I drew a friends favorite character for fun. And she asked if she could buy it from me and when I told her I can just give it to her for free she still insisted on paying I never felt so touched in my entire life
In my Irish culture that's insulting what your friend did. I would have disowned her so she wouldn't get the Irish curse when I had a friend like that. The last I had one did that to me,, she died a week later and my father's friend always died when they did that to him.
I get how it feels but honestly I think that it’s not a good way to think . Yes . The question is stupid but they’re just trying to talk to you and learn about what you’re doing . Striking up a conversation isn’t always easy and sometimes we just need to accept the scuff like this
This video made me realize a stupid contradiction. “Dont be an artist, you’ll starve” “no, i wont pay! A real artist does it for the love of their craft.” This applies to gigging musicians too. I guess its less a contradiction and more that people feed into that cycle.. “dont do this, youll go broke- anyway, i dont value your work as work”
exactly. sometimes it may be due to stereotyping and forcing an image on an entire career path just based on some people's perception of a handful of individuals they may have come across who chose those career paths, but were having a rough time ( which literally happens in every other career path)
@@MohammedAgbadi yeah.. I think creative careers, especially ones where youre not working for a big company/studio, have that perception but way overblown. I once had a family friend see my art and literally tell me “wow, this is so good! Maybe you’ll be one of those masters that gets famous after they die!” Sure, I love the craft, but damn. I think people mean well but their delivery sucks.
What's ironic is the fact that most of the things that brings entertainment etc. for those kind of people had to be drawn/designed/written by an artist. Clothes, buildings, furniture, books and covers for them, comics, cartoons, toys, vehicles, packages designs for food and drinks, storyboards for movies and tv shows, consoles & phones designs, soundtracks, literal games and many more... If it weren't for artists, they wouldn't have a lot of cool things and yet they still live in that delusion that it can't be a high payable job.
@@assgremlin its less that it “cant” be high-paying, and more that many believe it *shouldnt* be high-paying. They dont see it as work or a job, unless youre doing it for a big company for blizzard or being a graphic designer or something more “official/job-y” Instead of simply taking it for granted, they believe that artists shouldnt make a living “just for being good drawers, get a real job” because if you dont “contribute to society” in the high-brow white collar way they imagine, youre just making money for being lazy.
Not really. I've been into craftong, amd selling handmade items. Even then it is hard to get people to pay , at least a fsir price. However, they are happy to bust their bankaccount open for massproduced things. Often made in plastic and are waaaay overpriced.
@@Linnzy I think any type of trade really. I notice some areas are slowly being recognised like where I live, people are starting to respect seamstresses and nail tech and cosmotolgoists. but man did it take some time.
Oh boy, you really need to look at what people do to the pixel art community then. We get more flak than other digital artists, I got family who despises my works because "it is outdated" even though painting predates pixel art by thousands of years (*rubs cave painting photos in enemy's faces*), and yet they keep poking the proverbial fucking bear, and I am going to start acting like an enraged one with rabies soon...
I used to have people tell me “___ can draw better than you,” whenever I show my art to people, lol. I imagine they also say this when they’re mad they’d have to pay, too, if they want you to draw something for them.
@@pheenixgryphon7857 yep, it’s hilarious because people were belittling manga artist saying they don’t deserve as much money as people who draw realism, when I could bet most manga artist can draw pretty realistically

A kid in my class said he could draw better than me so i handed him my ipad and pen and dared him to try and finish the snake i was drawing all he did was draw two lines tracing what i already made 😂
If anyone tells me that, I'll just tell them "At least I draw better than you." (unless that person is also a rly good artist then i'm just not gonna say anything)

