To clear up any confusion, the athlete who placed 6th in this race was running unattached and therefore did not score for any team. It's because of this that Newbury Park's placements (1,2,3,4,7(6)) > added to a total of 16 points. Here's the website with the overall results - www.rtspt.com/events/cif/xc2021/mp/#event1
No, he was attached. But his team only fielded two runners. Clovis didn’t qualify as a team, so they didn’t have a team score. Only their top two runners managed to qualify out of the CIF Central Section championship
I didn't know how XC meets are scored, but I kind of figured it out, but that 4th place had me wondering. Thanks for explaining. This team is phenomenal
This is just insane. When I ran my PR of 15:38 last week I just absolutely lost it and was filled with so much emotion and happiness so I can't even begin to imagine the sheer amount of emotions and pride these boys feel running those times, and getting 1 point shy of a perfect score. Track is definitely going to be very fun to watch with this team and I can't wait, more possibly sub-4 miles coming up..
That's fast. Don't ever let anyone else tell you differently. Most people couldn't keep up with what you consider a light jog for more than a minute or two, much less 5:00 pace for three plus miles.
Dude your commentary is just outstanding... I literally get shivers down my spine sometimes watching an insane clip and hearing ur commentary over it... keep it up
Just came back to report that the Newbury Park boys went 1,2,3 (Colin, Leo, Lex - I hope I got the Young bros order right) at the Garmin RunningLane XC National meet. Oh, and Colin set a new National XC 5k record time with 14:04, beating Dathan Ritzenheim's record of 14:10 from 2001. The Young's also broke the previous record, right behind Colin. Mind-blowing stuff 🤯. I'm hoping for a Total Running Productions video on this race 😇.
I want to add that Aaron Cantu was slated to be one of the top seven on the Newbury Park team this year but was injured early in the season and is just coming back. He ran 9:18 for 3200m last year as a sophomore. If their 6-9 guys keep developing, they should unbelievably be in the stratosphere again next year.
Nike Cross Nationals really dropped the ball by cancelling on a year with the GOAT team. Garmin will gain some serious notoriety. I still think NXN is bigger, but Garmin gains serious momentum with this.
Wild to think about how their track season is going to go… Though they had a small gap between No. 3 and 4, gotta emphasize that their No. 4 guy (Aaron Sahlman) was their No. 2 (13:42) at the Woodbridge Invite earlier this season (and has the least experience with the CA state meet course). So his fitness is probably closer to No.1-3 right now than the state meet results would suggest. Also, Colin and Lex already went 8:43 for 3200 at the Arcadia track meet last season-meaning they could legit have FOUR under 8:40. AND a couple more guys under 8:50 (Their sometimes No.5/sometimes No.6 guy Daniel Appleford also already went 8:56 at Arcadia). It’s wild to just consider that… A team’s sometimes-No. 6 guy is going INTO his track season already with an 8:56 from the previous year. He would’ve won most state meets as a JUNIOR. And without a miracle, he couldn’t even podium at his local league meet…
Imagine being Appleford, their "number 5/6 guy". This is a kid who is an absolute stud, but is overshadowed the two pairs of brothers. The fact that he stays at that school will only make him an even better runner.
Everyone who thinks it is supposed to be 17 points it is not because the 6th place runner ran without a team disqualifying him from getting points essentially skipping him
crazy that Nico set that record as a senior, and his brother who broke it is only a junior. Can only imagine what next year will look like at that meet
The fact that a high-school team averaged 14:41 for a 5k for their top 5 is unimaginable. That is better than the average of most collegiate top 5 on a team except your top NCAA division 1 teams!
What’s crazy about this video is that Newbury Park High School is a school in Thousand Oaks, CA. The same city where the 1993 Thousand Oaks High School team got the second best score ever. The schools run in the same league and are 3 miles apart. What on earth is in the water over there?
