I still like the X-MEN movie. The concentration camp opening sequence, Wolverine and Sabretooth fight on the Statue of Liberty, and the train station scenes were great. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart for great as Wolverine and Professor Xavier.
Ive lost count over the years how many times I have watched it. Was great to see in the theatre when this and the original Spider-Man came out, which is over 20 years ago now. Plus, Famke Jansen is always a joy to look at
Yes and i still love it. I remember cheering in the crowd. But the truth is, i was so mad that they were scared to embrace the comic looks. I hated that, but back then in general the studios were too scared to be super nerdy.
X Men (2000) was the movie that made Hugh Jackman a household name after Dougray Scott overran reshoots on Mission Impossible 2. The first 2 X Men movies are still the gold standard for this series. The makers quickly realised that Wolverine was the most popular character to come out of the movie, that they made him the figurehead lead of all the movies. The moment those claws pop out of Logan/Wolverine’s knuckles is really awesome. The X Men basically set the template that Marvel would create with their B team The Avengers, when they branched out their own movie studios.
ALWAYS LOVED the first 2..... I like these flicks when the climax is more character based and not an overblown CGI Battle.... Days of Future was the perfect End Cap.....
This was one of the first movies I bought on DVD! God, I'm old🤣....seriously, this was one of the first legit super hero movies that felt 'new'. I grew up reading X-men and when I watched this movie, I felt like they were onto something great - it wasn't perfect, but it opened the door for pushing things further. Re-uniting most of the core cast for the end of Days of Future Past was classic!
What I really like about the 2000 X-Men movie in retrospect is that since it was the very first movie of the franchise they wanted to make sure it would be highly entertaining on its own, and it still is I would say. The first movie alone does a good job of introducing its characters and establishing the basic lore about mutants, Xavier's school and the Brotherhood, featuring a balanced cast of enough iconic favorites from the comics and a standalone plot for them to work together to rescue Rogue and stop Magneto's plan. I look at it in a similar way as how I think the first Avengers movie of the MCU can also be watched as just an entertaining superhero flick even without having to see anything else that comes after it. And it's a good thing to know that this movie can be enjoyed so easily on its own since Fox's X-Men film series got to be kind of a convoluted, inconsistent mess as it went on. X2 was a very strong follow-up to this movie with Bryan Singer still directing, but then it also had teases of Jean becoming Phoenix to setup the third movie, with The Last Stand ultimately turning out to be the most polarizing entry in the original trilogy followed by Wolverine's prequel movie being received even worse. First Class wanted to be a reboot while also staying in continuity, and I think just created a lot more inconsistencies with the original movies from then on, and the fact of all the movies now being branched off into different timelines only adds an extra layer of confusion for some people. Not that any of the later movies haven't had moments of their own, but I do think the series as a whole just ended up being a real mixed bag that clearly wasn't thought out well in terms of the overall continuity. All that being said I think the initial 2000 movie still holds up very well, with or without any of the other movies to follow it.
Because of the strides that superhero/comic book movies have made in the years since, this film feels smaller & quaint. It's not a bad thing, though. Sure, more character stuff for Cyclops, Storm & Sabretooth would have helped, but it's a fun adventure that would give birth to X2, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past & Logan. Regarding Marvel, this movie walked so that the MCU could fly. I also gotta love this movie because it got me into comic books & specifically X-Men comics, then the 90s cartoon, X-Men: Evolution, Wolverine and the X-Men & the various video games that came with it.
I actually read an earlier draft, which I found better, and I like the movie. It gave more scenes and characterization to Storm and Cyclops, Beast was in it, Rogue doesn’t get kidnapped by Magneto but actually joins the team to stop him at Liberty Island, there was no toad struck by lightning line, and other things I’m forgetting, but it was a very good read
I remember seeing this in theaters on day 1. People in my auditorium were cheering soon when the movie started. I remember I bought all the action figures except for professor x.
I always liked the first film but still think it's a bit cheesy. The second X-man film was pretty damn near perfect though and is still one of my favorites of all time of any genre.
Erik: Sneaking around in here, Charles. Whatever are you looking for” Charles: “I’m looking for hope” Magneto: “I will bring you hope, old friend. The dialogue in this movie is 🔥 There’s also this line from Magneto: “I always thought of God as teacher. A bringer of light , wisdom and understanding.”