This is so true, especially with my family, I'm drawing just some random dude and my mom is like "omg is tha your brother? ". She's so sweet but it aleays mkes me laugh lmao
The "who is that" question bothers me so much. 9 times out of 10 I'm drawing an oc or something, and when anyone asks I get excited but then they'll just nod like they're pretending to care. Now I'll just go "oh, just some... random guy. Definitely not someone who I've been crafting a story for during the last 5 years."
AYO I FELT THIS SO HARD. That's why whenever I draw ANY OC, Ill have a mini summary of their existence in mind, just in case someone asks about them. I don't want to explain their whole background because I KNOW THEY WONT LISTEN 😤
Bruh I feel attacked. My primary OC was conceived around the latter half of 2018 when I was still in Senior High School. I started off with a Novel involving him for a school project but wanted to flesh him out better, and ironically enough, in some fanfics of my favorite stories.
@@GabrielTobing Seems like we're on the same boat. Luckily enough, I have no plans of abandoning my OCs/stories planned though it's hard enough to have energy to do them when your environment is wack and a kinda lack of equipment
I just died from the "being an artist isn't a real job" part. I've heard people tell me that ever since I was in kindergarten, knowing my passion for it. I graduated university and I regret ever listening to them. I felt like I belonged in those few art courses I did take.
My classmate's mom says that to her since she draws lots of anime. And she's really good at it. It's kinda sad since her mom will support her if she only drew REALISTICALLY. :( That's why I'm really thankful my mom supports my art even though I'm not the best. :D
I feel you 😭 I too regret wasting my year not doing art when there's an industry level artist living 2 blocks away from my house doing art course, wtf 😭😭😭
You can still do art though, if you have a passion still do it anyways. Granted I do my art and stuff on the side till I’ve got a decent profile built up
Feel you, I did go to an art school but droped out because of the constant pressure. The school was 2h and a half away by train each way for 4h classes and we had a shit ton of homework so it was already difficult but my parents saying shit like "you're wasting your time, won't find a job, you draw only the same (I was doing a comic art course so 90% was human anatomy study)" after the long days for a year was too much.
“A real artist does it for the love of their craft!” Ah yes, and a real farmer spends days out in his fields, working his butt off, only to give his crops away for free because he loves working with plants. The AUDACITY of some people.
I feel like comparing it to a florist and/or landscaper is more apt. nobody undervalues the products of farmers because its. tangible objective crop. but a florist or landscaper? oh, you made some plants look pretty (shrug) people forget that art is like using people’s eyes to hack their brains. they write off creative pursuits as decorative or some form of useless luxury. but they disregard that understanding and being able to make visual crafts also enhances utility applications, too. and that art is intrinsic to humanity and even nature.
@@EweOlive the whole point is that no one would say this about a farmer...a comparison to things people would say the same thing about is the opposite of an apt comparison...
One of my worst experiences that trapped me into realism "What are you drawing?" "A cat." "Doesn't look like a cat, cat's don't have *insert a bunch of purposefully dramatized features that were added.*"
My best friend went down the same path of being pressured into drawing realism or semi realism. She now draws in a more cartoonish/children's book style and I can tell she is much happier with it. If you want to change your direction in art you can do so at any time. Don't let anyone ruin what you love doing c:
I specifically drew some bean animal characters of mine in a "realistic/semi-realistic" style just to shove it in people's faces so they'll go away. Oh, you don't like my fat bean hamster with a constant :D face that has to be carried around in a basket by an equally fat bird? That sucks. Have this stupid "realistic" hamster that I referenced from a stock image I guess, since you're basically a stock human being anyway.
Nobody's ever told me to draw in a realistic style but I felt like I had to because of those art tutorials on Instagram. I now just realized that I liked my past work way more than my current work because it feels so much more creative. I'm going back to the cartoons style.
NOO BECAUSE ONE TIME I SHOWED MY DAD A DRAWING OF A RAT IN A CLOWN SUIT AND HE SAID EXACTLY THIS CRAP FOR AN HOUR STRAIGHT ITS A RAT IN A CLOWN SUIT IM NOT AIMING FOR REALISM HERE
I always experience this “Can you draw me?” “Draw this for free for me?” In the dms, and they’re the one who’s gets mad after I say no. Dude, entitled people amirite Bruh, I feel like whenever someone or anyone who see’s an artist who are minding their own business, immediately ignores the term “personal space”
bruh! i have this crazy story time lmaooo i might make it a video. this super popular ig model sent me a dm last year to make some free art for her clothing brand in exchange for "exposure"
@@MohammedAgbadi just Instagram stuff, “make me a drawing that’s like made in 30 hours to 25 mins and I’ll give you a shoutout okay boo?” Boy oh boy, I hate it
The not finishing WIPs one is dead on. Starting a new drawing is like starting a new Skyrim character. You go in with so many cool ideas and plans then completely ditch it and start a new character lmao.
Oh my god my mom always tell me "Why are you still drawing cartoons? Draw something realistic instead" like bruh, do you expect me to draw something realistic to a person with a cartoony artstyle who's planning to be a cartoonist?? I can't even draw anime!
@@GwenKalash that sounds really rough. Even some the most experienced artists don’t draw realistically. It sounds infuriating to have people down talking your hard work just because it’s not what they want