There is plenty of youtube. Lex and Leo even have a channel (called L&L) there are even some videos with the how coach sean trains them. his tips, schedule, and secrets.
Great to hear the kids are doing so well. I moved to Newberry Park in 1961 when I was six years old, it was a brand new housing track. Great place to grow up in the 60s.
As a twin I think it’s really cool that the young brothers are doing it. I can’t even get my brother to run one time with me that long as many times as it takes to run anything close to that.
I live in California just 5 hours away from Newbury Park and I gotta say that as a former XC runner, these guys blew my mind for almost getting a perfect score this is a new record. No other school here in California has done so great as these guys were and they're honestly the school I wish mine was. I went to North Salinas
I was a part of the 2015 Jenks High School team that averaged 15:42 to lead the country. The previous best team in OK history averaged 16:21. Our team was the best team to ever come through OK. Seeing that Newbury is doing the same thing but in California, a much better running state than Oklahoma, it is absolutely incredible.
They obviously have a special coach. Having one or two superstars can be attributed to talent, but when you have seven runners from one high school that are the very best in the state, the coach is doing something unique. It’ll be interesting to see if these boys continue to dominate under different coaches in college.
My question is whether these kids all grew up in the area or did they move there because of the success of the program? I'd be more impressed if they all just happened to be born in the school district.
Yes. Does anybody know? It would much more spectacular if these runners grew up around each other and went to their local school, then if they were an assembled group of the best runners in the state.
My team is in the same league as Newberry park and I’ve had the privilege to watch these people run a few times. It is beyond crazy. Like, I can’t comprehend watching people run this fast knowing how much pain they must be in. I’m realllly looking forward to watching them over the years.
Props to their coach for keeping these guys fit and ready! There is so much volatility when it comes to high school/prep racing and these guys always show up when it counts! Remarkable poise and composure at the big meets. The twin duo reminds me of the Torres Brothers back in the day.
The 3 Young brothers will have to be compared to the Ingebrigtsen set now, quite amazing. I've been an orienteer my entire life (i.e. real cross country running outside the paths, while navigating), but I've never been fast enough to keep up with these guys even for a short stretch. I ran a flat 5K once in high school, alone on a dirt track, and was happy with 17:45. :-)
The reason why Newbury Park has been this good is because the coach Sean Bronsan recruited those student athletes from nearby cities. My former high school coach told me about this. The Youngs came from Western Camarillo, the Sahlmans came from Eastern Camarillo, and Aaron Cantu actually came from Santa Clarita. These guys ran well in the 8th grade all ran sub 4:50 in the mile. This is rather unusual for high school because recruiting is actually against Supreme Court ruling and increases the emphasis on high school athletics being like collegiate or even professional sports leagues when in reality it should not be that way.
When you get to the elite level like this you’re guna have recruiting and things like this happening, it’s just how it goes. Lots of kids from camarillo go to newbury park naturally instead of camarillo hs. Furthermore the coaching and program at newbury is seemingly extremely good so why wouldn’t you want to go there. even if the youngs and sahlmans went to camarillo they would still be on the same team so its not a completely unnatural occurrence that was constructed through recruitment, rather they are just at one school over the other.
@@dobattlers Actually the Youngs would’ve attend Rio Mesa and the Sahlman’s Camarillo High. Look if recruiting is okay with you then how come its ruled against by the Supreme Court and other states like Michigan. The problem is that CIF does not enforce against recruiting unlike most other state associations.
@@dobattlers And also lets not forget that Aaron Cantu came from Santa Clarita and Hector Martinez came from Los Angeles. This is not pure coincidence.
@@dobattlers And also, what do you consider to be “elite level”? High school sports is not “elite level”. Collegiate and Professional sports is. High School is where kids go to prepare for college not sports institutions. If this is okay to you, then Jackie Robinson West Little League recruiting kids out of its area in Chicago is also okay as well. They are minors, not grown ass adults. Recruiting is definitely okay by college and professional standards but should not be under high school standards.
