These guys are members of the CRWBY sound design team. They worked on stuff that REALLY sold this episode for me. The sizzling of Ironwoods flesh, the soft leather creaking when he sets the bag in his desk, the distortion with the audio when Ruby has the Summer flashbacks. They worked on all these and it really added to the episode
They did some amazing work
That's what a sound design team is supposed to do though. It's not like they would let it be mute regardless
@@Wowluckylolz That doesn't mean we can't recognize when someone does a particularly good job at it. Also, yes actually, some shows wouldn't have had those effects at all. They might have had a sound for the bottom of the bag hitting the desk but forgotten the leather creaking. They might not have done anything audio wise for the flashbacks (or made different choices).

@heavyarms150 tbh I don't think it was that simple. Summer was special, there's no way she died "just like the others". My guess is Ozpin sent her personally to petrify Salem since she's basically a grimm too and Summer failed.
@heavyarms150 the evidence is WHO SHE IS. it's less a "in the story" kinda special but more a.. she's a special character because the creators made her one kinda thing.
She isn't just "a silver eyed" person.
Her name has been around since the very start of RWBY. She's the mother of the most main character of them all, constanlty mentioned, purposely never explored into detail.
THAT is what makes her an obviously special person in the show and why I think the creators wouldn't just let her die the same way a ton of nameless characters have. That would take away her value in a way.

@@khurrambrown851 Building up forces? With only a part of the kingdom with limited resources, dust, materials, water and food. Civil unrest between the refugees who made it and the snobby, elitist city of Atlas. A war between classes, races, and for shelter. Which forces would that be? He's already shot himself in both of his feet by reducing his number of allies even more.
Meanwhile, Salem will have Atlas surrounded so prevent airships from leaving or trying to get to the city, all while she can get the Sword of Destruction and tear down Atlas that way.
Not to mention that Ironwood is trying to raise Atlas to get away from the danger of losing the Relics, when Cinder and Neo are already there.

What I love about this Volume and about the story it’s telling is that Ironwood and Team RWBY are both opposite sides of the coins and share many parallels. Due to past experiences, they both keep secrets from certain people due to not being psychic and being unable to read minds and see if the people are telling the full truth or hiding something. They’ve both made misjudgments and have made mistakes. They also do things very differently. Ironwood wants to do things the legal and “logical,” way even if it isn’t morally sound. Taking the city to space and taking supplies from Mantle for Amity might be legal and logical, but it has caused much suffering or will cause more suffering. Team RWBY are willing to do things morally sound, even if they have to break some rules. Going against Ironwood’s orders might have been against the law and lost his trust, but it convinced Robin to lay off the attacks and help Ironwood in a time of need. Ironwood is affected by tunnel vision and PTSD. This means that when he is backed into a corner, he will do anything to avoid another Beacon scenario, even if his actions will lead to it happening again. Salem does still have spies and flying Grimm. Team RWBY are affected by the deaths of others and past trauma and are undoubtedly naive. This leads to them always wanting to save everyone, even if it doesn’t seem possible. What I love about this is that no one is fully in the right. Everyone is biased, everyone is flawed, everyone is affected by past experiences. There is no perfect solution. It’s only a matter of picking your own poison. And that’s why this volume is my favorite so far.
I think you explained everything perfectly. That's why this volume is so good and compelling. I have no idea how it's going to end and I'm not too sure I'm ready
I agree with all of that. One bit I'd add is that most (not all) of the threat of the relics is not their inherent power, but Salem using them to summon the gods while humanity is still divided.
That's why Ruby is (naively, small-soul-ly) doing the right thing by acting to unify people, and Ironwood's utilitarian decisions are ultimately doomed.
Time is on Salem's side, unless humanity unites.
And now we can fully understand all choices Ozpin made...
A lot of people are taking sides like Ironwood or team RWBY, but they both are in the right in a way. I am sure if the chess piece and Salem didn't show up, then maybe they could of talk something out or not lead to this and things to come. We knew that keeping secrets was going to end bad with Ironwood but he could have stop and think why they did it. Also Yang and Blake was the only ones to tell Robyn, not the whole RWBY team. This whole season builds up a huge grey area and it is great. Everyone is harping on team RWBY for being too native, but they are around the ages of 16 or 17 - 19. They are kids that got pulled into this mess trying to do what they think is best. Ironwood is doing what they was afraid of.
Kinda makes me wonder if Ruby or Weiss will confront Blake and Yang in the future. They did go behind their backs, too.

As for the flying Beringels you mentioned, nobody knows about them. We haven't encountered them, so I think it might be a thing later in the season.

And Ruby betrayed Ironwood by not telling him that the relic of knowledge still has one question.

He was also perfectly calm about the lamp when first told. He is not some overreacted, anxiety-ridden excuse of a man, and it's irking me. RWBY are hypocrites. They are liars. Ironwood was entirely honest with them UNTIL he found out they were lying to him.