“Being an artist isn’t a real job, what else do you wanna be?” I was told this as a kid and it fucking destroyed me. Thanks random mom who I never talked to again, my artistic confidence was permanently ruined because of you.
Honestly I never understood it. I don't think I was ever told that, but if I was, I would tell them that people at pixar or animation studios make money or have a job as the artist. Its what I would say as a kid.
i mean if you don't work at big studios like pixar, illumination, disney ect.. you're fucked because most other studios won't pay well and treat you like shit
I been told this as well " being artist cant feed you, it just a waste of time and money. Be just like this instead *insert random job* " I completely lost interest for art because of that. But i am slowly getting back to it
An extra one from my experience at an art college... The second any math is involved, everyone's brains just shut down. I feel like we artists have this natural aversion to math
I am an artist who likes math, and I think I'm pretty decent at it. Except anything involving triangles and whatnot. They are evil personified, and I will not take any other opinion into consideration
That one I can kind of understand. If someone paints we call them a painter, sculpts we call them a sculptor, makes pots we call them a potter, inks we call them an inker. So, what do you call someone who draws? Artist is a very broad term encapsulating a range of disciplines. Draughtsperson sounds like you do technical and engineering drawings. Sketcher seems to denigrate the work, and may get confused with the shoes. Pencilist? Drawer at least has some logic behind it.
gotta love how one half of the population will say you should pick a "real" job because "you can't make a living off of being a creator", but then the other half will ask for free art because we "shouldn't be greedy" about our work.
that's probably why you can't make money. it's the same person that doesn't want to pay and thus makes you feel like you are worthless. so then maybe you would give it for free.
Yea because being an artist could mean being a nail tech, a chocolatier, a candy maker, a hair dresser, wedding makeup artist. Heck even a late foam barista, all those art things are real jobs
I think another thing would be people constantly pressuring you to draw a certain way like my family telling to draw more realistically but i cant do realism very well (I'm definitely trying to work on that) and they know this. It kinda just brings down my mood, especially when I'm in the middle of drawing.
I know right! My mom always say "Why do you keep drawing cartoons? Draw something realistic instead" I can't even draw anime and she's expecting me to draw very realistic proportional people--
Yeah realism isn’t my thing either. It’s always more fun to draw in a cartoony sort of style. You can make characters more expressive and which is something that just can’t work with realism.
"A real doctor wouldn't ask for money. They'd do it for the love of healing!" "A real teacher should teach because they love children, not because they're hungry for money!" "A real lawyer should be hungry for justice, not money!" "A real plumber should have a passion for pipes, not cash!" Weird how that's somehow "unreasonable"
My mom used to (and still does) press the fact that I draw anime or used to, when, I don’t, I was 9 at the time when I liked that. For some reason, she wants me to continue with it, I’ll never know why since I’ve gained so many skills without it 🌝
Same, my mother still calls me when she sees an anime on Netflix and immediately goes "You should draw one of the animoos you watch!", even though it's been ages since I've last touched one.
@@pczb2692 exactly. I haven’t even watched an anime in my life fully yet she insists upon me drawing in the style and refuses bring up art or me drawing when anime is a conversation topic, like, you can’t even draw a face, stop it
Yeah ! l agree because they think they can draw on their supplies thinking it can magically make their art good when it's not and plus improving takes time
OH MY GOD- They always tell me "Hey I wanna draw, can you rip out a page from your sketchbook?" And they don't even finish their drawing and crumple it up and ask me for another one because they hated their art because it's not in my art level That is just a waste of paper
yea. I just straight up say no. I got to a point where I just got fed up. I tell them if I need to explain (like some teacher or something) that I paid a lot of money and I don't want to lend you my stuff since you don't know how to handle them. especially if you just want a scrap paper or some crap. and don't even think about touching my markers. if I had a drawing tablet, that's just a straight up no. like never. I don't lend people expensive things
"A real artist draws for the love of the craft" Yeah, when I draw things for myself, it's because I love being able to create something I enjoy, with my own interpretation, and I don't have to appeal to anyone but myself. When I draw things /for you/, pay up lol
I had this happen to me a lot. I like drawing at work during my break, but lately i stopped because everyone wants to see what I'm doing, or wants to see my drawings, but i don't want to show them. I also mainly to draw stylized art, and they get disappointed i don't draw realism.
Wait, you guys finish stuff? I feel like it's one of those cases of having a certain image in your head, about how the finished artwork will look like, but it either doesn't get there quickly enough, or you get sidetracked/lose motivation midway through.
Whenever I learn sth new -however small or big- i pick an unfinished piece and try to test out the newly acquired info and truth be told that is how I finish most of them 😂😂😂
"Can you draw me?" "Sure, my commission rates start at $80 USD :)" Usually that stops them in their tracks but I have actually gotten a commission out of doing that!
I’ve actually taken up the challenge s few times when I was in school with classmates who asked, I tried, they tried once then gave up and moved on. It feels so disingenuous, like they expected to be good or even better as me with just one “lesson” from someone who is like you said still teaching myself lmao. And their interest in it only lasts a second, if you wanted to learn anything then you would need to continue to practice. That’s also what I always say when they just immediately give up, “you need to practice, and then I guarantee you WILL improve!” But they want to be Picasso as soon as they pick up the pencil Bruh.
8:37 As an accounting student who's also trying to draw, DRAWING IS MUCH HARDER TO LEARN. With accounting I just have to find the books, read them and then practice some questions until it's drilled into my skull. But with Art, I have to learn specific fundamentals, then apply them in different ways for different styles, then combine those fundamentals in a way that doesn't look bad and then practice all of that 100x as much!!
