It hurts 😢 it's a $10 knife
This is a KSO: knife shaped object. My first knife was a Kershaw Tarheel for $15 new. Great knife.
Ah .the old ,made from a kitchen sink stainless steel blade . Classic.
Bold of you to assume its not pot metal.
The saying you can't polish a turd is true.
Actually I've seen literal turds that have been polished
Bold to assume someone quenched it.
I try desperately to hang onto my last tiny shred of faith in humanity much to my own catastrophic fault
😮really like this but like the ritter hogue a bit more
Having not handled the Ritter Hogue myself, you know more than I do.
Sandviks and alike(aeb-l, nitro-v) are sort of blade steels. So it has low and small size of carbides and can be sharpened to big numbers. But edge resistance is not good. Toughness is tough.
We're learning.
Handle is fancy actually
Lol don't do polishing and shit. One stone of 300 grit is best way to go.
I like my polished edges. Definitely not heavy use edges but they do what I want them to day to day extremely well
Yay! It's tip-down. #winning (probably not actually winning, cause I doubt being tip-up is enough to make up for being such a cheap Amazon knife)
It could be tip up and I'd still carry a Smith & Wesson first.
Yes, but it has stars!
Oh yeah! I forgot about the stars. All sins are forgiven, this thing's better than a Rockstead.
I prefer tip-up, but it's not like it matters for me. I don't use a knife clip. I just toss it in my pocket.
It's all personal preference and a running joke that gets people all fired up in the comments sometimes.
I will never buy a Microtech knife for the sole reason that you VOID THE WARRANTY if you sharpen the knife yourself. That's ridiculous, especially for an -in my opinion- overpriced overhyped pocket knife. Good lord.
We think we might be able to at least remove the thumb studs.
Very classy knife, it will be interesting to see how magnacut performs.
Given everything I've seen about it so far I'm gonna be prepping for a LOOOONG stream.
Hogue !! Get to the chopper !!!
Freehand edges it is.
Nah, we'll just have an angle change going into the heel.
i cant wait for cardboard slayer!
I both can and can't wait
Nice snag on the sale. Wouldn't mind owning one of those myself, though I would probably go for the wharncliffe. $100 is a bit rich for me for a single edc tool, though. Have fun with it!
Yeah, 100's a little steep unless you're going one and done in which case it's a good deal for the long haul.
I refuse to support companies who make it difficult to repair by yourself. That being said, mangacut is amazing and the knife looks very nice
We may be able to remove the thumb studs after all
@knivesiguess is the main blade locking screw adjustable without specialty tools? I could not tell
That one looks 100% proprietary
@@knivesiguess ughhhh the knife looks so nice too
I don't think they make the lava gmascus in magnacut do they? I got a second hand 20cv gmascus model and resold it, didn't like it as much as my 20cv Bugout. But I would like to get a nice magnacut one into my collection at some point
You can get some Gmascus at Knifecenter, their special colors.
My Deka is my work knife. It's been designated that by me, for work. Great knife, love the warncliffe version too.
NICE. The hardest use this'll see outside of an emergency's gonna be Cardboard Slayer™
Oh, one more thing, I picked up a Knafs Lander 2 (it was on sale for about $100), and while it weighs about 1 ounce more than the Bugout, I would put it in the Bugout Killer category as well. Similar size, S35VN instead of S30V, pretty low weight, deep carry clip, small profile (almost the exact same profile as the Hogue Deka in length, width, and height), Axis-style lock, and just seems to fit the same usage (unless the extra ounce is no go for you). I am pretty sure the Bugout was designed with minimalists in mind, but let's be honest, how many people carrying a Bugout are really trying to shave every ounce off their gear? Most Bugouts will only cut cardboard and open a few packages, like pretty much every other folding knife. But this is just my opinion. I really, really like the Lander 2. I didn't think I would and only bought it because it was on sale and I could easily resell it to get my money back if I didn't like it. But I find myself reacing for it more and more every morning. It has grown on me so quickly. It is so awesome when I completely click with a knife. Doesn't happen enough. Anyway, enjoy your day and thanks for all the knife content. Edit: I completely forgot to mention that it comes in blue, just like the O.G. Bugout. Just another similarity to point out. Peace!
The Landers are on the eventual list. I have something else special that should be here tomorrow for us to take a look at.
@knivesiguess Awesome. I still can't believe how much I like the Lander 2. I got the Deka, and the Lander 2 about a week apart and both have been fightng each other for pocket time. Sometimes I switch them at lunchtime. Two great, lightweight knives that punch far above their weight. I will be getting some new scales for the Deka, probably aluminum, and the Lander has several inexpensive options for scales, too. Ciao!
I just happened to have my Deka (blue with the wharncliffe blade) in my hand when this video popped up. I heard you saying that you needed a proprietary tool to remove the thumb studs and it got me thinking about the Cedric & Ada video that was done on the Deka and he took the studs off and never mentioned a proprietary tool... so I went to my desk and used a T8 torx bit on both sides, I was able to get them off with a little effort. They used red loctite, so it may be a bit of a bear, but they definitely come off. Figured you may want to know that. From what I have read, Hogue is liberal with the red loctite and, as you mentioned, are weird about people working in their knives. I am not a fan of that, but the thumb studs are removable, at least. Have a great day!
