      Thanks for being here and glad you found it valuable. I made two more videos re: DRZ. one on the desert tank install tutorial and another on how to clean the carb. I do hope you stick around for other 3 reviews in the 650 category still remaining (XR650, Xchallenge, and SXC625), including the new KLR650 (in conversation with Kawasaki right now to get my hands on one). Safe travels and till next time - Nik

    I’ve been researching dual sports and ADV bikes for about a year now. I’ve printed spreadsheets and torque numbers I’ve researched everything form the 250L - Husqvarna 701 and beyond. I have always come full circle to the DRZ400 and every time I say to myself keep researching... I think it’s time to get my first bike and it’s going to be a DRZ400

      Have you looked into the KTM SXC625? I ask because although the numbers tell one story, the actual performance can be so very different. I would say try the KTM (or wait from my review - I am in love with this bike and amazed at the performance - same wight but much more powerful). Thanks for being here and for participating in the conversation - I look forward to hearing about what you ultimately chose. Cheers - Nik

      It’s a great bike for serious off road. The Tenere 700 may be a better value if you plans to spend more time on road than off. I have the v85tt for touring. Shovel head for cruising.

    • @mikeborrelli193

      @@DKrappenschitzADV and dual sport is very niche. For the price of that KTM you could buy a $3.5K DRZ and a $2.5K SV650 or Suzuki Bandit and still spend less than that KTM. Dual Sports are a blast but it's nice to also have a dedicated street bike for riding with other people with street bikes.. If you go out with a group of guys on cruisers or any street only bikes over 500cc you will struggle to keep up without straining the bike and dual sports are fatiguing after an hour or so upright in the wind at 70mph. If all you can afford is one bike and you really want it to be dirt capable it's hard to beat the value of the DRZ, if you want a great street bike that can do mile trail and fire roads look into a used 650 Vstrom.

    Outstanding review! I own a 2021 DRZ and I love it. Do I consider it a great Adventure Touring bike. Probably not. Do I consider it a great Dual-sport or Enduro Bike. Heck Yes! The drz is a tractor. If you are short legged less than 34” beware of seat height. You will need a new seat 345.00. Pannier mounts and bags 500 and up. Change the rear tire to a 50/50 or more aggressive. Radiator guards 150.00. The down side is Touring the bike struggles above 65. Fuel range is around 110 miles before reserve. My other bike is a V85TT. Oh and sand loves speed deep sand loves more speed.

    Great review! The most honest I’ve seen for this bike! You’re the first person I’ve heard that hasn’t whined about the wait. Last bike I had was a 750 pound cruiser, Yamaha V*1100. I live in the Northeast, specifically Vermont and my choice has been between the DR 650 and a DRZ 400. I’ve made my choice and it’s going to be the DRZ 400. I currently own a Honda XR 400 but the wheelbase is a little shorter so it’s a little Squirrley on the pavement and it would cost me about $2000 to put an electric start on it. Thanks again, I have subbed Looking forward to more reviews! Cheers from Vermont!

      Greetings and thanks for being here - glad the review was helpful. You won't go wrong with the DRZ, especially if you are coming from a similar bike already. The other bike that I've recently been riding is a KTM 625 SXC - and it too is in the 300lb range, but has a kick start as well as electric, and is just incredibly torquey. If you see one, check it out before making a purchase, but keep in mind parts and maintenance is more diffiicult. Good luck to you.

    Great video. I own a klx250s and my brother owns a drz400s. We have done thousands of miles at 70 mph with stock gearing and also 14-44 gearing. It has been a great bike. My 250 is a little underpowered on tarmac above 60 mph; the drz always has enough power even at 10,000+ feet above sea level. I am thinking of getting a drz because it is the smallest cc and lightest bike that does eveything I want to do.

    Great review...super thorough, thanks! Wow, 37inches is high - I'm 5-8 as well with 30in inseam sounds like that would be a stretch for me...I rode the DRZ SM and that was ok but it sits lower on the smaller wheel size but also has stiffer suspension. My Triumph is 32in and perfect, hard to imagine an extra 5in in seat height...

      Hi there. Thanks for being here, and glad you found it valuable. Yes, the bike is tall, but the suspension is soft and sags as soon as you weigh it. So don't let this intimidate you - I too am 5.8 and 32 inseam.I made a tutorial of how to clean the carb and also instal an aftermarket desert tank for the DRZ. I have reviewed most of the 650 ADV thumpers on this channel, so please take a look through my videos - I find the BMW XChallenge to be a very worth competitor to the DRZ. I also still have in my garage waiting to get reviewed the Honda XR650L and KTM SXC 625. Also, some great news, Kawasaki invited me to their press release and extended review of the new KLR being release later this year so stick around for that and please consider subscribing to be informed when these come out. I agree with you, I have owned one for the last five years. I like it as a duel sport but I would have to find a better seat before I would want to use it as an adventure bike. The blanket idea you use may be a good option.