I remember when I was on high school and was showing my sketchbook to someone, and she just went over one of my OCs and asked me "is this you?" even if we look nothing alike, just based off my OC and me sharing the same birthday lol Edit: also wow, it's crazy that anime is so popular now, back on the day people were giving me weird looks for drawing anime and not realistic stuff as if you were only an artist if you didn't draw cartoony stuff
Yes!! People used to always ask if I was drawing "cartoons" while I was in the throes of my weeaboo phase 😭 Now I draw semi realism and people ask me if I watch bnha
I love to draw hands, not on their own but as part of a character. Hands feel like part of the face to me since they are so expressive, I really enjoy capturing the right pose of a hand to describe a mood.
@@dreamingahopefuldream4439 Aren't you arrogant? Is it really so wrong for someone to take an interest in something skillful? Some people have never drawn before or taken time to, so when they see others giving it a shot, they want to see and ask about it. It's friendly human nature. Even I do this as an artist besides asking for free art. You are a very rude person. In college we were forbidden to use anime art styles for art class (as in, teachers didn't want us copying styles from specific animes and such). Last year my final project was a comic and a classmate started complaining to the teacher that he was being biased because he liked me and 3 others that had also done either illustration or comic related projects and we shouldn't have a grade because we were drawing anime. It is sad when someone thinks everything that is either simplified or cartoony is anime, it is even more sad when it comes from someone who IS an art student.
Worse when it's an art teacher thinking everything anime/manga is simplistic. The short version of my story: Art teacher sees older kid's badly copied anime, and bans anime/manga/anything not considered art history tbh for my year onwards. Despite literally winning every competition the teacher set, and being the teacher's fave... no manga project for me. Technical drawing (precision graphics such as architecture, packaging and logo design etc) teacher sees me drawing manga in my free time, compliments it and copies a detailed image as an example for me. Ended up making a manga inspired project for that teacher's class, while I got forced into tedious level realism for my art class.
Whenever people ask "Is that anime?????" when the art clearly isn't in an anime/manga style is really annoying. Anime art style comes in all forms, some have more realistic features and some more cartoony with exaggerated eyes/features/etc. As someone who draws in an anime style its annoying to hear other styles boxed into the same category.
It was worse when I had a high school art teacher who said everything- even normal cartoon styles, was anime all cause they didn’t draw realistic like her 🙄
This used to annoy me but I think what annoys me more is how we seperate Japanese cartoons and comics and western ones when they both have the same influences and styles within them. They're all CARTOONS and it doesn't matter what part of the world it comes from. All that type of thinking does is stops people mixing, matching and making something new out of what's already out there. In the end, you just got to let it go and just except people just want to label things even when it's unnecessary.
My family was always very keen to brag about my "drawing skills" but wouldn't actually be enthusiastic about it when I would show them haha. Great way to build up a child's confidence. So yeah, I've given up on showing people my art or chasing an art career now.
14:13 This actually hits back home so hard. I left my friends after they were like this to me. Drawing was one of my only productive outlets, and I loved it, enjoyed and it kept me sane in 2020 and everything that was going on in my personal life.
If a child is failing a subject they don't need to be scolded they need help. There was a girl in one of my math classes that fell into the category of not understanding anything and just failing math, but at the end of the year she said that the only thing she actually understood all year was the pythagorean theorem because she sat next to me and I helped her understand it. From my experience no kid is stupid, just needs to be taught differently, or needs support in ways that help them cope with the ways their brain works differently from the "norm."
Creative majors: game design, creative writing, film, art were like double maybe even triple the amount of work compared to my other classes when I attended my university. Like sure we didn’t have finals, or midterms, but having weekly projects is not any easier. It was like we had finals every week. Creative work is work, and it usually takes anywhere from 3-8 hours for small projects, let alone the days of work for larger projects.
To be fair, some people can't form images in their "mind's eye", and just see nothing when they try to imagine. For me, I "imagine" as a list of nebulous traits and vibes of arrangement of these traits without seeing anything, and it takes practice to be able to get it into a cohesive image. I often need to sketch things out to know exactly what I'm trying to imagine lmao.
The 'drawer' mistake is rather common for people who don't speak English as their first language. After having learned so many job names that end in -er, such as 'teacher' for someone who teaches or 'writer' for someone who writes, we're most likely going to think 'drawer' is someone who draws. Especially if you're never taught furniture names besides 'bed', 'table' and 'chair' like me.
I've never been so glad to admit I NEVER DRAW HUMANS. And I always leave the more....grotesque drawings for when I'm out and about. "What is that?" "Oh, that's my Flesh Eating Beetles concept, complete with a half-stripped down corpse..."
I personally have been working in animation as a storyboard artist for 24 years. When I am between jobs, I'll sometimes go a local coffee shop and sketch and people watch. I enjoy the attention and it often causes good conversation. I know many artists are Introverts but it's really good to come out of your shell. Drawing publically can actually create Work opportunities. I guess that's just me. ☺️
Last year I visited a Kim Jung Gi exhibition I was very very lucky to meet him there. He did live drawing in front of visitors and allowed to ask questions while drawing. He made a mistake and said "I also do mistakes while I draw, but I try to hide them by inserting them into the whole picture naturally". And I think that is a great advice how to cope with the mistakes, especially if you ar drawing with pens/ink/some other non erasable material
