Today I attempt to follow a Bob Ross tutorial using chocolate ganache on a cake. 100% edible, yummy chocolate cake with orange syrup, butter cream, white chocolate ganache. Bob Ross did many, many seasons on TV, showing tutorial on how to paint quick, impressive landscapes using oil paint. Today there is no paint in sight, just chocolate ganache and hot cream to wash the brushes. Bob Ross would be so proud of you! He always said "Anyone can paint." Did you know he once made a painting in grayscale on his show, because a fan had said he couldn't paint because he was colorblind? Bob Ross is an international* treasure 💕💕

Cayla, you should tell your mum that there's an easier way to paint on cakes.
If she makes and ices the cake with the fondant, let's the fondant dry,then uses professional food colouring paste (available on line), diluting the food colouring with vodka or gin as needed, it's easy
You simply paint with the colours as you would with tube water colour, mixing the colours similarly
You can sketch the outline first (very lightly)in pencil, but don't apply any pressure
Also,you can't take out colour or use wet on wet,it has to right first time
It's like a cross between water colour and acrylic painting really
@@helentee9863 Thanks for the tip! My mom typically does pallet knife oil painting, and the ganache actually works really well with that style of painting. She's starting to get into water color though, so maybe we'll try that for the next cake.

Well that is usually because they are making very big cakes for events and such. They sectioned off a piece of the dessert for sliceable cake but if the whole desser was fully cake it wouldn’t be stable enough, and when you cut into it would collapse

You really Should give it a try I was never into painting until I took a painting class in college and it’s definitely not as hard as it seems. With painting it’s a simple form of art you don’t need to go crazy with the details you put some white next to some grey with a sponge and you get puffy clouds. And the best thing is that you can have your own style you could make a bob rose inspired painting in your own artistic style you can add sand and other things to add interesting textures as well which is one of my favorite things to do.

Me: put the oven on at 60°C and help me unwrap this chocolate.
I only had white, milk and dark, but for a wolf in a forest in winter that's all the colours you need.

Fun fact: Each Bob Ross painting actually has three versions. One painted ahead of time for a reference, the second being the one made in the video, and the third is made for instructional books. I always thought it was cool he could replicate the same painting three times in a row.
In the documentary its revealed that Bob likes to joke with the cameraman that he "doesn't know what's going to happen next" because the reference version is just out of the frame.

Ryy not really. It can be annoying if you’re anal about the differences tho. Bc no two paintings are going to be completely identical. Otherwise repetition is just practice, something all artists do.

Pro tip: if you add just the tiniest bit of purple to a creamy white, it will neutralize the yellow tone in the paint (or chocolate, in this case) and you’ll be left with a true titanium white!

This video made me so happy. Bob was someone I watched with my father as I was a kid and he remains a calm, yet powerful inspiration to this day. Bob always says there were no mistakes, only happy little accidents. He would have loved your canvas of choice, and it's beautiful, no excuses necessary.

The point isn't too be as good as Bob Ross, the point is to make something and put emotion into it.
You did that. It's a beautiful cake. It's a beautiful artwork. It doesn't matter if it's as good as Bob's, it matters that it's something with passion behind it.
Don't sell yourself short, especially when it comes to art or something you love doing.

She did something masterful, art wise, because she obviously put her will into it.
We need more more people like you on this plannet
yep! beautiful high-quality art is nice, and by no means should people stop making it... but the "quality" or beauty of art doesn't matter all that much, in the grand scheme of things. humans are naturally inclined to making art as a form of self-expression and enrichment - there's no point in beating yourself up because your art isn't good enough, in the same way that there's no point beating yourself up because your casual soccer-playing skills aren't as good as the pros. it doesn't matter if you're good - what matters is that you're enjoying yourself.
it's good to push yourself a bit, sure - it'll give you a nice challenge, and is a good chance to learn and improve - but pushing yourself too far and holding yourself to standards you can't meet will just cause burnout. sometimes, you just need to accept that something you've made didn't turn out quite as you envisioned, because otherwise you might hurt yourself trying to correct it. there's always the option of leaving it for now, and coming back to it when you've had more time to develop as an artist.
(plus, if nobody made "bad" art, we'd have no new artists! everyone starts somewhere, and with a few exceptions, that starting point usually isn't what people consider "good". i started out drawing animals that looked like an arrangement of tubes, lol)
Ok can I just say that goes without saying. Like who cares if it’s better than his or not, like it’s still better then I could do and out of chocolate like wow. So there’s no point saying it’s nowhere near as good bc I’m my view it is near as good and she did it with chocolate.
Ann, as an artist myself let me tell you those clouds look perfectly realistic to me. Tbh with clouds, the more imperfect they are the more realistic they look. the cloud on the right (when facing the piece) is my personal favorite cloud.
I thought the mountains were wonderful
yeah, they may not be perfect but there's many types of clouds, and not all of them will be perfect and fluffy. a bit of imperfection can be good if you're making smth natural
@A horrible person depending on your medium, clouds become easier. With acrylic it's a bit more difficult due to drying times. Doing a sort of "negative cloud" technique where you lay light color and blend a medium tone then add shadows with your darkest tone. Watercolor can be hard but with pretty much the same method as acrylic they come out soft and blended.
@A horrible person Ah, I never really did backgrounds when I used colored pencils. Whatever works though, I prefer using watercolors the most so that's what I have the most knowledge in.

