The 5 albums that came to mind first - IF I had to narrow it down - were "Kill 'Em All" by Metallica, "Taking Over" by Overkill, "The Ultra Violence" by Death Angel, "Reign in Blood" by Slayer, and "Darkness Descends" by Dark Angel. Obviously, there are several more, but those 5 are always at the top of the thrash heap for me.

Never forget hearing Kill 'Em All for the first time, i had just finished putting in a new car stereo in my Datsun pick up truck, which had a shell on the back and a carpet kit. I put house speakers back there, had a powerful amp and was now living the good life! A friend, " heavy metal Bob" who became pretty famous in the metal scene, had hipped me to Riot, Saxon, Armoured Saint and others, told me i had to get this album by Metallica (i thought the name was ridiculous!) so i picked it up and couldnt fathom how fast, relentless and uncompromising it was, the ten ton, granite riffs literally exploding from the sweaty speakers! I thought i was Mr. Heavy Metal, and then realizing AC/DC, Scorps and UFO, Sabbath and Ted Nugent, while still killer, were joined by a collosal behemoth spraying out wattage with seriously dangerous intentions! I was laughing upon first listen, Four Horsemen, Seek And Destroy, Motorbreath and Whiplash giving me an intense high, a huge burst of adrenaline. Played it for my stoner metal buddies, while we were burning some green in the back of my truck, house speakers ready for punishment, and all I saw were looks of complete astonishment, heard the words "no fucking way" over and over again, and then nothing but huge grins! It changed our musical lives, we didnt know this kind of speed and power was even possible, and in fact, a buddy commented that the sonics weren't real, he thought they had to be using special effects or something😁! I thank Heavy Metal Bob for his astute knowledge of all things metal - RIP BOB NALBANIAN.

Here are my top recommendations for beginners:
    1. Flotsam And Jetsam - Doomsday For The Deceiver (Very good vocals great for beginners to the genre)
    2. Anthrax - Spreading The Disease (Great vocals too good for beginners)
    3. Artillery - By Inheritance (Super vocals again)
Start with these 3 first if you can't get past the harsher vocals.
    4. Metallica - Master Of Puppets
    5. Megadeth - Rust In Peace
    6. Slayer - Show No Mercy
    7. Testament - The Legacy
    8. Annihilator - Alice In Hell
    9. Exodus - Bounded By Blood
    10. Pantera - Cowboys From Hell

this episode makes me yearn for a show on "obscure" 80's thrash bands...perhaps not "obscure" with "true" thrash fans, but some of those gems from that era...this show made me go back into my collection and re-listen to some of those releases...Iron Cross...Vacant Grave...Black Shepherd...Kublai Khan...Sonick Plague...Morbid Saint...Wrath...Flames...Morsure...Exumer...lots of bands that were just "one and done," but the limited output was just so cool. And speaking of Morbid Saint, they have a new one, released this year...it's pretty damn brutal. And of course there's Agent Steel...Acrophet...Atrophy...Cyclone...Sentinel Beast...Razor...Sacred Reich...I was what I considered the "perfect age" to be a thrash fan...I was buying all this stuff when it was "new" and "exciting," fascinated by the direction that "metal" was going...however, in the beginning of the 90s, being me, I found bands that were "pushing the envelope" even further in the burgeoning death metal scene, so I left thrash behind in favor of those much heavier death metal bands...but, yeah...an elongated (don't skimp us, Pete!) "obscure/underground/under-noticed" 80s thrash show would be excellent. At least an hour...and, please...NO co-host...unless you trust me to sit in the co-captain chair, that is...:0)

Great show Pete. You always set the framework in such a way where it's easy to follow. My personal favorites and recommendations will always be Metallica's 'Kill Em' All'. 'Ride the Lightning' and 'Master of Puppets'. Megadeth's 'Rust in Peace' and 'Peace Sells ...' follows. Just something out of the genesis of family Metallica that became so very special. I'm torn with Overkill. Your choice of 'Taking Over' is about the best choice for newbies. While 'The Years of Decay' in '89 has 'Elimination'. That song still drives me today. The whole Overkill catalogue is a must. I was on board with Anthrax early on and then they gave us Urban Thrash for what the band calls their roots. At that point I checked out. The Public Enemy collaboration was sheer blasphemous to me. To me that was as out of place as Ice-T and Black Sabbath with 'Illusion of Power'. Another good choice and for a Canadian such as myself a no-brainer would be Anvil's 'Metal on Metal' in 1982. 'March of the Crabs'. 'Mothra'. '666'. Close to six decades on this planet and Thrash is still part of me.