When I started going to public school when I was 12, I was SOOO sick of people asking me to teach me how to draw. So for the next 3 or 4 years, if someone asked me to teach them how to draw, I'd always respond with "okay! what do you want me to show you first?" They'd either immediately chicken out or give up a few steps in. Out of all the people I did this to, ONE. ONLY ONE of those people is still drawing to this day. One of my best friends in the entire world. She just recently graduated college with a degree in graphic arts. It has taken me over a literal decade to get to a point where I can tell at a glance who to say yes or no to when they ask me to draw them something. I can literally tell by how they're looking at me or what type of friend they are whether or not they'll be patient with me, if they understand they are expected to pay full price, etc.
The can you draw me part always happens to me especially at school, you can just be chilling and drawing anything and everyone will gather around you the feeling actually very awkward especially when the compliments start coming in😂😂
I'm not a professional artist but I totally understand that feeling when someone says 'Can you draw me?'. I'm not entirely that mad at the idea but when they get pushy, I also get unmotivated to draw them, I get a slump lol.
i actually love drawing hands, and during art class i would try and incorporate hands into all of my assigned pieces. when i tell my artist friends about this they basically call me a masochist 😭 but i really just love drawing people and hands are one of the most interesting and expressive parts of the human body.
@@TheRealKingKoor ahh yes! I love Horikoshi's thoughts about drawing hands. I remember him saying that they're the most expressive body part other than the face and I totally agree.
I just wanted to say that I love that you added a transcription of what you are saying! I'm not an English nor American native, so your accent is kinda tricky for me - but the translation is making your voice completely clear!
I'm not in a religious school but I still worry some heavily religious people will be upset with my art because half of what I draw is demon people. It hasn't happened yet though.
I had this friend who always said "oh you're so good at art, I can't draw at all" and it annoyed me soo much. One time she asked me if I could teach her how to draw, and I said I could show her the basics, but than she would have to practice to get better. After I showed her, she got annoyed because what she drew didn't look perfect right away and she never drew again.
My parents would always say that I could do art as a hobby on the side of my “real job” because it wasn’t a “real job”, meanwhile they’re watching an extremely successful show with lots of character creation and cgi 😫
There’s this one thing that keeps happening to me when they see my drawing, which is they ALWAYS ask “how long does that take?”. And I’m like, what would be the best answer. If I answer, “oh I started this morning” then they’re like “huh. I guess it doesn’t take that long.” Like it seemed like a simple thing? Like I kinda get hurt when they make it sound so easy? But then sometimes I answer “oh well I started like two or three days ago” and they’re like “wth omg it takes *that* long?” And it sounds like they’re saying ‘ it took you so long to draw such an easy thing’. Now I’m like- confused-
I exclusively draw at home because people looking at or commenting on my unfinished art - that looks like crap because it's unfinished - makes me really uncomfortable
Yeah I do the same unless I know the people around me also have an appreciation for art. Even if I don’t make a mistake, it does feel a bit awkward to start a drawing. Of course it’s not going to look good when I just began, but I feel like I can’t continue just because I feel like I’m trying to gain approval I didn’t want in the first place
Everyone I know is always weirded out when they know I do art for a living, but the most extreme case was my grandpa, he could just not understand that drawing can be a job... even though he is a retired musician. He is a very devote catholic and was even praying that my line of work was in the path of the Lord (whatever that means, because his music is not religious in any way).
I had a friend who kept asking "Can you draw me riding a unicorn?" And anytime I said I wasn't sure what I wanted to draw she would be like "Me riding a unicorn??" It made me want to implode tbh
Another thing that's annoying is "are you drawing yourself? Is that you?". Do I really look like a blue skinned person with no eyes? I guess aliens are real then. Where's the paparazzi? How am I even drawing if I can't see? I know blind people exist but..?
I had a class mate tell me in a patronizing way that im such a good artist and is so brave for doing so and not let my disability get in my way from making art. Im autistic and we have to make a fake movie poster. I made a poster kinda personal where it be about the life of an autistic person in their point of view. I don't know how autism makes you not an artist and then a miracle when you have the talent. Im autistic, not blind and armless. This is mostly a disability pet peeve, but I guess its still counts for all artists with some kind of disability
As an artist that grew up in Ethiopia, I had a different experience. 1. Drawing was a rarely seen skill, especially in the schools I went to. So it actually made me feel special and unique from everybody. 2. Anime was not well known, the only anime I ever drew was Dragonball Z characters since that was the only anime I knew existed. The rest of the time was sonic, archie, garfield or my own characters. 3. The phrase people gave me whenever they see my finished work made me feel good. Which I only much later realized has stunted my road to improvement because I have never once had a good art teacher before I went to college and online drawing tips did not exist. 4. But yeah! I totally got the "Can you draw me?" question. I only remember 6 times it happening though.
In traditional art, I just mostly draw eyes. When my cousin sees it and he says, “Are those anime eyes?” I think it is a bit confusing and kinda annoying. I love anime but like I don’t want my art style to be compared to it.
I had a choice to make in school, graphic arts or auto mechanic. I actually said to myself there's no money in being an artist unless you are super amazingly great at it. Today I'm a licenced mechanic. I also made 300 pages of comics and half were published.
@@dragonskunkstudio7582 I don't feel that might be comparable. I feel art is a far different skill to build from a practical learning experience like mechanics. that being said, it's great you can do both.
i hate when people ask me to draw them the most: 1: out of all the things in the world you could ask me to draw, you pick yourself...are you that vein 2: i don't want to insult you if the drawing doesn't come out great 3: pictures take time to draw, time is precious, most charge for theirs 4: i don't even draw myself because i personally find realism boring unless it's realism that is based on the unreal.
