Just grabbed one of these today based on your videos. I am *shocked* about how very good my example is. It is easily the quality of my el-cheapo Schrade Divergent, which was three times the cost and is AUS-8, not D2. Yeah, the edge on the DropOut was basically that of a butter knife out of the package, but in all honesty I'm an old guy and I have no expectations of a sharp factory edge after a few decades of messing with cheap knives. Since this will be a beater work knife used on various edge-destroying materials, I just threw it on the accusharp and after a few passes to set the angle(And scrape the blade coating off) it sharpened up nicely. What a clean, spiffy action for $10. The construction equipment orange handle color is a bit extra but I can live with it.
The two I've checked out were plenty sharp out of the box but this isn't the first time a dull factory edge has been mentioned. Gotta love OT's quality control.
@@cammobunker i love my divergent, but the divergent has 3 times the material on it than the great value drop out. You can also catch it on sale sometimes for very cheap i cant remember for sure but i think i got mine for maybe $18-20 on a sale. The sharpening choil is a nightmare on it but i laid back the apex to a very acute angle and its a slicing beast considering the price and steel
It’s a $10 - sharper than a rock 🪨 knife in high visibility Orange. It beats all my expectations and serves the purpose it was designed for. Definitely throwing on in all my life vest and backpacks 👍👍
I had the same result you had. My first one was “perfect” as far as centering. I went and got a second one as a backup, gift, etc. and its blade is a touch off center. I may loosen the scales and give it a slight tweak to see if I can center it up. Overall, I still like the knife and I think it will get a lot of people started in EDC that don’t have a lot of disposable income.
@@blackbirdtactics8250 i’ve got three. All good. I sometimes do day labor with a tree and forrestry company. I’ve worked the last couple of days and have used it to cut balls of vines to sepsrste them from the tree(s) and top li cut off limbs for chipping. They have held up very well and stayed sharp
This is a great value knife. The only two complaints I have about the knife are the wobble in the blade and the lack of sharpness out of the package. My knife has good cutting ability due to the hollow grind, but is pretty dull. Tested it on paperboard, newspaper, envelope paper, magazine paper, plastic Ramen bag, and potato chip bag.
I got four of these. All good but one has an ever so slight uneven grind on the top edge as you showed, but nowhere near that bad. I've been carrying that one for two weeks and it does pretty damn good with what I have thrown at it so far. Still sharp as it was out of the package. Been cutting paper, cardboard, opening boxes, blister packages, heavy plastic bags with the twine reinforcement, string, small rope, cut up old t-shirts for rags, and sharpened a few pencils. I even cut through a soda can just to see how well it would do. It was like cutting butter in death valley in August at high noon. I may have missed a few things it has been used on so far.
I rit dyed mine black, VERY pretty, putting it back together is a pain…still working on it, axis locks are notoriously annoying to put back together and its parts are quite small for the larger handed folks
@@knivesiguessthe bearings are tiny, as is the stop pin and stand offs. The stop pin is also isnt anchored in any way, it just falls through the other side. I would love a bug out, can afford a bug out…but the bug out is over priced to me by $80-$100 bucks. Youre not really getting $180 of knife imho - so the $10 dropout was a no brainer 😂
How did you get it totally black? I tried to boil water then pour it into a cup, then add the dye and then dip my G10 scales (a different knife, not the ozark) into it and it went from OD green to forrest green, just a few shades darker.
@@JC_1095 “rit dyemore synthetic” graphite specificallythe synthetic. Ive heard that the regular rit dye gives mixed results. I used a half of the bottle and left mine on the stove with the heat still on sort of lowish and let it got probably 40-60 mins checking on it. I also dyed some g10 hatchet handles, g10 small fixed blade scales, and some micarta in the same batch. The ozark went black very quickly but i let it go long. On the hatchet scales theres still a glint of the original color if you try really hard to find it. Oh, and youve got to degrease the scales and then use gloves to handle it to keep from getting inconsistent spots - or at least thats what they say and what i did. There are videos where theyve used the regular rit vs synthetic and got similar results to what you describe, hope that helps
Mine works great with normal use but the lock bar gets stuck and fails to engage after being exposed to vibrations and after attempting to adjust the pivot. Oiling the lock bar area and moving it for about 10 minutes two times over freed it up again. Its just a little rough. Fortunately the spring is strong. If the lock bar fails to engage, its actually quite dangerous especially with a ball bearing pivot. The blade swings closed very quickly when you dont expect it. I love this knife but wouldnt hand it to a lot of people unless i opened it for them.
