"Call Of Ktulu" is slightly overrated though. In my opinion, "Orion" and "To Live Is To Die" are superior.

@@j.j.4150 Overrated?? I can't think of a better way to describe the story of Ktulu than with that majestic song, I even imagine him rising from a stormy sea when i listen to it. The only song that doesn't convince me at all from that album is Escape.

Yeah it's probably my second behind Justice. Not really a Metallica fan anymore, but obviously was as a kid. Lightning has some of their best songs..... of course people will tout Puppets as their best..... most overrated more accurately

Takeaways from tonight's split squad all male testosterone edition episode:
    1. Steve, Nick, Ryan, Chris and Rich in the house
    2. "I may have gotten the assignment wrong from the teacher"
    3. "You put that on, I'm flipping some tables"
    4. "Fuck it. I'm just going to wing it"
    5. "... and I have a bunch of other versions too"
    6. "My wife almost got killed while I got the album signed by Kerry King. I'm glad she didn't but either way I got the autograph..."
    7. "It's a shitty world we live in but it would be even shittier without Slayer"
    8. "Oh great! Now I gotta buy it again..."
    9. Cheeseburger Metal
    10. Ryan's face licking canine shows up 16 minutes and 36 seconds into the show...
    11. Ready To Fucky
    12. "It's like drilling holes into your head, heavy"
    13. "Do you wipe peanut butter on your face before the show?"
    14. "I have naturally salty, delicious skin"
    15. "Here's the three versions I've got of this one..."
    16. "playing with your dolls again..."
    17. "You can tell they recorded it in a studio, not in a toilet"

Once again, SoT shows why the episodes are so great even to those of us who may not know too much about the subject. Excellent topic and discussion everyone. And so glad to see the return of Steve Keeler - Steve, you've been missed. A lot of discussion in the show and great information to think about. And a nod to "A Man Of Many Hats" Alo for deftly changing his list while the show was in process. Of course, Butch, Sydney and Lynne were missed but this was a great selection of folks to offer their opinions. Thanks again to Chris, Nick, Rich, Ryan, Steve and you, too, Pete, for another great Hudson Valley Squares show.

Great heavy record. I'd also argue that Razor's ''Evil Invaders'' is heavy as fuck for 1985. And as I mentionned in another post : Slaughter ''Strappado'' is some seriously grimey, grinding thrash with that chainsaw sound.

@@vbl_metal4life236 It definitely is, but listening to Morbid Visions an Schizophrenia back to back I felt like Schizophrenia is less close to Death Metal for me. Another Canadian Thrash band that was important in the development of death metal was Slaughter with their album Strappado, Napalm Death later covering the opening track from it. Master was also one of the first bands to play what would later be called death metal on their 1985 demo, although they didn't release a full studio album until 1990. I also think that it's important to mention some of the more visceral and intense hardcore punk of the time that a lot of the early death, black and grind bands were into. Black Flag's My War album was one of the most abrasive and harsh sounding recordings out there at the time of it's release in 1984, as was the early material of Poison Idea. Cool show and topic!

There’s a picture almost dead center on the thumbnail showing an album I’m surprised no one mentioned (if you did I may not have caught it). Sabbat History of a Time to Come. That album is a precursor to black metal. Cradle of Filth essentially developed much of their sound around them. Sadus Swallowed in Black deserves some love too but I’m not sure if it really meets the criteria, may have come out a bit late considering but it left a mark. Holy Terror is also an unsung hero…