At Timestamp 10:14 I find it amazing that throughout this review that you did not mention The ambitions, goals and conflict of Xavier & Magneto being parallel to Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, respectively. Especially since at the end, Magneto says "..by any means necessary". That's what was the takeaway for myself and almost everyone in my social circles, online and offline.
Jean Claude van Damme, Aaron Eckhart, Mel Gibson, Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Keanu Reeves, Russell Crowe, Keifer Sutherland, Jackie Earle Haley, and Viggo Mortenson were also considered for Wolverine. Katherine Isabelle, Christina Ricci, Natalie Portman, Evan Rachel Wood, Drew Barrymore, Katie Holmes, Alicia Silverstone, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Geller were considered for Rogue as well. Jim Caviezel, DB Sweeney, Edward Burns, Jonny Lee Miller, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Tom Cruise, and Owen Wilson were considered for Cyclops we well. Halle Berry, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Angela Bassett, and Rachel Luttrell were considered for Storm. Lucy Lawless, Maria Bello, Julianne Moore, and Selma Blair were considered for Jean Grey Christopher Lee, David Hemblin and Terence Stamp were considered for Magneto. Joel Schumacher, Tim Burton, Danny Boyle, John McTiernan, Robert Rodriguez, Paul Anderson, Brett Ratner, Stephen Hopkins, Irvin Kershner, and Paul Verhoeven were considered for directing.
When I first heard plans for the film I immediately thought Patrick Stewart would be perfect as Professor X, but he won't do it. He's still Picard, he won't want another fantasy/ sci-fi role. How glad am I that I was wrong
This was actually the film that began the superhero movie era, not Blade (1998) nor Spider-man (2002). I distinctly recall that everyone was worried about the chances of this film being successful, and once it became successful, it led to the green light of several other projects. Spider-man only fueled this notion, it didn’t start it. For some reason, Blade, which was just a minor success at the time, has been retconned in the past few years and the movie that started it all. It’s not how it was perceived back then. Everyone claimed it was the first X-Men film that did that. P.S.: The all new all different X-Men appeared in 1975, not 1973, and the comic was helmed by Len Wein and Cockrum.
Blade is a movie that was inspired by a comic, but barely anybody KNEW Blade was a comicbook character. With the X Men the origins were undeniable. THIS was an "All in" move by a big publisher, putting one of their biggest properties on the line (Fantastic Four was IIRC still more popular back then and Spider-Man as a non team up probably too... Avengers was afair despite having some of the best known names not the best property in the 90s and virtually nobody gave a shit about Guardians of the Galaxy ;)) and if it had failed/bombed, it might have been the end for all Marvel based aspirations of ten to twenty years.
I knew nothing about X-Men when I went to see it with friends on opening night, but I remember the hair going up on the back of my neck when the word "evolution" came from behind me. No one mentions the sound design, but it was brilliant.
The movie here is HEAVILY based on the cartoon series... The entire premise at play is something that the cartoon series had a whole miniseries event for. And this follows it beat for beat pretty well more or less. Even the intro to Rogue, that was pretty much verbatim from the cartoon. The brotherhood vs Xmen with the mutant stigma and prejudice, this was ALL the cartoon 100%. Even the character looks are majorly inspired from the cartoon, which itself was a mirror of the comics for the most part. This movie did a pretty good job, it really did. And Hugh Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine here vs in Logan was similarly verbatim from the source material. It's not a different "take" on the character, it's the evolution of the character. It's the end of the storyline, and it was very much in existence before that "take" on it. That's one of the best parts of these movies, is that they did try (for some of them) to have some legit continuity with the source material, unlike a lot of other franchises when they come to the big screen.
X-Men was brought back in 1975. Furthermore, a staffer on the 88 animated pilot, went on to Fox Kids and bet her job on the the Fox X-Men animated series. Dougray Scott was Wolverine until he broke his leg on MI-2. The plot of Magneto is to turn a gathering of world leaders into mutants.
apparently YT is beta testing new annotations for creators to leave notes on videos for mistakes/corrections .... maybe you can fix that Danzig mistake when they roll it out for this video.