Got mine put back together after rit dying black…over night, a few choice words, and a few arthritis pills later…the black is very pretty…i have a second one that i was going to dye red. For the love of no pain in my hand i think its going to stay orange. Its slightly off centered now but when my hands quit hurting ill try some of the centering tricks. The screws were very finicky, not sure that that the body screws werent superglued so i had a few that were funny going back in. But hey, ive got it looking nice, my own shaving sharp edge, i think im going to enjoy my Great Value Dropout - love how light weight it is, a little cheapy but comfortable in hand
On mine the pivot was good but the stand offs i had to use a pair of pliers on one side to get them off, and there was something on them that wasnt loctite. Also with centering, i ended up ever so slightly bending the scales, which are thin/easy to do because nothing else worked. Its not going to be my edc just because i have much better ones, but its a decent fidget and will probably find a long term place in my edc bag as a back up. The geometry is so thin and it took such a sharp edge, itll be a super slicer if ever i need one
They may not be selling them long enough to have a price drop. The time to grab one is when you see it. This could be like the axis locks that drop on Christmas where they never sell them again after a couple of months
I bought the last two at my local Walmart. One was slightly off-center and the blade was a little wobbly, open and closed. The other however was dead center with no wobbles. Both had great action but one was slightly stiffer than the other. Both were very sharp. It seems like there are a few quality control issues, but for 10 bucks I can't complan.
@@RagingPoo tighten the pivot, one of mine was like that, i had to take the picot halfway out and then tighten it down because it felt like something was gumming it up a tad. Mine had an omega spring fail within first 10x opening/closing 😢. You should compare their Omega springs vs what Kizer/ Benchmade use. Maybe they're very thin and/or poor pot steel material?
My running joke is that this knife is why Ozark Trail has been selling us cheap axis locks the last few years. So we’d have extra “omega” springs laying around already lol.
I need to figure out how to take an axis lock apart and put it back together first. My hands shake so much that I don't wanna do it until I HAVE to for some reason.
I did have to sacrifice the stock clip by cutting a piece off to act as a spacer to go under the titanium clip to give it the right angle and tension. I do this with most pocket knives I buy that have a stamped clip. Fun, fidgety knife that I plan to use quite a bit so I decided to spoil it with th titanium clip lol.
You'd be amazed how many civilians are ordering 10 at a time and buying out all the stock in a store. Most common is ordering 4 at a time for the free shipping.
I HATE it when they're locked up like that, I had the same problem with the Würdig. I should have just gone to another department and grabbed someone but I just went to another Walmart instead.
The Civivi is a much nicer knife as far as finishing is concerned. I picked up one of these Bugout knockoffs and to me it is more of a glovebox or chuck in a toolbox to have a decent knife when needed kind of thing. The plastic handles do not scream quality. For carrying around, the extra $20 for the Mini Praxis is worth it in my opinion.
Yeah, the Civivi is gonna be nicer and built better for sure. It depends on what you need it for. If you're doing a bunch of nasty work, get the OT. For general carry and normal use get the Civivi.
@knivesiguess Thanks! Mainly daily carry and breaking down the occasional boxes. Primarily times when my Super Tinker main blade may not be enough, nothing to completely beat it up. I'm always on the hunt for budget knives with good edge retention. If you know any that might beat the Civivi, feel free to let me know!
Just doing that light work you can get by with almost anything. Getting up past 14c28n, D2, 8cr, Aus8, things start getting more expensive pretty quickly. I'd go with the Civivi and call it a day.
It's ridiculously good. I personally would have exchanged it for a better one, but stuff like that would bother me. If my first one wasn't devoid of QC issues I would have returned one of them.
I never see anyone ask this question on non reversible pocket clips so I'm going to ask.is it possible? New to knife's here, and wondering if it's possible to drill and tap for left side carry.
As mentioned, a LOT of knives have reversible or 4 position clips. If you know your way around modifying stuff it's not that hard of a job to drill and tap for a clip on the other side, but probably not worth the effort on something like this.
Once you get a little older it’s hard to find like minded people and even harder to find a good Dungeon Master to have a proper D&D session. But those were the days as were other role playing dice games. I also feel like most adults lose that sense of imagination to continue with those types of games as well. Not all of us but most.
The big thing is scheduling. My schedule won't allow me to do anything. I've been working pretty much every Saturday/Sunday for ages now and there's no point in trying to request one of them off.

I don't really mess with clones like that, the Bugout clones are so prevalent that everyone else under the sun has covered them. I feel like the hype is warranted on this one. The $5 axis locks from the last couple of holidays were just fun to play with.
So I've had a few Ozark trails. Pretty much all where very sharp and easy to sharpen. They are cheap and cheaply made steel quality isn't good. Save your pennies and get a better budget knife
I'll be honest the D2 on this thing has held up to some ROUGH treatment. I've seen one get snapped intentionally to check out the grain structure and it look pretty damn good. Nice gray powder. There isn't anything that's gonna beat this at $10, but a Civivi or something in the $30 range IS gonna feel a lot nicer in the hand.
Knife snobbery is really starting to get under my skin. This thing is $10. The review should consist of telling us it held an edge. It opens and closes smoothly. The end end. All this other stuff about QC and blade warp and cosmetic issues and the centering especially being pointless are just idiotic comments to make on a $10 knife. Would you do this kind of a review on a gas station knife? Of course not. This is an awesome knife that somebody who is trying to get geared up for a quick camping trip would be real happy to have. Even as an EDC, as long as it holds up to wear and tear over time, it's great. End of story.
