- Can’t live without sauerkraut on Thanksgiving? How very Baltimore of you! With the holiday right around the corner, we decided to take a look back at some Baltimore Thanksgiving food traditions and we are thrilled to have our favorite guest star, Lashelle Bynum, here to help us. Have a safe holiday and we’ll see you next week with another Five Minute Histories video!
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." Every week, we’ll record a short video about a different historic place in Baltimore and post it on our Facebook page and TH-cam channel.

the German community in Baltimore is the oldest, possibly in the country, and the most likely to hold a tradition from the old country.
I grew up in York, PA and had relatives there and in Gettysburg (Adams County). Any time turkey was served there was a side dish of sauerkraut! It works well with the turkey!
My mother- in-law grew up in Baltimore and we always have sauerkraut and crab casserole 🦀 Would love to see more of Lashelle. She’s a hoot 😊
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
Thank you, Have a Happy and safe Hoiday 😂
Lashelle is the best!
Always part of our Thanksgiving part of baltimore, part of its German, Polish and Bohemian culinary landscape.
Thanks for another informative video, especially since I lived near Baltimore (in Laurel) for 17 years, but I never heard about the Baltimore turkey-sauerkraut-Thanksgiving tradition!
I love my house smelling like Saurkraut! Add a pork chop or rib and some brown sugar and caraway seeds. Excellent!!! Loved this Five Minute History! Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Great presentation. Thank you. I grew up with sauerkraut at thanksgiving -- I mash it together with the mash potatoes and gravy-- their's nothing better. My dad's heritage is Pennsyvlania Dutch/German.
Best 5 minute history yet!
Thanks Allison :)
We have sauerkraut with pork and caraway seeds, and creamed corn and apple butter with cottage cheese.
I love sauerkraut!
I love that lady!
ME TOO! She is the best - makes me smile every time!!!
Lashelle is our favorite guest!
I always serve fried sauerkraut at Thanksgiving. Cook it down until it has a little sear on it. Intensifies the flavor.
That sounds interesting …
Thanks for a super great show
Mom was very pretty!! My husband says, for a white boy, I can "sure burn some pots" and always "put my foot in" what I cook" Especially my collards with smoked turkey wings in them!
😂😂 Thank you, have good and safe Holiday …
you all too!@@niadorian1
