The thing that bothers me most about Youngblood is the story implies that almost 20 years after the new colossus the nazi’s still haven’t been defeated. It sucks all the excitement out of Wolfenstein 3’s story and setting before it even exists. If I remember correctly they are only hanging onto Europe in the 1980’s when Youngblood takes place and the rest of the world is rebuilding or revolting but the writers expect us to believe that BJ and his friends liberated America and he was like this is enough. Not buying it he hated the Nazis and wouldn’t stop until they’re all dead.
I love Frau Engel as a character, she's such a vile, unhinged and scary antagonist. Absolutely pure evil, and she's believable in the setting even though she's practically a cartoon.
The game really isn’t that bad, the main criticism of it I’ve seen boils down to the game not being edgy enough and the character being annoying which is frequently accompanied by a women le bad sentiment
@@Schlawg788 tbh the main characters just aren’t that well written or compelling compared to BJ who’s a far more interesting and likeable character and this isn’t even a “woman bad” thing, the main characters in Youngblood just aren’t that good.
TNC felt like it was written by 2 different people with vastly different ideas of the game that hated esch other. Youngblood proved the wrong writer won.
For the game's defense at 2:00:56 , the enigma machine was one of the most powerful encryption device of this time, and yet the nasties were dumb enough to put "heil h*tler" in each of their messages, and its part of what helped Alan Turing to decypher it !
What's known as a "known plaintext attack" in today's jargon. The other one that helped was one of the first messages of the day would begin with "wetterbericht"... the daily weather report.
The problem I have with New Colossus is while Wolfenstein has always been over the top; something I love about it. New Colossus takes it way way too far. To the point where using drones to recover and reattach our main characters severed head so he can fly to Venus! it makes the realistic threat of the Nazi's feel overly clownish.
Yeah I'm for sci-fi but when they go too far they lose me. I guess cause the first one is more believable is cause its more stuff we have done. Like gone too the moon or have robots. Yes it's still sci-fi and unbelievable but its not too far. also I love how they explained all the advanced tech with the whole secret Jewish lairs
@@tiffanywyatt5137"all nahtzee tech is Jewish" is a bullshit plot point. They are evil AND smart, that's the whole deal. Retconning it into this is dumb.
@@tiffanywyatt5137 I think the whole Jewish super tech was actually one of the worst decisions they ever made. The Kreisau Circle were apparently a cabal of select Jewish elite running the world from behind the scenes and had super tech that they deliberately concealed from everyone else to keep themselves powerful? And considering the Nazis got a lot of their tech from finding said super tech, means that the nazis had an actual legit reason to hate since they found everyone was being secretly manipulated from the shadows. Why on Earth would they do this?
For some reason, when a video is longer than 1h I’m much more inclined to click on it. I just love having something to listen to while doing something else (like cooking or going for a walk)
The answer for why you didn't originally notice with Youngblood is simple, you were playing with a friend, even the worst of games are fun with a friend and you can shoot the shit about bad/stupid things Honestly i think these games are a good example of the decline in quality for many game studios in general over the years
Can confirm, i played through Borderlands 3 with a friend and it was a lot more bearable when it was the two of us just laughing at what i generously call "The Story"
8:00 actually this is incorrect. Wolfenstein: TNO has a ‘combat stealth’ mechanic, where enemies have to really on sound or visuals in order to detect you. If you use your suppressed pistol during loud sections, enemies will have a much harder time tracking your location.
Also the supressed pistol, with maxed skills, and while ADSing, does more damage than the Marksman Rifle. If you shoot fast enough, you can stealth kill Supersoldaten
@@Helperbot-2000 less ‘combat stealth’ and more lole enemies being drawn to the sound of your gunfire, instead of actually knowing your exact position as soon as stealth is brokeb
The guy with the eye patch and broken feet in Deathshead's Compound (1946) is Prendergast. Prendergast was the one who triggered the "You ain't got no churches in England?" exchange with "Blondie," the snarky British Paratrooper. He did survive getting launched out of the incinerator room window at the end of the chapter, in addition to the fall into the Baltic Sea by fortune of being nearest to Fergus/Wyatt. His room can be found in the Berlin Safehouse, adorned with Christian paraphernalia. Fergus/Wyatt will make a comment about how they made mistakes in Blazkowicz absence, and sent him off on a mission where he never returned.