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. It's actually not a blanket but a seat cushion made out of wool which the Aussies are famous for. It's not motorcycle specific but they make plenty that are. Other option is the airhawk style but all these raise you higher.

      For me this has been the lightest motorcycle I've owned, and until my recent purchase of the Honda CRF 250 Rally, also the one with the smallest displacement. So it's all about perspective. Of you watch my review of the Yamaha super Tenere, it helps to tour on a big heavy bike because you'll see that 600 pound plis machine get thrown around by the wind in Eastern Sierras. Thanks for watching and please tune on this Friday as I announce a private tour of that amazing area. Cheers

    I like how you make your videos in a no-nonsense no-bs way. They are informative and feel sincere. I also like that you have the common sense to use a tripod and a proper microphone :) That being said, I wish Suzuki made a more touring and less dirt orientated version of DRZ400. Like put on a comfortable seat, a larger tank with some wind protection for the legs, maybe shorter suspension travel (lower seat), and some luggage hauling ability. Essentially more like the 650 but in 400. All the 650 thumpers become way too heavy if you drop them or if you come across a bit of the road that's technically challenging. I have travelled to the Sahara on a Yam XT600E and while it was perfect on the dirt roads, sometimes I would come across a really difficult spot and then it was an anvil. OK I admit I'm not a greatly skilled rider either, that's why I stick to the roads lol, but dirt roads in Africa can and do have difficult spots. Cheers!

    I agree that the DRZ makes a great adventure bike. I have a DRZ and a GS 650. While the latter is a great road bike, it's just way too heavy for dirt riding for me. the e model is road legal in australia and new zealand it comes with blinkers,speedo full rear subframe it's lighter and significantly more powerful than the s model. e model was discontinued in usa in 07 but its never been out of production it's still currently sold in aus/nz and typically comes with an enduro kit, barkbusters,radiator guards, bashplate and exhaust tip. 20-21 e models came with a cape york edition which added pro taper bars, grips and pirelli scorpion knobbies.
    i've had two e models an 03 and a 20 cape york edition. i did a 7000km trip in outback australia through 4 states and crossed the simpson dessert solo unsupported.
    there isn't really anything like the drz400 in aus it's won desert races, national motocross and enduro titles, even supercross round wins. but the best thing about it is it fits ina broad category of usefulness from just short of pro level enduro to commuting to work or across continents.

    Great review....It is the middle ground between KLR heafy cockroach and CRF450 Death machine. I will probably buy one for my step son to learn to ride on....I'm a KLR hardcore. He wants the CRF450 but dumping a teenager loose on a 50 horsepower 275 lbs bike... seems a bit irresponsible. 40 hp, easier to maintain thumper seems more the way to go.

    Great vid. One note about those bike trays. Most small vehicles won’t have the vehicle tongue weight rating to sufficiently haul a Drz. That’s something you don’t wanna guess on. Overweighted trailer tongues can mess up a car frame :)

      @pegasusmotorcycletours  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great point - not all small vehicles can or should tow. But the great thing about these bikes is that so many bike racks have a weight limit of 400lb permitting the carrying of this bike. That was actually a big reason for me getting a lighter bike - I can carry it anywhere we go as a family. Thanks for this tip, and thanks for being here and for participating in the conversation. I released a video in the first week of January listing all of what is to come this year so please take a look, and in the meantime thank you for being here and I look forward to hearing from you in the future. @@pegasusmotorcycletours I actually got a tow hitch installed on my 2018 Subaru Outback with the intention of adding a motorcycle tray / attachment to it (cuz i REALLY didnt want to pull a trailer, and most importantly, STORE a trailer ) only to learn later that the 'toungue-weight 'rating for my vehicle, is maximum of 200 lbs.. (tongue weight being the MAXiMUM weight / downward force that my specific vehicle's back end is rated for, meaning, an attachment that does NOT have wheels (like a trailer) and ONLY relies on the car's hitch to 'hold up' a load (nothing touches the ground other than your standard 4 car tires) . Mind you, the actual capacity of both the installed hitch, and envisioned bike tray was WELL above that .. 500/700+ lbs if i remember.. so forgive me if this is old news to you, you do have to go by your vehicles 'toungue weight capacity' .. its the weakest link in the setup.. Its pointless to put a hitch / tray rated to 1000lbs, or whatever, if the tongue weight capacity for that vehicle is only 200 lbs. .ive heard bad stories about bent frames, and scrwed up body panels from folx trying to overload their car.. again, if this is already known, disregard ;)