I DID want to know that. Thanks!! Literally everything I saw online said it had to be drilled through.
@@knivesiguess I am glad I saw your video then. I was stopping my Deka when the video popped up, so it was perfect timing. I love that little knife. It is almost too light; sometimes I forget it is in my pocket.
All the body screws are removed with a T8 torx. I haven’t heard anything about the thumstuds thought. Try a T8?
I'm gonna try a T8 come time to sharpen it. I did a fair amount of research on it when I first saw the weird thumb studs and everything said you had to drill it out but I might be wrong.
@ try contacting Hogue. They might have an email on their website
We're trying the T8 before we do anything else.
@ Sharp Ends on TH-cam has a video removing the thumb studs. I’ve heard that one side turns and the other side is pressed in but his video shows both turning. 🤷

Ahhh yes. The tip up team. Love those guys.
Oh, and the hogue is cool I guess. I'm not jealous of the price you paid at all. It's okay, just enjoy the nice things without me. (I hope it never leaves your pocket)
I'm definitely gonna enjoy this week with it.
@@knivesiguessthe week after vid should be fun to see too.
They go on sale for around $100 often. I bought mine off of Amazon for $105, I think, in early December. It is a great knife at the retail price, but for around $100, it is sublime.
That's a pretty cool knife
Right?
@@knivesiguess how good does it cut?
With the factory edge it cuts well. It hit that 190 on the tester.
@knivesiguess dang
You had me at the jingling keys. Needs to be a redeemable stream option, could watch it for days
Actually I like that one. We need to find a way to work that in somehow
I have my VOSTEED RACCOON also in Red here with me now and I love this knife.
Dude, after all the Ozark Trails and Mossy Oaks I did in such short order this thing feels AMAZING.
@knivesiguess It's a really great knife especially for the price. I paid $60.00 for mine and I'll never regret it. Love yours with the snowflakes it looks great.
According to knife steel nerds, 14c28n ranks about a 3 on edge retention. D2 is about a 5. I don't know who to believe about these things, though. One site says VG10 has better edge retention than ARRPM9 and the nerds site says the reverse.
I kinda take it with a grain of salt and try to balance out what I've experienced alongside the available information. Between secondhand information being passed around, conflicting information, and things being hard to quantify you end up having to aggregate a lot of it to wind up with an answer.
I did a quick check on the stats of 14c28n and d2 to see how they compare to each other for carbon content. 14c28n has .62% carbon. D2 has 1.5% carbon. You probably know this already, but generally speaking the higher the carbon content the harder the steel and the more wear resistance it will have. Conversely the higher the carbon content the more brittle the steel tends to be, AKA the lower the toughness (at least until you get into some of the powder metallurgy super-steels). So while 14c28n and D2 can be hardened to roughly similar levels (though D2 can be hardened to a higher HRC), based on the carbon content I'd expect 14c28n to be better than 12c27, similar to 7cr17mov/440A/B and/or 8cr13mov/AUS8, and below 440c and VG10 in terms of edge retention. But that's just some rough guesswork based on the carbon content and what I'm seeing on the various knife steel stat sites.
That makes sense. I'm familiar with very basic metallurgy, I just yet again didn't think to actually look the composition up before I hit record. The difference in carbon content seems to line up with the results though.
@@knivesiguess Yeah. For reference sake... 7cr and 440A are around .7% carbon. 8cr/Aus 8 are around .8% carbon. 9cr/440C is around .9% carbon. VG10 is around 1% carbon. There are a number of other things like manganese, molybdenum, and vanadium that can affect hardness, but carbon is the main one. As for the Raccoon, I checked Vosteed's site. They say the Raccoon's blade is hardened to around 60 HRC. (A quick check says that the normal range 14c28n is hardened to is 55-60HRC.) 60HRC is a bit more than most budget steels (that are not d2) are normally hardened to. (Most budget steels like 7cr/8cr/etc... are in the 56-59 range to balance hardness and toughness.) But 14c28n has a reputation for good toughness so Vosteed may have decided to push the limits a bit, which would explain why you got between 8cr and d2 in cardboard slayer. As for D2... I've heard Ganzo usually hardens their D2 to 60-62HRC. If the HRC numbers I'm seeing online are right that's probably pretty typical.
We may need to look at some Ganzo D2 and see if it performs any better if they're going above 60.
Correct me if I’m wrong. I usually am I’m still learning… it seems like that steel is equivalent to aus8 and 9cr18 cause didn’t you have similar results with the rhino?
Yeah, the Rhino and Bullmastiff were pretty similar.
@ hey man we’re learning… just for comparison do you have a buck knife in 420c? Buck has a magical process done by cute little elves using fairy farts or something where it was basically a super steel and to this day they still offer the 110 in it, I would really love to see a standard 110 on cardboard slayer, forgive me if you already did it, if so please link it for me to check out
