How to connect EGO power station to WIFI | Why it's a struggle | Troubleshooting

  • We troubleshoot the process of connecting the EGO nexus portable power station to a WIFI network to connect and use with the EGO mobile app.
    In short, the steps are:
    1) Create WIFI network that operates exclusively on the 2.4 GHz Band
NOT 5 GHz Preferred, NOT BAND steering, Not 5 GHz Priority, etc etc
    2) Connect your phone to the 2.4 GHz network you created
    3) Open your EGO App
    4) Select your PowerStation
    5) Connect to it via Bluetooth
    6) Once connected via bluetooth, hit the WIFI button for the nexus power station in the EGO app to start the WIFI setup process
    7) Hold down the Gear Icon on the Nexus Power station for 4 seconds
    8) Enter the password for the 2.4 GHz WIFI network you created in the EGO app
    9) Let it attempt to connect
You may have to run this setup process more than once if it doesn't work, but shouldn't exceed 3 attempts.
    Hope this helps!

UPDATE: I found an old Galaxy tab S3 that has Android 9. Both bluetooth and wifi work just fine with the Ego Power+ app on Android 9 and 10. The Ego Power+ app does not work properly with Android 12 at this time. I have been stonewalled by Ego support about this for months, but I finally got concrete proof with testing on my own this morning.

I can get Blue Tooth to connect sometimes on Android 12 but nothing on 13. No luck at all with WiFi on Android 12. Thanks for the info, I will try to downgrade an old unused phone to Android 11. Ego app won't even load on Android 8. A friend could connect with iPhone 11 on Bluetooth but we did not try Wi-Fi

Thanks for the video. For me, I had to connect to a Wifi network that was only broadcasting 2.4ghz. The network I was connecting to is a dedicated IoT network so that was fine for the types of devices. It is a hidden SSID though so it does not need to be visible. I was on an iPhone 13 Pro Max but not sure if that makes any difference.

I've tried working with Ego support about this. I first got my Ego Powerstation in December. I had a Galaxy Note 10+ on Android 11 at the time. Bluetooth worked, but wifi didn't. I called Ego support about this. They couldn't figure out either, but advised that I get a replacement. The replacement did the same thing. They advised me to get another replacement. The 2nd replacement did the same thing. In January, they released version 2.2.0 of their app. The app would crash when attempting to connect to Bluetooth and wifi still did not work. I called Ego about this and they said they eventually said were working on new version of the app. I left it alone for a while then called back in late February. They were trying to blame the issue on my router. I went back and installed 8 older versions of the app to compare and discovered that the "Nearby Devices" permission was not present on the app. They added that permission back in version 2.2.1 less than 24 hours later, but bluetooth and wifi still would not connect. Ego had me ship one of the 2 units I had at the moment back to them for testing. They successfully tested with a Galaxy S9 on Android 10, but refused to do any further testing with Android 11 or 12. Ego is now refusing any further support related to this. So I think I'm out of luck.
I've tried 4 different routers broadcasting on 2.4GHz, including a wifi hotspot on two different phones, and 3 different Android phones on Android 11 and 12. Their app has issues that they don't want to admit to.

What is the phone you're using? I have an android go edition that's not compatible with ego power+ app. I bought a moto G Play, it was the same thing...not compatible. I just bought an Ego 52" riding mower and am bot able to connect for firmware updates.

Sorry man. But I tried this a number of times. My EGO app doesn't even have any kind of indicator that says "CONNECT." Nothing. No indicator that shows wifi or Bluetooth. I registered the product, I have shut down my phone numerous times, and I have deleted and reinstalled the ap. Nothing. Your video did not work for me...but it probably wasn't your fault. What more can I do?>

I think the Nexus can only connect to the network you phone is connected to. So, you're communicating the network name and password to the Nexus (based on which network phone happens to be connected to) via bluetooth. You just need to make sure you give it the correct password. I don't think it has anything to do with 2.4G vs 5G.

    • @4thewinak
      @4thewinak  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It’s definitely true the nexus can only connect to the network your phone is connected to. But every time I attempted to set up on 5 GHz it always errored. Not sure if it’s just my device or network. But that was the case.
It’s actually almost impossible to mess up The connecting to the network mainly because during the set up and ask you for the password to the network your phone is connected to.

I have an Orbi RBR50 (mesh network) and still unable to connect. Ego customer service was not much help. Is frustrating to spend this amount of money and to not have this work properly. I have other smart plugs that use 2.4 ghz which I had no problem setting up.

Are you connected to the power station via Bluetooth, and phone is connected to the same 2.4 ghz network?
Your phone maybe connected to the 5ghz band of your network.
If anything you could try making another network for specifically only for 2.4 and try it on that

Currently, the Ego Power+ app for Android only works properly with Android 8.1 - 10. If you have Android 11, bluetooth will work, but wifi won't. With Android 12, neither bluetooth or wifi will work. You can use an Android 8.1 - 10 device to connect the Nexus Powerstation to bluetooth/wifi, then open the app on Android 11/12 and see that it is connected to wifi and view stats.

I reported the issue with bluetooth crashing on version 2.2.0. The reason it was crashing was because the "Nearby Devices" permission wasn't present in that version. They added the permission back in version 2.2.1, but Android 11 and 12 still won't connect via wifi. Android 11 will connect to bluetooth, but Android 12 will not.
On the current app version (2.2.2), it only works properly with Android 8.1 - 10. If you have Android 11, bluetooth works, but wifi does not. If you have Android 12, wifi and bluetooth do not work. If you use an Android 8.1 - 10 device, you can connect it to bluetooth/wifi, and then open the app on Android 11 or 12 and see that it is connected to wifi and see stats.

@@CableZL their support is worthless, I went back and forth with them for months after having issues with the little Nexus unit, basically it's complete garbage and have 220v voltage spikes, fried a $100 fan and they would do nothing, I went through 4 units and spoke to an engineer, they are aware it's garbage and said they may decide to improve it in a future version, but still continue to sell the damaging dangerous version and won't fix it, unreal

Faulty app. Attempt to connect to new Ego Power Station. After product registration App connects to online account okay. From app, attempt Bluetooth or WiFi (2.4 or 5ghz) connection crashes on Samsung phone Android 12, 11 & I believe 10. Connects via Bluetooth only on Galaxy Tab 5e Android 11 but not via wifi. For the few grands $$$ spent on Ego infrastructure, we are served this steamy pile of Crap. (Yes, location and storage are enabled for the app).
Attempted connection of Rapid charger, which does not support Bluetooth, only wifi, and it connects using 2.4ghz but only on the phone and not the tablet.
It's a mix and match game with wifi on the power station not working at all.
When I can connect, the firmware is green checkmark as latest.
