Was at a 10cc gig last month, and Kevin Godley was sat in the audience with the rest of us. Really wish he had been on that stage because, for me, he was the voice of 10cc, and that's not meant to be an insult to the rest of the band. His voice just stands out. I started secondary in September 1981. I can still remember some of it now- not good memories but then it will be same for so many. This track was on a compilation someone I knew had and I think I bought it myself. It is one of the oddest, quirkiest and in some ways quite sinister sounding songs I have ever heard, and I listen to an eclectic mix of music. It really is atmospheric and moody, not surprising given the subject matter. Kudos to Godley and Creme for writing it. They can be proud of something unique. I largely forgot about it for years ( sometimes that happens) until relatively recently when I listened again and marvelled at its weird brilliance!

Wonderful pop tune from my youth... I Just arrived age 19,from S.W. Cornwall to Manchester city to the Polytechnic in September 1981 after the Summer Moss Side riot... The polytechnic placed me in, 'digs' just the other side of Moss Side from the campus which was scary for me especially when I decided to walk to college one day and found myself walking past 3 or 4 burned out shops on the way !! Funny how various songs remind you of different events..
You could go into a record shop and listen before you bought anything. They'd let you put the record on and listen on headphones. Wish I'd saved those records I bought when younger.
At last I get to hear the 'other' songs from this mysterious group that dazzled me in the middle of the night in 1975 . . Practically a pop institution of creative music . . Scary how versatile the members are.
Reminds me of waiting for the bus in Rusholme Manchester after a Man City night midweek game. 1981 was a turbulent year but society is far more vicious divided and unhappier now. And music reflects that as it is now soulless.

Only as an adult did I learn that Kevin should be more energetic on stage as the director of T.O.T.P didn't think it was "selling the show". Chocky, Dramarama, How, Sapphire and Steel, Anybody remember "Video & Chips" on ITV.
Sadly, the days of quality productions like this are gone now. I can't imagine many people listening to todays music in 10, 20 years time to be honest.
The guys had a few singles out before this but none of them charted in the UK so they (or probably the record company) didn't invest the required money into making a video and they were caught by surprise when this single suddenly took off. I read and interview with them back in the day where they commented on the irony of the situation - they were making videos for other people who had chart hits but when it came to their own one they were empty handed. I think the only video they made for themselves previously was Wide Boy which used the same video technology the guys created for the famous Wrangler adverts. Wide Boy should have been a hit but didn't get much promotion - even I as an ardent fan didn't realise it had been released till after it had come and gone.

Then they would throw us out of the dressing room into the open air to finish dressing up! Yes, autumn 1981 was a terrifying time period for me! Mum eventually reported them to SALFORD EDUCATION COMMITEE!
I was only 9 when this came out, drawn in by the synthesizer music, but the lyrics were the most haunting thing I ever heard! This video does have the final section's atmosphere ruined, though, by the "Watch these videos next" popping up at the bottom!
I recall an interview where they commented on the irony that they were known for doing other people's videos but this one caught them on the hop because no-one expected this track to be released as quickly as it was and it became a hit so quickly that there simply wasn't enough time to do their own video.

Legit both love and hate this track. Love it because my grandad used to play it all of the time when I was a kid and it sounded otherworldly even in the eighties, but hate it because he was abusive. Ying and yang and all that...

This song came out months after my mum left my violent dad. Who had us living in fear. I was 6 and this song was my favourite!