@@RunwayIsAwesome they are definitely elite at the high school level. They are the best in the nation individually, to me elite isn’t reserved for post high school. There’s plenty of other sports where the elite live a different life while teenagers. Gymnastics/Olympics, top prep basketball stars going to academies, club soccer and the academy/odp leagues, and I’m sure most other sports have elite leagues you are recruited to and play in if you are the best of the best as a teenager. Is this a problem because its happening at a school vs outside the school in a club league? There isn’t really a separate running league to play with and train with when you’re in high school like the other sports, so it has to happen at school. I couldn’t care less what the supreme court voted on, why would that impact my decision of what I think is ok. My personal opinion is that the best should be allowed to surround themselves with the best and train/compete with the best. That’s how we progress in anything in life, by putting the best with and against the best day in day out and that’s what they’ve done. Sure it ruffles some feathers, I’ve heard it too trust me, but hey that’s life. It’s hard to say that any coach/program in ventura county is better than newbury’s.
This is an amazing team so many ways. Take away Newbury Park's top four unbelievable runners and the next five would still challenge for state. Only two of the top nine are seniors.
A lot of people are asking about their training, but their training isn't much different from all the other high schools they are competing against. Its all about their natural talent and Newbury Parks recruiting. Newbury took the youngs and sahlmans from Camarillo SD and the others from other surrounding districts. They aren't the most legit team, but Great Oak and other GOATs recently have been doing that as well, even though the supreme court ruled against it. Its pretty unfair to those following the rules, but CIF cares more about people wearing spikes than a literal supreme court ruling.
Another scary thing about this performance is that their 6th runner placed 9th at this meet. Imagine being top 10 at one of toughest state meets in nation, and you don't even score for your team....
Not to take focus away from what these, or any other athletes have done; BUT with each new video upload, Total Running Productions also does an *outstanding job* presenting, and editing each event. *Well done.*
Humans are evolving. When I was a SR Adam Goucher was our state champion and the first ever to break 15 minutes and no one was even close to him breaking 15 minutes was unheard of then
German Fernandez was in a much weaker division though. Div. 4 I believe, it makes sense there were no runners even close to him. I was there to witness his race, I was coaching at the time, my runners and I ran around the course to watch him, it was amazing to watch!
They have an insane amount of runners on their team every year it’s almost always bound to get a stud. Have you ever heard of the york running scandal?
Jrad's Edits not sure what year this was, but 2 kids on the varsity team accidentally started a fire, and the jv kids took the blame so the varsity kids could keep running. It was big because it was like a juvy sentence too.
I am massively impressed by this astounding accomplishment. Well done, guys! 👏🏻👍🏻 A thousand years ago when I was in high school I was a pretty decent sprinter but not good at long distances. Our bonehead coach made us all run 3-6 miles loops with the little cross country runners though and it those runs nearly killed us. I remember my first day in track, the coach made me run a 6 mile loop and I made it 4 miles until I turned blue from exhaustion. The guys I was running with laughed at me and told me they were the top distance runners on the team. Cruel joke by our coach. He was always doing stuff like that. We did have some very elite sprinters on that team though who set some national records in the early 1970’s.
Whats the bet D1 colleges recruit the coach after Youngs graduate. NAU will also be unstoppable if they bag the whole team. Other colleges will go hard on this with a create your own destiny sales pitch to try lure the twins and break up the unstoppable force.
