Also, the theatrical ending is brilliant. Dunn is put in an impossible situation - a man of honour shamed, publically. He has no choice but to commit suicide, and he does so totally realistically. The jolt caused by his decision is unsettling, and creates a strange sort of sympthy - pity too, I suppose - with the man.
Thanks for making this video. Snake Eyes was the first major Hollywood film I worked on. I was a production assistant, and was on set daily for 6 weeks, in Montreal. The one-shot opening scene took in fact two whole weeks to shoot. Some takes had to be done up to 30 times. During filming, every one who had read the script, including myself, thought that the ending with the tidal wave and the globe crushing Sinise's character was ridiculous. I was there when the stunt doubles practiced the scene with the globe along with the water rushing in, it was a huge rig that went 30 feet up with a giant water tank on top. But I didn't see the actual filming of that scene. When they announced later that they were reshooting the ending, it came as no surprise to any of us. What was surprising was how much dumber that new ending was. At least the original one would have been more spectacular. Also, what you said about the confusion with the two Kevin Dunn's is absolutely true. It happened even to me many times. For example, the actor's trailers do not have the name of the actor on the door, but that of the character they play, so there was some confusion there for sure. I could go on with little factoids, but I'll just say that at the time, Nic Cage's next movie after that was supposed to be Tim Burton's Superman.
@@andrewcutler1380 A bunch of stuff, pretty much all flops despite starring some of the biggest movie stars in the world. Among them, Pluto Nash, ever heard of it?
In the original script, the entire 3rd Act is after the tidal wave, though, with a chase through out the Casino as it fills with water. It was all very Hitchcockian. I loved it and was definitely sad to see it go.
I saw this when it came out really liked it at the time, but always wondered why the storm was set up so much with no payoff. Thanks for finally explaining it :)
I know, right! They kept foreshadowing that globe-like structure rolling moving around in the storm, and I was waiting for it to come into play. Now I understand why it never did.
I was an extra on set during the filming of Snake Eyes. I can confirm that at least 12 minutes was filmed in one fluid take. I remember that day because Nicholas Cage and the rest of us had to perform the sequence about 22 times. After the last take Cage said he is not doing another take, and that somewhere is the over 20 takes done is a good one.
GOD bless background huh?? sometimes the unsung heros. My VERY FIRST day of background was 2 years ago, working on an episode of The Righteous Gemstones in Moncks Corner, SC. I was "chosen" , meaning I was the last background extra to be used, to run past a fallen Steve Zahn during a bank robbery scene. 30-40 takes, between 3 separate camera set ups and he was like, "Are we done yet?".....I worked a few weeks on the series and saw nothing but complete professionalism by ALL involved. Season 4 shooting has started, and I am hoping to work again this summer
@@Studeb We were well over 300 extras that day. The main bunch of us was about 100 or so, with many of us having to be there for over a month for continuity. The rest were made up of people who were there just for that day and were given a chance at winning a prize at the end of the day. If memory serves me right, I think it was a car or something. It took several minutes to reset because Nicholas Cage had to reset all the way back to his first position, which was outside of the stadium in the hallways. We on the inside of the stadium had to wait a few minutes for Cage get to the point in the flow where he entered. Then he walked around the boxing ring talking to various characters. I was lucky enough to be placed right along side the ring as one of the announcers.
Thank you for blowing my mind again. I never knew the original ending so the movie I saw in theaters didn't leave me impressed. I wish studios trusted filmmakers more.
I remember renting Snake Eyes and being somewhat amused by it. It was an average movie that could’ve been great with the original ending. It’s a shame that test audiences have such pull usually. They’re not always right!
It's true I would love to see the original ending restored, and maybe it will be someday. De Palma seems to regret changing it (also Sinise reportely didn't like the original). But Snake Eyes is too much fun to compare it to the disastrous Bonfire of the Vanities. I'll never understand why the ending of this film gets crucified so harshly, yet the ending of Die Hard with a Vengeance (in fact the whole 3rd act) is forgiven.
I haven't seen this one since I saw it on opening weekend, it's time for a rewatch soon. Now, I don't know if the film would've been successful had they stuck with the original ending, I think it fail because people were just tired of seeing Nick Cage playing the same type of character. He had a great run at the box office with The Rock, Con Air and Face/Off but then his box office draw came to a stop in 1998 and 1999.