For all the down play you give yourself, it really is quite a nice piece. As well, you clearly had fun doing it, and you allowed yourself some room to experiment, perfectly capturing Bob's core ideology. It's awesome!
A lot of people didn’t know that bob ross was in the military but the thing is, he didnt yell after because he didn’t want to. It’s really sad because the reason he didn’t yell was that if he did he would get very bad PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) it’s really upsetting but he really was a such an innocent man.

Bob Ross Fact: He was an intense perfectionist. Although he acted like he was improvising, Bob always had a finished copy of the painting he was doing off-screen so he could follow it.
Also, your did an amazing job! The cake looks phenomenal.
He also absolutely hated the fact that he was rushed to do it in only about 30 minutes. There was a timer in the studio that he was always look at and he would make snarky remarks about it on camera. He bared his full personality at all times and I loved it

Huh, this actually gives me comfort. I'm also a huge perfectionist and painting without a plan stresses me out a lot, and always jealous on those who can just do it. To know that even Bob Ross himself would need planning behind the scene, it's reassuring

@@madtabby66 The point is that he wanted to share his passion and didn't care if what you did turn out good, bad, or otherwise. He cared that you put in the effort and if you are willing to continue putting effort into it you could and can become good at it. Which, in and of itself, can be applied to anything. Just because Ann used a cake shows that she was willing to put her own creativity into it even if it doesn't look exactly like what he painted. The point is to have fun while learning something new or different.
That is crazy, because picking up a brush and canvas is hard enough!
To do this using a completely different medium just blows my mind! I might also add, no two paintings will EVER look exactly the same, even when painted by the same artist!

"I'd like to know what my finished cake is going to look like rather than just make it up as I go along." That was the genius of Bob. He could imagine a scene in his mind and put it to canvas, or just make up a scene using the same basic techniques. A lot of people think that he only painted mountains and streams, and that's because as someone who grew up in Florida and ended up in Alaska at one point, he found the mountain landscapes in Alaska to be majestic and magical. But when you watch more of his series, you see that he has done all sorts of landscapes, waterfalls, and even ocean horizon scenes.
Something crazy is that my grandparents were friends with bob ross, they both were in the military together. They now have one of his rarest paintings in their living room.

That is straight-up amazing. I majored in art and had to take a painting class where we only used oil paint (which is pretty difficult already), and in terms of texture, ganache is wayyyy more difficult to paint with. That cake is a masterpiece. Anne is the baking version of Bob Ross confirmed.

That looks beautiful! The high saturation of the blues give it a unique fantasy feel, and the rocks look very realistic. The way the brush strokes are scruffy where the rock is actually adds a great layer of both realism and a stylized feel to it. The forest and the water are also both very well painted too, they look almost like a photo lol.
For apparantly not painting much, you did amazing at it!
This was such a fun project and turned out so amazing! Fun fact: Bob Ross used to make a mock-up painting of the one being filmed that would sit off camera for him to refer to, so even he didn’t really like improvising either 😉
Also fun fact: there’s actually three of each painting he ever painted, the first one is the reference, the second is the one he paints on camera, and the third, is for the lady that helped him got the show.

@@sonicchica I've usually heard that the third painting was for his instructional books, though that doesn't actually contradict your point; I'm not sure what he did with the originals. The idea behind doing a third, off-air painting is that his third painting would be a higher quality painting. Probably it's easier to make a painting off-air than during a taping.
TheAguydude it’s less about being off camera, and while I’m sure that’s also part of it (no need to stand to the side), he also spent more time on the third paintings. There was no time limit that there was while filming.

I don’t know if this has been commented yet, but Bob actually knows what he is going to paint. Let me explain: Bob Ross would paint 3 of the same painting. The first would be made before the taping of the show, and the second would be made while he was being filmed. During the TV show you may see him look offscreen to the right side near the camera(I think), and that was him referring to the painting he made before. Then, after the show was done being filmed, Bob would recreate the painting one more time(but more detailed) to be put in his instructional book. I know you didn’t need to know that, but that was a fun fact to expand your knowledge of the legend himself! I can only imagine all the hours of hard work she puts into her videos and baking. And of course talent isn’t everything, no matter how talented someone is they will still have to work hard, she seems very determined and hardworking, she is a good example to us what you can achieve with a lot of hard work

The best thing about Bob Ross's painting style is how even when you've got questionable tools and have little to no experience with painting you can turn out some that actually looks really nice.
I've seen people make Bob Ross landscapes in Microsoft Paint and they still look great.
I've seen a guy use a old Nintendo paint game with a controller to paint a decent Bob Ross painting.