For people who want straight forward easy listening thrash:
    1. Metallica: Master of Puppets
    2. Testament: The New Order
    3. Megadeth: Peace Sells but Who"s Buying
    4. Overkill: Taking Over

If you are coming from punk here are some honorable:
    Nuclear Assult: Survive
    Carnivore: Retaliation
    Cromags: Best Wishes
    DRI: Crossover
Side note: This is quite the hot take but I would replace Rust in Peace with Peace Sells. Dave's vocals are at the most nasally on Rust which I hate, and the riffs and tone aren't as crushing as on Peace Sells. I also felt like Chris Poland's solos and style fit way better with Megadeth.

Nice breakdown of different forms of thrash! Picking between Peace Sells and Rust In Peace is like choosing a favorite child! @@treff9226 Poland was absolutely jazzy, idk if you’ve heard some of the actual fusion stuff he’s done, but it’s great. He’s got that fluid Holdsworth legato but has his own bluesy thing he throws in there, not to mention the crazy semitone bending stuff he does. Both Poland and Friedman are incredibly unique but personally I prefer Friedman’s playing outside of the constraints of Dave. Thrash beginners should:
Make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in the fully upright and locked positions.
Know where your oxygen masks are located.
Be aware of all emergency exits.
A neck brace, or two, makes good sense.
Thrash music kills less people than auto accidents.

  • @Swullmark
    @Swullmark 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

Thrash Metal is my favorite genre of metal, so this one is very special to me... with that said, I'm going to order these, not by year, but by accessibility for a newcomer (in my opinion)
#1 - Kill 'Em All: Metallica
The birth of Thrash to the wider audience, combining New Wave Of British Heavy Metal with Punk attitude, legends were born. It's accesible, fast and heavy while not being a deterrent to newcomers. Seek & Destroy, The Four Horsemen and Whiplash are Thrash at it's core.
#2 - Rust In Peace: Megadeth
From the opening riff of Holy Wars, this album is destined for greatness. Arguably one of the most iconic guitar riffs of all-time, Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, David Ellefson and Nick Menza made magic on this record. Flawless, and I cannot praise this record enough, it's so good, it transcends sub-genres.
#3 - The New Order: Testament
This is one of the albums that solidified my love for Thrash metal, the vocal melodies and choruses... catchy riffs, leads, phenomenal drumming, basswork, finished with great mixing and production. This is a MUST LISTEN for someone wanting to get into Thrash.
#4 - State of Euphoria: Anthrax
Fun, bounce-riff laden, goofy and unserious, tye-dye "pizza thrash" (fun, party stuff) Anti-Social is the most fun song that Thrash has Thrashed.
    #5 - Fabolous Disaster: Exodus
The true innovators of the Thrash Metal scene in the San Francisco Bay Area, Exodus created great chanting choruses with Toxic Waltz, Fabolous Disaster... and a cover of Low Rider? It's just a fun time all the way through, have at it!
#6 - Cowboys From Hell: Pantera
Cowboys From Hell, Domination, The Art Of Shredding, and Cemetery Gates. Need I say more? Beautiful melodies, heavy riffs, solos and leads from Dimebag Darrell bludgeoning drumming from Vinnie Paul, Rex Brown slamming on the bass guitar, and Phil Anselmo's emotion filled vocals with a Rob Halford esque sound to them... the last true greats of metal were born.
#7 - Seasons In The Abyss: Slayer
Slayer's Magnum Opus in my opinion, a true blend of the sheer speed and aggresion of Reign In Blood, with the darker, slower and menacing South of Heaven. This is personally my favorite Thrash album after Metallica's Ride The Lightning (given one album per band). It's also Slayer's most accessible album, with songs like Blood Red, War Ensemble, Spirit In Black, Dead Skin Mask and the title track, Seasons In The Abyss (the greatest Thrash song ever written?)... it's OUTSTANDING... and Dave Lombardo on drums, preach man.
    #8 - Agent Orange: Sodom
Tutonic Thrash perfection, it's ruthless, pure aggression with harsh, Slayer-esq vocals and a Testament / Slayer on steroids style of music... one of the meanest guitar tones ever put to a record, straight from Germany. Fucking phenomenal.
#9 - Beneath The Remains: Sepultera
Beneath The Remains opens up with the title track, and a pure Thrash rager at that (top #10 Thrash song imo, and shares an outro with the intro of Metallica's One?)... A Killer, brutal and fast Brazilian Thrash record, you can't go wrong.
#10 - Pleasure To Kill: Kreator
More akin to black metal than the Maiden or Priest influenced bay area scene. Gnarly, vicious, Venom-esque vocals over a bombardment of blistering fast guitars and chaotic drumming. This is the most extreme thing Thrash ever had a hand in, in my opinion
    Honorable Mentions:
    Painkiller: Judas Priest
No Place For Disgrace: Flotsam & Jetsam
    Killing Technology: Voivod
    Demilition Hammer: Tortured Existence
    Vio-Lence: Eternal Nightmare
    Forbidden: Forbidden Evil
    Heathen: Victims of Deception.
If you like any of these I'm happy to curate some suggestions for you!

