    LIKE if you would like to try this out & SHARE if you support ocean-cleaning initiatives like the AIM ZERO Project. Full description below....
    Whilst we usually talk about the application, functional use and emissions benefits of EVs - some EVs are just for fun! In the second of his Swedish trilogy, Andy Torbet meets with Awake Boards who have developed some incredible, fully electric surfboards.
    These boards work via a hand control and have a choice of batteries that can be easily fitted with the bigger battery giving up to 1 hour of riding time. Whilst these boards are aimed at the high end market, Awake are using the technology to work on more functional search and rescue equipment. They're also part of the AIM ZERO project in Sweden along with CAKE bikes, X-Shore boats & Polestar. But the real question is how many times will Andy fall off??

      I imagine that someone will start a hire business so you'll be able to experience it for money you can afford. It might not be the kind of thing one would want to buy anyhow - if you're only going to have time to play with it every now and then.

    • @Arek_R.
      @Arek_R. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Electric surfboards from the past were around 50k so this one is actually quite reasonable.
      Don't expect it to be 1k just because you're poor and that's what you could pay for something like that.
      If you want to make it yourself it's like 4-10k just in parts depending on target power.

    • @richardclarke3924
      @richardclarke3924 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Arek R. It’s not about “being poor” Arek R, it’s that Fullychraged has been a channel about EV transportation and clean energy promotion and is the reason I think the channel does so much good and does it well. If it’s going to promote rich kids toys it’s should be honest about the limitations of the product they are advertising I.e the price tag and if you see from the comments a lot of people agree. It’s a great piece of kit without a doubt but it’s not really going to cut down congestion in Stockholm any time soon and for that reason I question the need for it to feature on Fullycharged. I’ve seen John do other shows on quirky modes of transport, the skateboard/mono wheel/scooter episode was filmed 100 yards from my house but all the kit featured had a viable contribution to reducing urban connection. The Cake bike episode also showcased a really smart bike. Just questioning the logic, of the feature.
      Regards

    Only just seen this, how awesome, & regarding the comments on cost, well I have wakeboarded for some years, great fun, no where near as much fun as these babies, Wake boarding, is great but you are totally dependent on other forces/people, & have to follow where the boat pulls you.
    For a good wakeboard set up, you could be talking £250 thousand. Hi tech twin inboards, trailer, towing vehicle, out of use storage, believe me £15k for this kind of independent fun, thrown in the back of a van, I’d say worth every penny & more. Split the cost between four, & all I see are some great experiences.

  • @animistchannel2983
    @animistchannel2983 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    For every gas-powered jet-ski that gets replaced by one of these, the world is a better place. From his later comments, it sounds like they are going directly against that market next. I say, "Bravo!" An electric surf board is cute. If that leads to an electric 1- or 2-man small fishing boat or yacht tender, that could replace a lot of noisy, dirty motorboats... with blessed clean peace.
    People are going to have their toys, at whatever price point they can afford; and if you want to get the leisurely, wealthy & influential to support the EV transition, you have to include them in it. This also means we get to use their money to fund development of more modest products and systems, for ramping up scales of economy for those who need that.
    Think strategically, people! Don't be bitching about the price because it's out of your range for now. Just be glad they are selling well to people who could otherwise afford to drive water-toys that create massive amounts of noise, pollution, and turbulence in our fresh and coastal waters that are the most sensitive to toxicity and disruption.
    As these kinds of products work towards mass-production and lowered costs, they will also have developed more efficient systems and better battery packs. In exchange for waiting for them to come to your price point, you will get a better product with more range and so on. For now, you can afford to let the rich kids and the true fanatics be your beta-testers.