The DRZ would strain for long periods above 60mph, with gear, etc. Thanks for your question - I am releasing three more 650 reviews (Honda XR650L, KTM625 SXC, and BMW XChallenge) So please consider subscribing to get notified when those go out, after which this channel will have reviewed every relevant 650 ADV bike on the market. The decision between a DR-Z and a DR has gotten more interesting over the years. Procycle has shaved a custom-suspended, big-bored/cammed DR down to 320lb curb, and also offers wider-ratio tranny gearsets for both big Suzuki dualsports. DR-Z500Ss can put out over 60WHP these days too.
      Do you want an aluminum or steel subframe? High or low seat? Fat or skinny dualsport? To carry a passenger?
      The DR-Z has better clearance. It can be shaved below 300lb curb. A kicker kit might still be available for it.
      A DR tends to feel more planted on windblown slab. It has a little more space for a passenger.
      Either moto can be customized quite a bit now.

    Good video pegasus!!. I actually got a drz400e with supermoto wheels a few weeks ago (still have my KLR). It is so much fun, poping wheelies everywhere haha, but honestly for trips or more than a few kilometers on highway I still prefer the KLR, I feel so unprotected on the DRZ, no fairing, windscreen etc. DRZ is fine for messing around or short trips but no way to do a trip two up for 15k kms like a did on the KLR

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks - the 400E is actually a dirt version, not street legal here, so definitely not meant for the highway. I had the S version which is the street version. Does you bike have blinkers? IF it's the dirt version of the 400, then the gearing is definitely prejudiced toward low speed torque - hence the wheelies.

    I had a drz400e for a moment last year and didn't keep it because of the cons when using on road and I felt that it was never pleasant on and off road. Off road it is too heavy, on road it was terrible(seat, behaviour, noise, high rpm,...). I believe the main reason people consider it is the price when buying one. I sold it and bought a xt660r which is much better on road, but worse off road and this fits for me because I need to ride for a long time on road to reach anything off road where I live.

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the highway capability is definitely lacking for the DRZ, but I never actually found it terrible, as I expected to. In it's stock form with stock tires it was quite alright - surprisingly so. I think tires have a lot to do with it, and the stock Bridgestones are very much street oriented. In the end there are comparable/better bikes to be had for the same price roughly, so I moved on from the DRZ, but I hope the review helps people inform their decision. Most of those bikes where I live are plated and with dirt bike tires and upgrades, people are using them to get to the trails without the annoying truck load offload part. I couldn’t decide between the DRZ-400S and the KLR-650, so I bought the DRZ first, rode it 8000 miles, then bought a KLR 650 because I went riding with a buddy that had a KLR 650 and couldn’t keep up with him on the freeway or off road?? I was shocked, so, this the conclusion I came to. I’m going to keep both (which was never the plan) I was going to sell one of them to replace the other bike. But they have their pros and cons and you kinda need both bikes depending on what kind of riding your going to do. If I had to choose one…it would be the KLR 650, only because the seat is so comfortable, it has a 6 gallon tank and can go 300 miles. But I love my DRZ, its so much lighter and so much fun to take off road. If you can, buy both. Your DR650 and the DRZ. If you had to choose which one first. Ask yourself what are you going to do more? If your on Dirt more, buy the DRZ, if your on the road more get the DR650. Both are awesome bikes…

    I just rode in the dirt for the first time the other day, but I fell on a turn and broke a rib! 😔 I figure my tires may not have been suited for the soft sand I hit, but I'm sure it's because I'm a newer rider too. Any advice?