Its the 2 horrible options. You stand your ground, you risk everyone dying and this all being for nothing. You raise atlas, you save who you can and live to fight another day. Agreed. I think Arnold is making the same mistake as Ironwood is - Ruby isn't Ironwood's enemy, she just isn't willing to blindly follow him. Her choices are on the side of good, even if she bucks the plan. Ironwood is too paranoid to assess her choices beyond that shallow obey/disobey view.
Ironwood isn't the enemy, he's trying to stop Salem the best way he can think of. His choices are on the side of good, even when he's sacrificing people.
They will only win if they can find a way to work together, despite their different philosophies. 'the enemy' is the wrong conclusion to draw here.

Both sides are somewhat in the wrong and right. I mean Ironwood is doing what Team RWBY and crew feared, him being too paranoid. But I get Ironwood too. He is scared and like Watts said he is using his heart but it costed him his brain (or something like that in the last episode)
Honestly, Salem is a genius. Her strategy has always been the same: divide and conquer. It's one of the simplest strategies out there and it works without flaw. She knew Ironwood was paranoid and scared, she exploited his weakness to divide the group. With him and the ACE ops against RWBY and everyone else, Salem and her forces have a better chance at winning. I haven't seen the next episode, but I bet Salem was just bluffing about her coming just to send Ironwood over the edge.

Raising atlas isnt the best but right now it seems better than standing your ground and risking everything when everyone is drained. @@patricktorres1292 its not the outcome that i didnt like, i thoroughly enjoyed the episode (kind of). It is how it happened. I don't want to spoil anything, but the outcome of one specific situation could have a completely different result if some people had better decision making. Humans make mistakes. Even the most beloved characters aren't perfect. But for God's sake, those were some bad calls that two people made. Like, giga bad. But more on that next week.
Ironwood didn’t loose it. He’s absolutely correct. His plan is the best. If Salem gets the relics she wins. Sacrifice a few to save the world.
Except his plan to retreat and keep away doesn't work when two enemy agents are already in your keep. One who's a maiden and the other who can disguise herself (and objects). The Relics and Winter Maiden are still accessible.

D Phalanx first of, the only reason we ended up with those trials is because the allies won. History is written by the victor. Secondly the nazis weren’t sacrificing the Jews/gays/blacks to win the war. They were slaughtering them because they wanted to, not because they had to. Thirdly if raising atlas high into the atmosphere keeps Salem out then it is the best plan. They say in the episode that protecting mantle left them wide open and it’s true. They can’t protect both mantle and atlas from Salem. But maybe they can, god knows how they love to nerf people in this show so team rwby can actually win.

He took it well in that he wasn't panicking. But with a large grim force and most likely salem on the way. Iron woods plan is definitely the smartest one.
If you don't know that the "heroes" of a show will win then you wouldn't be so sure that team RWBY was in the right.

@@mizel.i There is nothing wrong with that, in fact that is the point of the writers. They want us to be divided, just like the characters. Playing right into Salem's hands. I am more so on Ironwood's side then RWBY, but not fully. Since the show isn't called Ironwood though we are probably going to see RWBY "being in the right" which isn't a bad thing, it's just whatever.

That's only if you're operating on the knowledge that we as the viewers have. Also, as was pointed out by someone else somewhere in this vid's comments, they're on a pretty tight timeline right now. Even IF they could magically find a way to communicate with Vacuo and ask for aid, there's absolutely no way assistance would be able to reach them on time. They're in do-or-die mode right now. Ironwood's got the 'right' idea (so far as any of them are aware... again, don't let 4th wall knowledge impair your opinions). It's just going to fail because... well... he's not the protagonist of the story. Naive as they are, team RWBY's got the plot on their side.
Can we take a moment to appreciate how well written ironwood is, he's not the bad guy and he's genuinely trying his best to save remnant but every choice he has will end up with people dying and he has no good options

I think Neo knows Ruby didn't kill Torchwick. Remember when she tried to kill Cinder in V6? She blamed Cinder for Torchwick's death, not Ruby. Neo simply realized she couldn't beat Maiden Cinder in a fight. I think Neo is just biding her time until she can stab Cinder in the back.
Or maybe she's waiting to get herself a maiden power! Like the Winter maiden over there?
@@drako-ss I was thinking the same thing, but I almost don't want that to happen. As insane and awesome as Neo becoming a maiden would be, I feel like it's a bit too similar to the Raven scenario from V5. It's hardly a new plot point. "Character who stands against both the main heroes and the main villains steals the maiden powers and fights cinder?" Idk. Honestly, Im loving the plot and action so much right now idc who becomes the maiden, I know I'll love it.