Uff, the one with the phrase: _"You're so talented, I can't draw a sticky person"_ . Well, I'm drawing, learning and practising for 30 years, maybe just try it out! I also started with really creepy and horrible drawings, but it get's better with time and all of the above!
I relate to so many of these. It’s really annoying sometimes when some people say “can you draw me”.Like I wanna work on my own artwork, not draw you.🧍🏻♀️
The ones that ask about anime do it because their second question is always "Can you draw X, that's my favorite character!". 🙄 There was this guy in college that kept pestering me to paint him as a Jedi knight with oils! I guess he thought he was being clever because he kept suggesting that he can come over whenever to model for me, so he would get a free painting and maybe something would happen between us when he was "modeling" for me. Ugh, 🤮🤮🤮 there was no way I wanted to be in a room alone with this guy(for some reason he kept mentioning that his back was hairy and if that was okay. WHAT??? May I remind you that he wanted a painting of himself as a Jedi knight, why the heck would his hairy back matter???) 🤮🤮🤮. After I told him I don't really paint with oils he thought he was clever and said that it would be good practice for me, like he was doing me a favor. FFS.
geez that's just gross. that hair back comment would be my ticket to give him a mean no. and tell his gross hip to never talk to me again. that's a boundary crossed in my book. a huge red flag and the perfect reason to be "mean" aka being firm
As an artist i actually don’t mind when people ask me “woah did you draw that?” Or if they look at me draw. it actually makes me feel good because it tells me that im actually good at drawing and that the negative voices in my head are actually completely wrong. Though sometimes i get carried away looking at others draw and forget other artists don’t like it when people watch them draw 😅 Edit: i never knew asking other artists to teach me how to draw was a bad thing 😭
Everyone I know has asked me what art style I’m going to focus on in college. I have never mentioned anything involving doing art for a minor/major in college. Actually I’m into sciences, but people see me drawing and assume.every.single.time.
Me as a person who can't color even if my life depended on it (but still studying how). I get the "You should finish it, it will look nicer" or "Can I color your drawings?" or "Can you make a coloring book for my kid?" ok the last one I do that sometimes for free because you can't say no to your nephews and god children, but the others, I hate those questions a lot.
@@karlmark9967 Ouch. I personally texture a _shit ton_ so I rarely get those kind of responses. However getting the opposite where people say "it will look better if you draw a sketch for it" on _art without a single line_ is pretty annoying ngl
I never understood the “when people look at your art you get annoyed “ thing . Cus like… I really don’t mind in fact I love it. It means that my work is good and that I’m on the right path . Also if I draw then obviously I want people to see it . Although I do understand if people get too nosy and disrupt your workflow but in that case just politely ask them to stop. Another point I want to make is that when people ask some honestly stupid questions you need to understand that they are just trying to converse and don’t know how to strike up the convo. Like me an artist wouldn’t know what to say to start a conversation with a carpenter or an artist of a different medium. I think people are just going too with this honestly.
To me, having someone look at what I’m drawing as I’m drawing it just makes me stressed. It’s a lot of pressure since I’m trying harder than before to not make mistakes. I might even erase a doodle completely because I’m embarrassed about it
@@that1sprig I get that and it’s totally fine but I don’t think it’s a ground to say that others are annoying for looking at it or that asking questions is irritating. ( I’m talking in a general sense , I’m sure you don’t do these things)
Omg lol the one that gets on my nerves is "You're a amazing drawer" like......THATS NOT CORRECT ENGLISH but I love watching your videos there so peaceful and it's nice seeing African American ppl be successful and great artist. Also I been looking at your art tips and it helps so much!! Also I have a question have you consider doing animation?
Thank you so much 😀 i have peered into animation from afar and it seems a bit scary lmaoo. i'm more comfortable doing character designs and expression sheets, but who know i might try it out later down the line. i'm always up for a challenge
Anyone else love drawing hands?? I think hands are so expressive and the way characters move them and how they use them when they talk is always so fun for me to draw
if you draw them man cheeks in public then who ever asks you to draw them bust have some cake haha. all jokes aside the draw me question is definitely something I heard so many times .
This is soooooo reallll. My friend is always like “is that anime” like no. It is not. (No hate to anime artists) there can be other styles besides anime and realism. Also, ppl are always like “who is that???” A character I made, not a self portrait, not you, and not a celebrity. Like it’s not that hard to understand 😅
I always find it easier to draw when there’s no one around me. I can’t be embarrassed if no one is around to judge any character or mistake I make. I can actually focus when someone isn’t looking over my shoulder. There’s just a lot more pressure overall if someone is watching me draw
Unpopular opinion: I LOVE drawing hands. I look up common hand poses like fists and get reference images. This doesn't mean I'm good at drawing them...
Always enjoy your videos! this one was really funny. could you do a video on tips to not compare yourself with others? Especially not comparing yourself to others who got to go to art school, or had a lot more resources than you had when you started learning? (Started in the pre-youtube days, so envious of all the tools kids have nowdays-yes i realise they're also available to me, but it would have saved me years of frustration)
Man… as a life long “drawer” 🙄… this whole video resonates and has happened to me countless times. I saw a video where even Kim Jung was asked to do anime, so if he still has to deal with this then at least I don’t feel like I am the only one anymore
Weirdest thing is when I was practicing expression drawings during my summer school study to stay occupied, and I drew a character crying, and my teacher came up behind me and was like "I understand how you feel ect ect". She thought it was some deep thing and that i was drawing myself cryin. 😭😭😭
True. Im not an commercial artist, just someone who enjoy casually drawing and sketching fanart since like kindergarten, but hands and feet are the easiest things to draw for me, somehow, and I mean like pretty accurate ones. Almost everything else is very hard to come up with, especially faces and hair.