20+ yrs later this movie still remains one of my all time favorite comic book movies and really movies period..i saw it 3 times in July 2000 though the latter 2 i snuck into but most movies I wouldn't even want to see in theatres again...it really amazes me how much they were able to cram into this movie that's not even 1h40(which I'm glad i didn't know the runtime before cuz I'm not a big fan of movies shorter than 2 hrs, especially if it needs to explore origins).. Patrick Stewart is great in everything... Hugh Jackman is perfect as Wolverine as is Ian McKellen's Magneto...Cyclops,Jean Grey,Storm,Mystique,Ray Park ..really everyone is either good or great in their roles and the politics and what happened to Kelly and also the X-Men as outcast a la any number of people outcasted in our world remains relevant..I'll borrow the Spill Crews rating system and give this a High Full Price..almost 22 years later it's still just as good if not better than it was in 2000...Thanx for the video bruh i appreciate it much
Majority of the clips you showed of Danzig was Michael Graves, the guy who replaced Glenn Danzig in the misfits in the mid 90’s. Glenn quit in mid 80’s.
Remember when before X-MEN was released in theaters, comic book fans HATED that someone like Hugh Jackman was cast to play Wolverine because he was too tall for the character? Yet another example of fans being wrong about movie casting.
Sabretooth and Magneto are sidelined on liberty Island. Wolverine goes after mystique one on one. Toad manages to beat Jean, Cyclops, and Storm. Storm gets him in round two, but my froggy Boi was hopping over three x-men like he was the boss. Toad is overpowered and awesome.
It's interesting to look back at this. One hand has me enjoying seeing this idea on the big screen, a few solid performances and makeup work and even a nicely level plot that feels big, yet not big. But then theres the black suits which I have been growing less and less accustomed to as the years have gone (and that's even from someone who didn't care for them as a kid too.) since it sees they are trying too hard to sell the "seriousness" of things and then it's just little elements like Sabertooth being a dumb brute, the dumb love triangle between Wolvie, Jean and Scott, Rogue being entirely the wrong choice to make a character surrogate, no Gambit and of course, Halle's terrible accent. Over-all, still a nice film, but only as a start rather than on it's own terms as a movie.
I was such a big XMen comic book fan so found myself very disappointed with this movie. The casting was mostly off, especially Hugh Jackman as Wolverine (who is supposed to be short and stocky) and Helle Berry as Storm (who is supposed to be African and interesting.) They massively watered down the diversity of the team, making them all speak like they're from somewhere, USA, rather than allowing them to have distinctive accents. We at-least get a touch of that with Nightcrawler in the second film. How are so many people so in-love with this? That said, some changes are great, such as Magneto renamed Eric and given that Holocaust origin -- what a spectacular scene! It's not all bad but so many of the changes made mess with character development and team dynamics so much that they make many iconic and pivotal story arcs impossible or at-least very messy.
Totally agree, my biggest issue was with Jackman as wolverine who never really did the rage of Logan justice. I really want to see claremonts xmen in a movie but so far the fox movies have totally missed the point of the comics. Except deadpool that was good they nailed colossus in that
I agree, the characters definitely aren't comic or cartoon accurate but they were still a memorable cast. What I don't like is the bad pacing of the third act and that the movie focuses way too much on Wolverine same goes for the rest of the films except X2 which i feel did the best job of giving us an early Avengers style movie.
Not even close. It's 4th, at best. Don't forget "First Class" which was quite frankly, a better X-Men starter to the universe. That has to be in the top 3 somewhere.
X-Men was a super film. Sadly, we did not get nearly enough of the Rogue storyline--Anna nailed the role, and the Rogue Cut elevates Days of Future Past and should NEVER have been cut. Instead of focusing on Wolverine after the 2nd solo film failed they should have shifted to the Rogue/Gambit storylines from the comics. By making Rogue-centric films Fox would have been way out in front of the MCU (which is now making only Female-centric films for this version of the M-SHE-EWW).
oh please no... as horrible as most Marvel "characters" are (Seriously, how can creative minds suck so badly at giving any of their heroes a "not broken" background? All these folks are sociopaths, societal rejects or worse. DC's parenting complexes in comparison are child's play. Every Marvel big name is a junky, alcoholic or in need of fifty years of psychotherapy. That as a whole group is the writing equivalent of how effing Rob Liefeld "draws" characters. Not just mercilessly over the top, but also ALWAYS THE SAME) by far the most annoying, useless and depressing ones are Gambit and Jubilee... eff them, killk them off, send them to Pluto in exile, whatever it takes, no Gambit, no Jubilee... have mercy with the Audiences!