Really great observation, I had no idea that was his room but looking back it's obvious since Prendergast was shouting about reading his bible and such before jumping out of the incinerator
I distinctly remember my favourite moment from Wolfenstein 2 TNC Its not the Courtroom battle. Its not the ending. Its none of the flashbacks or overly long cutscenes Its when Super Spesh gets domed by Frau Engel. I kid you not, I was so annoyed by that Marvel Capeshit tier character that the moment he got a rapid cranial surgery by the Head Nasty, I celebrated out loud and yelled "FINALLY!" Don't think that's the reaction the Devs wanted. But its what they got
@sirpaillasson2671 His wife was really unlikeable. But I can’t forget me smiling when he couldn’t help himself from getting off track just to go back to talking about aliens again. I loved the fact that secret military base was in Roswell.
It’s a real technique they teach you in the military, they call it box breathing. I remember watching a interview with an ex US marine Ukraine volunteer soldier who talks about it in passing.
Somebody's got to make some money off this franchise and since Machine Games became allergic to money by Young Blood and showed signs before with New Colossus, I say go ahead replacing moneymaking and story with current year politics first in a fictional story is a bad idea if you want to keep fans.
What I adore so much about Blazkowicz as a character is that - yes - he is a walking, talking flesh-tank who looks like he gets his daily minerals by munching directly on raw fucking metal, but he is also just incredibly kind, empathetic, and caring. Nothing more badass than kindness backed by strength.

And I understood just how hard making good games is. And how you need someone with a big picture view of the project or you get... The Mess Colossus. Too many long cutscenes, nonsense upon nonsense, awful humour and annoying characters and then the gameplay... The level designers must've been asleep.
I think what made wolf 2 go down into the pooper was the fact it was legit just marvel tier writing. and also the writers fetish disguised as a naked pregnant women covered in blood shooting. and the lack luster ending boss fight.

They kinda did. Like that part from RTCW with that X Labs and Ubersoldiers did happen in the reboot continuity (the escape from castle Wolfenstein and zombie part in the catacombs were remade in the Old Blood). They even stopped the D-Day with their own made tech. It was only when they finally got that jewish tech is when they actually were starting to winning the war.
For some reason that first set of jokes made me imagine a nightmare scenario where your life support is hooked up to a game of tetris and if you lose you die.
Also fun fact: BJ and DeathsHead/TotenKompf/Wilhelm Strauss faced one another before in Return to Castle wolfenstein, BJ in the beginning of Old blood after taking down one of the super soldaten he mentions encountering them in DeathsHead’s X labs which is the labs you encounter the very first super soldaten.
It's a pretty funny and clever gag ngl. Jager is trying to test him, as if he was from Frankfurt he'd have a Hessian dialect, (one that's notoriously hard for foreigners to learn because it slurs words together). BJ, with his terrible German accent is like, I'm hotdog- like he's actually fully aware that he's going to have his accent tested in case he's a spy, and is replying in English sarcastically.
Frankly, my biggest issue with the reboot Wolf, was the severe lack of paranormal element. Besides The Old Blood, of course, but that's why it was my favourite from the reboot era. It's not hard to guess, that RTCW was my favourite in the entire serie.
I also think the models downgraded, the people looked worse and the assets looked a little like free asset grabs. In Max’s room in W2TNC, you can find a modern globe that isn’t the W1TNO world.
Cyberpunk does the 'getting stronger' perfectly. You start of struggeling against random goons on the street to slaugtering maxtac (which is like the SWAT team if they did crack, had the full americans military budget for 6 guys and a bit of scifi magic)
Hmm… let’s take this extremely somber and emotional game and make it a quirky action-comedy with a cast of zany characters. Everyone knows that Wolfenstein is famous for its humor
Frankfurter* In german, you can add "-er" at the end to say where someone is from, same thing applies to the sausage. But in english, Frankfurter is the name of the sausage, so that's why. If someone asked if you were a Hamburger, you probably would be confused why they're calling you a burger and not if they're asking you if you're from Hamburg.
