    LIKE if you think all vehicles should be electric & SHARE if you support ocean clean-up projects like AIM ZERO
    In this final instalment of his Swedish trilogy, Andy takes to the water with X SHORE boats to find out how these cutting edge, 100% pure electric boats are having a positive impact on the environment. X SHORE, along with CAKE bikes, POLESTAR and AWAKE (boards), have formed the AIM ZERO project to promote the reduction of carbon footprint and in particular divers are using X SHORE boards to clean up Swedish waterways.
    The distinct design of the X SHORE resembles a fishing boat at the front and a modern sailing boat at the back with a flat, open design making them perfect for diving. They are modern, easy to drive and can certainly get up to some speed! With benefits of cost savings, no fumes, no engine sounds and helping the environment - could the future of boats be truly electric?

      I'm currently making an electric catamaran dinghy that will have 202.9 nautical miles or 375.77 km range @ 28.41 knots/h or 52 km/h speed & will be much cheaper than this boat. It's only 3.1m long, 2.445m wide, a much smaller battery & motor, it relies on a roof full of solar cells to recharge as it's going & will travel 101.45 nautical miles or 187.885 km on battery plus solar charging then It will need stop & wait 3.25 hours to recharge before it can travel another 101.45 nautical miles or 187.885 km on battery plus solar charging. The time between charging when the vessel is motionless can be spent fishing or diving or whatever activity needed to take up the recharging time needed. Everyone will say that this is impossible in the real world but it's not, it's purely mathematically & mechanically possible and there is an easy way to make all this possible if the weight is kept down & specifically how you reduce the drag of the material that goes though the water, unfortunately most boat manufactures refuse to use this method anymore because it's too efficient.

    Excellent product. Small, high torque motors are perfectly suited to boating. When you think about a boating holiday, on a narrow boat for instance, the image is, silently, meandering the waterways enjoying nature etc. The reality is the constant and deafening thump-thump-thump of a huge deseasil engine and the headache inducing fumes that go with it. Replace that with EV, partly, or "fully charged" by solar panels on the roof and away you go!

    I went onboard the Xshore in September 2019 at the Cannes boat show. Nice to see you covering it. Incredibly expensive for a small open top boat. Main issue is economies of scale for buying in the batteries which greatly increases the cost of the boat. Last year almost all orders were from Superyacht owners; it now looks like it's also being sold or leased to specific projects such as the one shown in the video. Interested to see what other boats they have in their pipeline. We really need to decarbonise the thousands of existing motor and sailing boats; that will take an interesting business model though and it's much harder to retrofit than build new. I can't see thousands of fibreglass yachts being scrapped to make way for new yachts as, aside from recycling and other environmental impacts, that is a lot of money to scrap.

      In the sun, a 250w panel might make 200w for 10 hours a day, so 2kWh. With 120kWh of batteries, it could be fully charged in 2 months...

    • @TheAssassinPanda
      @TheAssassinPanda 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@inkpen1999 well I said some charging, not the full battery. I was thinking along the lines of the Lightyear One Car, just add a little to extend the range or take care of radios or some other stuff.
      I was thinking 375W panels, you could probably fit 6 of those and in a good day that's about 9kWh.
      Could add even more bifacial panels and fold them out to increase area when the boat is stationary.

    • @dwaneanderson8039
      @dwaneanderson8039 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Olav H Solar panels are pretty cheap these days, and compared to the price of a new boat, their cost is insignificant. How much is it worth to have an endless source of extra power on your boat when you're out at sea?

    • @sustainablenv
      @sustainablenv 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Olav H Given the cost of that boat, the solar panels would be a tiny proportion of the retail price. But as other's have said, it would provide very little energy for the boat's propulsion; for ancillary items in warmer climates, then yes, it's a good idea. And as Carlos said, you could fit far more than a 250W panel though a much longer roof would be required; 500W would certainly be possible on the existing roof, though lighter weight, more efficient flexible panels should be on the market in the next 12-18 months, so 1kW is possible within the next 2 years with a longer roof. Folding out panels is possible though that certainly adds weight and complexity (it's best to keep maintenance down to a minimum on a boat!).

      "Silent Yachts" have some amazing 60 & 80 foot cruiser solar-powered catamaran models, but I haven't seen anyone marketing for the 30-45 foot live-aboard type layout yet. It may take time for the market to expand down to the lower budgets. Right now they are getting as many orders as they can build for the $2-7million bigger boats.
      Just like electric cars, I'm sure builders are going to supply the high-margin luxury market first, then use the profits to develop more mass-market models as they can afford to invest in more factories.

Where diesel and heavy fuel engines are treated like reciprocating steam engines are today in the texts, and a firm understanding of verifying battery chemistries are the norm.

    A good episode but have to say the restaurant owner should be paying to clean up litter the customers have dropped overboard.
    Electric narrow boats would work in the UK coupled with a reasonable battery store.

    I want more of THAT

    Seems like your color grading was a bit off in some shots; grayish tint there. Otherwise, great show and interesting content as always! Keep it up.

    Hmm... no mention of if there was or was plans for solar on the roof... Even if it's not much, it could help with charging if you don't use the boat much, or even possibly as a limp-home feature :)

    For me, as a SAIL boat sailor, I have always found the non-sail, pleasure boat somewhere between evil and totally evil, for various reasons, mainly environmental. But I can't object to the electric boat, provided it is powered by renewable energy. I will welcomely change my attitude because this helps the way to a clean, sustainable future. I would still encourage people to pleasure SAIL though, for the real adventure. 👍

    Guys when the earliest fully charged I could find on TH-cam was published the Tesla model S was not yet in production. This channel is not about selling electric vehicles is about encouraging as much of the world to go zero carbon as possible. If you cannot buy this boat today, you might be able to buy it’s descendants in 5 , 10 or 20 years but if boats like this don’t exist it won’t have descendants.

    Well obviously I want one. Doesn't look very all-weathery so I guess it'll just have to be hot, sunny days I use one.
    I see another new presenter too. I've clearly missed something.

    Check "Sailing Uma". They have an all electric ocean sailing boat. Sailing La Vagabonde is a Catamatage also in the process of going all electric.

    Very cool. Curious on a couple of details: 1) what form of propeller is used (i.e. are the blades open or enclosed) and where on the boat is it located (I _know_ it's on the bottom...what part :-) ); and 2) are there any issues with wildlife not knowing the boat is there because it's so quiet?
