Nando Parrado is an example of human resiliency, determination and strength. How he overcame losing his mom and sister in the crash, and then leading the mountain trek and ultimately the return and rescue of his friends serves as a powerful inspiration.
Exactly my thought. I watched the movie last night and I’ve thought about Nando since last night. He was determined to make it out alive. He was resilient. Something I aspire to be.
I imagine that he’s very successful & quite wealthy.

We spent 6 month to cames in Europe in the most dangerous mountains than this. But the media will never show us because we are refugee 😢 to leave our loving countries for some reason. Can't imagine the pain of the families of those who survived the crash but eventually died because they were not rescued soon enough.
Also accompanied by the fact that their loved one was probably eaten.

One of my favorite parts of this story is in Nando’s book. Several years after this, Roberto and Nando were revisiting the area they were rescued and snuck up on the rancher who saved them. They said something like ‘sir we are lost can you help’. Even though years had passed he instantly recognized them and wept. Several of the survivors were pallbearers at his funeral when he passed away at 91 years old

That is so sad and so wholesome a the same time. Its so amazing that through all the terrible days after the crash they managed to get something good out of it which is friendship.

@@brianrodriguez6897 from what I heard, they did visit the guy in 2002. There is a old news article about it. they also visited him in 2008 to help fund his leg surgery in his old age. And again they visited him in 2012 to help him with another leg surgery. And then when he passed away in 2020, they carried his casket.

I’m glad they made an actual good and accurate movie to pay tribute to all of the survivors and the dead of this plane crash. I just finished Society of The Snow and it is so much better than Alive.
Same the casting is so on point and the acting is excellent
I think Society of the Snow is better because it's a Spanish production crew. However, the survivors were able to profit from the other movie as they sold the rights to "Alive".
The Uruguayans spoke in Spanish in the movie! How incredible is that?

There are certain situations the human mind cannot comprehend unless you’ve actually been in the exact same situation. That 70 day survival is one we cannot comprehend unless we’ve gone through it. You’d be very surprised what a person will do in order to survive. I praise those men so much. I couldn’t imagine in my entire life going through something like that and surviving! 🙏🏼
I don’t judge them at all. They were out there for months with nothing. What choice did they have? But boy does my skin crawl thinking about it. It must have been incredibly traumatic, I cannot even imagine 😢
@sierram3141 😢😢 Omg I know. Left with absolutely nothing. Being totally abandoned. There was no other way or means for that many people to eat. There was no way to hunt in those conditions. Everything was covered in snow. It makes my skin crawl as well thinking of eating human flesh, but they must’ve had to put their mind in a different place when you’re literally starving. That would be incredibly traumatizing for me 🥺
I don't know man,
something gives me the feeling it wasn't as survival inclined as it's told, as in:
"let's not waste the dead, that died in the crash and all by themselves and eat them"...
But instead more, like :
"We've run out of the dead from the crash and we have to eat someone, who are we going to sacrifice?"
I think a situation like that brings out the beast in men, a darker side.
They all knew each other and they decided to make a pact not to admit such a dark secret, but i know for sure they took a life or 2 during that time.
They not only feasted on the dead, but they killed a couple people,listen to that Freudian slip when he says trying to convince himself he's not a monster:
"To give your LIFE to feed others so they could live "

look at the picture and you can notice a spinal cord to the right of the picture next to a bottle, and they were so casual and taking pictures, and they didn't even look all that skinny or anything when found !!
These guys were in complete control of the situation and well fed for the time they spent out there and what they went through

but I just know it wasn't as they say it was and they show it this way because of course; they did it cause they needed to survive, but once back in the world the family members of the weaker ones wouldn't be so understanding if the knew their loved one was alive and might have made it back but was hit with a rock and butchered or something
It for sure was darker, there was another film apart from the society of snow and alive, a 3rd film much older, that showed it how I believe it happened, it showed them fighting and being savage.
Since I have heard of this story I wanted to call my son Nando, so impressed i was by the strength and resilience he (and the rest) showed... My little Nando is already three years old 😊 and I keep on coming back to this story for that strength.
That's a beautiful tribute.
But I just want to point out that I hope you know that Nando is not a name as such. It is the diminutive form of a complete name: Fernando.
It's like Kate from Katherine or Brad from Bradley.
I know, half my family is Mexican😊 so my son's full name is Fernando, but we call him Nandito, which is a Spanish diminutive