I never actually finished New Order. It was sold on me as old school shooter in new tech, but what I got instead was game that possibly wanted to replicate what old shooters were like, but was not allowed to leave their AAA baggage behind: slow movements, lots of cutscenes, walking expositions, "Press E to keep playing", pointless "stealth" sections. Old Blood improved gameplay-to-bullshit ratio significantly, though it was still there. Sure, zombie level was a slog, stealth level was insulting, but more often then not it would let me actually enjoy the game with no interruptions. And I loved first villain/boss when he comes at you in power armor screaming bloody murder because you killed his dog.
Pro Tip: You can pretty much just run through that stealth section in OB. All but one of the guards aren't fast enough to follow you to the door locks, and you can easily lure that guard behind a generator so he doesn't have LoS on the lock. You can skip a huge chunk of the dock stealth section if you just strafe jump onto the boat and if you b-line for the lever, you can get through that area in

Man I remember I got this on 360 from a pawn shop. Came on like 4 discs. Beat it, loved it. Then I saw that foundry teaser for DOOM 2016 and immediately realized that they made it all of the run and gun sections of Wolf. It got me so hyped and made me so obsessed with DOOM 2016 that I not only played Wolf on repeat to practice but also led to me being one of the first people to beat 2016 UN on Xbox.
Great compilation of a fun series! I think Machinegames unfortunately learned the absolutely wrong lesson from The new Order. The new colossus doubled down on the funny bits too much while also being afraid to show any actual hard hitting atrocities like the first game. I was honestly shocked that the same team made this game.
I'm genuinely surprised you did not talk about the heartwarming scene after the dream breakout of his mom forgiving him and giving him some peace about joining the army
The new order and the old blood are my two favourite fps games of at least the 2010s. I really hope machinegames learns from their mistakes and give us wolfenstein 3. Maybe something where bj kills "evil mustache man" like they say he did in youngblood, and explaining where are Wyatt or Fergus (probably dead)
So Young Blood is like the C&C 4: Tiberian Twilight of the Wolfenstein universe: A universally reviled piece of corporate wank that effectively killed the franchise and left fans eternally bitter and sad.
I may be in the minority, but I hated New Colossus. The game was just not fun, from making you feel week at the beginning, to the controls just feeling clunky. They took BJ and just gimped him. Stark contrast from Doom 2016-Eternal where you felt like an '80s action hero!
@@JohnathanWilliamson849I loved it. Best environments, best gameplay. If you didn't feel like an action hero playing The new Colossus, you were doing it wrong.

Not 10 minutes in and I'm already smiling. I'm so happy you giving Wolfenstein: The New Order the recognition it deserves as It was a game that not only set the groundwork for DOOM (whilst not becoming a mere prototype), it was also home to some of Mick Gordon's best work as a composer. If people listen to his work on killer instinct 2013 (seasons 1 and 2) and Wolfenstein: The New Order's soundtracks, you not only realize Mick was more than qualified to work on DOOM's music, but also that a soundtrack can indeed be an important component in a game's development (not the most necessary but it's like a burger that's just a patty between two slices of bread. Great sandwich, but not a burger) I love TNO and have always been amazed that it doesn't get more recognition because it is indeed, brilliant. Not flawless by any means but it's definitely one of the best shooters I've played in recent history with a banging soundtrack. Duel wielding is also fun as all hell and Dwight Schultz is brilliantly terrifying as Deathshead.
I remember playing the new order on the 360. It was a great game but I remember even on that console. The graphics were so good it actually made me feel dizzy or discombobulated at first. still to this day one my favorite games to go and replay

The New Order and The New Colossus are close to my favorite games of all time. The Old Blood is right up there with them. Youngblood is very meh.
great video man but sometimes the editing was distractingly repetitive, if I took a shot everytime you used the hands out or thumbs up stock image I would have died of alcohol poisoning
Dude you are so right. People don't talk about Wolfenstein 2017 enough. It's such a fun game. I admit, I was the same. I overlooked it because I didn't hear people talk about it much. Then a friend loaned me his disk, and it blew me away.
