As an American, I’ve never had a thanksgiving sandwich 😂
I just don’t bother with the bread anymore. My preference is just a bag of cold leftover turkey as the protein and some other cold side dish/veggie for a quick meal.
came here to comment this, what the fuck is a thanksgiving sandwich lmao
@@milkman3873 It’s not a formal custom. It’s just part of what can happen with leftover turkey after Thanksgiving. I wish they had served proper roast turkey instead, but it’s not like I’ve never made a sandwich with leftover turkey (and mustard). But to substitute this leftover meal for actual fresh roasted turkey? That’s not the genuine experience.
sandwiches for thanksgiving, wtf? this ain’t no tradition

@@sneer0101 It is absolutely true, it has even carried over into the way some European Americans cook their food. here in America.

I thought they were pretty great
How could you fail to give them the store-bought canned cranberry sauce. I would have loved to see them react to the sauce sliding out and retaining the shape of the can.
That's the cranberry sauce that my family used when growing up and we loved it, delicious flavor. I would eat it by itself, not on anything but if you put a thin spread of it on bread and just add turkey only (maybe try mustard with it too) it tastes delicious.
Oh that would have been great to see.

I'm an American citizen and even I always say that sweet potatoes are a dessert. I've never had the marshmallows on top and I think it'd be far too sweet together for my pallet. With a bit of salt and butter added is so delicious 🤤
You gotta do Marsh Mellows, Brown Sugar, cinnamon, and cloves in your sweet potato casserole! Just marshmallows and sweet potato is not enough. Gotta do the whole thing, and yes, eat it as a dessert.

Try Paula Deen's Old No.7 Sweet Potatoes with Black Jack Daniels bourbon simmered into the potatoes. Not a marshmallow in sight and they're SO fabulous...
@@Judith-wq2jp That actually sounds succulent and something I may enjoy. I'll have to try it. Thank you for the recommendation!
You can Google the recipe. My friend Karen turned me on to them. The bourbon adds another element of flavor that is just wonderful. Since I discovered this way to make them, those poor marshmallows got left in the dust.
While we're on the subject of marshmallows, does anybody else remember when CAMPFIRE marshmallows were packed in a box instead of a see-through plastic bag? They were SOOO good!

Advice for Pecan pie. Put in the microwave for like 30seconds or 1minutes then put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of that. It will blow their minds off. I was born and raised in the Philippines and moved to the United States 13years ago. My first Thanksgiving here in the States my sister in law made cobbler pie with ice cream, there were literal sparks in my mouth when i tried it. It blew my mind away cz I've never tasted anything that good before.
Yup!!!! Pumpkin pie cold, and pecan pie warm with vanilla ice-cream.
I love their smiles on their faces when they enjoy the food & their reactions are priceless!
Depending on where you are in the US the thanksgiving meal is going to vary a LOT
Thank you, same thing I said. Freedom to chose our family menu 🤣
Absolutely. We've never had sweet potatoes or pecan pie for Thanksgiving. We've also never had green bean casserole, which wasn't featured in the video but, appears on many people's Thanksgiving and Christmas tables.
Indeed! In addition to turkey, we also have honey-glazed ham. We also have rolls, corn bread, Mac n cheese, green bean casserole, a potatoe dish, pecan pie and Ranger cookies. Yum to all of it!
I mean it's going to vary but most people who called a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal know exactly what it's in reference to.
@@alewicke those things are very southern. I live in Texas and they’re very common here. That sweet potato casserole is like a taste of heaven! Green bean casserole is pretty good too. Very cheesy. Oh, and chances are, the turkey you have down here is going to be fried. That will change your life if you’ve never had it. Fried turkey is moist and tender. Not at all Dry.
I'm a 67 year old Amrican. I have never heard of a Thanksgiving sandwich that has all of the table food piled on it. Just the meat. These boys were lovely.
It's a joke from the show Friends. Lol
I'm 67 and we have a turkey restaurant at a food court in a big mall here in Palm Beach Gardens, Fl. Business is brisk year round and the biggest seller is the turkey sandwich with turkey, moist bread stuffing and cranberry sauce. It's delicious! And I'm not a big turkey fan.
@@frankphillips5660 that’s the only way I’ve done a turkey sandwich.
I'm a 42 year old American. We've always made sandwiches out of the leftovers, like what was shown here. There are restaurants that make them as a special item around this time of year. Jobs I've worked at (mostly hospitals), will make them too.

Tbf the marshmallow thing is a bit weird 😂
I never eat this. Savory and sweet doesn't do it for me. I don't understand it either.
To be fair, about half of us are anti marshmallows it seems like! And that's if people want sweet potatoes at all, a divisive side in the US In my experience. I prefer the dark horse option, sweet potato casserole with pecan streusel topping.
Candy yams

This was so very sweet. Just lovely. These boys are so articulate and polite, funny and intelligent. Such a pleasant change from American boys. Well done Fulham Boy’s School. Mr. Smith is the funniest Principal ever!
Pecan pie was literally invented by a corn syrup company in order to sell more corn syrup.
It’s just a pie crust filled with vanilla corn syrup and some pecans on top to hide the fact that it’s just a tub of corn syrup.

