    Favorite episode of RWBY right here.
    Ironwood's song, his fight with Watts, and him sacrificing his arm was so hype. "I will sacrifice whatever it takes to stop her."
    His scene with Team RWBY and Salem was also so well done, and had an amazing score. Perfect episode.

    A problem I always had with Ironwood as a character ever since V2 is that, and yes I am aware that not everyone is familiar with it, he is an excellent politician but a terrible soldier. I got some friend from the navy, army, marines and air force from both the state and my country watching the show and his strategies, approaches and general attitude just STRAIGHT screams he got promoted by either coming from an elite family or boot licking.
    Now for obvious spoiler reasons I wont named them but later strategies suggests that he either NEVER considered a sizeable opposing force or he just read the equivelant of WW1 in RWBY during high school and said "Lets do that but with no bayonets!"
    Now I know lore wise that is not the case but I look at how he acts and we all agreed that this guy would've cried on day 2 of basic.
    Still though amazing acting on the VA part and great camera work during the fight. 👏👏👏
    PS: I stand by my Twitter statement. Hotness wise 1 through 10? HE IS A 5 AT BEST! 🤣

      @@keithharper32 alright. Still.
      SPOILERS!!!!
      James is, in my opinion of course, a really incompetent leader. First we have the Ace Ops who as we saw in this volume rely solely on one person, Clover. Notice how all of them are level headed are in synch when he is around but as soon as he leaves they are just tripping on top of each other. This is both a critique to both him and James. My friends as COs said that you always, ALWAYS, made it clear that anything could happen and a line of succecion needed to be established but in Ace Ops? Their sole pillar was clover and afterwards they went into in fighting between themselves because there was no command structure.
      Second, during the Atlas Invasion, James had his army form a steady line and trenches. A classic ww1 strategy but innefective against an enemy that just charges in. Just like in ww1, useful against mobile infantry but means jack against tanks. And seeing how much punishment Grimm can take it was a waste of resources and good god. Lining all of his tanks right behind each other? Thats a parade formation, what you want is a spread line with gaps in between to mobilize infantry. Plus since he evacuated all civs down to the subway. All I can think of is how many choke points, sniper and intel gathering positions he could've had with empty streets and plenty of roofs.
      Then there is his navy. Which followed the same strategies for his ground infantry. PARADE FORMATIONS. I saw no V formations per 4 squadrons, the carriers were flying close to each other with no room to manuver or if they had, provided no bombardment support or acted as chokepoints.
      To conclude: I fully agree. James Ironwood was fast tracked. Putting loyalty TO HIM over loyalty to the mission. Had he focused solely on the military rather than his seats on the council and the politics on it, he could've seen his faulta but as it stands, he is a politician. Not a soldier. And if he is one we might as well call him Encino man. And to the people who dont get the joke:

    I've never understood why everyone that watches this show seems to think it's a positive when James says "I will sacrifice... Whatever it takes, to stop her!" Knowing his flaws and weaknesses that is an insanely dangerous statement for him to make and a harsh negative, followed aptly by what is said by Watts.
    The scene that comes after in his office makes perfect sense given how he was built up from the first episode he was ever in. It's like people refuse to remember the negatives in a character and only focus on the positives. Also as someone who agrees 100% with team rwby, him leaving tons of people to die isn't the move of someone trying to make the best move they can make, it's him letting his fears and paranoia get the better of him and making a very bad call to save himself and what HE thinks is valuable. Atlas, not the people of mantle.
    I've seen people get super upset over this character shift of Ironwood and stop watching the show, and now here with Stardust and the "simping" and I just don't understand how so many people can misunderstand what this character is and their intended part in the story. It's so strange to me.

    • @hdns4
      @hdns4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I mean, Stardust seems to be understanding just fine with what she said at the end. And that moment where Ironwood talks about sacrificing whatever it takes is meant to be something that seems heroic in the moment but quickly turns when you realize how literally he meant it, so reacting positively to it when you first see it is perfectly reasonable. That's the reaction the show wants you to have at first. It's only later in the episode that the real implications of that statement come to fruition.
      But yeah, I agree a lot of other people in the RWBY community seem to misunderstand his character. They can't seem to handle the idea that someone with good intentions can fall apart due to fear and paranoia. This is something that was a long time coming with Ironwood and there really was nothing sudden about this "shift." It's been building to this point for multiple Volumes now and that chess piece combined with Salem's threat were just the final two straws that broke the camel's back. The chess piece made him begin to frantically question everything about their plan and then Salem, in his mind, confirmed those doubts.

    • @ShankX10
      @ShankX10 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now I am going to get into Volume 8 spoilers in my reply so there is your warning
      Now the sacrifice statement can be seen as a negative and Watts even sees the flaw in that statement saying that he hopes he does but in the context of the seen it seems more Ironwood is talking about himself more then anything. I also dont see anything wrong with Ironwoods decisions up to when RWBY enter Atlas everything he has done has been very logical with how he plans to go froward (I can explain more if you want me to). Now with the argument between RWBY and Ironwood I am one his side in this because if we take a chance on evacuating everyone and in the middle of that Salem arrives (and she would have as we see at the end of the volume) Everyone would most likely die and she would have both relics and Cinder would have another maiden power. Now I am done I could go more into badly Ironwood was written in Volume 8 but unless you want to hear me rant about that I will stop it here.