I want what they’re having. Must be some good ‘stuff’. No way a team is naturally that good. Those kids should be tested. If they come out clean then that’s freaking nuts. To find that many top tier high school athletes is ridiculous. I trained really hard in high school and was a pretty solid high school athlete my junior and senior year. My average speed rating on Tully Runners was 173 my junior year and 176 my senior year. These guys are most likely all in the 190’s. I was around 20th in New York State
its crazy, but these kids have been running since elementary (there are a lot of good youth programs in southern california) and have gone through serious training as well as sacrifice and for sure are legit, their training makes perfect sense and their coach knows their bodies so well, they’re truly on track to perfect their craft, it would be a heart breaker to see them fail tests. I think most high schools in cali do random drug tests for all sports though, at least mine and the ones in my area do
My XC team decided that we were gonna make fun of their team and my coach (he sucks btw) printed “4:19 is a slow mile on our team t-shirts. Our team is in the same league as Newberry Park and I got the privilege of watching them a few times. It is beyond crazy
Crazy! I ran cross country for Woodbridge and the course was our training grounds. To think a High School Athlete ran under 14 minutes is pure insanity, but 3 on the same team is just not human. Seen some amazing records, but this has to be the best ever in High School Cross County history! Look forward to the future and I will be at the meet Next year when those twins break the record!
Bro I totally understand. Though I'm not in the same league, I'm in the CIF-SS. With Great Oak the past few years and Newbury now, we have no hope, even though our team is one of our schools best ever
California also generally runs the 3 mile instead of the 5k. But yeah Mt Sac is one of the toughest xc courses around so don't let the shorter distance fool you
You didn't note that Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park are adjacent schools, 8 miles driving distance apart, in the same league and school district. TOHS also was the alma mater of (disgraced, disqualified) triple Olympic Champion Marion Jones, who holds the national record in the 100m and former high school girls Mile record holder Kim Mortensen. The next high school down the road, Westlake had national pole vault record holder Paige Sommers, the next school Agoura had Olympic marathon bronze medalist Deena Drossin Kastor and indoor long jump record holder Tara Davis. I rant about this just to ask: What's in the water there?
I ran in the 19's in high school and was good enough to go to state, r-1 school in the middle of nowhere. Just thinking of them being 4-5 minutes in front of me is literally insane.

Y'all this is my area, I had to choose between Westlake, Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, and Agoura for school. I ultimately chose Agoura, but cool to see Ventura County represented. You should look at Matthew Alpert who's a freshman at Agoura. He's insane for his level, and was brought up to varsity for this race. He will definitely be amazing.
@@jahhahn Yeah - I don't run for sports, I play water polo. The Westlake water polo program is good, and I love the coach, but the Agoura one is better. Also Agoura just has a lot more opportunities for stuff im interested in.
I ran a 15:53 ONCE for a 5k and probably averaged closer to 16:30 my Senior year. Ran in Appalachia part of VA 1981-84 for HS and i won several races but that means my best day ever would of been 18th in 1993 for this place.
Imagine a prerace conversation between an opposing team's coach and his team: Coach: Well, fellows, I've got good news and bad news. Runner: Good news first, coach. Coach: You're going to be running against Daniel Appleford. He's a really good runner. He's run some pretty fast times this year and could possibly win today. Runner: Why is that the good news? What's the bad news? Coach: He's Newbury Park's 5th-best runner.
I used to complain about the fact that my high school team never ran the 4 x 1600M relay. While rarely run, I’d wished we’d have sought out a meet to do it at as we surely would have set the national high school record. It’s been a while but I believe it was at least held in my day by a team out of suburban Philadelphia - Wissahicken. Whatever time we would have run as a team would definitely get smashed by these guys. I hope they find their way to a special meet where they can get after it.
What I find even crazier is that the top 4 runners are part of only 2 different families…and that the young family has 3 sons that dominate in cross country.
I've broke the 5min/mile a handful of times but only on a 1.5mile run. No matter how much training I put in I couldn't do it for 2 back to back miles. It is an I credible feat to be going well below that for 3 miles and still be in high school too.
If you look at US state’s individual all-time best cross country times there aren’t many states who could compete with this team. Totally unbelievable!
I just ran a race with them at it they had a different aura and were very, very, very fast lex and Leo young were so far ahead of the competition today and I believe Leo was on pace to shatter the record at Woodward
In the fall of 1992 Adams State University, won the national cross country championship with a perfect score! 1 through 5! Total of 15 points! The gap between all 5 runners was 4 seconds! How about that!!!