My mother made the absolute best whipped sweet potatoes with toasted marshmallow topping. And yes we ate it as a side dish alongside the turkey and everything else. It was a nice contrast to all the savory things on the menu.
The tradition of doing this dates pretty far back to the beginning of the 20th century- c. 1918. My mother called it “candied yams with Marshmallows.” Mom was born in 1921, and she was expert at making this dish. Her sweet potatoes or yams were always super creamy and not too sweet, and the marshmallows were absolutely flawlessly toasted to a pleasing golden brown.

I think it has a bit to do with if you watched Friends or not. Most who did know the Moist Maker Sandwhich. Classic episode. The sandwhich sounded so good that ppl started making it. And it IS that good. The key is the moist maker on the middle. Its a 3rd slice of bread dipped on gravy and placed on the middle like a big mac. That way the outside bread stays dry yet the sandwich is still moist. And made from all the Thanksgiving, Xmas leftovers.
The boy who ate everything was so delightful to watch. He can sit at my table if hes ever in America. I love to see kids eat...i feel they understand its just not food.
As a teacher, thank you so much for deciding to use your sponsorship money to buy breakfast for the whole school. It always astonishes me how pecan nuts haven't traveled over to Europe. They are such a big thing in North America.
You can get them easy enough in the UK it’s just that other varieties of nuts are more popular.
I prefer them to walnuts. They have a sweeter taste. Walnuts can have a bit of bitterness.
They’re not nuts. They come from trees. They’re pits
Well they're here in Ireland! Bear claw pastry with pecans is very popular.
@@willchurch3743 No they are not. Botanically, pecans are nuts! Pits are in fruits like cherry, peaches and olives. All of which grow on trees. Peanuts are the 'nuts' that botanically are NOT nuts (they are legumes).
My family didn't make sandwiches after Thanksgiving but we did wrap turkey, cranberries and and stuffing in lefsa. As for yams and marshmallows, ick! We always had roasted turkey with stuffing made with celery and nuts, roasted yams, mashed potatoes (leftovers used to make lefsa), fresh cranberry sauce made from berries (not canned) and squash or pumpkin pie with ice cream.
For a non American ,it's hard to explain how highly regional our Thanksgiving celebration menus can be. For example, our family would never have marshmallows on their sweet potatoes, pecan pie, or green bean salad. Thanksgiving meals are diverse, fascinating and strange 😂 that being said, the one constant for ir most meals is the turkey.

🤔 As an American, I do have one thing to say about the food selection- it was all sweet stuff and not the traditional cheesy scalloped potatoes, green bean casserole, etc. I guess are those more familiar dishes in Britain?
It's more about American centric items I guess. Something like gratin or dauphinoise they'd probably have exposure to already

But I do have to say, if you tried MY sweet potato casserole, you'd sing a different tune! LOL So fun to watch you try "American" foods. We do the leftovers on the leftover rolls though, not on toast. So it's much like a turkey slider. So good!! Keep up the great videos!