This is probably my fav topic so far on Hudson Valley Squares. I, like all of you fellows was grinning like a kid in a toy store all the way through. Scream Bloody Gore completely changed my metal world when I heard it for the first time in 1987, also Messiah Extreme Cold Weather and Possessed Seven Churches I agree. Sarcofago I agree Ryan just mind blowing early savagery. Hellhammer Apocalyptic Raids for sure. Schizophrenia the reissue with Troops of Doom is my fav Sepultura album still. Bathory and Mercyful Fate for sure. Nasty Savage incredibly underrated. Ryan that Tormentor album is a massive grail for me. I agree about Attila, I saw Mayhem live in 2015 late at night at a big metal festival in Jakarta Indonesia and his performance was mind blowing and he had a whole crowd of 40,000 completely captivated what a showman. Sadus so good . Ryan once again showing the classic Australian bands, Sadistik Exekution legendary band down here famous for their crazy shows too. Slaughter Lord !!!
That “death metal compilation” is such a classic of those bands early more extreme material. Celtic Frost Morbid Tales is one also some very early of the more slowed down chugging early precursor death metal on there. Those very early Carcass albums also kinda started something too. Black Death also I think we’re doing some pioneering
But I agree with everyone’s picks
I could go on and on bc I loved this subject so much. Brilliant brilliant show everyone. So much love for Hudson Valley Squares

    Bulldozer- The day of wrath
    Sabbat- A cautionary tale
    Onslaught- Power from hell
Hardcore punk was also a big influence on extreme metal. Discharge and Broken Bones being obvious contenders. But I'd also include Septic Deaths now that I have youre attention what do I do with it?, Siege's drop dead, Voids side of their split with Faith and detestation by G.I.S.M.

In 1987, I wrote to a band from Texas named Necrovore, asking for a copy of their demo tape, which has since come to be called "Divus de Mortuus." They wrote back with a hand-written personal letter and the cassette tape. It was thrashy but darker and more extreme than most thrash. The vocals on straight Death Metal are hard for me to get into because there’s not much melody. I need melody as well. -Macabre - Grim Reality (1987)
    -Slaughter - Strappado (1987)
-The Accüsed - The Return Of... Martha Splatterhead (1986) (Blaine was just one of the most extreme vocalists out there and Scott Carlson told me that he was an influence on his delivery on Repulsion's Horrified)
-Bulldözer - The Day Of Wrath (1985)

Great video Pete, Terrible Certainty I had that on LP back in the day, certainly Sodom.
    1,Onslaught The Force
2,Bulldozer The Day of Wrath. If some early Raven had been speeded up it would have been included as a early prototype. 👍
Pete got a idea for a extension of this video, Black Metal in the 90s, just the 90s though, it would have to be around 2 hours because of the importance of the scene and those albums. 👍

For All you Mercyful Fate fans. Check out Brats - 1980 or the song Heavy Rocker. Denner, Shermann, Cheyenne and Monroe. The song Accepted (with intro) are also great. Could be King grinning.
Also Brats - CBS demo from 1981 with King Diamond and Carsten Volsing on guitar replacing Shermann
Also the old Brats punk days. Dreams. Hank the Wank on guitar.
And Shermann in his band Fate after MF.
For example the song Get Up and Go or Backdoor Man. Much more commercial
There are also Zoser Mez - Vizier of the Wasteland. Denner/Shermann feat. Kenny Lübcke on vocals, Claus Weiergang on bass and Morten Nielsen on drums. Actually this number are Desert of Deception but mentioned as Vizier of The Wasteland which were the album title

That Death Metal sampler with Running Wild & Helloween is a bit of a misnomer, but Rich Catino quickly redeemed himself.with his other picks. Great pics! I love Torment In Fire, Sacrifice's debut & Kreator's first two records, Endless Pain & Pleasure To Kill!
The Sacrifice album reminds me of Onslaught's debut, Power From Hell, and Haunting The Chapel era Slayer.

