Paddy, you might need to raise your seat a bit, so your leg fully extends.
Indeed.
Agree
Couldn't agree more.
I was just going to say that. That's how you burn your quads up and get knee pain.
Agree
If your knees are still hurting try putting your seat up a bit.
Hey Paddy, avid biker here. First of all, congrats for your channel and all your videos, I watch you since you were all doing ''The budgeteers''.
Just a few points from me, might help you in your trip:
- I think it's safer (for next time) to start with a bit of preparation ahead of such trips. This would help you understand what are the struggles ahead, how to setup your bike in the smallest detail, and pace yourself properly. It's very easy (most of us did it) to get super excited for the idea of such a trip, and maybe keep the enthusiasm for the beginning. After this, it's a mental and physical struggle, and you get to a point where you just want to finish, no matter how. You're basically killing all your enjoyment.
- Might be the camera angles, or I'm not seeing right, but I am pretty sure your saddle is too low. You will be surprised to see how much of a difference this can make. Try to adjust it on the height, and also make sure to play a bit forward- backwards with it, and you'll be able to put much more power down, while avoiding serious injuries.
- I think you made a great decision to sleep in hotels instead of bikepacking. It is very important (especially if untrained) to get proper rest, proper sleep, proper food, and maybe most important: PROPER HYGIENE. This last one can be an absolute killer after a few days of biking, when you're constantly covered in sweat, dust and God knows what else. Yes, wet wipes and other quick means of cleaning might be nice, but nothing replaces a proper soap and water shower.
- Last but definitely not least (mistake which I also did in the past): if you can afford to extend the trip time, limit your daily km intake to maximum 50 -60km, with many breaks. Sounds like a cliché, but really focus on enjoying the trip, rather than counting as many km as you can with a heavy bike and a destroyed body. Otherwise, you risk ending your trip in a matter of days, with pains and tough memories which are going to last for long.
Wish you great successes moving forward, man!
During COVID you stayed at my wife's Homestay with Dreamy at Chiang Rai Bicycle Homestay! Sadly she had to sell it. Times were tough back then. But I'm now back in Thailand to support her, teaching and Youtubing! We both like to watch your videos. But please be careful. You are undertaking a very dangerous challenge. She says please fit some wing mirrors to your bike, so you can see cars approaching you from behind. All the best. Teacher T and Pat🙏
Raise your seat a bit Paddy. Free power, much easier riding too. With crank arm straight down at 6 o clock position, and with your shoe heel parallel to the ground (flat) on the pedal, your leg should be straight or a SLIGHT bend (5 degree). Changing heel width shoes to sandals will be micro differences but ok. It's not your standing position. It's your riding position. We don't ride standing on the ground... women and kids always think a good saddle height is too scary because they can't touch the ground while standing or sitting on teh seat. Lol
1917 borders 😂😂 so basically all of Israel and ALL of Jordan... You people are so out of touch.
1_state Palestine, That’s quite a sexist and unnecessary remark. Saying women and girls are scared of high seats. There are lots of serious women cyclists in Australia.
Bad day?
Paddy, as a cyclist I was surprised and concerned about your plan to ride across Thailand, without much, if any, pre-training. So I'm not surprised by your struggles so far, and you've actually gone better than I expected. You definately need to do shorter legs, start earlier (5am, or dawn) and do as much as you can when the roads are quiet and its cool. Like others, I'd say your bike isn't set up properly, and your seat is too low. Good luck for the rest of the trip.
I agree with @AJ1823PS3 . Starting at 5am crossed my mind while you were cycling through the heat of the day. That could be something to work in your favour. I love your ladies hat and neck scarf combo, it's very practical and will do a lot to keep you covered from the burning sun. I live in South Africa and thanks to my North of England Celtic Ancestors, I have to be very careful in the sun and last year had three skin cancer lesions cut out of my face.
I'm enjoying your new adventure and appreciate the slowness of your journey. Looking forward to the rest of it.
Paddy you are the best ambassador for Thailand. Great Videos and i just love to watch every minute
To adjust the saddle correctly, it must be so high, that when you sit on it, the pedal looks straight down and your heel is on your pedal then your leg should be fully extended and straight.
Fully extended legs get you nothing but saddles sores...but go ahead
I enjoy all of your videos, but your videos in Thailand are my favorite. There’s just something special about them. So happy you’re back and doing a series there again!