Love how Cinder managed to break one of the most steadfast and righteous people in the world with just a piece of glass that she conjured and left in his office to mock him.
I ended up rewatching the last scene of this chapter again and again. I loved it. The tension rising with the music and the standoff between Ironwood and Ruby before she yeeted past him and alerted the others of his plan to declare martial law. And Ironwood's almost sorrowful "I know" as he walks away. I can only hope to create something like that in the future.
It's absolutely hilarious because Mantle was already unofficially under Martial Law. Ironwood was just going to declare it officially. It wouldn't have made a freaking difference in the end. 🤣
Strategically, Ironwood would be right. The end goal for Salem is the Staff and having a self sustained moving base of operations would be invaluable, like an Aircraft carrier.
If you stand your ground and fight, a spread out and exhausted force will not be able to hold, and even if everyone is evac-ed to Atlas, the logistics might not be sustainable. It also seems that no one really sees the Atlas soldiers as human. Yang said they were huntsmen and huntresses, but the normal rank and file are anything but. Losing the fight here will cost the war, and eventually more lives.
Ironwood did nothing wrong, and Ruby's optimism would have killed a lot more people, but i think the writers are going to tie this up nicely and make them look like big damn heroes anyway.
honestly. the smart thing to do would be Ironwoods plan. But "standing your ground in a fight" will basically ensure that everyone dies and that Salem wins. team RWBY wants to win the battle. But saving people in Mantle will make sure that they lose the war.
The problem is that Atlas is dependent on dust and the only way that we know to get dust is to mine it. As Salem said, time has always been on her side and sooner rather than later, Atlas is going to need dust and they’ll need to come back to the surface or everyone will perish. By that time, Salem would just destroy the rest of the world because she has divided the world’s military from the people that need protection the most. The rest of the world does not know about Salem. They are not prepared for her and they do not stand a chance against her. The world is too divided, which is her goal. Hell, it’s even the name of her song. Even if she didn’t get the lamp or the staff, she would have won.
I’m not saying Ruby is in the right either but he would not just be sacrificing Mantle, he would be sacrificing the rest of the world. And just after he told both Mantle and Atlas that they need to band together to defeat her. Image the panic both cities would feel the second Atlas starts raising to the sky. All that negativity would bring more Grimm and in turn, quickening Salem’s arrival. And he knows Cinder is in Atlas and she was the one that brought down the Fall maiden and Ozpin. He’s not thinking clearly. And his decision, no matter how it turns out, would all but guarantee Salem’s victory.
@@katlyncouch2553 However, do keep in mind that Atlas is the only standing military in Remnant that has any idea what they are doing. If the military gets wiped, that is it. The entire world will have to form poorly trained militias with no hardware, no equipment and no training, with no infrastructure nor base of operations nor leadership. As the saying goes, dont put all your eggs in one basket. This basket is Mantle. By retreating you preserving the forces and equipment that matters, despite how incompetent crwby likes to portray the military.
I wanna see this reaction train keep going, 2 MORE EPISODES!!!!! Building up to a million fights!!!! Tears will be shed (90% of them Arnolds). This Volume is the best one.

In all seriousness, I believe it's narrow-minded to conclude that Ironwood has just lost it, or that he's the bad guy. He's making a decision based on logic. None of his points are invalid. Team RWBY have lied to him pretty much the entire time. The only thing they've been honest with him about is the last exchange Ozma had with Djinn. It's hypocritical. I'm not 100% behind Ironwood but I'm not behind RWBY either. I think both are making errors in judgement and that saying either side is completely in the right shows a lack of understanding of the situation. I still liked the video because I love you, but I don't agree.
You can see my comment for my full point but what I wanna mention here is a point brought up in WoR. Huntsman are not tied down to any specific kingdom for their work. What this means in effect is that huntsman don’t have to just follow one kingdoms laws. They have to follow all 4 kingdoms laws. Huntsman are first and foremost essentially government agents, then public servants, then heroes. Huntsman working in atlas have to follow atlas rules. And you kind of have to agree with ironwood here. Atlas is a kingdom of science and military, both things that rely heavily on following strict rules. I knew this was going to happen when the lax “laws are just a suggestion” team RWBY went to atlas. None of them are cut out for it, and at the very least I want to see them exiled from atlas, and possibly have their many crimes made public as well so that everyone knows that whatever happens to atlas is their fault
I think Ironwood's problem here is the same as Lionheart had. Both are afraid of Salem and are going to extremes to deal with it but in different ways.

@@tenofprime There's a difference, though. While Lionheart acted purely out of fear, Ironwood is using sound, albeit cold, logic.
To be fair to team RWBY, and this is something I'm surprised no character in the show has brought up, Ironwood's plan was doomed to fail from the start, even before he changed the plan from using Amity to using Atlas. Remember: The plan was never to raise anything up into space, just high into the atmosphere. And even with Amity, that would've required regular shipments of Dust to keep it up there. Which means, it had to be low enough for the people keeping it up there to get to it and be able to breathe. And that same problem applies to Atlas. The Staff of Creation can only do one thing at a time, so Atlas still has to be low enough in the atmosphere for people to breathe. Which means, low enough for flying Grimm to be physically able to get to it. Which means, his plan from the very beginning was, at best, a temporary solution to only the problem of global communication. A band aid on a slit throat. And of course there's then the reason the plan was never to raise anything into space as so many people have erroneously said this volume: Dust stops working when it leaves Remnant's atmosphere. Source: World of Remnant: Dust. Unless that got retconned at some point, but as far as I know it hasn't.
I love seeing how much CRWBY has grown. You can see just how much they've improved with their choreography from Tyrian vs Qrow in volume 4 to Tyrian vs Qrow now
