    Very nice setup. 60 nautical miles is plenty for such a boat. And it would be fairly easy/cheap to double it probably. I bet there's a lot of ballast in that boat that can be swapped out for more battery. But aside from the economics and the sustainability; imagine how nice it is to not spend your whole day with diesel noise, vibrations, and fumes. That looks like nice part of the world to be out on the water and enjoy it in peace.

    • @pauls3075
      @pauls3075 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes just ignore the fact that someone else is breathing in the diesel fumes used to create the electricity that powers this boat.

    • @GruffSillyGoat
      @GruffSillyGoat 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      @@pauls3075 - did you watch the video? The boat is predominately solar charged over an extended summer period, and only charges at the dock's electrical point periodicaly outside this period. Diesel isn't used in the UK for grid electricity, which is predominately generated by renewables and zero carbon these days, no coal, with decreasing levels of natural gas and a tiny bit of waste burning make up the rest.

    • @pauls3075
      @pauls3075 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@GruffSillyGoat You just made that up you fool and have no evidence to back it up. The actual figures from the national grid (who do know what they're talking about) say 51% of electric was from renewables thats 49% from gas and diesel, burnt to provide power to 'electric vehicles'.

    • @turbokadett
      @turbokadett 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@pauls3075 Give it a rest you troll. We can all access the National Grid figures and they clearly show your talking bullshit.
      Even when fossil fuels are used in grid scale powerstations they offer far greater efficiencies than an internal combustion engine but Scotland's grid mix is heavily skewed towards renewable generation. Looking right now (06/10/24 - Sunday afternoon) North Scotland's carbon intensity is precisely zero with the grid in that area being fed with 91.3% wind and 8.7% Hydro.

    • @GruffSillyGoat
      @GruffSillyGoat 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      @@pauls3075 - Why so angry and aggressive?
      I see you misread my statement, diesel isn't used for *_Grid Electricity_* as you implied the boat was being powered by diesel indirectly; that is everyday power on the grid predominately comes from the other sources listed.
      Where diesel, or more accurately gas-oil, generation is used it's in OCGT power plants that are used for rapid-peaking/frequency/synchronous compensation needs as well as in remote, mainly island, location generators with poor grid connectivity. That is it's they are not a constant power generation source on the UK's grid that would support your claim of indirect emissions to any degree. With only ~850MW of OCGT/local generator power in the UK,

    Of all the segments that you have presented I love this one the most, Imogen. When I was driving around in my lead acid battery Destiny2000 converted Pontiac Fiero with solar panels on it some 25ish years or so ago, it was fully useable, I knew that a little more tweaking would bring us a market ready EV. As a pioneer I had to walk the Department of Motor Vehicles through the immissions process. I had to walk my insurance company through how to insure the vehicle. Etc. etc. It was so new. Seeing that Hans Unkles is in the same "boat" that I was in so many years ago leads me to believe that in a few short years there will be a far more capable electric lobster boat more capable of taking in the sun to power it entirely. Thank you Imogen.

    There is likely a market for this kind of thing. Lots of fishing is local - puttering out to lobster pots, shrimps, crabs, mussel beds, salmon nets etc The range doesn't have to be enormous, e.g. 10 miles in and out and solar over the vessel should be more than adequate. Over time it would pay for itself, not just in fuel savings but time savings not having to moor up at some fuel dock.

I also liked the fact the team allowed him to tell his own story, a story where many who might of wanted to take this dream failed due to lack of assistance and knowledge from the authorities even for a boat builder this would be daunting. This story also harps back to the early days when Robert would go fish out new ideas or developments, nice to see your taking up the challenge Imogen. Wonderful video shots too!!

    being a boatbuilder myself, and owning an ev, I am super chuffed with this future. I was bought up in the UK (west country) and admired the rescue life boats that roared down the rails into that vast unknown. Also, before that, I lived in Cowes for a few years when I was just a kid, and had the thrill of meeting the legendary Uffa Fox, even then I knew he was a genius. Of course he did not remember our meeting but he did buy my tin of rag worms I had spent hours digging up in the mud banks of the Medina. 2 shillings! an absolute fortune for us kids in those days. In fact my mate Pip Richardson and myself sort of started up our first business after that, selling them off the ferry pier. With all this sudden wealth the local fish and chip man thought he had won the lotto! or was it the pools? Anyway it did not last long, we moved again this time to the west country.

The big difference is that an EV only needs to do the mining once. Where as ICE requires constant material extraction from earth.

    Thank you and congratulations! He's getting great results, and that's from what is NOT the ideal hull or configuration for that setup. If you put a solar canopy (with booster vertical wind turbines for cloudy windy days as is typical in the north atlantic) on a sort of warren/polynesian-style catamaran rig, it would be even more efficient, faster, more stable, without needing ballast, shorter draft, having more storage/catch capacity, more working deck area, greater solar area per waterline length, etc.
    We need a manufacturer to take up the call of producing reasonable priced solar/wind fishing catamarans for local/coastal fishing. The investment for the fishermen would more than pay off in reduced expenses and environmental benefits around the world, as well as improved quality of life for the fishers themselves. Some modified & insulated half-pipe pontoon hulls with deck-hatch access for catch holds, and a strut-supported sheet-metal cross-deck could be put together for an economy price.

    Honest, being a non-native English speaker myself I can barely get 70% of this nice folk's words, but it really still come through, he has a better boat and stop spending on expensive diesel and all the maintenance that comes with running engine in the water
    Thanks for covering this, much appreciated!

      Not surprised you're only getting 70%, he's Scottish not English, which is a different country. 😃

      no worries, my Australian wife worked for a Scottish man in Brisbane, her biggest problem was just trying to understand him😄 Anyway, he was great. We now live in NZ and my best mate is a Scottish lad, and we have had endless discussions over a few wee drams comparing our two cultures ( I am a Pom).. The result was -- in the end, we are both as bad as each other. But fun anyway! we could recap on our countries past illustrious and barbaric histories, and just shake our heads, history is history.
      Having had a recent visit to the UK for the first time in 60 years, , I am now convinced the poms and the Scottish were always at war with somebody! I have never seen so many bloody castles! When I was a kid I thought there was a fish and chip shop on every corner, now I think perhaps there is a castle on every corner. Compared with here, I now realize how far we are from the so-called civilized world, and all that ancient history, good and bad, but very interesting all the same.

      @@TerryHickey-xt4mf I visited New Zealand a year ago, plenty of blood-dripping history there, too. Humans, amirite? 😅 Saw an excellent war canoe in a museum and went "that is for all practical purposes a viking ship!" Greetings from Norway, another currently mostly peaceful corner of the world.