I’m enjoying your bike 🚴 tour Paddy. Like others have mentioned starting as early as possible would help make the heat more tolerable, a bright headlight is great for starting an hour or two before sunrise.
"my knees are killing me!" - proceeds to hop on a bike with the seat positioned for someone half his height
I did Thailand on the bicycle. 100km is my limit on a longer tour. I did around 75km a day and recovered well till the next day. Great documentary. 😉
I'm wincing in sympathy here. We just finished a three month ride in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand. It was so very very hot, dangerously hot, every single day, and this was winter! Okay, there were five days around Christmas that were nice and cool, but the rest of it, horrible, and ten degrees above normal (Fahrenheit). We're older than you, the heat is dangerous for me, we finished by noon every day. Shorter days, on smaller roads with at least a little shade, lots of ice, hydration, electrolytes, those little "resort" hotels you see everywhere, that's how we made it work, but it was hard. Thailand is an amazing place to cycle and I hope you don't give up on this (and I know you are probably done by now) and try just exploring different areas in more depth and more slowly but I hope this is not the new normal, this heat.
This series is gold, much respect Paddy!
❤❤LIGHTS.... BRIGHT COLORS... REFLECTORS ❤❤
So happy the Thailand 🇹🇭 series is back. I might be on my bike next time….
Wow, 100K!! You definitely pushed yourself too much on this one! Hats off to you, Paddy!
yeah way to far
Great vlog Paddy. Thank you and thanks for the honest appraisal at the end 👍
Wow, your storytelling is fantastic. As a bicycle tourist and a recent visitor of Thailand I am really enjoying your bicycle vids. Thanks from Seattle.
There’s a lot of great and kind advice in these comments. Timing, training, setup…and yeah you pushed really hard. You had sincere determination! Glad you’re okay so far, you are recognizing and identifying important and useful information as you go. It’s all learning and growing. I thought maybe you’d have a few places to stop and enjoy along the way. If you get back into this, that would break it up a bit and showcase the beauty of the country. Btw, I watched the sponsor ads, they were good!
Wow! this is very cool! Last year we cycled from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur, and this year we cycled north from Bangkok to Chiang Mai! we watched your videos with the provinces of Thailand and were in those places that you reviewed, and now you are moving on a bicycle. This is incredible! We hope you have a great time exploring Thailand by bike, it's very cool! P.s. It seems your bike seat is a little low for your height, it’s better to check it before you go on a long journey, you can easily adjust it using a video on TH-cam, and your knees will thank you! Have a great trip.
Am glad that most of the comments are already addressing issues like riding earlier to avoid the sun and the obvious seat post height issue. Another suggestion in the near future would be to consider investing in a clipless pedal and cleats that are relatively comfortable to walk on (compared to other cleat shoes) so you can cycle way easier and still explore around. There are many out there who would say clipless is meant more for road cycling but just my two cents on how you can potentially offset some of your lack of training and experience with cycling long distance. Can't wait to see more of your upcoming videos, cheers!
Paddy here is what you need to keep that sun off you.
Bassdash Men’s UPF 50 Performance Fishing Shirt Cooling Hoodie. It doesn't have to be that brand. Trust me it will work wonders for you. Good luck Paddy.
Well done Paddy! The struggle makes for awesome viewing, we were cracking up (sorry) lol
Keep going paddy you can do it.
God bless you.
The internal struggle is always the toughest struggle. You are amazing to get yourself through all of these hurtled and break the 100Km goal. ❤
Very true 😂
Safe journey Paddy❤❤
All respect to you, Sir.
Very tenacious.
This is great, a video EVERY day. Thanks! I'm lovin' it.
New to your channel, referred by Trudy and I’m really enjoying it !
Loving this Thai adventure already .. hope you’re not in too much pain .. take it easy and enjoy the journey 😊
Paddy I like your little red riding paddy hat!!😂
Awesome series so far
Do it Paddy,,,,,,,,love watching,,,peace and happiness on the road,,,,❤❤❤❤
Paddy, we have heard the north has the worst air quality due to forestry burn off! Yea it is hot as hell in Northern Australia with humidity so any physical exercise between 9-5 is bound to suck it outta ya ! Keep it up mate , you are inspiring this young64 yo to come and do the same !! Thanks mate!
Welcome back to Thailand Paddy😊
Hi Mate, well done . You keep chuggin, I'll keep watching. Great content, please don't die......