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dang friend, sorry to hear that - I've been there - rib injuries take a long time to heal but you'll be back at it soon enough. Take the time to learn as much about dirt and ADV riding as you can (
      keeping in mind theory will only take one so far). Were you riding these OEM tires? In any case, always be sure to air down your tires when you hit dirt - 15/18 front and rear is a good heuristic but it all depends on how nasty the dirt is - if there are sharp rocks that can give you pinch flats or not - air down a little at a time and see where the bike feels the most positive. (for this reason you need to carry a pump of some sort - electric is fastest if your bike has an outlet). First step of course is to consider better tires - there are so Many out there to choose from but if you want a top of the line dirt capable tire that is long lasting and great ton pavement, The Heidenaus K60s are the gold standard. If money is a factor, Shinko makes the 704 or the more dirt oriented 804/805 option. Metzeler is another German product that is great, and the Continental TKC80 is the sexiest of the bunch. I touch on all these throughout all of my motorcycle reviews since this Chanel focuses on the ADV lifestyle. So perhaps take sometime while you are healing to go through some of these videos of mine - I think you will learn a lot in the process. How you load the bike, and even how you ditch a falling bike is all something that is learned over time, and so I hope you didn't loose fate in the ADV riding game because it's the most satisfying type of riding one can do on a bike. You'll heal and you'll become a better rider I due time, and the DRZ is a great bike to learn on. The next review is about the carb cleaning process of the DRZ (I hope you have seen the desert tank tutorial release last month) so get to know this bike in your time off the saddle so that you are more confident with it when you are alone in the dirt. The next videos planned for this year, aside from more ADV touring bike review deal with other maintenance that tis fairly basic but vital for any ADV rider, tire care/file repair, tire choices, geared packing advice, tents and sleeping options, etc etc etc. Please consider subscribing so that you can be informed when these come out - there Russo much advice ahead and I wish you a fast healing in the meantime. Glad to have you here. Cheers -Nik

    I'm still on the fence between the DRZ400 and DR650 for my daily commuter and first ever offroad-capable bike.
    I don't really do adventure touring, this would be my daily commuter bike doing up to 90km/h (55mph) every day, and weekend light dirt. The poblem is, I do highways, ideally 120-130km/h (75-80mph) for two or three hours every month or two. With the DRZ I'd have to hold it at an uncomfortable RPM, or just leave an hour early and go 90(55). I sometimes do group rides, so I'd either slow everyone down or just go alone earlier.
    I want a dual sport because I moved to a forest some time ago, and I have a shitton of dirt roads all around me. I've never done any off-road on a bike, apart from the time I dropped my 650lbs tourer on a patch of sand. Also the lightest bike I've ever owned in my life was 210kg, aka 460lbs, so either the DR or the DRZ will be feathers for me.
    I really want to want the DRZ, but I'm wondering if the highway riding / reasonable RPM speed limit is a dealbreaker or not. Also as I've never done offroad, I don't know if I'll like, not like, or love it. Hi there. If this is your very first off road bike, and most of your needs are for higher speed commuting, I would definitely recommend the 650. The DRZ is for more serious ADV touring enthusiasts who need a lighter bike for really difficult terrain. The highways speeds are also more taxing on the rider and bike on the DRZ. I hope this helps push you in the right direction. In any case, ride both before buying so you know what fits your needs. I am very glad you find the information valuable - thanks for being here and for participating in the conversation. I released a video in the first week of January listing all of what is to come this year so please take a look, and in the meantime thank you for being here and I look forward to hearing from you in the future. I have increased the range and cruising speed with a 39 rear sprocket ( (110 asphalt miles?tankful at around 70mph, at the expense of off road capability) but a bigger tank would make all the difference. This review was awesome man! Buying my DRZ is one of the best decisions I've ever made! I have an 02 and I ride it at least 400-500 miles every weekend around southern OR/NorCal, from the mountains to the coast! I think that alone attests to how reliable these bikes are. I rebuilt the top end last year, and from that experience I can say that finding parts for these bikes is a piece of cake! The customization options are also amazing, I actually installed a headlight for a Chevy Blazer in mine! Mosko Moto also makes a killer Rackless ADV Bag with waterproof inner bags that come in 40L and 80L sizes and include a heat guard for the muffler, definitely a worthy investment for $490.
    I hope you come to Oregon and ride some day! I work here as a videographer and think we could make some kickass content together dude, keep rippin'!

      Hi. I'm releasing a review for f my xr650l where I compare it to the drz as well, bit not so much the super moto. The SM retails for about 7800 msrp, plus dealership markup, plus freight and assembly or whatever they choose to call it. Plus tax and document fees. So for a "new" bike, you will be saving at least a $1000-1500. It likely still has the warranty. Just ask that it is transferable.

      I have both, problem is, they dont produce the XR400 Anymore due a higher emission standards. Parts are a nightmare to find.

      Thanks for watching. I've reviewed the Himalayan as well as nearly every 650 thumper adv bike on the market. Right now I'm riding the KTM 690enduro r which has similar weight and suspension travel but loads more power.