Thanks for the tip on Carnivore, Pete! -- I never knew that Steele had an earlier band than Type O Negative. Great find! My two suggestions: as a late, but really meaningful addition to the genre roster, Annihilator, Never, Neverland. I know this is heresy, but to me this is the one album (same year) that beats Rust In Peace. You can't outdo Marty's work there, obviously, but to my ears NN boasts better production, has better overall songwriting consistency, and much stronger vocal presence. And also -- what happened to Voivod?? Or was that streak '86-'89 too proggy / odd to be included? Just saying :-)

@@seaoftranquilityprog You're right. I never think of Morbid Tales as an album but it certainly is highly influencial. I really hope that one day you' ll get to do an interview with the amazing Reed St Mark for the channel. Cheers.

@@purpletemple1 well, that's pretty easy to make happen as Reed and I go way back. He appeared on a CF episode a number of years ago actually!

@@seaoftranquilityprog Yes, that's why I mention it. I didn't know (or remember) he already appeared on the channel, but it would be awesome to hear from him again. He hasn't been the most productive musician, but the quality of his discography is impressive to say the least. Really miss his playing...

My playlist of thrash bands are the less thrashy stuff - Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, and Metal Church. I never really cared for what I heard by Slayer, but I suppose I should give it another try. Funny thing I have noticed on these videos. The honorable mention list continues to grow... Classic Heavy Metal - 0, Hard Rock - 1, Prog Rock - 3, Prog Metal - 5, Classic Rock - 9, and now Thrash - 10. LOL

I would really encourage you to give Slayer another chance. They slowed down a bit and added a lot of dimension and complexity with South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss. Just a great metal library for 5-8 albums (depending on taste).

So many of you listing crossover bands and Pantera in a thrash introduction list.

    • @Swullmark
      @Swullmark 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Pantera are post-thrash, with Cowboys leaning on standard Thrash. They, as well as crossover THRASH bands wouls count.
If we count death-thrash, prog-thrash, tec-thrash, etc etc then we have to include crossover and post-thrash.
      Pretty simple to understand

    • @damienfoyer
      @damienfoyer 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Creeping_Justice correct it is pretty simple. This is a thrash list for beginners. Not a post-thrash list. Not a groove metal, hard rock, glam metal etc list. Those other thrash sub genres you listed do not have a place on the list.

@@damienfoyer an introduction to a genre incluedes its sub-genres. Everything fits into a sub-genre... by your take, Pete shouldn't have mentioned anything outside of the Bay Area and NY scenes. No Destruction, Sodom, etc etc.
      It doesn't work like that.
As an introduction to rock music I'd give someone both an SRV album and an AC/DC album, you can further guide your listening that way by establishing your likes and dislikes. Maybe someone won't like the stuff Metallica or Overkill put out, but would love Sodom and Kreator but dont know they exist because "thrash" was given to them as one basic section