Most really good hs sports teams and scouted but Camarillo is very close to Newbury Park only about 20 minutes apart from each other.
Another scary thing about this performance is that their 6th runner placed 9th at this meet. Imagine being top 10 at one of toughest state meets in nation, and you don't even score for your team....
You may not score for your own team, but you add a point for everybody else (increasing the gap by an additional ~4-5 pts per team) ;)
Somewhere in Flagstaff Mike Smith has a big smile on his face
15:11 5k runner, and you’re the #5 runner on your high school team.
Not to take focus away from what these, or any other athletes have done; BUT with each new video upload,
Total Running Productions also does an *outstanding job* presenting, and editing each event. *Well done.*
Imagine being that fast. I can’t even imagine what goes through these boys’ minds.
Humans are evolving. When I was a SR Adam Goucher was our state champion and the first ever to break 15 minutes and no one was even close to him breaking 15 minutes was unheard of then
That was also at altitude. But point taken
The Young brothers are just insane. Love their channel @l&l
I saw them running at cif-ss finals and they were talking 2 miles into the race, not just words but whole conversations they are insane
There aren’t even words to describe how incredible this team is. But this video did a pretty good job
German Fernandez was in a much weaker division though. Div. 4 I believe, it makes sense there were no runners even close to him. I was there to witness his race, I was coaching at the time, my runners and I ran around the course to watch him, it was amazing to watch!
Just sucks that he had so many injuries, he should have been up there with Galen Rupp and Matt Centrowitz!
You should do a whole video on the legendary York (Illinois) High School cross country team. They’ve won dozens of state championships
They have an insane amount of runners on their team every year it’s almost always bound to get a stud. Have you ever heard of the york running scandal?
@@rapgodmaster6592 no what scandal?
I love what you guys do. Thanks for sharing.
Whats the bet D1 colleges recruit the coach after Youngs graduate. NAU will also be unstoppable if they bag the whole team. Other colleges will go hard on this with a create your own destiny sales pitch to try lure the twins and break up the unstoppable force.
Ayy I ran in that race D1 CIF State meet let’s go
My chest feels funky just seeing those times
I'm so looking forward to watching them this weekend in Huntsville!
I still get shivers watching this back
Most impressive high school XC performance in history. Period. That's insane
Proud to have ran there the other day 💯💪🏽
I want what they’re having.
I think most high schools in cali do random drug tests for all sports though, at least mine and the ones in my area do
Haters gonna hate
Would love to see more videos about high school cross country and track like these
Truly unbelievable. These guys are doing something amazing
"4:20 is not a fast high school mile, it's just not that fast"
I wanted to get that sticker after this race but the line was just too damn long.
My XC team decided that we were gonna make fun of their team and my coach (he sucks btw) printed “4:19 is a slow mile on our team t-shirts. Our team is in the same league as Newberry Park and I got the privilege of watching them a few times. It is beyond crazy
imagine graduating two of the best high school runners ever in jace and nico as well as other talents… and then managing to do this 2 years later…
I'm crying cause I got to run in the Marmonte league with these guys.
Bro I totally understand. Though I'm not in the same league, I'm in the CIF-SS. With Great Oak the past few years and Newbury now, we have no hope, even though our team is one of our schools best ever
One thing to note is that their division final race was only 2.93 miles, not a full 5k. Still fast times, especially considering that they tempo'd it.
True, but it was also run at Mt Sac..........................probably the toughest course in California.
Still 15;00 is beast mode either way!
The whole team, and the alternates...
@@iguillo
Agreed. I hated running Mt Sac and that was 50 years ago.
California also generally runs the 3 mile instead of the 5k. But yeah Mt Sac is one of the toughest xc courses around so don't let the shorter distance fool you
You forgot the mention 5 out of their 7 runners will be back next year. More record breaking performances yet to come.