Found this video thanks to the youtube feed, and I am honestly so happy to see someone extensively cover the reboots, they're not just not talked about ENOUGH, I feel like they're not talked about AT ALL, barely anyone mentioned it aside from obligatory Gman I think. At least I remember people talking more about how much of a slop Youngblood ended up being. It's like "if you thought New Colossus was bad, hold my beer" situation there. Edit: I am extremely sad that what we got was Youngblood in the end. Modern AAA-gaming consumed this franchise like a plague. First it was the marvel-esque writing in NC, and then lifebars, same low bar of writing and damage numbers in Youngblood. Feels like they just wanted to have playable female characters, but didn't know how to make it work. Should've just let it rest after New Order and Old Blood DLC. Wait till the time this franchise could've gotten something much better, something it truly deserved when it comes to getting a sequel that holds up to the bar that New Order has set. Loved the video, subbed, bell is on, I'm looking forward to more things as I watch some of the other videos you've got.
You know, out of everything The New Order shocked me with? No it wasn't the unapologetic visuals of Gore, the enemy faction, not the dark themes or even the twist at the end. No. What caught me by surprise was the sus scene. I wasn't expecting a sussy scene in the game lol.
New colossus had SOOOO MUCH potential! Seeing it's E3 trailer in 2017 is what actually made me check out new order which I loved and made me REALLY want to get my hands on colossus and I was so disappointed....

Cool video man but the thing you were saying around the 10 minute mark about the nazis being so much smarter and having better tech is an utter misconception created partly by a lot of WW2 media wanting to have an 'underdog' story about fighting the nazis. In reality they were hilariously incompetent with their tanks being prone to breakdowns and hard to produce. Their impressive victory in France was one part dumb luck, one part french incompetence and one part literal meth. That's why this game has to resort to giving them literal science fiction tech to make them win the war. It's good for what it is but please don't act like it has any basis in reality. If you didn't mean it like that, I apologize for the misunderstanding.
Although not intentional this long form video really highlights the creeping introduction of DEI into the series, does make you wonder if the same happened to the dev team leading to quality drop off.
Must have been why games since 2016 have been on a slow but accelerated decline. I mean, just look at how MANY games got abandoned in one year because of DEI. Back then it was just once every few years.
As a german Wolfenstein obviously wasnt a great seller here so I mostly watch videos like this. Of course the americans can have way more freedom using symbols that are essential forbidden to show in germany for good reasons. But great supercut here :) The concept of the Nasties winning 2nd WW is unique and gets portrayed very serious in the first games but almost comically in The New Colossus. But The New Colossus is one of the wackiest inconsistent sequels out there anyway...
For me, it's funny that relics from dead empires when, depend on context, are considered "taboo". Now I don't advocate for any of them but simply banning the symbols for fear of people building the same thing is ridiculous as there have been many more horrid empires committing more war crimes than WW2.
@@thientuongnguyen2564I agree that banning symbols is ultimately pointless but since the nasties were German it's probably allot more personal to them since it's apart of they'r history, a very dark and twisted stain on theyr history unlike us in the u.s who's only history with the nasties is fighting them here and there. (Our top priority was Japan at the time so I'm not sure how many battles we had with the nasties.)
I actually love Wolfenstein: Old Blood, New Order and New Colossus, i like young blood but it’s not something I would play daily. But I do feel bad for Youngblood, it did not age well.
Might be 4 months late to the party (this video), but I'm glad I still arrived. I recently got the Wolfenstein reboot games on sale during the Steam summer sale, and played the hell out of the first 3 (Haven't played Young Blood yet, but despite it's reviews I want to at least give it a shot). Honestly, I'm blown away by the games, and have come to appreciate them immensely. I find it ironic that DOOM takes the credit in most cases, and furthermore the power-trip gameplay/idea of DOOM actually has a negative effect on playing through the first 3 of the Wolfenstein Reboot games. Even though BJ is a hulking tank, he is still a man. I found that putting myself into the shoes of BJ, playing a little more restrained, focusing more on weak-points (which are ABSOLUTELY BUSTED in W:TNO), actually enhanced my enjoyment of the game 10-fold. DOOM's OST tends to be fast-paced all the time, but the deliberate choice of having the music in the Wolfenstein Reboot "ramp-up" as the action does, kind-of speaks to the gameplay loop. It's not 100% running and gunning, nor is it 100% stealth. In fact, the "stealth" portions I find are much more fun if you go in saying "Okay, lets *try* to get an officer, but have a plan if it goes haywire". I consider that moment a "set-up" phase to the action. Putting yourself somewhere favorable for the combat and forcing the arena to go loud has lead to some kickass moments. Unfortunately you can just ninja through it all if you choose. But at the end of the day, who's gonna say "no" to killing Nazi scum?
