Blade: Trinity - Is It Really As Bad As Everyone Says?

  • 1998’s Blade was the first superhero movie that gave audiences a peek at the potential of bringing Marvel characters to the big screen. Wesley Snipes became iconic as the half-human, half-vampire Blade, with the film earning a sequel that was an even bigger hit and directed by a young Guillermo del Toro. For the third movie, franchise writer David S. Goyer was given the opportunity to direct, and New Line Cinema opted to spin the series off, using the film to introduce two new characters, Jessica Biel’s Abigail Whistler and Ryan Reynolds’ Hannibal King, part of a vampire hunting team called The Nightstalkers.
According to various reports, including co-star/standup icon Patton Oswalt, the shoot was a disaster. Wesley Snipes, perhaps rightly, assumed the franchise was being taken away from him, with him resenting Blade’s reduced screen time and being uncooperative on set. He apparently did not like Ryan Reynolds, even referring to him a “cracker,” and Snipes eventually sued New Line for allegedly violating his rights as a producer and reducing the character’s screen time without his approval. Director Goyer later called it one of the most professionally and personally difficult times in his life.
In the end, the film underperformed at the box office, only grossing $52 million domestically. The Nightstalkers never got their spin-off movie, with Snipes, sadly, ending up in jail for many years due to a controversial tax evasion case. With Blade getting a reboot, now is an excellent time to look back at the original trilogy's controversial and much-loathed final instalment, so we can determine whether it’s as bad as everyone says. This episode of Marvel Revisited is written, narrated and edited by Kier Gomes.

It still makes no sense for Blade to mistakenly kill a human. In the first movie he describes how to tell the difference in human and vampires.. So for him to mistake a human makes no sense.

i kind of agree and disagree. for obvious reasons it makes no sense but if the script was better or by assumption one can assume that over all that killing and dealing with all that trauma of being one of one with a dead mom who also tried to fuck you in part one.......its not far fetched to imagine him slipping and making mistakes.

As much of a disrespectful pain Snipes was, he ultimately was right about the script. Blade went from spotting the single human in a club full of vampires drenched in blood to getting fooled by Halloween plastic fangs. They obviously were more interested in continuing the franchise with Ryan Reynold’s character and friends. All while Blade got the scraps of the idea pool.

Blade trinity will always be one of my favorite movies. Not for the movie per se, but for that moment in my life. I was an akward teen, little to no friends and a little bit depressed. And my dad took me to watch that movie just to cheer me up, he payed for everything in the theatre and even faked he like it (he hated it), just to be with me and let me clear my mind for a time. So I love that movie with all my heart.

In the 80's it was barbarian movies (Conan, Beastmaster, Yor etc.). In the 90's it was Indie/Art films. Now it's Comic/SciFi/Fantasy. I have the extended cut dvd set and you nailed it. Dracula didn't need to survive to make more vampires, his legacy continues in Blade was a literal statement by Dracula that wound up cut from the release.
The alternate ending would have been the better end for the theatrical release though. It is Blade on the table, but he wakes up before they cut him. his human side kept him alive through the end of the vampires but died afterwards, leaving Blade as a full vampire yet still without the weaknesses to silver and sunlight.

I actually enjoyed Blade: Trinity. I felt it still had it’s dark tone drama like the first movie, and it’s action pack moments like the second. I feel that Ryan Reynolds completely stole the movie with him playing Hannibal King. His role in that movie is the reason he’s playing as Deadpool today.
Sure, the movie it’s perfect and has some flaws, but all in all Blade: Trinity is still a kickass “Marvel-ous” action/horror popcorn flick! 👍

I guess I'm in the minority of people who enjoyed the entire trilogy? Valid points on the elements that made the 3rd movie not as strong as the first 2, but I still enjoyed the finale much more than most of what passes for entertainment these days. And the IRS totally made an example out of Wesley Snipes. They did that man so wrong it still makes my head spin.
Please do a "WTF Happened to Fastlane", if you would. It only got one season from 2002-03, but damn what a fun show it was! It was cancelled only because it was too expensive to shoot another season between all the flashy/vintage cars, FX, guest stars, and licenses for all the music they used. They even had to replace most of the music for the DVD set, but I still have all the episodes recorded from TV with the original soundtrack, and it still slaps in 2023! Great channel brother, glad I found it!

