kiplimo ran a 7:52/3K, 13:13/5K
At 20, Kiplimo ran a 26:33/10K, 57:37 Half Marathon. It will be interesting to see how the Newbury Park runners do or anyone else does in H.S. does this year.
If he proclaimed himself a woman, he'd be the fastest woman ever!
Anxiously waiting on the Yulimar Rojas' video
What about Drew Hunter - guy was a beast fro everything from the 800m (1:48) to sub 4 mi to absolutely dominating at footlocker nationals for XC
Yeah but they also had advantage of better water more organic food. Less smog.
Okay, so when one or even two individuals from the same team perform at this level over the course of many years I can easily accept that. But when I see year over year domination and multiple teammates performing at this level year after year it does beg the question.
@@kenhalal375 Yes, that thought does come to mind. I wonder how tight is the testing for that at high school level, and I'd guess there might not even be any. We'll see how these athletes do as time goes on if they continue to compete. Meanwhile, I'd still like to know more about their training too...Is it something unique that might explain their success?
Tough to be that Appleford fella, top of the team elite at any other school and at Newbury Park he’s the guy that sandbagged the team record
1. Gerry Lindgren
2. Jim Ryun
3. Dathan Ritzenhein
4. Lukas Verzbicas
5. Alan Webb
6. German Fernandez
7. Craig Virgin
8. Colin Sahlman
9. Drew Hunter
10. Jeff Nelson

BRUH WHERE IS NICK GRIGGS HE LITERALLY RAN A FASTER MILE THAN COLIN SALHMAN
Let's see if he can beat Hobbs Kessler's 1500m H.S. Record time of 3:34 or Rupps 5K HS Record at 13:37.
@@richardmilliken8705 I doubt it Hobbs Kessler 3:34 1500m is so impressive that he could potentially have run a 3:51 mile that race
Wish the UK was like this mind so much envy for USA track Athetics
The clock doesn't lie. He ranks where ever the clock puts him. If he gets better then he moves up to where his best time ranks him.
1- Jim Ryun
2- Gerry Lindgren
3- Alan Webb
4- Colin Sahlman
5- Steve Prefontaine
No
Newbury park has proven to be the goats.
I say 2. But we need to wait and see how he does in the track season.
so much for this thought. Abel just crushed him by 5.7 seconds.
1.) Ryun
2.) Lindgren
3.) Webb
4.) Ritz/Sahlman (tie)
6.) German/Verzbikas (tie)
8.) Prefontaine
9.) Virgin
10.) Hunter
With the level of talent in this years junior class, I’m almost certain that Hunter will probably fall off this list.
6:11 isn't 3200m already 2 miles
edit: it's not, it's around 3218m, thanks for the replies
Not quite. One mile is 1609.344 meters so 2 miles is about 3218.688 meters
3200 is actually just short of 2 miles. A full mile is 1609 meters, not 1600 meters, which would be exactly 4 laps of the track.
a mile is 1609 meters so you'd have to add an extra 18 metres for it to be a "full" two miles
@@TotalRunningProductions wow I didn't know that thanks! Great video as always
@@TotalRunningProductions crazy that I learn just now after being a runner for 10 years that a mile isn't exactly 4 laps... I am a sprinter though, and miles aren't very popular in France
Seems like he should be solidly in the top 5.
PLEASE: Put Gerry Lindgren at #1.
He is definitely a world class talent but I'm doubtful he is going to drop from 3:58 to 3:53. Maybe 3:56 or a 3:55 if he's really lucky
If he were a world class talent, he'd be running against world class athletes and not high schoolers...
@@noneofyourbusiness6100 I meant world class in that age group... and I think best high school runner in America qualifies as world class talent. He destroyed Ritzenheins 5k record and Ritzenhein is a retired olympian. I take it you know nothing about running.
@@RMor66 The XC Course where he broke Ritz's 5K H.S. XC Record is suspicious because everyone that ran on it had PR's roughly 30 seconds faster. I have a feeling that Ritz could've run 13:48 on that XC Course. Hobbs Kessler ran 40 seconds slower than Ritz's Michigan H.S State XC Record 14:10. Let's see how fast Sahlman runs the outdoor 5K in. Rupps H.S 5K record is 13:37.
