The Rollerball remake was really bad. The two things that really stuck out though were how small the arenas looked, considering there were still motorcycles trying to navigate around the tracks, and that really weird fully green motorcycle chase that just seemed like they shot it fully in infrared because they ran out of money to do proper lighting, as opposed to it being some cool point of view shot. The original was a classic. slow moving at times, but brutal when the games were on and the social commentary was so on point.
I can’t imagine how different Rebecca Romijn’s career would have turned out if Femme Fatale was better received on release. She was one of the most stunning women of her generation, it’s a shame she barely starred in anything.
I watched this before the James Cann movie as a 8 year old and found it a fun movie I never could find again. It actually led to me watching the James Cann film so I have to give it that.
i too saw the original when I was around 8 or so and it was fantastic and mind opening, this was just a piece of trash but i couldnt wait to see it originally
If time has proven anything, it’s that Chris Klein has no business being a leading man. He had two hits to start off his career, American Pie and Election, which was an amazing stroke of luck. And he was great in both. But he had small roles in both and played guys who were kind of naive and not the smartest. Once he tried to play stoic leading men, his struggles were apparent.
Taking the social commentary away turned this movie into a glorified Mountain Dew/X-games commercial. I was shocked to find out later that this was a John McTiernan film. I can’t believe he destroyed his career for this crap.
There were some very odd choices made on this movie, like the decision to shoot an extended chase sequence, entirely on night-vision camera, instead of just lighting the scene
All three of those “stinkers” were bangers. Casts excellent, stories varied and intriguing, atmospheric and engaging. And 13th Warrior was a Crichton flick that actually managed not to besmirch its source material. Now I don’t know if I even wanna watch this video with hot takes like those.
I was working at a theatre when this movie came out. I honestly enjoy it. No, it's nothing like the original and it's not great on many levels where it potentially could have been. I like to think of it as a 2000's version of what a Cannon Films Sci-Fi/Action flick would have been like. I want to see a true uncut hard R release, but I know that's about as likely as finding a pristine copy of London After Midnight at this point. Look out for cameos not only from Pink and Slipknot, but also Paul Hayman as the Rollerball Announcer and a "blink and you miss it" one of Shane McMahon (son of former WWE owner Vince McMahon.)
I am a big fan of the original Rollerball so I was intrigued by news of a remake. I was very disappointed by how it turned out. The remake entirely missed the point. The actual Rollerball wasn't the most important part of the original film, it was Jonathan E and his fight with the corporation. His fight against the odds for his own individuality was the backbone of the film. The 2004 remake was just an utter jumble with no real story behind it. The original is still the best and has as much to say about the world as it did in 1975, in nearly 50 years, some things never change.
Only reason I have any recollection of this movie is because a local DJ said, "A new movie comes out on DVD tomorrow. It opens today, it's called Rollerball." Never seen it, and don't know anyone who has.
From what I remember reading, an earlier draft of the script was really good, but John McTiernan thought it had too much political commentary and should have more action and excitement, which lead to the finished movie
Random fact. There was an episode of Real World vs Road Rules where a cameo in this movie was a reward for a challenge. Literally, that's all I've retained about this remake.
Ah yes...I remeber. We watched it way back at a friends house on DVD. But the Player malfunctioned and always skipped some parts. Well lets say We watched Rollerball in around 45 minutes and didn't thought we missed muched of it.
I love how Rebecca Romijn's also won "fake accent" for FEMME FATALE. She was playing an American who's supposed to have a fake accent. Shows they didn't really watch the film.
I'd love a The Offer meets The Wire style miniseries about McTiernen making Rollerball & his downfall. Film it like a McTiernen thriller about a man's passion & drive ultimately destroying him (maybe with flashbacks of his rise/success & potentially happier times?)
13th warrior was a disaster. McTerian filmed so many scenes with his trademark hand held super close in camera work you couldn’t tell what the hell was happening. Crichton was forced to reshoot almost an entirely new movie.
Damn, the director of Die Hard made the most disappointing remake ever made even he got into trouble years later making career a downhill in Hollywood. TBH, Rollerball remake ain’t that great for remakes unlike Dawn of the Dead 2004 became a masterpiece for being the dead zombies around. John, why?
Watch this movie again.... In the scene where Kline is riding a motorcycle through a barbed wire fence the SFX goes boiingoiingg like a cartoon. When my dad and I heard that in 2002 we put this movie on our worst movie list.
I recently saw the James Caan original and then I tried watching this one and I could not get into it. I tried but it was just a heaping pile of goat shit.
So glad that I missed this movie. I really liked the original. It had so much potential had they gone with the original script. The could have gone for a subversive type of social commentary like Starship Troopers. That film proved it could be done.
Whoever wrote this episode needs to actually watch the movies before talking about them and not google a "worst of" list. Medicine Man and 13th Warrior are both underrated films with the latter being a cult classic. They certainly aren't as bad as this video.
i accrued a huge late balance on my family video account renting this movie. I eventually just paid the sale price. me and my friends played a few different drinking games to it. good times.
There didn't seem to be a whole lot of people who thought "The 13th Warrior" was a bad movie. I remember seeing it in theatres and it was very well liked. I feel like you put that in there for engagement bait. Which is...lame.
I had to turn off the Rollerball remake and this is when the quality of Hollywood movies really started to sink. It's nowhere near as bad as it is today though.
What a stinker, all the signs were there from the outside. A pushed back release date to a month known for dumping movies known to underperform and of course the rating change in hope that with a lower rating more butts could be in the seats. The craziest thing though is the whole wiretapping thing. That’s just next level weird.
Sadly, the remake isn't good, but then again the original film comes up short for me. The social commentary aspect is never fully explored in the original. We never see what is at risk for Jonathan.
I am curious why the remake sucked so bad. The original is a classic, the remake I've never made all the way through. Excellent director, at last we shall have closure.
13th Warrior is not a stinker. It's a cult classic.
Agreed
Truth!
Yep
Seriously one of my favorite films and I've bought it on DVD as a Christmas gift before.
Totally. I love it.
The 13th Warrior is a great, underrated movie, a hidden gem and I will die on this hill.
A lot of us here like it too but needs a director's cut
I agree, what's with the hating on 13th warrior? I loved it at the cinema inactually bought the vhs video of it at home!
I say 'fire verm' at least once a week
It’s a fun flick for sure!!!
I enjoyed it a great deal.
00:32 - 13th Warrior and Basic are great films. Not box office successes but definitely not stinkers. That's ludicrous.
AGREED.I have fond memories of watching them both at the cinema and enjoying them.
All you gotta do is tell the story right
I like “Medicine Man”, and I know some people who love “the 13th Warrior”. Taste in films is subjective.
Medicine Man is awesome!
The Rollerball remake was really bad. The original was a classic. slow moving at times, but brutal when the games were on and the social commentary was so on point.
i saw this opening day with a bunch of friends in Jr High only because Slipknot and Paul Heyman.
So random that Paul Heyman was in it. Him and Naveen Andrews are the only ones that are actually really good.
Good things about the Rollerball remake:Paul Heyman, Jean Reno, LL Cool J, Shane McMahon cameo, the soundtrack. That’s about it.
I can’t imagine how different Rebecca Romijn’s career would have turned out if Femme Fatale was better received on release. She was one of the most stunning women of her generation, it’s a shame she barely starred in anything.
Me and mum loved thirteenth warrior. It's one of those movies we mutually bonded over
the airplane landing on the dirt road at night was awesome
what the hell are they driving?
@@funky-puppet some kind of race car or truck??? Remember a motorcycle was strapped onto to the back of it
The original was far too dark and 70's to be remade as a popcorn flick.
He would've had a better chance redoing running man
1975 rollerball is a classic and more prescient than ever
I'm surprised when you compared this movie to the WWE you didn't mention that Paul Heyman was the announcer and that Shane McMahon had a cameo.
The 13th Warrior is great. Love the way the subtitles slowly disappear and make you feel as though you are learning their language with Banderas.
dork
I watched this before the James Cann movie as a 8 year old and found it a fun movie I never could find again.
It actually led to me watching the James Cann film so I have to give it that.