Wolfenstein the new order is the closest game I've ever felt, got the closest to feeling like a Quentin Tarantino movie, from the over the top characters/gore/action and by gosh that soundtrack. Perfection.
For me, it didn't make a damn sense as Blazkowicz's old man looked distinctively American and while his mum was implied to be Jewish, it's still weird when BJ looked nothing like his old man, for he has Polish ancestry.
fun fact: you can kill the machine in the beginning, just like you can shoot a bunker out which has machine guns/turrets, even Fergus has a voiceline which can be heard if you shoot the bunker out (or at least that's what i remember)
The combat in New Order needs to be studied. Between the sound, kick and impact of the guns and the gore and ragdolls I don’t think I’ve played a game with as satisfying as New Order.
It's pretty funny to think of Halo having a two weapon limit due to a lack of keys for quick swapping when the OG Xbox controller had an extra two buttons that neither the Ps2, Gamecube or later consoles would have. In addition to start, select and the four face buttons it also had a pair of small buttons, one white and one black that were dropped for the 360 onward. The Duke could accomodate quick swapping a larger weapon loadout than any standard controller before or since
It's not a part of a reboot but a part of the franchise. And for some it was kinda big part. And yet only wolf 3d was mentioned in history part. I've played wolfenstein 3d on 80286 and then when RTCW came out it was big, sure, not a perfect game but it was fun. I'll be honest, I had more fun playing rtcw than any of the rebooted games.
@@benjaminzarkhin1293 Thing is, The Old Blood is one huge nod to the RTCW itself. Escaping the castle's dungeon. Your other agent getting shocked during interrogation, the cable train ride, the town, catacombs, zombies. Hell you can even hear the classi "aroooga" base alarm in one of the sections. And the main Naughty baddie, Helga von Bulow, is an obvious nod to Helga von Schabbs. Both being overweight officers of SS Paranormal Division, who got killed by a monster they had awakened.
And considering the Nazis got a lot of their tech from finding said super tech, means that the nazis had an actual legit reason to hate since they found everyone was being secretly manipulated from the shadows. Old Blood improved gameplay-to-bullshit ratio significantly, though it was still there. Sure, zombie level was a slog, stealth level was insulting, but more often then not it would let me actually enjoy the game with no interruptions. Pro Tip: You can pretty much just run through that stealth section in OB. All but one of the guards aren't fast enough to follow you to the door locks, and you can easily lure that guard behind a generator so he doesn't have LoS on the lock.

Perfection.
I love this video, I've watched the original new order video when It came out, but this was awesome, good jokes, epic explaining and based opinions
Bj,s father is the definition of a drunk abusef father
For me, it didn't make a damn sense as Blazkowicz's old man looked distinctively American and while his mum was implied to be Jewish, it's still weird when BJ looked nothing like his old man, for he has Polish ancestry.
@@thientuongnguyen2564 The ol' your grandchildren won't even look like you prophecy.
@@thientuongnguyen2564 just feels too forced
fun fact: you can kill the machine in the beginning, just like you can shoot a bunker out which has machine guns/turrets, even Fergus has a voiceline which can be heard if you shoot the bunker out (or at least that's what i remember)
The Duke could accomodate quick swapping a larger weapon loadout than any standard controller before or since
Wait... talking about wolfenstein and not mentioning Return to Casle Wolfenstein is a crime!
It isn't technically part of the reboot franchise, although it's an absolute classic.
I'd argue that skipping RTCW in The Old Blood section, is like skipping the Wolf 3D, while making an essay on history of Wolfenstein.
Honestly good to see some long form content on youtube like this
Happy birthday !!!!!

Holy sht i just noticed that
@Yunomilesbackup I just happened to keep missing that part and replaying It because I kept losing focus. I noticed it and was like no way they payed that much attention to detail, I'm impressed
