I think for me in this experience it was surprising that 200+k ppl in a crowd could in unison show respect for one another and participate. It was very emotional during that taping and even YEARS later still watching this.

I still remember watching this race live on television back in 2011, and when they announced the three-fingered salute for lap 3, I got choked up. Me and my mother got out of our chairs, gathered round the dinner table, and held up three fingers for the entire lap. I'll never forget the chills that ran up and down my body for the duration of that lap...no talking from me, my mother, or anyone on the tv/in the stands...only a 43-piece orchestra of V8 engines crying to the heavens at about 8000 rpms...My family has always been big fans of The Intimidator, and to have a memorial like this on what was then ten years after that fateful race day was such an emotional experience. I still remember trying my darndest to hold back tears that entire third lap. To this day, 20 ten years after this particular running of the 500, and 20 years after the darkest day in NASCAR, I still get goosebumps and teary eyed whenever lap 3 comes along, and I see thousands of fans putting up those three fingers for The Man in Black.

Why not have a 28th lap for Davey Allison? How about run the 7th lap in reverse for Kulwicki?
If the guy is so revered, why is someone driving car #3 today?

Mark they don’t retire the numbers. This was the biggest death in NASCAR history.
