    BumpsNotes on XERB1090
The death of Dale Earnhardt resulting from a crash on the final lap of the race deprived a family of its patriarch and the sport of the most eminent stock car luminary of his time (Earnhardt Series). Earnhardt’s legacy might reside in how his death reshaped the sport.
At the time of Dale’s death NASCAR was dealing with the aftermath of three driver fatalities in 2000-Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin Jr. and Tony Roper, ahead of the Daytona 500.
The 2001 Daytona 500 marked the inaugural year of NASCAR’s six-year, $2.8 billion television agreement with Fox and NBC. BumpsNotes attempts to present a respectful view of the event without having to lean on the wreck itself of which most of you have viewed many times.
The story is compiled in five reasonably short videos and we hope you enjoy the presentation and editing taken from the NASCAR televised video article “The Day”

I remember watching this with my father that day. I was 17 years old and as soon as he hit the wall my dad slumped his shoulders and said instantly, "he didn't make it, he's gone." He knew that he died as soon as he hit the wall because of how he hit it. I never saw my dad so sad because Dale Earnhardt was his favorite racer of all time. And the day he won the Daytona 500 for the first time my dad was as happy as could be. He was cheering and just elated that he finally won.

My dad and I were watching when it happened as well.
I remember I didn't quite understand what had really happened as I was only 10 years old at the time, I just remembered his car smashing the wall and my Dad jumped up out his chair and kneeled in front our TV. He looked at me and said we had just witnessed the saddest day in racing history, that something in his gut said he wasn't walking away from that wreck. I think my dad still feels the sorrow he felt on that day he loved Dale Sr.

Dale Sr, I miss you more than I can describe... as a Nascar fan my entire life, Nascar hasn’t been the same without you. Whether people were a fan of you or not, you were one of the best racers ever, and a legend to the sport. I’ll never forget the day you died. I was just shy of my 11th birthday, and my old man and I were watching the race at our favorite track- Daytona. I’m forever grateful for my Dad introducing me at a young age to the beautiful sport of Nascar. The 3 car instantly became one of my favorites. I remember it like yesterday. Michael Waltrip took the the black and white checkered flag, and the only focus on everyones mind was: “please tell me Dale is okay.” You weren’t. But no one knew it until later on. You changed the sport for the better and were the king of the super tracks. The 8 car took 2nd, which is an omen if I’ve ever seen one. Any true Nascar fan can agree with me, we miss you beyond words. I’ll never forget the horror in Darryl Waltrips voice when you wrecked, and he instantly knew, something was wrong... terribly wrong. You died doing what you loved and as a lifelong Nascar fan, I’ll remember the 2001 Daytona 500 til the day I die. I also feel so bad for the horrible wrecks that Ken Schrader was apart of. And poor Michael Waltrip won a 500 that he would take back in a heartbeat. RIP #3. Long love the Winston Cup days. The intimidator lives on.

I have been out of it since the day watching it as a kid, I used to watch it with my dad and when we saw that wreck, it cut to Theresa and we both knew, I was only 5 at the time. But in the last year, I've started slowly getting back into it to see what's going on, Dale Jr. is there doing the announcing, and I'm going to watch this year's 500, all I can hope is that soon we can get Hailie Deegan in the cup series because she's the closest thing to an Earnhardt I've seen since the day.

I personally find NASCAR as a TV watching sport very boring. BUT Dale Earnhardt is such an incredible figure. I find him so fascinating, maybe it's because he reminds me of my sad. My dad worked for a GM dealer when I was a child. He wore the Goodwrench colors every day when he came home from work. He wore a mustache exactly like Dale's. We are from NC, just like Dale. My dad is and will always be my hero, so just by extension, Dale is a hero of mine.
I remember the day/moment he died. My dad and uncle (who live next door) were doing some work outside of our house. They were listening to the Daytona 500 on my dad's truck radio while outside. When they announced that Dale had been killed, my uncle broke down crying, something that I'd never seen before or since. It is such a strong memory to me. Dale is a hero.

He didn't sustain neck injuries in the fatal crash. A basal skull fracture killed him due to blunt trauma to the back of his head. He also sustained massive chest injuries that would've no doubt killed him had the skull fracture not. Either way, he died instantly doing what he loved.