So that wasn't Glenn Danzig I'm sure your comment section is already aflame with this that was Michael Graves he doesn't look anything like Wolverine he was the other singer for The Misfits
I had that copy of X-Men number 1. For 9 year old me, it was sensational (anything by Stan and Jack or Steve Ditko was sensational). It didn't feature Wolverine or Nightcrawler, though, those were Claremont creations. I watched the movie thinking who the f... is this Logan character? Iceman was my favourite, followed by the Angel, neither of whom were there. Hank McCoy was relegated to a cameo.
The only thing that bothered me is how Wolverine and Sabertooth don't know each other and how Sabertooth is treated like a lackey to Magneto. Origins rectifies this but got his look completely wrong.
I forgot that Ian McKellen seems to be doing a semi American accent. Nice touch considering he’s been in the US for decades when we meet him. Can’t say he kept it for future films but still NOOICE TUSH.
I am usually all about these videos as they are accurate look-backs at some of my favorite movies. However, Dougray Scott could not play Wolverine as he was stuck finishing MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 after weather delays. This is why Jackman was cast at the last minute. Also, Magneto is only trying to alter the DNA of the world leaders gathering on Ellis Island; not the entire state of New York.
My memory is a bit hazy but didn't Dougray Scott was already cast as Wolverine? He had to back out of the role because of reshoots on Mission: impossible 2 and that's why Jackman got the role. In any case, I'm glad Jackman got the role instead of Scott.
That’s not what happened tho….Dougray Scott was set to play Wolverine but due to Mission Impossible obligations had to back out and that’s when Jackman subbed in as a last minute replacement.
uhh they didn't just seek Dougray Scott, they cast him and he was fully going to be in it until he had to do MI:II reshoots and then they had to scramble to cast Hugh as a replacement
The script and political themes of the first X-Men were really well done. The Rogue - Wolverine relationship was great and the most fleshed out it's a shame it didn't go anywhere after this one. While this movie is really nostalgic for me its not that good... The third act is very poorly paced and the X-Men aside from Wolverine really don't add much to the story they come off as a bunch of amateurs. X2 is a much better and more balanced movie.
See, I'm just wondering why in talking about Glenn Danzig, you mostly did not show Glenn Danzig. That was some young dude who LOOKED like him but was definitely not him. Dude, I'm a rock chick, so I know me some Glenn Danzig when I see Glenn Danzig. That, sir, was no Glenn Danzig!
The thing that X-Men did better than The other superhero team movies IS that it's More drama than action and X2 was even better. Guardians of The Galaxy was The next one got the right balance.
RIP Michael Kamen
He made that moment between Logan and Rogue feel so special and timeless
I still like the X-MEN movie. The concentration camp opening sequence, Wolverine and Sabretooth fight on the Statue of Liberty, and the train station scenes were great. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart for great as Wolverine and Professor Xavier.

Also, X-Men was revamped in 1975, not 1973.
Yeah I noticed that too LOL well the first picture was Glen and Michael Graves and that era of the misfits sucks balls 😂💯

They massively watered down the diversity of the team, making them all speak like they're from somewhere, USA, rather than allowing them to have distinctive accents.
So glad we've really only had hugh as logan so far. But the multiverse is open
Sabertooth and Victor are two separate characters in this film series. No link is made between them on screen.
The X-Men movies proved that superhero movies could be sophisticated and atmospheric
All this will be lost in the MCU
One of the absolute best.
First mutant we saw in cinema was young Magneto, right?
No mention that the start of this comic book movie STARTS WITH A SCENE FROM A CONCENTRATION CAMP!?!?!?!
I love the Cyclops Storm rescue scene. It looked so real. ❤
Toad is the best most overpowered mutant.
One of the best Superhero films ever made
I would say it’s the 3rd best X-Men movie made. I rank Days Of Future Past the best, then X2, then this film
Don’t forget Logan. That film is a masterpiece
X-men 3 is also decent
Not even close. It's 4th, at best. Don't forget "First Class" which was quite frankly, a better X-Men starter to the universe. That has to be in the top 3 somewhere.
short answer - they do.
Looking forward to the new episodes tho!