I have to mention it because it's important to a lot of people looking at it and I would not be doing a very good job if I didn't pass that information along.

I never see anyone ask this question on non reversible pocket clips so I'm going to ask.is it possible? New to knife's here, and wondering if it's possible to drill and tap for left side carry.
Yeah it’s doable but you would need slightly longer screws because the other side isn’t recessed.
There are a huge number of knives out there that have reversible clips on them. Granted they arent 10$, but they are out there.
As mentioned, a LOT of knives have reversible or 4 position clips. If you know your way around modifying stuff it's not that hard of a job to drill and tap for a clip on the other side, but probably not worth the effort on something like this.
@@knivesiguessThis.
@@pretentiousname01 that's why I want to do it.because it's only a $10 knife.thank you for the reply
I see people are already taking advantage and selling them on eBay for $35 to $50…
WOW. I thought it capped at $25ish.
So many videos on this knife out there and nobody bothered to take it apart
Someone will. I haven't fought with disassembling and reassembling an axis lock yet and I don't want to do 2 25 minute videos trying to figure it out.
@@knivesiguessthey’re not hard. I put new springs in my benchmade last night in fact.
I 100% expect my first reaction after working on one will be "Oh. That wasn't so bad." But it doesn't stop my bran from playing it up quite a bit.
Mine has a brighter orange color on the belt side vs the other.
That's on all of them, sadly
U mean the OT Great Pumpkin,
Potato, tomato
@@knivesiguess one is a starchy root vegetable, the other is a fruit…..
I was gonna say, “ I know u r, but what am I?” - but that would kick that gate wide open, LOL
This knife is impossible to find now........
They're SUPPOSED to be getting restocked, no idea what's happening there
I checked two Super Walmarts for this knife - no luck yet.
Bummer. Don't go too crazy. More should be showing up. I've been told the best thing to do os order one for pickup at a nearby Walmart and wait for them to get it. And cross your fingers on the QC issues.
@@knivesiguess I'll order 5 so I can return any which have QC issues. Thanks for the advice !
That's how you commit to the bit right there.
You cant even find this on the web site in south central Florida mine got stuck in ct with a bad barcode why it coming from Connecticut when they had them a half hr away wtf 😅😅but they worked it out 2 day tuned into 8 days grrrr 😅😊
You remember the weeks long saga trying to get the HF Icon knife in? Hate it when it happens but it happens.
@@knivesiguessyup... everytime now the icon is just sitting there staring at me whenever i go in lol Walmart definitely sold more than they had in my state 🤣
Hopefully they'll be back in soon.
@@knivesiguess someone said it's a one run deal like all the axis locks they make I guess they don't like money lol
I hope not. But, I still have mine. It's just weird.
Bob Elkhart 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Dragon magazine was freaking awesome!
I would buy this for $200 without hesitation
Easy, there. $10 will get you where you wanna go.
Now it's sold out everywhere lol
I'm not surprised. It happened with the $5 axis locks too.
@@knivesiguess I asked a store employee and he said looked like it wasn’t gonna be replenished. I don’t know if that’s true
@@tindang5938You trust the WalMart employees?
That's what I have concerns about. It'd really suck to not have these available as GOOD beater/throwaway knives.
Im going to grab 2.
It's a GEM...that's Good Enough Made not Benchmade.
Wait...
It's a Hug out...that's a homage Bugout...
I'll be here all night.
I've seen SO MANY different names for it by now
@@knivesiguess I'm torn between "Benchmade we have at home" and "The Carrot"
Best review so far
Thanks! I'm trying to get as much testing as I can for you guys.
None of those to be had in
this region.
Oof. Maybe they'll be there soon.
people are hoarding them. Round 2 will probably be much lower quality to try and meet demand.
Nah, they'll remain the same. It's OT. Once they release something it seems to remain unchanged until it's discontinued.

Interesting 🧐
Indeededly. Most indeededly.
You will just be lucky to even get one much less return it. They will give you a refund of your $9.97 and call it good. Sold out Everywhere
It's not a seasonal item at least. More should be showing up soon, and more available once the hype dies down a bit.
most of the later ones are bent .im glad i got a chinese copy much better on wish same price .people freak out on junk lol .at least mine says benchmade quality is pretty good...thanks for the video
I don't really mess with clones like that, the Bugout clones are so prevalent that everyone else under the sun has covered them. I feel like the hype is warranted on this one. The $5 axis locks from the last couple of holidays were just fun to play with.
China
Everybody buying many of these in one go is very inconsiderate. They're now basically sold out everywhere. Thanks for your selfishness.
I didn't do it. I grabbed a couple for the channel but that was it.
@knivesiguess I believe you but the heat treat is inconsistent
I can't speak to that at the moment, the two I tested did fantastic.