Norman Jewison directed the original Rollerball and the original Thomas Crown Affair.
At least McTiernan’s remake of Thomas Crown Affair was good
The original movie was brilliant, deep and well made in every aspect. The remake was so bad, it made me angry to watch.
The 13th Warrior is awesome.
i am from lethbridge alberta and they filmed the night vision scene near here.
i met LL and chris klein while they were in town filming that scene.
If time has proven anything, it’s that Chris Klein has no business being a leading man. He had two hits to start off his career, American Pie and Election, which was an amazing stroke of luck. I really loved Medicine Man! I'm a huge Sean Connery fan
Me too. Too bad he quit the film industry after making that dreadful movie The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
@@kerry-j4m He got out in time! I don't think he would've been able to stand the green screen acting era.
@@geminijinxies7258 AGREED.
There were some very odd choices made on this movie, like the decision to shoot an extended chase sequence, entirely on night-vision camera, instead of just lighting the scene
Some movies just don't need to be remade
Thank the 7 wonders of the world someone makes this statement,I've been saying this for years.
All three of those “stinkers” were bangers. Casts excellent, stories varied and intriguing, atmospheric and engaging. And 13th Warrior was a Crichton flick that actually managed not to besmirch its source material. Now I don’t know if I even wanna watch this video with hot takes like those.