    • @animistchannel2983
      @animistchannel2983 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @mark bushnell Yes, thank you, yes you do. These electric ones seem more aimed at the towed-wakeboard and jet-ski crowd, though. They aren't really for surfing, after all, but more for flat-water riding.
      That's why I was on about these things maybe getting some gas engines off the sensitive waterways. It's the wakeboard without the 200hp of dirty disturbance in nature.
      The cool (and almost scary) thing in surfboards these days are those "wingboards" with the hydrofoils under them. Have you seen that? Holy khao! Surfers be getting into all kinds of mad speed in shoal-draft waters on those.
      I've always been a sail & paddle guy myself, but I'm thinking I could retire to live on one of those new kinds of solar-paneled cruiser boats. Similar kind of quiet but without all the hard labor and hoisting things about.
      Clearly, when it comes to all the noise & excitement, "I'm getting too old for this shit." I just want to glide around peaceful-like and maybe get a spot of fishing in :)

    • @crazEgamer201
      @crazEgamer201 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even ignoring that, I will never own a jetski or a powered surfboard or any other high cost single use luxury device. I may, however, rent one if it's available nearby. You set up a course for these things in a small lake and rent them by the charge, I can imagine I and many others would rather give this a whack than a petrol powered jetski.

      Indeed, but can you afford one: they are only a bit cheaper than bottom of the range cars, so like most boating toys 'reassuringly expensive'. This should improve somewhat over time. I see you can get a paddleboard motor for £500, which won't be as exciting, but is it a little less excessive.

    As summer is over for my part of the world and due to covid it wasn't much of a summer...it's nice to see this today and dream about better days. I know they aren't inexpensive, but like with all new things, the prices will come down and if you are truly in the market and have a summer holiday home, it is something worth looking into as the prices will not be as much of a shock since the market is generally for those who have the income to spend on leisure.

  • @tswrench
    @tswrench 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It seems a lot of these electric surfboards, wakeboards--what have you--place the rider in an awkward stance with the front foot higher than the back foot. This results in a fundamental imbalance. The fact that the propulsion comes from behind, like a wave, should be the guiding principle as to how this board should plane on the water. If these boards were to level-off at planing speed, the rider could stand with their weight forward on an even footing, and heel-to-toe turning would look and feel a lot more natural. It looks like this board is designed to plane like a wakeboard that's being pulled from the front, and it that's why it looks awkward to ride with too much front foot lift coming from a bow wave created by the nose rocker. I've been surfing for well over 40 years, and I wouldn't want to ride in a stance like that, as it eliminates too many options.

    • @Fredrilguste
      @Fredrilguste 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could always ride without footstraps / bindings and have that free feels like surfing!

    • @tswrench
      @tswrench 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Fredrilguste - I don't have a problem with the footstraps, really. It's the way the board planes, so it has more to do with the bottom design, and possibly the weight distribution. The e-foils do a better job of leveling the tilt of the board when the board achieves planing speed.

      This is the issue with these products from small volume manufacturers is the cost. Because their factory and their scale it's hard to get this to a more consumer friendly price point. There is also an electric hoverboard or something similar problem over 10,000 US if not 20K. You could buy a small electric car. The issue is scale and the price of parts for small volume manufacturing. This is why Elon and others push hard for outside investment so they can manufacture the product at a point that made consumer sense.

      Totally agree €16K, is a big ask for anyone other than 1%’ers who will see it just as another toy.

      @@pipstein612 The funny thing apparently I would imagine tons of surfboard experts would buy it just watched a video of Casey where he went to a place that has a wave maker and it costs 50K for a day to rent. Apparently tons of surfboarders go their to use it this is the likely crowd who too would put up the 16K to buy one. There is a market but a very small one for sure.

    Wow expensive. $18,660.00 You could buy almost 2 Zero DS electric motorcycles for that.

    Who would have thought, a surfboard that doesn't run on fossil fuel, next they'll invent a boat that gets blown along by the wind.

    Great video! Like others, I too think we should have been able to hear the board running in the water. There was too much of that horribly over compressed obligatory rubbish music.

    And it is so affordable... just 16000 Euros. But it is electric, it has to be worth a brandnew small car. You guys are really losing it.
    This show is not about making a change with alterantives anymore, this just went to being a big advertising channel for overpriced electric gadgets.
    This is really sad.