2009 this movie saved my life. As weird as it is to say I was on the verge of suicide ( Not from watching the movie lol) So I was going through a divorce the ex took everything I had from me. I got extremely drunk one night started watching this and got done reading a Deadpool comic. I was debating on how to end my life when Ryan was on screen making jokes about the vampires. I was laughing so hard and all of the sudden had a wake up call. Like everything made sense to not go through with it. I realized I should look at life differently and just use sarcasm and jokes to deal with my insecurities and depression. In a way not only did the movie save me, but Ryan Reynolds did too which is why he is my favorite actor and my hero. Thank you Ryan and Blade Trinity. I love this movie as bad as it is! ❤

I enjoyed it. The rescue sequence was a visual feast for the eyes with a score to match. It had its strengths and weaknesses but an enjoyable watch nonetheless.
I thought Abigail and Hannibal were a great addition as the Nightstalkers, and great counterpoint to Blades deadpan deadly serious tone.
It was definitely a risky move but precisely WHY i enjoy this movie so much. It dared to be different and it was.

I feel like the first Blade set such a large precedent for the franchise to live up to. It'd be like if Terminator 2 was released, then The Terminator, then Terminator 3. Deacon Frost was an amazing antagonist to Blade, and everything about that movie lives up to the hype. Then they tried to keep recreating the formula from Blade 2, to mixed results.

Compared to the first 2 it seemed all over the place with Ryan Reynolds terrible constant jokes becoming irritating. They could have brought Karen back as one of the team as she quickly became a useful asset in the 1st. That would have helped as it would have provided some link/reference to the first (Trinity didn't feel like a sequel in a series more like a standalone film). The only continuity was Whistler's mention of his daughter in the 1st and her turning up in Trinity. It's watchable but not as good as the first two in my opinion

Snipes may have snapped and contributed to a difficult production, but Goyer's screenplay is the real hurdle keeping Trinity from being an altogether enjoyable third entry. Even Del Toro had issues with Goyer's writing on the second film (seriously, listen to the director/producer commentary on Blade II for some well deserved barbs). Goyer has had good luck in Hollywood in that he was an actual fanboy turned screenwriter, and his enthusiasm attracted filmmakers wanting to adapt comic book properties. Not to sound too insulting or mean, but he's basically a hack 😅 The Nolans fell back on Goyer for the lore, but they contributed a lot to the narrative of those films and are largely responsible for their success whereas most of Goyer's scripts are pretty clunky if you skim through his filmography.

Blade 1 & 2 (like Alien & Aliens) were two of my favourite films. One week I'd prefer the original, then the sequel, depending on my mood. I didn't get to see Trinity at the cinema, and although friends expressed disappointment in the third instalment, I went out a brought a copy so that I would have the trilogy on DVD.
After I watched it I gave my copy of Blade: Trinity to a charity shop.
    Never again.

So yes, it is in fact that bad.
Easily one of Goyer's worst efforts.

I really like Blade Trinity. Sure, it's not as good as Blade II and a farcry from the original Blade, but it was a lot of fun. Parker Posey was awesome and I liked the addition of Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds. Reynold's deadpoolisms were hilarious. The only things that I didn't like that much was casting Dominic Purcell as Dracula and that there wasn't enough Blade in there.

    - Ryan Reynolds & Jessica Biel (they were amazing and in such great shape)
    - Parker Pose (The perfect Psycho bad guy / girl . I honestly would consider letting her bite me. Might be worth it)
    - Triple H (Did a great job with what he was given. Large, imposing and funny)

Jessica Biel, like Jennifer Garner, deserved a better film to show what she could do in the genre. There are good female action actors, no doubt, but sometimes they don't cast actors whi are convincingly athletic enough for the role (looking at you, Angelina Jolie). Biel and Garner both had some athleticism in they way they moved. Unfortunately, neither of their respective projects were that good, and they never really got the chance to do blockbuster action again.