I can't get enough of this incredible story. 2 movies, 2 books. Amazing they made it out.
I was always intrigued by their story. They did what they needed to do to survive. Strong men 💪
I can appreciate documentaries like this while some survivors are here to tell the story. These men are so incredibly brave.
What a strong character to walk off that mountain and save the rest from death.
I highly recommend his book, Miracle in the Andes. I’ve read a lot of books about survival situations and his is the best. The epilogue alone is worth the price of the book.
The love, and compassion they should towards each other was amazing
I remember hearing this story many years ago and waiting to be able to see a film that captured their story of their survival, faith and their humanity. I always thought about the harrowing notion of what it would be like to have to choose to eat the only thing left and how that impacted their psyche and love for each other. This film is an absolute masterpiece and one of Bayona's best work alongside "The Impossible". I commend all the actors on their incredible performance and representing the people of this disaster, both those that survived and those that became the life-force for them. What a devastatingly beautiful and powerful story of the human spirit, I could not stop crying throughout this film, it was so moving. Thank you!
I dont need the " adventure experts" thanks, they were barely born and have never done anything like it. Especially as we have the real survivors talking

This special 2 hour show had me mesmerized from start to finish. I remember hearing about this terrible crash, but was too young to really comprehend.
Now that I’ve seen it, I simply cannot comprehend anything! Nothing. I’m beyond thinking how these people survived - and what transpired from the crash to the rescue.
I just have no words. They are heroes in my eyes and I am glad I got to see what brave people they were.

Ive lived in Colorado and in reno, the extreme cold, especially in a dryer mountain climate will really mess up your skin with constant exposures. I cant go one day without putting on lotion, i cant imagine being outside with no heater, no lotion, no food. These guys are tougher than nails.
I live in AK & also thought of the dry and not having my lotion... I mean on top of it, that solidifies the hell for me 😖

I don't think the hardest thing was eating a human being but eating a friend and someone you knew and the dread of surviving and ging back to tell their family what happened to their loved one

It was not until I saw Society of the Snow that I learned about this remarkable story. It’s a true miracle and shows the determination of the human will.
I had watched Alive years ago. Recently watched the Society of the Snow. You can't really think mother nature could be so cruel, handing them one ordeal after another. I give my love to all of them. We should be in awe of these brave men.

I watched it last night on Netflix. I love Survivor movies but this one hit differently, especially because it is a true life story. RIP to the dead.

I remember watching a film on this as a kid in the early 90s called alive, just watched the new film and it’s just as shocking

I mean no disrespect to Nando, I am in awe of him. But his father…who they named the mountain they climbed after him, sold his possessions including his prized motorcycle and his clothes within a week or so after the plane disappeared. And remarried if I have it right. I could never wrap my head around that. Man lost his wife and 2 out of 3 of his children and moved on way too quickly. Paez was out there for weeks using his own resources to find his one son and this man who lost 3/4 of his immediate family didn’t do anything but erase them from his life. Incredibly sad
He didn't get married then. Nando said his father slept hugging Nando's dog, because it was the only thing left of his family. It was reasonable that everybody thought they were dead.

This story changed my life
The Strauch cousins are hardened men, to be able to cut up their friends they are mentally hardened beyond comprehension. They saved everyone there, did what nobody else would do, truly strong willed individuals.
I love how they introduce 2 survivors then let other people tell their story 🤦♂️

At the end of the movie ( society of the snow), I couldn't stop my tears, and since then, I feel goosebumps whenever I watch a documentary about them. I love how much they support each other and how they stand against death together, I like the words the survivors keep saying ( brothers from the mountains) really attitude is the best evidence of love ❤ so inspiring story from this heroes.

I get that cannibalism was necessary for them to stay alive... But the complete lack of reverence for the skeletal remains was next level
The human instict to survive and live is so strong these man had to do what they had to do to survive and live with it.

I was a kid in the 80s and my Dad told me the story of what these guys went through. They're all real life heroes. These people were dead.

