As someone who works with A LOT of cast iron I can say these snappers are way better to use than trying to cut with a sawzall or a dusty grinder. These ones are made more for small spaces and comes in handy big time sometimes
Yes, I have one I get from my neighbor along time ago when he retired from plumbing. It’s one of those things that I may not use it much but it’s there. Just used it last night to replace with a section of PVC. My hats off to the plumbers of yesterday year I can’t imagine how they would solder those joints in such close spaces.
I flinched at the pop. Like when the toast pops out of the toaster. You know it's coming, but still flinch. Learn something new every day. Thanks for sharing. 👍
Holy moly I'm so glad i watched this. I was tightening it, then swiveling it all around, then tightening it some more, then swiveling. And I got so tired. This saved me so much grief lol
Im a plumbers helper trying to learn the trade - tysm for this video! I know its a little stupid but sometimes these simple things can confound me, and leave me sort of confused without someone going through exactly how to use it. I also had to learn what 'pitch' is the other day. I love plumbing! It makes me feel great about myself, its generative, and im doing something that can make me some money. Blessings from NY!
I initially tried a Sawzall to cut my cast iro 4" main. The pipe just laughed at me as the blade bounced around the top of the pipe and having little effect. Thanks for the concise and clear demonstration.
Perfect timing! I have to replace my broken cast iron waste drain under the house. I REALLY hate using a recip saw in a tight space, but this would be perfect!!
The chain cutter is great but if your pipe are heavily rusted or crumbly use a sawsall. The chain cutter will just crush the pipe. Learned that the hard way $600 and still have to use the old dewalt special.
i dont know anything about house maintenance or anything but what were those pipes for? Are you gonna put new ones now, now that you took the old one out? Or it was in no use anymore and it was just sitting there.
Hey Robert! That was the old vent for the original plumbing of the house. When they moved the bathroom it was not needed so they just cut it and left it so I uncovered it and got rid of it. If you are interested in the full video I put a link in the description of this one. Thanks for watching!
Hello, I am getting ready to install a backwater valve on my 4" Cast iron sewer pipe. The pipe is about a foot below concrete so it has been underground for about 60 years. I've been warned about old pipes cracking when you try to cut them. Does anyone know if this type of pipe cutter will reduce the chance of cracking or should I use a grinder or Sawzall?
Hey! I have heard if the pipe is weakened this tool could crack the pipe. You may be better off getting a high quality metal sawsall blade and cutting it that way. A grinder would work great but there would be a ton of sparks, if that is not a concern then that might be a good option. Hope this helps!
Hey, Joshua. My estimate is that it was about $28 in scrap around where I live. Depends on if it is easier to get rid of as scrap or as trash I guess. I gave it to a friend to scrap. Thanks for watching!

I almost got taken out from a piece of cast iron pipe fitting helping with this thing. I feel like it’s insanely dangerous and scary. I was working with a plumber as a helper. He was cranking the cutters and I was holding the cast iron pipe. My job was to just hold the piece so it didn’t fall. There was no way I could hold it with the amount of force from the cutters. When it popped, the whole cast iron fitting zoomed past my head. It smushed my ear and cut the insides and I was told it would need a suture. Thank God it didn’t take out all my teeth, break my face, knock me out, or something worse. Hate that tool.

I deleted my original comment. I was thinking about it and I think I was wrong. I believe I used my grinder with a cutting blade in the past, not the reciprocating saw. I don't know why I was thinking that. Anyway, I'll say it again: interesting tool.

Very cool. Much respect from another dad who loves picking at his own house with some quality carpentry work
🤜🤛
I just brought this tool today. Awesome tool. No more Grinder
Jobs are so much easier with the right tools. Glad to see you got help for a change LOL ❤
That chain pipe cutter is crazy good!! 👍🏼
"Pretty heavy" is a perfect representation of weight. It ranks right up there with other measurements like "about this or that much" and "yay high"!
🤣🤣
Technical terms! Lol
It is an industry standard abbreviation for "poop first cause you're gonna grunt"
Why did you not rotate the cutter when you tightened down the chain cutter ????
thanks, your video helped me remember how to operate this thing !!! had some 2" C.I. vent pipe to cut out of a wall
Perfect timing! I have to replace my broken cast iron waste drain under the house. I REALLY hate using a recip saw in a tight space, but this would be perfect!!
just smash it with a hammer
Still interesting to see as a brief one-off video. Still makes me flinch!
That helper is dreamy 😂
🤣

Very nice indeed...
Nice. Strange, but enjoyed this very much. Every time the pipe cut I jumped too. Lol.

I love these short highlight reels from the longer videos
Awesome sauce! Wish I had this when we had to remove our pipe.
Damn....that's a wicked tool. Even though you warned us, I still jumped the 1st time. Hope you're scrapping all the pieces to make a few extra bucks.
Great video,thanks
Yay! You finally got it out of there! 👍🏼
To remove cast iron is a nightmare but to install all those pieces using boiling hot lead is another nightmare 🥵
Agreed!
@@TheFixerHomeRepairbut you can use PVC, right?
@@lydiahubbell6278 yes
Lol with how much cast I work with I almost prefer cast iron hub and spigot over pvc
That was cool.
WOWZA!
Even though you warned us, I still jumped. Big smiles over here.
why take it out looked soiled still. does it work that easy on 80yr old thined down rusty pipes
Thanks. I’m getting ready to do this for a bathroom addition. Nice presentation.
(Please wear eye protection)
Would it also be possible to cut Car exhaust pipe with that cutter?
You suppose to turn that back and forth and tight a little at a time like a tubing cutter
Can you cut a 15mm ductile iron pipe finely
And we're going to do it...right now.
That looked fun. Made quick work of that pipe.
Are replacing them or just taking them out?
what is the name of the device you use to cut the pipe?
Saan maka bili nyan?
Porqué no dicen el nombre de las herramientas que usan en los vídeos!
nice slo-mo!!
Awesome tool. ❤
Cool slow motion. 😂

@@TheFixerHomeRepair Thanks for the advice...Having my sewer pipe crack on me doesn't sound like a pleasant experience :)
Is the scrap value? Rather than just tossing it?

Sounds good. I was imagining that maybe you had Saran wrapped the lid closed.
Hi
“Pretty heavy”. Fair enough.
Currently striping out 60year old heating coils from a 700 year old church and let me tell you these cast cutters are a godsend
Good thing Colin is not a builder.😁 "Pretty Heavy"

Couple of those cut pieces would make great BBQ smoker stacks
They're poop pipes
@@Miky_Mittens Oh. Well then not for me but for someone else then.
That was cool. But Matt, those guitars man..........
Great vid but those nails sticking strait up out of the plank on the floor are an absolutely unnecessary hazard.

Yup, that works. No sparks with this though!!
This is only good for cast iron in good condition. Do not use this if your cast iron pipes are very old and rusted. Your whole pipe will crush
Definitely a toilet on the second floor.
👌🏾🤗
if you throwing it away you could have just used a hammer lol
Done that before. Way more effort and pieces go flying like a bullet.
Ugh. Mail those poor guitars to me my dude.