2010 NYS girls State meet Fayetteville-Manlius 15 Saratoga 45. This is what makes this more impressive Saratoga was the 2nd best team in the Nation.
Yeah there’s been some great girls teams out of FM and Saratoga. I’d like a video on the best girls teams please.
@@518outdoors6 NYS girls and almost all of them upstate NY teams have been the dominant force in girls cross country since the 1990's. In case some people don't understand cross country scoring the least points for the team in 2nd behind a 15 (perfect score) is 45, F-M was 1,2,3,4,5 Saratoga was 6,7,8,9,10.
TRP: the name "German" in Spanish is pronounced as "Herman" is in English. Just so you know how the GOAT says his own first name. Some gringo made the same mistake on the video about him winning the mile and the two mile within an hour at the state meet.
Might not see a team like it again until next year when they might be better lmao
He will definitely be amazing.
you chose agoura over westlake?
@@jahhahn Yeah - I don't run for sports, I play water polo. The Westlake water polo program is good, and I love the coach, but the Agoura one is better. Also Agoura just has a lot more opportunities for stuff im interested in.
I'm sure German is pronounced "Her-mon"/ "Her-mahn". I have a Dominican co worker who's son and husband share that name
It is
I was at that State meet race
It was amazing to watch Newbury park Was dominate from start to finish
It was great to witness history
This team could probably beat many D1 college teams
Never thought I got to see one my friends in here and on top of that I actually got to see these guys in action IRL
Please stop saying “meeting” it’s called a “meet” 😂😂 but this team is GOAT for sure.
Excellent! Super Stars! Great! The Best Team Ever!
Should be noted that Newbury Park is part of Thousand Oaks, same city technically. We just love running here.
These guys are beasts. Also, notification gang.
The strange thing is that Thousand Oaks HS is the closest in proximity to Newbury Park HS, only about 4 miles away from each other
I ran a 15:53 ONCE for a 5k and probably averaged closer to 16:30 my Senior year. Ran in Appalachia part of VA 1981-84 for HS and i won several races but that means my best day ever would of been 18th in 1993 for this place.
Imagine a prerace conversation between an opposing team's coach and his team:
Coach: Well, fellows, I've got good news and bad news.
From Spain it is just unbelievable
Yoo!
I live just a little bit from Newbury Park, I can't believe I hadn't heard of this before!
Well under 14:26 lol... who’s here after Colin ran 14:03!
I hope they find their way to a special meet where they can get after it.
meanwhile me and my rookie 19:48 LMFAO i feel weak
What I find even crazier is that the top 4 runners are part of only 2 different families…and that the young family has 3 sons that dominate in cross country.
I've broke the 5min/mile a handful of times but only on a 1.5mile run. No matter how much training I put in I couldn't do it for 2 back to back miles. It is an I credible feat to be going well below that for 3 miles and still be in high school too.
This makes me get the stadium 🏟 vibes from when I ran 1 km
love your videos!
Oh, so you finally decided to cover these boys. Makes sense. This record will never be broken unless a school gets 7 power house runners
Wow. What the heck! That's very impressive.
They are the GOAT team, I don’t even think its even close.
If you look at US state’s individual all-time best cross country times there aren’t many states who could compete with this team. Totally unbelievable!
I would want to see all of them go NAU and honestly NAU can just week 10 straight championship no cap
Had a teammate who competed with these guys at this meet. Said it was an honor to have even run in the same race as these guys. I bet it was...
Mate, you forgot the most important member of the team... the COACH!
What's the coach's training plan to get such outcomes?
Truly the G.O.A.T., cross country, there will never be another team like this
Would love to hear from their coach, he must be running a hell of a programme.
The coach is even more crazy then them
With a team like that, one of the has to top that record.
Damn they beastly
These guys are awesome! Great work to the Young twins, especially!!! :-D
Damn, I'd love to see these guys running in person some day.
