    I feel like Cole Hocker broke through a mental barrier last year and gained a ton of experience in the Olympics. I think he'll win this year but not easily and with the amount of young talent behind him, it's going to be a lot of fun to keep watching in the coming years.

    I think the results the Newbury Park High School cross country team has had proves that the improvements in times comes from mostly training and mindset. I believe as more runners break the four minute barrier the mental barrier of running under four minutes is no longer stopping runners from pushing themselves to runner better times.

    Let's just clarify - the chart you showed with the altitude was in meters, not feet. 7000m is pretty significant, and sometimes people climbing mountains would use oxygen (but not usually). 7000 feet is definitely tough for peak performance, and a few people might get a headache, but nobody's going to use oxygen, at all. Oh, and shout out from Newbury Park (900 feet elevation).

    • @michaelharrison8517
      @michaelharrison8517 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The body also compensates for living in higher altitude regions by producing more red blood cells, this acclimatization occurs pretty shortly too. No doubt athletes who live there would be adapted.

    While Nico Young’s performance was impressive, let’s remember this.
    A. 4:02 isn’t 3:54. 3:54 is 3:54. It’s not a World Junior (U20) record. And..
    B. Even if 4:02 was 3:54, it wouldn’t be a Junior (U20) WR, because a Junior is defined as someone who will not turn 20 in the year the competition is held. Nico Young was born 7/20/2002; he turns 20 before the end of the year, so he’s not a junior. And..
    C. Even if 4:02 was 3:54 (which it isn't), and if 19 year old Nico Young were classified as a Junior(U20) (which he's not), it STILL wouldn’t be a WR, nor even an AR…as then 19 year old Cole Hocker dropped a 3:50.55 at the Tyson in Fayetteville on 2/12/21.

    You said 1,363 athletes have broken 4 minutes. It's actually quite a few more than that, though there is some contention as to precisely how many, because some remain officially undocumented. World Athletics' Stats Zone currently records 1,377 athletes under 4 minutes - but this is OUTDOORS only; it does not include those that have achieved the mark INDOORS ONLY. For example, Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker went sub 4 indoors in 2021 but have never run sub 4 outdoors. Indoors, there have been 694 athletes go sub 4. You'd have to spend quite some time figuring out how many broke the mark indoors only to add to the 1,377 outdoor performers. I think it takes the total to about 1,600 athletes. But on top of this, there are several performances that are omitted from World Athletics' Stats Zone. I've found many instances in the past of omitted performances, particularly from the 1970s - 1990s. So I would put the total figure at around 1,650 - 1,700 athletes.

    • @BuzzedtheTower

      You also have to account for the fact that the mile isn't run nearly as often at the 1500. I'm sure there are a fair few runners out there who never enter an actual mile race, so they aren't on the list even though they have a 1500 PR that is more than enough

    • @PrentisHancock1
      @PrentisHancock1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BuzzedtheTower - It's a valid point, that there have been many athletes who have run 1,500m in the equivalent of a sub 4 minute mile, which is about 3:42 but have never actually gone on to run a sub 4 mile, whether that is because they've never raced a mile or, if they have, if they didn't achieve it because it was a tactical race. This is why I encouraged Adam [Fogg] to set up Isaac [Basten] as soon as possible, to revise his mile PB, as he had a 3:40 1,500 but only a 4:12 mile. He achieved it, clocking 3:58.88 indoors on 11th December, 2021, becoming the 599th all-time American to achieve the feat.

      Running a sub 4 minute mile is impressive but not as much as it used to. What's insane is running a 3:58 mile at the end of a 5000m race. Even crazier Is when the winning time is 12:39!
      Only one person has done that. Can anyone guess who?

    Wonder how many records would be broken if they had the exact conditions of the 1904 olympics...same training regimen, diet, running shoes, clothing and track conditions/materials. The newer shoes have played a great part in the all the records being broken. Many of the past athletes could have done the same thing...including milers.

    when you say mile do you mean true mile or 1600? Cause two guys went sub 4 in the 1600 at UW's Dempsey indoor preview

  • @flynnboyle949
    @flynnboyle949 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    And 598 guys ran the equivalent time over 1500. The numbers of sub 4:00 milers have increased but it’s still not a distance that most of the world cares about.

    The mile is not really run outside the USA. I reckon the increase was due to more miles being run in international competitions

    How have the number of athletes changed over the years? I think that would be quite interesting to put up against the stats of more people running sub 4 min. As a comparison I follow power lifting a bit and there the strength gain is crazy, something that would give you a medal at IPF worlds 15-20 years ago might not be enough to qualify to the competition today. But that is at least somewhat proportional to overall increase in people going to the gym to lift weights, maybe finding that they are strong and decide to focus on that. The talent pool is way bigger now.

    1:04 ummmm 93 is not "nearly double" 59, it's actually a little over 1.5 times which is nowhere near double.

    3000m and 5000m distance favors Nico, think he will run 7:40. CH is a 1500/1600m beast, not sure he has endurance to hang in this field of pace is quick from start.