    • @teambellavsteamalice
      @teambellavsteamalice 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Ironwood's arc is great. Team RWBY doesn't just fight evil, but also must try to unite people and "do the right thing".
      But the right thing depends on how optimistic you are! Of course, as this is a show you know Ruby is right and things will be fine trying everything to win and never give up anything. But objectively, Ironwood could be right. If the situation was unwinnable and you would lose the city anyway, saving part of it, the relics and the maidens power might mean you live to fight another day.
      It's kinda like superhero situations, Marvel's Civil War and DC's Batman Vs Superman, the writers create some issue good guys can be divided on. Whatever side you're on and whatever happens it's always more exciting and gives more character development than just fighting villains.
      Most of the time I love antiheroes more, and those that kill unredeemable enemies instead of constantly risking everything to capture them alive. That issue gives no friction between characters.
      Writers do make it so that choosing a lesser evil is the bad choice and not choosing, gambling everything works out for the hero is rewarded. But the option is still valid.

    • @ShankX10
      @ShankX10 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@teambellavsteamalice Oh ya I will still say team RWBY's and Ironwoods plans are valid its just depends on the viewer and what they would be willing to gamble in the situation (plus I think on a meta level the viewer has been accustomed that the hero's plan always works out in the end). I would honestly like to know how you feel they handled Ironwood in volume 8 out of curiosity.
      I also hate that most viewers dont even consider Ironwoods perspective or how important his plan really is, but that is just a an announce on my part.

      Team RWBY lying to him doesn't justify leaving millions to die to save a few thousands but sure. Also, they literally told him the truth hours before this encounter and he accepted it, even making a lighthearted joke with Oscar asking for "no surprises." And while he didn't outright state it before, he was definitely already aware that Blake and Yang told Robyn after she admitted she knew at the dinner party. Both of those things only became a problem for him when he changed his plan and knew that they would stand in the way of it. No, his actions here can't be blamed on anything except fear.

      Spoilers Below
      "Leaving millions to die so a few can survive." Oscar literally says this to Ironwood in a few chapters. By running away, Ironwood not only abandons Mantle but also abandons Remnant. And yeah, in Volume 8, both cities got destroyed because of Ironwood's refusal to do the right thing. If he had continued with his original plan (a plan that Salem had no idea about as we know from Watt's surprise) and gotten the tower up and running then he could have actually communicated with the rest of world and gotten reinforcements. The entire world could have united against Salem. That may have even been enough to have the gods judge in their favor if Salem eventually succeeded in bringing the relics together. THAT is the bigger picture that Ironwood refuses to see, despite claiming himself to be the only one capable of seeing the bigger picture.
      Instead, RWBY and co were forced to send out a two minute message from a 17 year old girl that no one who didn't know her would believe. No way of back and forth communication, no way of extra explanation, just the two minute message. So of course, no one came to their rescue and both cities were destroyed and for nothing. Also, the fact that RWBY and co were able to evacuate as many people as they did at the end of V8 shows just how unreasonable Ironwood is being. If they could do all that in a couple hours, imagine what they could do with all the resources of Atlas.
      Let's make one thing clear. I love Ironwood as a character. But it's not because he was right. He was completely wrong and that's what is so interesting about him, because he had all the good intentions in the world, but fear drove him towards the short-sighted, temporary fix rather than taking the risk on an actual solution.

    Ironwood IS right; keep the relic away for Salem no matter what. RWBY is wrong. Their lack of experience, their lack of wisdom, messes everything up as we now know. Ruby could of help Ironwood come up with new plan that would not leave Mantle stranded. But no, her "I'm right, your wrong" teenage attitude made her see Ironwood as an enemy. She may have saved Mantle, but she loses the relics. Stupid, brash girl.
    This episode is some of the better writing this show has. Too bad the writers don't make RWBY learn from their mistake, but keep making them stupid for plot convenience. This show had so much potential, now it's just disappointing. Of course I'm going to keep watching, I want to see were the train wreck ends. To see if I right about how Salem is defeated. Looking forward to your next episode's reaction.

    • @Blazingstoke
      @Blazingstoke 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Ironwood is correct in wanting to keep the Relic away from Salem, that's true, but his plan is terrible. Atlas as a city is dependent on Mantle for _everything._ If they abandon Mantle and move Atlas high enough that the Grimm can't follow, all Salem has to do is wait for them to run out of food, Dust, or breathable air (whichever comes first). As for Team RWBY, they're perfectly willing to help come up with an alternative; it's _Ironwood_ who's decided they must be enemies. Listen to his dialogue here - he has stuck himself into a false dichotomy of "everyone who is not 100% with me on everything is against me, and is therefore an enemy who must be subdued". If it were just Ruby's "teenage attitude" that "made her see Ironwood as an enemy", then why does Ironwood put out arrest warrants for Qrow, Oscar, and Team JNR, when they aren't even part of this conversation?
      Yeah, things go really badly when RWBY & Co. try to foil Salem themselves. But Ironwood's plan would still have ended with Atlas falling out of the sky and Salem getting the Relic. It just would have taken a bit longer and killed a lot more civilians.

    • @Mirality
      @Mirality 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They won't run out of food, they have enough farms etc within the city to be self-sufficient. They might run out of cheap labor for those farms, and they'll definitely run out of dust, though. But I guess that's another reason why he's been stockpiling it by banning exports for so long.
      But yeah, Ironwood is so focused on his immediate goals that he completely lost sight of the bigger picture, despite his claims to the contrary.
