If your worried about epa regulations, The second tube on the factory tank is an internal vent line from the filler. With the aftermarket tanks, you run the vent line from the cap in its place to stay in compliance. So your still useing the factory emissions equipment. Luckily my state doesn't check cause you drop a few pounds deleting it and the pair valve.
Thanks for watching. There is something very soothing and relaxing with the little things roaming around in the yard honestly. My dogs are great friends with the chickens too. Cheers. Nik
Your video is super helpful and i am planning on doing this same thing to my 2022 DRZ 400s ca model tomorrow. My only question i have is does the vent line that you are running by the swing arm connect to the gas cap or where are you venting it from.
How does all the gas get used? Wouldn't some tend to sit unused at the bottom of at least one side of the tank? Also what about those extra tanks you can carry?
That's a good question. It doesn't actually. On my Honda XR with an Acerbis gas tank, the two parts are connected and there is a petcock on both sides. Tha ks for watching and participating in the conversation.
Really enjoying your videos, thank you for so much detail! It's too bad this tank is such a pain to fit, I don't want to have to force anything into place, I love the design of them otherwise. Any long term reviews of this bike with the IMS tank installed?
Thank you for taking the time to comment, complement and ask. I actually ended up selling the bike because I replaced it with a KTM - SXC625 - same weight but more power and overall better reperformance. But with a 2 gallon tank it only get around 70 miles so it also will need a bigger tank. Please stay tuned for more ADV thumper reviews. Cheers - Nik
Yes, the gas is diapered on the sides and lowered with this tank. The design does a good job preventing the gas from sloshing around, and perhaps a second side petcock would have been good in order to be able to sip off every last drop. Thanks for watching. The next review releasing will be of the royal Enfield Himalayan which also uses a 411cc engine so please consider subscribing to get notified.
I would like to know how many miles this tank give, over the stock one. With the stock tank on my all stock drz I do around 80 to 100milles before reserve.
Well, the stock fuel capacity for the DRZ is 2.6 gallons. IMS makes two larger tanks, 3.2 and 4 gallons. So you can calculate mileage that way. Safariland also makes desert tanks that can be very large.
Very useful and entertaining, thanks for putting it up. Seeing the tank close up on here I'm not much impressed with the build quality for the price, but good to see you didn't have to make any major adjustment/adaptation to make it fit (apart from the California legal stuff which fortunately we don't have to worry about here, not yet anyway). I've put Acerbis plastics on my 2005 DRZ400S. Had to do a little cutting to get the rear fender to fit (I think the kit I bought was designed for the E model) but the build quality is really good. I see Acerbis do a 14 litre tank for the DRZ400S, has anyone experience of these versus IMS tanks in terms of quality and fit?
Glad you found the video valuable. Next time I would definitely opt for the Acerbis tank (Partly cause you can see the feel line) and mostly due to the build quality, since my seat always would pop out of the tooth that is intended to hold it down. It got very annoying. Although these bikes are pretty good with gas mileage, if the goal is to build a proper ADV touring bike, I would opt in for the largest of the options since the weight difference is 2 litters (4 pounds) between the 14liter and 4 gallon. Best of luck to you and thanks for participating in the conversation.
Not sure if you ever got a response from IMS but on mine the instruction sheet says it’s for non street use only. Too bad I didn’t see that before purchasing it.
I think that's a standard legal disclaimer. Most motorcycles will have the same disclaimer - not intended for off-road use ( at least in the manual). The desert tank doesn't have an overflow safeguard.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours OK, understood. However I assume it’s still not going to pass CA smog after install unless there’s a workaround to the issue with the CA emissions canister, yeah? Thanks for the response!
@@keithanderson6358 motorcycles aren't subject to smog checks like passenger vehicles. I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble for removing their canister. It would have to be a very bad day for the park ranger or cop that chooses to look so deeply into it.
No actually - I simply reused the stock one. Please stay tuned, the next video that's coming out is a carb cleaning tutorial for this bike, so please consider subscribing to be notified. Cheers - Nik

Thanks for that clarification.
Well done video. Luckily you had your chickens helping you on this one.

I just sold my x challenge and got a DRZ, a little bit of a trip to see it in the background
Interesting change. O sold my x challenge to get the KTM 690 Enduro r, and now I'm on the 790. Tha is for watching and sharing.

@@pegasusmotorcycletours Good to know. If i get an SM then i may also look into the Rotopax as they look interesting.

Did you notice a difference in handling when tank was half full? I figure the center of mass would feel lower, like a KTM

Looking at the 3.2 IMS fuel tank - are you using the Raptor petcock?