Got to agree with The Razzies, Rebecca Romin’s appearance made some sense where Madonnas appearance in DAD was completely unnecessary 😂
An urban myth was that the stuntmen had so much fun filming the original that that would go back on set after filming to keep on playing.
I am a big fan of the original Rollerball so I was intrigued by news of a remake. I was very disappointed by how it turned out. The remake entirely missed the point. John McTiernan was the BOSS!
The Hunt for Red October is one of the greatest films ever made.
Basic is TERRIBLE>
You shown Powning Drool
The real Drowning Pool died in 2002..
RIP Dave
As a Maggot, I love the movie for the appearance of Slipknot.
I was in the crowd watching them film the opening scene
Just rewatched the 13th Warrior again last week; is an excellent film
Only reason I have any recollection of this movie is because a local DJ said, "A new movie comes out on DVD tomorrow. It opens today, it's called Rollerball." Never seen it, and don't know anyone who has.
From what I remember reading, an earlier draft of the script was really good, but John McTiernan thought it had too much political commentary and should have more action and excitement, which lead to the finished movie
that was the point of the original political commentary and a scary future.not too much differnt then whats going on now in politics
Random fact. There was an episode of Real World vs Road Rules where a cameo in this movie was a reward for a challenge. Literally, that's all I've retained about this remake.

:::in Paul Heyman voice::: "WIRETAP!!!::
How was this movie green-lit and we can't even get a sequel Alita Battle Angel ?
The big blunder about the Rollerball Remake was that the game itself made no sense. Not even a point scoring system.
Serious question: has that original 120+ minute cut which the test audiences canned, ever been released on physical media?
I love how Rebecca Romijn's also won "fake accent" for FEMME FATALE. She was playing an American who's supposed to have a fake accent. Shows they didn't really watch the film.
When your video popped up, I immediately thought of the Dean Cain movie Future Sport which I was confused and also thinking it was the actual remake.
My college roommate was an extra in this movie
he was lucky he was ONLY cast as an extra; might have saved his career
I like both movies, and have both of them in my collection.
THE thing that makes the remake special is, it has Paul Heyman commentating. ;-)
This wasn't a bad movie, but nowhere near as good as the original!
I like that Paul Heyman is in the film.
I'd love a The Offer meets The Wire style miniseries about McTiernen making Rollerball & his downfall. Film it like a McTiernen thriller about a man's passion & drive ultimately destroying him (maybe with flashbacks of his rise/success & potentially happier times?)
All the ingredients for a great film unfortunately they lost the recipe
I cant believe you would call The 13th Warrior a stinker, whats going on at JoBlo? haha That movie is awesome.
Didn't even knew this film existed.
I will die on the hill of the Rollerball remake. It’s fun.
13th warrior was a disaster. McTerian filmed so many scenes with his trademark hand held super close in camera work you couldn’t tell what the hell was happening. Crichton was forced to reshoot almost an entirely new movie.
I always Mistake Keanu and Chris in the movies Rollerball and The Replacements cause either could've played the roles and they look so similar.
John, why?

The original is on a different level, this remake is a disney movie
I loved that movie. It was bad but also so good. Especially the ending and music
I was shocked to see Rappagariya featured in this movie
So glad that I missed this movie. I really liked the original. It had so much potential had they gone with the original script. The could have gone for a subversive type of social commentary like Starship Troopers. That film proved it could be done.
It was violent? That is a complaint? In a movie about violence? What the fuck is wrong with people?!
I loved this movie as a kid.

Prbly too silly a concept for him, but verhoven might have been able to do something with it, imo
😂😂😂😂😂 you think 13th Warrior is bad, that's funny
i love this movie still, loved it as a kid always
13th warrior and basic were straight
Paul Heyman? How do you name drop WWE and not mention Paul E Heyman is in the movie?!
Paul Heyman is the best aspect of this film
Medicine Man and 13th Warrior?! Why you dump on thies flicks?
At least they chose a deep cut song from Iowa.
can you do wtf happened to star trek beyond?
Nope basic is absolutely an amazing movie, love rollerball, and the 13th was a solid movie

whao hold the fuck up, 13th warrior is a classic!
I actually like this one!
Hey… I liked Medicine Man and The 13th Warrior.
The 13th Warrior was great..
Put some respect on 13th Warrior
The only reason to see this movie is to see Rebecca Romijn in the leather outfit.
I think one the Biggest downfalls of this movie is the miss casting of Chris Can't Act Kline!!😱🤦♂️🤷♂️
Medicine Man was a great film.
By the way, 13th Warrior is a great movie!
Sadly, the remake isn't good, but then again the original film comes up short for me. The social commentary aspect is never fully explored in the original. We never see what is at risk for Jonathan.
I'm gonna remake Rollerball

13th Warrior is a better movie tgan you deserve
"The 13th Warrior" is awesome. Solid video otherwise.
Harry Knowles is a name I haven't from since I was in college. WTF happened to him?

There was a confusingly similar movie to this with Wesley Snipes and Dean Cain