I read the original script back in the day prior to production. The script, with the tidal wave ending, was MUCH better than the final product. That tacked on ending with the Sinise suicide was atrocious.
Snake Eyes is brilliant for the first 40 minutes. I think the moment the whole thing goes to 💩is the reveal of who the villain is and the whole reason for it which makes totally no sense. I think if they'd kept the mystery going till towards the end and made a change to some of the plotting, it would have been a classic.
Wow that was some bad luck for the real Kevin Dunn. I'd be offended & demand a better stay after that. It was rude of them to bump him down like that over their mistake.✌️-Jennifer Dylans' mom 😋
I remember that gorgeous redhead deffo! Listen i was a young man with hormones i cant deny it. Nic Cage was loving every minute and Gary Sinise is always good.. Decent thriller..
I saw this movie in the Cinema. The trailer was pretty interesting making it seem like lots of twists and turns in a suspenseful thriller. When i went to see the movie, the first 20 minutes was good, but then every twist was already in the trailer, yet no payoff for the huricane chatter and it kinda ruined the whole thing for me.
De Palma has a unique penchant for abruptly baffling endings that fail to stick the landing. I doubt the deus ex machina conclusion would have satisfied either.
I need to give SNAKE EYES a rewatch. I saw it at the time and loved it except for the ending. Not sure about the biblical ending tough because it robs the protagonist of any agency. The hero doesn't save the day...God does.
I still watch MOST of this movie when I see it on. I usually enjoy it until Nick Cage's character meets up with the Julia in the hotel room, but yeah, after that, meh till the very end.
"Snake Eyes" is also a gambling term for rolling a 2 with ones only on each die. Might be worth noting because the film takes place at a casino and involves gambling, not only literally but figuratively. Come on, Jo Blo, get it together!! 😁
Nothing happened to it yet Konami still won't hit anything in it to slow it down.... we're taking about two different snake eyes.... I'll see myself out.... sorry...
The movie was so confusing. Didn’t know what happened. And came to a point where I wanted it to end. 1st half was good but 2nd half was boring and stupid. Why did Gary Senise have to kill himself? Nicholas Cage wasn’t even a good guy in the film. 😮
so, a movie casting Christianity in different light and exposing truth's was altered and made unwatchable by "the power's that be", but it's truth still made it to the light. Sound's like Good v Evil. Light vs Dark. Buried (or attempted) like passion, sound of freedom, etc...
The biggest thing I didn't like about Snake Eyes was having the major villain be an obvious reveal instead of developing their relationship with Santoro more.
What are you talking about? This is a great movie! Your summary is total garbage! Everyone I know that has watched it, feels its a hidden gem of a movie. Terrible video from your team.
That "original ending" looks dumb af. Some ex machina globe rolls in randomly to solve the big problem? Booo. I like the ending the way it was released. 🖕🏼

I remember seeing this in theaters as a kid and after Con Air and The Rock I was so pumped for another Nic Cage movie...... And man this movie sucked. Was boring, uneven, confusing......was just so disappointed
Not bad but man you need work on some of your pronunciation . Not hating but if this is your job you are required to be adept at speaking correctly . Good luck Jim. That ending was for believer's not for the sheeple and Paramount needs to amaze the sheeple .
Snake eyes is so slept on, one of my fav nick cage roles right up there with castor troy in face/off
Facts 💯🔥
Snake Eyes is an awesome piece of theatre - a closed-room mystery thriller disguised as a Hollywood blockbuster.
Also, the theatrical ending is brilliant. Dunn is put in an impossible situation - a man of honour shamed, publically. He has no choice but to commit suicide, and he does so totally realistically. I always thought the ending to Snake Eyes was a bit flat. The storm is a bit like a Chekov's gun that never goes off.
I remember seeing this in the theater. I remember the opening and it being awesome overall, but little else.
I enjoy this movie even with the altered ending. Do you think they would ever release a director’s cut with the original ending put back in the film?
Gary Sinise was perfect in his role. Can't imagine anyone else doing it.
I've seen the movie for the first time today and thought it was really good, it's quite underrated! ✨
I have to buy the new 4k version, all ways loved this movie.
So... director's cut?
Is there a cut of the original ending?
Interesting unused ending but how often do tidal waves hit the coast? It seems too far fetched an event. Maybe a lesser scale rogue wave?
Yeah. I've never had a problem with the ending we got. I don't think the tidal wave adds anything.