Brilliant video. I need to go back and watch part 1. Marvellous entertainment 🎉+1.
Loving the series, it really makes me miss my time in Thailand. I can’t wait to go back!
Yes mate, you are sitting too low!! I like how you talk about yourself and your experiences. Best regards from Switzerland
Loving that you're back in Thailand (my favourite place). Really looking forward to this journey with you!
I love cycling, love to explore and love Thailand as well, I wish I will have the time and budget to pull of something like this in the future. Maybe one province as a start.
Enjoy and stay safe
Respect on taking on this challenge!! I'll be rooting for you to make it, but I'm sure you will. That horror park/temple reminds me of Haw Par Villa in Singapore :)
Paddy, What a Big Achievement you make. My Big Compliment and I Wish you Good Luck on your Journey! 🙏
This is gonna be a struggle. Love it.
Really enjoying this new series! Wife and I just got back from Laos and I can’t imagine the heat over there right now. 🥵
You’re doing great, Paddy! When I started bike touring from scratch, it took me a long time to make a hundred km in a day! So scaling back a bit makes perfect sense. Wishing you a protective bubble around you and your bike. Cars and trucks will always be a greater threat than heat and distance.
Surely I will follow you up to the end of the trip to southern Thai provinces
You’re crazy to do this without pedal clips saves you a lot of energy.
traffic death is quite high in Thailand, i'm glad to see your update video because it means you are ok.
Paddy, this adventure will maintain your body. Whatever you done before all trips and adventures are really amazing.
Love all your episodes.
Love your channel Paddy. Been to Thailand a number of times now and love the place. Recently there for a month going up the west gulf which shows another part of non-touristy thailand, via boat, minibus, coach and motorbike and the fun of the place is always brilliant, eye oepening and thrilling. So it's awesome to see you tackle a different route on a bike and am loving this new content. The River Kwai in the West is a great destination to go to, so would love to see some filming there too. Keep it up!
Good luck ✌️
It sounds great travelling around Thailand by cycling I've never seen any foreigner doing this and looking forward to how exciting is coming from Paddy but I have a little worry about safty.Hopfully everything is going well and waiting till the last video in this episode .Good Luck Paddy
Love that random temple :)
And another thing 😊 removable sleeves to protect from fierce sun. Did a guided cycle tour from bangkok to chiang mai with Spiceroads a year ago, loved it ! Sorry just seen the sleeves now !
I went to that exact Cafe Amazon and bathroom when I rode the Mae Hong Son loop! 😂
I love Thailand ❤🇹🇭
I've always wanted to do a long solo journey but I don't have the balls to do it. It's great just watching you do this!
here whe go nr 2 love it Paddy
👌
haha thanks!
in september i wil do the loop from chang mai haha on the scooter lol@@PaddyDoyle.
Well done Paddy. You are doing great, inspiring to many. Seat height as othera have said.
Very nice. I like your video❤❤❤
Well done Paddy. Big effort. Love the red hat.
Start your biking at 6 am to avoid most of the heat.
Bro you are Hardcore!!! The determination is amazing!!!! Try ice bath if find them 3 min and might help the joints inflamation
Hi paddy...early starts are the best for cycling in Thailand..and keeping a steady early pace...lower getting when it gets tough..
I did the chiang rai to phayao bike ride this week ,to visit friends returning the next morning ,using a heavy hired mountain bike ,and using a backpack, I'm an experienced cyclist but I found it tough going with the humidity...it seemed a bit easier on the return leg..
Enjoy..and best of luck on your journey south..
Great journey! I've done a few bike tours in and through Thailand with spiceroads - it is a great (but hot) place to cycle. Like others are saying, adjust your seat to get comfortable and limit the knee problems. If you can, you might also want to adjust where your shoes sit on the pedals. That hat looks great, but it is slowing you down a bit. A tip for when you are really feeling overheated, put some water on your wrists. That will cool you down fast.
😂 Love it!
I've cycled all the way to the most northedly point in UK and I'm a fatty myself.. You start slow at 50-60km first days/week or whatever your fitness allows you and eventually your fitness gets better on its own as you go and you will be able to do 100km easily in the second week onwards.
Really enjoying this Paddy! I cycled S.E Asia in 2003 - such amazing times! Btw if your knees start to hurt I'd say your seat height might not be right. Looks a bit low to me. Worth getting a bike fit if it continues. Good luck!