I've seen it in the cinema when it came out😁😊😁😊🤗🤗, congratulations Joblo 🎖😊😁🥇🏅🎺👍👑👍😉🏆🏆🏆
X-Men is marvel’s secret weapon. When done well, the stories are fantastic.
Damn, Senator Kelly literally drowns inside himself.
Aside from Deadpool 3
We won't be seeing Wolverine smoking a cigar in the MCU
Yah because "SmOKiNg iS hArmFUl"
X-Men was the grandfather movie of Marvel. And such a successful franchise and X-Universe!
That was a great movie. X2 and Days of future past are amazing as well.
4:07 talk Glenn Danzig and show second Misfits's vocalist, Michael Graves((
So that wasn't Glenn Danzig I'm sure your comment section is already aflame with this that was Michael Graves he doesn't look anything like Wolverine he was the other singer for The Misfits
glenn danzig as wolverine woulda been dope
Yep, pity they didn't use ANY footage of Glenn Danzig in this video.
That's not Glen Danzig. The michale graves.
Magneto is the first mutant we see in the movie.
This was an amazing movie back then and even now.
I can not believe that X-MEN is 22 years old
Please tell me that someone in these comments has pointed out that, when talking about Danzing, they were showing clips of Michale Graves.
Many times.
@@indiansfaninpa Well, that's a tiny bit of faith in humanity restored, I guess.
5:11 5:57 Did you skip the Holocaust opening scene?
Pretty rad video, but most of those images of Glen Danzig are actualluy that of Michael Graves.
A good but flawed first installment.
Pretty much
A great and underrated movie IMO
Ah, Solid Snake!
Great as always
My memory is a bit hazy but didn't Dougray Scott was already cast as Wolverine? He had to back out of the role because of reshoots on Mission: impossible 2 and that's why Jackman got the role. In any case, I'm glad Jackman got the role instead of Scott.
Rogue + Logan = Joe Rogan
I love X-Men but how does Cyclops prevent his laser blast with his thin eyelids?
the truth is very stupid (his eyes are actually gateways to some kind of energy dimension)
That’s not what happened tho….Dougray Scott was set to play Wolverine but due to Mission Impossible obligations had to back out and that’s when Jackman subbed in as a last minute replacement.
David Hayter as in Solid Snake David Hayter???
Back when less was more
Now everything will be overblown with CGI and memes
This coming from the film that became infamous for that line about the Toad being struck by lightning?
Yes!!!! Thank you 🙏🏼 🦇
uhh they didn't just seek Dougray Scott, they cast him and he was fully going to be in it until he had to do MI:II reshoots and then they had to scramble to cast Hugh as a replacement
this is a pretty weird review, the CGI was not great, it was by far the worst part, as was the rushed, bad 3rd act showdown
I lost it around 8:30 through 8:45 into the video you compare the X-Men with the likes of the eternals are you flipping crazy? LOL
Danzig is only 5’3”, which is the same size Wolverine is supposed to be.
UM...you're talking about Danzig, but showing footage of Michael Graves... I assure you, they are VERY different people.
Wait, Solid Snake wrote X-Men?
Uh, everyday is a school day apparently
See, I'm just wondering why in talking about Glenn Danzig, you mostly did not show Glenn Danzig. That was some young dude who LOOKED like him but was definitely not him. Dude, I'm a rock chick, so I know me some Glenn Danzig when I see Glenn Danzig. That, sir, was no Glenn Danzig!
That was Michael Graves, a vocalist in The Misfits from after the Glenn Danzig-era.
thats not Glenn Danzig in those clips
It's the only X-Men movie worth rewatching.
Wasn't Magneto the first mutant ever shown on screen with the WW2 concentration camp sequence?
So, did anyone editing this video not realize they used footage of Graves-era misfits when talking about Glenn Danzig?
The thing that X-Men did better than The other superhero team movies IS that it's More drama than action and X2 was even better. Guardians of The Galaxy was The next one got the right balance.
That's Michael Graves dude, c'mon, I guess this ain't joblo horror though so I can let it slide lol
Personal opinion, but Haley Barry should never have Storm. She just didn't have the gravitas Storm always had in the comics.
That first still was Danzig but the video after that was definitely not Danzig.
I'm sure Michale Graves appreciates you mistaking him for Danzig.