Thinking of the survivors, and the victims, who perished during the Andes Plane Crash, that occurred on Friday, October 13, 1972, (51) years ago today.😢
I watched the 20/20 special, "Prisoners Of The Snow," in May, 2023, regarding this plane crash. I have this stored, on my DVR. The first time that I heard about this plane crash, was in (2012), when they had the (40th) anniversary Documentary.😔
The survivors, and most of the victims, were so young, between 19 and 22, when this plane crash occurred in (1972). I am amazed, at how a few of the survivors, walked for days and days, in the cold, and up a Mountain, to get help. Bless the farmer, and his son, for providing food to these guys, and phoning for help!👍 I cried, while watching the Documentary, when they came upon the farmer, and his son, who helped them, and when the survivors were finally flown off of the Andes Mountain, and back home to their loved ones.🙏
Some people, over the years, have expressed disgust, because the survivors had to resort to cannibalism. If you want to survive, in this World, you do what you have to. I applaud these survivors, for letting the World know, that they "wanted to live." As in the (1992) Movie, "Alive," which is about this (1972) plane crash. All of the (16) survivors, are still ALIVE, and they are in their early 70's, except that one of the survivors, passed away due to Cancer, several years ago. The remaining survivors, said that they STILL meet on the Anniversary, EVERY year, of the plane crash.🤗 They are now, bonded for life. Again, thinking of you guys, on the (51st.) Anniversary, of the Andes Mountain Plane Crash.😒
People who say they would never do this must not love anyone or have anyone depend on them. I can't imagine anything I wouldn't do to make it back for my family!

In the movie you can hear the pilot say they are 3 minutes from landing in Chile. Assuming they knew this, If they started trekking from day 1 they all possibly would have made it to Chile in 10 days. Tip for anyone ever in survival situation, never stay in the same spot, they tell you to sit and wait but that’s such a bad idea. Wait for 1 or maybe 2 days, if they haven’t found you, they aren’t going to. Immediately start heading in the direction of civilization.

Now almost 52 years has been passed and if now Government offer you a chance to go there to see that place where your plane crashed...What will be your reply will go to see that place or no.

did they ever find the other half of the plane?
We’re any uneaten bodies recovered?
did they keep track of who they ate?
Two of the guys found the tail section.
All the bodies, eaten or not, were buried in a common grave.
Some of the survivors know who they ate, but it is a secret kept between them.
@@fastica Not sure if it’s true, someone posted this info elsewhere. He stated that the pilot & copilots bodies were so pinned by the wreckage that they decided to douse the fuselage with gas and burn it while cremating their remains at the same time. It does sound plausible but I haven’t read anything about it in the 3 books I have about this incident.
Also, the father of Ricardo Echavarren had arranged to have his sons body identifiable as he had found out he wanted his body returned for burial at home. The father arranged for help and did retrieve his sons body. Got into a bit of trouble being accused of grave robbing. It was eventually sorted out and he brought his son home.
Has anyone interviewed the family of the ones that got ate to ask them how they feel? Not saying its wrong or right but just curious to what they would say
Hi! We know that the Nicolich (Coco’s) family has always been openly supportive of the survivorsz Maybe having Coco’s letters, in which he explicitly consents to his body being eaten if he died helped..
Others had a harder time and distanced themselves, but I don’t think any of them has actually spoken up against what the survivors did. Instead, they chose to honor the victims via a library/NGO they made together. The ones running the library have a good relationship with at least one survivor, Gustavo Zerbino, who was the one who brought them the keepsakes from the victims back from the mountains.
When they give interviews (ie Alejandro Roque, Roque’s son; Raquel Arocena, Coco’s mother; Stella Pérez del Castillo, Marcelo’s sister; Selva Ibarburu, Maquirrian’s mother; Teresa Valeta, Valeta’s sister; Baty Echavarren, El Vasco’s sister), they tend to focus more on the memories of their loved ones, and on the ways they could overcome what happene, rather than the feelings about the means of survival.
When it comes to eating human flesh, they said everyone watching the movies and the documentaries would do the same in their place. As much as some people say they wouldn't do that under any circumstance, yes you would. Of course we'd do the same. At some point our (very powerful) survival instincts take the wheel and you'll eat.
I recommend watching "The Snow Society". Amazing movie!

When they were trapped under the snow for four days before they pulled themselves out, where did they go to the bathroom? I am so sensitive to smell, I'd rather die.

These guys didn’t have weather gear either… me when it drops below 60 degrees I’m freezing and putting on extra sweaters…. I would have not survived in that situation

Hunger has no religion, your primal instinct will overcome any religion. Fight for life is the only thing that will keep you alive. Their dead friends gave them the life.

What a search crew, flew right over the crash and saw nothing. Do they not have binoculars when looking? How good and equipped were the search crew? Where the fully vested in finding the accident site? Some people are such disappointment. What these guys went through was unnecessary and preventable, nevertheless, more people would have survived.