Thanksgiving dinner consists of Turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes with gravy and rolls. I LOVE THANKSGIVING. I used to cook it for my family. And I totally do sweet potatoes differently!!!!
LOVE pumpkin pie...but also love sweet potato pie and pecan pie for Thanks giving.
My best is the turkey, gravy, and stuffing when I cook.
I cried about the free breakfast!!!
Should have done a traditional Thanksgiving dinner no sandwich! turkey mashpotatoes, gravy stuffing, green been casserole, corn, dinner roll, but you got the pumpkin and pecan pie right! ❤
They know what most of those things are. They've had a roast turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy. The only one they may not know of that list is green bean casserole. I was expecting that to come out... along with canned cranberry sauce (if they don't have that in England)
@@deaconcub Yeah but I think if you gave them a full plate with a bit of everything that would have been better than the sandwich as an experience. Because we do not do roast dinner for Thanksgiving the same way they do roast dinner in England.
So basically a Sunday roast then for us in the UK?
Where's the stuffing? My mom learned from her father to make pork sausage stuffing. I could forego everything and just eat that.
But they also know what sandwiches are!@@deaconcub
8:00 “there’s no such thing as too sweet”
A true American at heart 🇺🇸
All hail Lord Smith
In my defense i think he got sweet teeth
Oh yes there is, it gets very sickly when something is too sweet.
I just love they accent. As an American I’ve never had a thanksgiving sandwich 😂
As a yank, I find this channel incredibly entertaining. My feelings move back and forth from pride to embarrassment between segments.
So, so, so true
Imagine calling yourself a yank
@@isaackelly1294 True. I just call myself an American. As a Southerner, I call Northerners Yanks
@@Wagyuary The Brits call all us Yanks.
??? Why do Brits insist on calling us "Yanks", smh. It's more annoying listening to southern Americans calling people north of the Mason-Dixon line "Yankees"....good gawd its 2023
Being American, it never occurred to me how different we all are when it comes to our traditions and the types of food we celebrate with. THANK YOU for the videos, I just love these kids reactions ❤️
To be fair though, the Brits don't actually celebrate Thanksgiving at all.
They never had Pilgrims going through a harsh winter or any of that. It's mainly an American thing, but also adopted by Canada.
Aca en SudAmerica tampoco se celebra esta festividad.
I would think Americans are typically more aware of the big differences between cultures. They don't call America a "melting pot" just for fun.
@@jurisprudence6549 they’re aware of the differences, but when a holiday has its traditional dishes it can be surprising when others create there own. not hard to understand
It's March and I've just bought a pumpkin pie at the store...so thankful they are still making them because November was a bit ago.
Wow, you both are amazing for buying those kids breakfast for a whole year!❤
Me, a canadian, absolutely shook that thanksgiving was introduced as a sandwich, marshmallows and pie 😩
Yeah in America we have turkery, mash potatoe with gravy, green bean, cranberry sauce, and pie. None of this weird sandwhich and sweet potatoe with marshmellow. Maybe it a south thing??? The south eat a lot of casserole.
@@bobbysmith8095 wait you've never had yams for thanks giving. I'm from new England btw so def not a southern thing but I feel like "sweet potato casserole" as they call it was a staple lol. The sandwich however is weird BUT 7-11 does have them. Also to be fair on the sandwich they did say they took that from Friends and from what I've heard a lot of people in Europe tend to learn a ton of american things from Friends 🤣🤣
Me too. As an American this was a big miss on what we eat at Thanksgiving. Never had a sandwich. Lol....
@@bobbysmith8095 I'm GA born and bred, and we had turkey, dressing, sweet potato casserole, corn, celery & broccoli with ranch, deviled eggs, cranberry salad, crescent rolls and chocolate pie for dessert. Here we put pecans on top of the sweet potato casserole instead of marshmallows, and it's DIVINE! My favorite Thanksgiving side dish, but it really should be dessert.
Lol, I think this is a pretty normal thanksgiving for me, I’m from Long Island.
Of course, most of the main dishes (turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, Brussels sprouts) are stuff UK teens would be familiar with, hence the bit more selective mix of foods.
I think the sandwich was from a tv show, but I’ve definitely made something similar out of leftovers on many Black Fridays.
So polite yet full of character. Kids are growing up well and their parents would be proud.
If only most of our young men here would be like this.
@@ladyd8339 We have many decent, respectful and God-fearing young men in the USA. My fellow Brits would tell you our youth also have a large number of ill-mannered, disrespectful and slovenly young people here. We can compliment these sweet young British boys without smearing young men in America in such a general manner.
Wdym "would be proud"? Are their parents not alive or smthn?
@@MTknitter22 People with the "grass is greener on the other side" mindset always comment lol Finally someone with a mind
I behaved in front of a camera at that age as well but it didn't mean I was a saint off camera.
As a southern woman they would not know how to act on one of our thanksgivings 😂 I’m one of 89 grandchildren…. We have enough to feed an army for thanksgiving and Christmas 😂😂😂
That sounds fun. I can imagine the hard work.
This is why each family is different with whst they serve because not the entire family likes everything and for variety. Turkey is served w a ham or roast beef but stuffing and cranberry sauce are staples at just about every Thanksgiving meal.
I wish my kids could go to a school like this. They are all so well mannered, well dressed, and respectful. Must be a wonderful school.
There's plenty of schools like this in the USA
Dude, I'm 39 and I wish I could go to a school like this. They're all so lively and charming.
These are most likely the "good kids" that the headmaster prefers over the rest
I promise you not all of them are this well mannered. Lol
They're so different than some American kids. Can't get over how legit funny they all are.
I'm American. I've never in my life had a leftover sandwich that had all of those ingredients on it. It's usually just turkey and maybe dressing but the sides stay on the side. Even I think that's weird.😆
Ive had left over turkey sandwhiches but not like that. However I intend to try it now, Im sure I will like it !
Facts
I've had cranberries on my turkey sandwich.
So true! I've seen it on TV and in cartoons and always wondered, "who tf does that?!"
Speak for yourself bro i usually put turkey, ham, mac and cheese, sweet potato, and cranberry sauce on mine
When making my sweet potato pie, I never use the marshmallow topping. I've always used a pecan, brown sugar and butter mixture on top.
As an American I've never had a Thanksgiving sandwich, but I saw this before last Thanksgiving and made one and I gotta honestly say, everything went together so well except for the yams lol. It was great just keep the yams on the side 😂
what a nice way to start the day knowing the British Highschool series isn't over 😂😂❤
On gawd 😆
Thank god. This is the best series ever!!!
its getting boring and stale.. need to change it up. maybe a mixed or all girls school for a change
@@vorlon81 maybe it's you that has changed not them lol spread positivity, these are just normal highschoolers. they don't need to carry the burden of "being the next" so and so
@@thatgirl9532 we really look forward to these notifications!!
11:57 - Wow they could have used the sponsorship $$ for anything else, but chose to give back to the kids ❤️ with inflation & cost of living nowadays, this could mean the world to some of these kids/parents - Josh & Ollie, you guys are doing such awesome work 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
3rd Thursday of every November. Hopefully you will all come over to America and actually enjoy it some day!
