Of all the segments that you have presented I love this one the most, Imogen. When I was driving around in my lead acid battery Destiny2000 converted Pontiac Fiero with solar panels on it some 25ish years or so ago, it was fully useable, I knew that a little more tweaking would bring us a market ready EV. As a pioneer I had to walk the Department of Motor Vehicles through the immissions process. I had to walk my insurance company through how to insure the vehicle. Etc. etc. It was so new. Seeing that Hans Unkles is in the same "boat" that I was in so many years ago leads me to believe that in a few short years there will be a far more capable electric lobster boat more capable of taking in the sun to power it entirely. Thank you Imogen.
What a massively sensible man. This is the best video I have seen on your channel. More personal experiences like this would really help to get people to transition to electric solutions.
There is likely a market for this kind of thing. Lots of fishing is local - puttering out to lobster pots, shrimps, crabs, mussel beds, salmon nets etc The range doesn't have to be enormous, e.g. 10 miles in and out and solar over the vessel should be more than adequate. Over time it would pay for itself, not just in fuel savings but time savings not having to moor up at some fuel dock.
Hans Unkles has done an amazing job and this story of helping with the introduction of new codes of practice and getting the job done. The solar panels also make a fantastic roof to work under.
He's so right about taking that leap... I was resistant but went for it with car, solar and batteries and have never regretted a single moment or penny spent.
Another idea I've had is to have a horizontal flywheel with a weighted section that generates power by the pitching and rolling of the boat. Obviously it wouldn't generate power in the flat calm of this video, but around the UK, flat calm is rare...
Delightful. A brilliant result from a remarkable man. At the same time it's quite shocking that it needs a clued-up practical individual to actually get on and do it ... proving it's possible ... when we have boat builders and engineering companies and investors who appear to be sitting on their hands. What an amazing story Imogen, Hans Unkles truly is a light at the end of a very long tunnel in the fishing industry, and I have to admire his determination to pursue his dream of owning and running an electric fishing boat.