Just tell then "No I'm hunting a purple elephant with my nerf gun, Duhhh!"

Started my OC in 2018 at 1 AM as I was supposed to be studying for an exam :)
Bruh I feel attacked. My primary OC was conceived around the latter half of 2018 when I was still in Senior High School.
I started off with a Novel involving him for a school project but wanted to flesh him out better, and ironically enough, in some fanfics of my favorite stories.

My friend said “Art will get you no where, it’s useless” when I list art careers, she said it isnt art. Like what.
“A real artist does it for the love of their craft!”
Ah yes, and a real farmer spends days out in his fields, working his butt off, only to give his crops away for free because he loves working with plants.
The AUDACITY of some people.
I feel like comparing it to a florist and/or landscaper is more apt. nobody undervalues the products of farmers because its. tangible objective crop. but a florist or landscaper? oh, you made some plants look pretty (shrug)
people forget that art is like using people’s eyes to hack their brains. they write off creative pursuits as decorative or some form of useless luxury. but they disregard that understanding and being able to make visual crafts also enhances utility applications, too. and that art is intrinsic to humanity and even nature.

I also mainly to draw stylized art, and they get disappointed i don't draw realism.
lmaoo i swear it seems realism is the most widely appreciated form of art ( that i despise alot)

I like the attention. Plus getting caught drawing is better than getting caught on my phone.
Wait, you guys finish stuff?
I feel like it's one of those cases of having a certain image in your head, about how the finished artwork will look like, but it either doesn't get there quickly enough, or you get sidetracked/lose motivation midway through.
lmaooooo! i get side tracked and lose motivation all the time! those entrepreneurs and motivational speakers on instagram lied
Whenever I learn sth new -however small or big- i pick an unfinished piece and try to test out the newly acquired info and truth be told that is how I finish most of them 😂😂😂
I have a whole folder full of unfinished projects that I am too scared to get back to.
No it’s exactly that lol. Especially the not “quickly enough”.
"Can you draw me?"
"Sure, my commission rates start at $80 USD :)"
Usually that stops them in their tracks but I have actually gotten a commission out of doing that!
"Can you teach me how to draw?"
Me: man I'm still learning how to draw, how can I teach you 😭
Me to my siblings, lol. Like, how am I going to teach them when I started learning by winging it & still struggle to actually use construction lines
I remember when I was on high school and was showing my sketchbook to someone, and she just went over one of my OCs and asked me "is this you?" even if we look nothing alike, just based off my OC and me sharing the same birthday lol
Edit: also wow, it's crazy that anime is so popular now, back on the day people were giving me weird looks for drawing anime and not realistic stuff as if you were only an artist if you didn't draw cartoony stuff
God the high I chase when I capture the right pose in the hands alone is mwah
I love drawing hands but I still struggle! I just love the final product!
the fact that I’m still sort of a beginner artist, but has had ALL of these situations happen to me…is really saying something-
It happens to every artist regardless of skill level. People just don't understand art SMH
@@dreamingahopefuldream4439 Aren't you arrogant? Is it really so wrong for someone to take an interest in something skillful? I am an artist and sice day one, people did exactly what was listed in the video and I'm not so much of a jerk to not understand that they have a right to be intrigued! Some people have never drawn before or taken time to, so when they see others giving it a shot, they want to see and ask about it. It's friendly human nature. Even I do this as an artist besides asking for free art. You are a very rude person. "People just don't undertstand art" when really, they are someone probably friendly trying to have a social interaction with someone they realized is interesting. Why not be a little more thankful someone deems you interesting enough to take the time to say something? It's called flattery.
@@goawaypleasethanks Woah. No need to blow up on me. My comment wasn’t intended to be rude in the slightest. I understand how other people can be curious to your art but not everyone wants to be bothered when they are drawing. If you enjoy when people are curious about your art then that is fine. For other people they don’t enjoy it and have had experiences that left a bitter taste in their mouth, including myself. I apologize if you think I came off rude in my comment as it wasn’t intended to be that way.