Really interesting discussion. You guys covered most of the major picks. Really glad that Ryan picked sarcofago which has to be mentioned in a list like this. I picked some relatively less well known ones that did influence major extreme metal bands and which were super extreme for that time.
    My picks
Morbid-december moon (a little band that released this extremely influential ep in 1987 with lg petrov on drums and dead on vocals who would go on and front major bands and we all know which. One of the first death metal outputs in my opinion.)
Poison-into the abyss 1986 (not the poppy glam band haha. This was a German blackened thrash band that inspired many Norwegian black metal bands and several extreme bands from germany. Really outlandish stuff and underground)
Amebix-arise! (One of the most influential crust punk albums of all time which was a punk style with extreme vocals with dystopian and apocalyptic themes. I know for sure that this is one of Thomas lindberg's favourite albums and this really inspired darkthrone as well)
Slayer-hell awaits (I don't care what everybody else thinks but this is the first death metal album ever released for me. Although on several songs they flirt with the line between thrash and death metal. It was radically different from what came before and what came after, many of the riffs were tremolo picked and the lyrics were more gory and darker. Necrophiliac is one of my favorite slayer songs and I consider it as the death metal song)
Sepultura-morbid visions (what a radically different album from the rest of the catalogue. This can maybe be considered the first black metal album as its so dark and no thrash chords on this one. The vocals were also quite different with more darker and occult themes. Definitely influential for the black metal scene)
    Honorable mentions
    Sodom-obsessed by cruelty
    Sadus-chemical exposure
    Die kreuzen-die kreuzen
    Bathory-blood fire death
    Bulldozer-the day of wrath

I am 45 years old and the first extreme metal album that was ever brought to my attention besides Slayer and Mercyful Fate was by Rigor Mortis ST on Capital Records 1988 and had movie samples from Texas Chainsaw Massacre/ Re-Animator and was still melodic enough to be catchy as hell with extreme sounding guitars and pummeling bass plus Harden Harrison bashing the skins with great production ta boot I don't really know if this is the first metal album with movie samples but it's the first one I ever heard

  • @Rabant777
    @Rabant777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Show No Mercy was the first "extreme" album I heard. I remember hearing it for the first time at a friend's house ..... we had to take a break before putting side 2 on. We were already familiar with Kill 'em All and had heard a couple of Venom songs but Slayer's music was so extreme to our ears it was exhausting.
I think that first listen would have been Christmas 1983, and we were fans of Kiss, Lizzy, Whitesnake and Maiden so this was a big departure.

Thrash that was key to the birth of extreme metal would have to include:
OBVIOUSLY the early Slayer staples (Show No Mercy, Haunting The Chapel, Hell Awaits and Reign In Blood).
In The Sign Of Evil and Obsessed By Cruelty by Sodom - KEY influences to second wave black metal.
Endless Pain and Pleasure to Kill - massive contributors to the onset of death metal which is obvious when you listen to stuff like early Death and Deicide.
Seven Churches is a transitional album - if it came out today it would probably be considered death-thrash but that was the missing link between thrash and death metal and it's well known that Chuck Schuldiner was inspired by it to turn the corner with what would become true death metal on Scream Bloody Gore.
Another album that was NOT a thrash album but that was a huge influence to black and death metal that a lot of people seem to overlook the influence of was Earth A.D. by Misfits - a lot of the more extreme second wave black metal stuff has its DNA all over it.
I don't see Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate, Motorhead or Venom as thrash. Bathory is ABSOLUTELY not thrash so I don't think any these bands albums would really fall under "Favorite THRASH Albums That Helped Influence Extreme Metal"

Reign in Blood - Slayer (1986)
Under The Sign of the Black Mark - Bathory (1987)
    Seven Churches - Possessed (1985)
    Pleasure to Kill- Kreator (1986)
    Regarding the discussion:
I never liked Darkness Descends. Its fast and heavy but I find it boring and nothing stands out.
Walls of Jericho is my favorite Helloween album.

I love thrash, but I'm not really a fan of Darkness Descends. I've tried. Lord knows I've tried. It just doesn't have enough melody for me. I have that problem with a lot of Gene Hoglan. Great technical drummer, but he just doesn't move me. I have similar issues with Demolition Hammer.
But I dig Kreator, Sacrifice, Sodom, Infernal Majesty, Repulsion, Onslaught, etc., etc.