Yes definitely need to higher seat
So happy to c u in thailand again riding a bike not motor bike. Should be fun!!!
A great adventure. Try and avoid the hottest time of the day and drink plenty of water .the tarmac reflects heat back at you at 33 plus which is difficult. A wet shirt may also help to reduce temperatures.
Sunhat is very practical Paddy! Don’t forget to cover up your legs too!! Well done you and good luck…
Bravo Paddy! All of those feelings are right. As a cyclist, it is a mental game. Whenever that I do a long distance ride, the counting down of the kilometers will be my game to keep me peddling. I hope this helps as you journey to Betong.
We would not have thought less if you had an E Bike for some of this journey!
You need an E-bike, the batteries can be plugged in over night, you still have to pedal, but you'll go a lot further a lot quicker, and a lot easier😢on your body. But as I said you still have to pedal
Looks like you massively underestimated the task at hand😅 I wish you all the best but it will not be easy with the heat and lack of preparation physically for the challenge lol
Keep pushing, would be some achievement 💪
HELL YEAH!!!!!!
I have to agree with the comments re cycle position @paddy.
You need to extend your legs further, for 2 reasons......its more efficient, and it will provide less potential injuries.....especially to your knees and back.
Hi paddy i liked the idea of urs to cycling around,so that camera allows us see behind u in a much more slower way than if u ride on a bike or so,every 15km i think u should've rested, about 5 rest time in 75km,and man i didn't think u wearing that red hat and acted so humorously, u in that red hat remembered me the queen on the move😂😅😉😆😀🙏🇮🇳👌👍
Paddy, you need to do like farmers. They get up around 4:00 am and quit at around noon time.
The sun [UV] in Thailand is brutal! Ditch those short-sleeved football shirts and buy some long-sleeved cycling shirts. They usually have a large pocket sown in the back for small conveniences.
Fair play to you Paddy you have got into this with literally no training what so ever which is difficult to do when the legs and body aren't used to that sort of effort
Wondering if a rechargeable fan would help you out as I can recommend the ones you put round your neck and adjust the two fans to aim them at your face for a nice cooling breeze. Also knee support and tiger balm to rub in for pain relief at the end of the day. Good luck!!!
Nice vid Paddy! Respect for the physical challenge you're doing!! But tbh, not to convinced yet about your route choice? Choosing the direct way seem to mean following long busy roads/highways... Not sure about the content of just following you next to cars running by? Is it still enjoyable on your end? I understand you have a time commitment to see Taylor but still ahha, it'd be nice to see you on some nice quite roads in the Thailand countryside.
For me, getting my bandana wet really helps in the heat. Also if it's really hot, I make all my clothes wet, particularly shirt. It's like a personal air-conditioned aircon. Little breeze, nice and cool.
Good on you paddy , you can do it mate . Suggest you build up kms slowly. To build up muscle strength and to allow your body to adjust to being on the bike 100km is a bloody long way with panniers, . Very early start might help too . Definitely need rest days .. Its ment to be fun .
I rode a 6k Dechatlon bicycle from Phuket to Hua Hin and I emjoyed every minute...except when dogs were running after me
สุดยอด
I’m here for the British complaining about the heat 😂 just kidding, I’m sure it’s really hard. New subscriber. Cheers!
If it was me, I would get a rear view mirror. Keep it up 👍
Stretches before your ride is very important... will also help reduce cramping as you continue your journey
Paddy the paddler!
3:28 Yoo I stopped at that exact Cafe Amazon!! There’s a little tower in the back outside
Paddy didn’t know you where a toon fan up the mags
As a runner and cyclist, I would recommend that you take regular BCAAs and Glutamine while you're doing this tough project, Paddy.🚴
Good luck and safe riding.🚲🙏
Boy Paddy two thumbs up for the effort on this leg of the trip. Not so sure about your fashion sense, but the bonnet did look cute on you.
😅😅😅😅
One other thing, can't tell exactly from the videos but best placing the ball of the foot on the pedals, not the arch of the foot. Loving your videos and approach
Loving the Little Red Riding Hood vibes 😅👌
Absolutely love your videos and the fun way you look at life, I've been bing watching them over the last week. Now follows a motherly nag 😂... when it hurts and you're not enjoying it don't push through it...stop! Don't bugger your knees at your young age. If you can afford to take it slower then please do... Motherly nag over. 😊