As was mentioned he would have died no matter what. His entire chest hit the steering wheel at same speed essentially as the car hit the wall. Seatbelts breaking made the wreck essentially the same as driving a passenger car into a concrete wall at 120 130 mph. Insurviveable for your body to directly impact something that hard. He bent the steering wheel. Blood was all over the steering wheel and dash. Ken Schrader 10 years later finally said he knew as soon as he went to the car that Dale was dead.

And I know you can all go find articles which say it probably wouldn't have saved him because of the forces at play etc... but those are old articles (2001 statement from NASCAR say's this for instance) But his head snapped off at the neck... HANS prevents this from occurring... and let's not pretend that his was the worst wreck in NASCAR history in terms of speed and "violence" there were many before which were survivable and will be many more to come. I was NOT an Earnhardt fan, but I realize what a huge hole his absence left in NASCAR. Agreed that the #3 should be retired. I do remember this race, and being stoked for Waltrip (even though I was a Tony Stewart fan) and I was at Daytona in 2003 when Waltrip won again (albeit because of rain, and man, did it rain!). The first and only time that I went to Daytona, and for the first time in history, rain ends the race early. Ugh. But, at least Speedweeks was awesome!

I think some of Dale's greatest ever perfomrances came in those IROC races they held each year. Sure they had limited fields, but the racing was usually quite good amongst the top three and Dale frequently came out on top. I now hold the three races that Greg Moore did in 1999 as an extra special treasure, considering that we lost both relatively soon afterwards. Also, they proved Dale's credentials outside of winning in his "comfort zone", the trusty #3 Cup car. Truly World class for my money.

But on February 11, 1994, during the first practice session for the 1994 Daytona 500, a shock mount broke causing him to lose control of his Chevrolet on the track's high-banked fourth turn. The car swerved onto the track apron, and then up the steep bank before crashing into the wall nearly head on. Bonnett did not survive the accident; he was 47 years old. yes they were

So did they have head and neck restraints in nascar at the time? And was he wearing a open face helmet when he crashed? I'm still curious on what made him have a severe head injury that caused his death.

Ever the best of restraining systems in the most protective race car would not have saved him . 180+ mph to 0 in 4 ft. is fatal , period . I watched this live . His car hit the wall head on . Just the impact of organs hitting bones at that speed is fatal . The instant I saw the crash I knew he was gone . 😞

I wish that Sterling could have got on the outside line right before the wreck and I wish Dale Sr. would have stayed on Jr.'s bumper and took 3rd. But he lifted and they got all around him slowing the whole field down while he watched Michael and Jr. leave everyone behind. I always felt like after he blocked everyone for those last 12 laps there at the end he stopped and it was going to be a drag race for 3rd.

Dale was one of my heroes.id never really care about NASCAR after that day. At 13 yrs old. It was such a bad day.one I was sick for.i saw the end. Saw the crash.figured nothing was up which to this day that crash doesn't look that bad. But I took a fever nap and 3 hrs later I woke up n saw the news. "We lost dale Earnhardt" . I wish I still enjoyed NASCAR but I'll only have my matchbox style of cars from those days.

Irenee Shubert same, I remember I didn't quite understand what had really happened as I was only 10 years old at the time, I just remembered his car smashing the wall and my Dad jumped up out his chair and kneeled in front our TV. He looked at me and said we had just witnessed the saddest day in racing history, that something in his gut said he wasn't walking away from that wreck. I think my dad still feels the sorrow he felt on that day he loved Dale Sr.

@@deaf2819 in the live broadcast one of the announcers immediately began talking about how that type of crash, straight into the wall, is the most dangerous. I'm sure an experienced nascar fan could make the same insight.

Cørrado LeBlanc I doubt he got in front of the tv for for the wreak and said we lost the best driver. He did that probably during the announcement of his death. But yes I remember thinking it was just another crash till they kept showing it then I was like man this feels off doesn’t feel right. I didn’t think he was dead but I thought he was seriously hurt after they interviewed ken and you saw what he said and what Darrell said while watching the replays. I thought he was just seriously hurt. Not dead but just seriously hurt or just hurt. Then my world turned upside down when Mike Helton got up there and I found out.

If you listen to Darrell waltrip he definitely knew something was wrong that day. A crazy day for Darrell from his brother winning and im sure a great friemd dying all in 5 seconds. It tears me up whenever i watch the video of Darrell waltrip doing the commentating on the 2001 Daytona 500.