lmaooooo don't we all. sometimes the easiest and simplest things are the ones we keep forgetting
Oh my god I relate to this video 😂 so many people ask me all the time what I'm drawing or if I could draw them and it's honestly so annoying ..
SAME.
Seriously, I don’t hate anime but I get so annoyed when people compare my art to anime, I draw in a realistic/cartoonish way.
@@meikahidenoriyea, that's the only way to get through in life as an Artist.
My family was always very keen to brag about my "drawing skills" but wouldn't actually be enthusiastic about it when I would show them haha. Great way to build up a child's confidence. So yeah, I've given up on showing people my art or chasing an art career now.
did you draw your profile picture??.? If yes, you are XXL talented
@@peeble10 as it happens, yes! Thanks for the high praise ^^
i’m an artist myself and whenever my friends say “what should i draw” i always tell them draw me lmao
"Wow you drawed that from your brain?! So creative!"
So am I the only one who can imagine now?-
To be fair, some people can't form images in their "mind's eye", and just see nothing when they try to imagine. For me, I "imagine" as a list of nebulous traits and vibes of arrangement of these traits without seeing anything, and it takes practice to be able to get it into a cohesive image. I often need to sketch things out to know exactly what I'm trying to imagine lmao.
I get that so much, lmao
Some people can't.
Aphantasia, look it up, its really interesting but as a person whose mind is always full, the concept is inconceivable lol
XD I can't count how many times I called someone cooker XD
"Have you heard of anime?" - in the year of our lord 2021 I assume everyone's heard of anime. Doesn't mean everyone's gonna like it.

When I started going to public school when I was 12, I was SOOO sick of people asking me to teach me how to draw. So for the next 3 or 4 years, if someone asked me to teach them how to draw, I'd always respond with "okay! what do you want me to show you first?"
They'd either immediately chicken out or give up a few steps in.
Same! Hands clicked for me some time in college, and they’re always a challenge, but a FUN challenge.

As someone with mild prosopagnosia but also someone who has a hard time saying no, the "can you draw me?" question feels me with dread to no end.
My parents would always say that I could do art as a hobby on the side of my “real job” because it wasn’t a “real job”, meanwhile they’re watching an extremely successful show with lots of character creation and cgi 😫
8:38 BRUH I MY FRIENDS ALWAYS DO THAT TO ME "at least you're doing what you love" doing what you love isnt always fun
I had a friend who kept asking "Can you draw me riding a unicorn?" And anytime I said I wasn't sure what I wanted to draw she would be like "Me riding a unicorn??"
It made me want to implode tbh
Another thing that's annoying is "are you drawing yourself? Is that you?". Do I really look like a blue skinned person with no eyes? I guess aliens are real then. Where's the paparazzi? How am I even drawing if I can't see? I know blind people exist but..?
Totally accurate video XD And for some reason, as an artist, I actually love drawing hands, they're just so fun
I like angry birds theme background of that video that's kind of nostalgia
hahahaha man of culture!!
I also made 300 pages of comics and half were published.
damn!, talk about gaming the system!
@@MohammedAgbadi It did take me 10 000 drawing to get good. Number of time to get good in doing a brake job, 1. Just a thought.

1: out of all the things in the world you could ask me to draw, you pick yourself...are you that vein
2: i don't want to insult you if the drawing doesn't come out great
3: pictures take time to draw, time is precious, most charge for theirs
4: i don't even draw myself because i personally find realism boring unless it's realism that is based on the unreal.

EEEEWWWWWWW NO NO NO! 🤢🤮
I'm not sure why, but you had me laughing so friggin' hard at the "drawer" bit.
As an artist i actually don’t mind when people ask me “woah did you draw that?” Or if they look at me draw. it actually makes me feel good because it tells me that im actually good at drawing and that the negative voices in my head are actually completely wrong. Though sometimes i get carried away looking at others draw and forget other artists don’t like it when people watch them draw 😅
Edit: i never knew asking other artists to teach me how to draw was a bad thing 😭

I might even erase a doodle completely because I’m embarrassed about it

lmaoooo!! cakeeeeee!
*look at my drawing*

Girl I barely know how to draw and you're asking me to teach you?😭
hahahahaha
I always find it easier to draw when there’s no one around me. I can’t be embarrassed if no one is around to judge any character or mistake I make. I can actually focus when someone isn’t looking over my shoulder. There’s just a lot more pressure overall if someone is watching me draw
Unpopular opinion: I LOVE drawing hands. I look up common hand poses like fists and get reference images. This doesn't mean I'm good at drawing them...
I wish I had the same mentality, that would mean I would actually put in effort to draw them even if it comes out bad lol
"I don't know any artist who just loves drawing hands"
WELL ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF!
True. Im not an commercial artist, just someone who enjoy casually drawing and sketching fanart since like kindergarten, but hands and feet are the easiest things to draw for me, somehow, and I mean like pretty accurate ones. Almost everything else is very hard to come up with, especially faces and hair.
