    I wonder how the Sharrow prop would do on this...

    • @llahneb10
      @llahneb10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was thinking the same thing. I imagine the increased range and speed would justify the additional 4-5k price

    • @kfeltenberger
      @kfeltenberger ปีที่แล้ว

      I've asked this question on several videos about the prop; how will it work with a conventional, non-outboard/non-sterndrive system and *never* got an answer. Like Fox Mulder, I want to believe...but until they start releasing some numbers on inboard or even pod drive systems, I'm not going to put a lot of energy into the system.

      I think this thought is a permanent fixture in the minds of Boat Test viewers.

      @@kfeltenberger from what I understand, the efficiency gains are not case-specific… It will always be more efficient that a propeller no matter where it is, primarily because it overcomes the one big loss that props have, tip vortices.

    • @kfeltenberger
      @kfeltenberger ปีที่แล้ว

      @@llahneb10 I'm aware of this...however, the absolute lack of any sort of reply or comment about this from Sharrow is something to take note of. You would think that they'd be preaching their product in every possible use case.

    Where’s the Solar? Not covering that top in solar feels like a wasted opportunity.

    I still think they need a slot or something that you can hook up a cordless drill or any other swappable battery pack as a BACKUP, just In case you get stuck miles from shore. You won't go very fast but it beats being out there alone and adrift. Why do you think Cap'n. STEVE?

    • @ignasanchezl
      @ignasanchezl ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that they think that the range extender feature that gives you 10 miles of idle power once the battery runs low is good enough of a backup for most disaster scenarios. OFC someone is gonna still be stupid and have to be towed back home lol.

    I appreciate the detailed review of the numbers but I think battery life maintenance was not addressed. One of my vehicles is an EV and the manufacturer is very quick to point out that you should only charge to 100% when necessary and not keep it there for storage. They also state that a 70-85% state of charge is optimal for battery longevity. I assume the science is the same for the X Shore battery. I am a believer that there is a space for EVs (to include boats) but battery life is a consideration that needs to be taken into account.

    • @thedeportedmule3653
      @thedeportedmule3653 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you're saying about EV's is true, but you have to look at the use case for boats. The EV manufacturers don't want people getting in the habit of plugging in every day after work and having the car sit at 100% all night just for them to drive 20 miles the next day and only drain it 10%. The fact that the majority of boat owners only use it for 20 some days a year makes the damage of charging the battery to 100% negligible. X-shore states to store the boat between 25-35% and then charge it to 100% right before going out. If you follow that regimen, these batteries will degrade much slower than an EV's.

    It seems like most people here don't realize this boat was not built for the American market. This is clearly not your kind of party boat to have a BBQ at the sandbar drinking canned soda and cheap beer.
    It might not be the best design for activities, however the easy boarding and the open deck that as a bonus allow it to keep the bilge dry, combined with it's silent performance with a very stable ride makes this boat look like an amazing runabout for people with shoreside residences, where it can be charged just like many charge their cars with simple 120V outlets overnight. Specially great since it would keep many from burning copious amounts of fuel in their day to day activities.
    It might also make for a great "cab" boat for resorts and other places.
    I like it, but it needs a few competitors for it's price to drop.

    In Dec 2022 I refurbished a 32' aluminum boat and called around about an electric conversion so I have a good idea about battery packs and EV hardware pricing. X Shore should sell the same boat in four configurations: diesel inboard, outboard, hybrid, and EV (for those who want it). The battery pack and EV drivetrains are still over $100k part of this $300K boat. So they could be selling this model for $150-$200k and be selling a lot of them. Tesla has economies of scale this boat company doesn't.

    Like electric cars. Is it 100% perfect for everyone no. But the VAST majority of users will never actually have to worry about the range.

  • @bnkwupt
    @bnkwupt ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting boat. It’s worth correcting you on kW vs kWh. Kilowatts and kilowatt hours. Kilowatts are like horsepower (power), and kilowatt hours are like gallons of gas (energy). Referring to both as “kilowatts” is inaccurate and confusing.
    Regarding your range chart, something doesn’t add up. kW increase as speed increases on plane, as expected, but range stays flat over a wide range of speeds. If power consumption increases, range must decrease, so I don’t understand what’s going on in your table.

    • @BoatTEST
      @BoatTEST  ปีที่แล้ว

      The charts are correct. As power increased, speed is also increased, which allows the boat to have a range from 28 miles to 22 miles, depending on both speed and power consumption.

    I'm happy to see a review of a boat under 40 feet. The super yachts are cool, but it's a bit much, especially after watching the 5th straight video of some chit you'll never have. Maybe change it up, do a go fast boat for once.

    • @atnfn
      @atnfn ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn't really seem like electic boats work with today's technology. I guess boats have a bit more in common with planes than you would think at first. Both sort of "float" and when they get too heavy they get inefficient so you can't just pack em full of batteries.

    • @ignasanchezl
      @ignasanchezl ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest 126kWh is not even on the far end of how much battery capacity you could throw in a boat this size. I really think that they simply did not build this with the American market in mind, but rather as a feasible, first time production project that will work for the market it was intended, Sweden.

  • @jefffawcett1626

    I think I'll take a hard pass. With the initial expense and limited range this boat looks to me to best fit a tender application? As a runabout, day cruiser and/or family boat, the 20-30 mi. range would be too limiting a factor. Also, there was no mention of towing water skiers or toys. If the land based EV pickups are any guide, expect the range to be dramatically cut. IMHO the tech and infrastructure has a LONG way to go before you'd begin to see widespread adoption. Finally, I really enjoy this channel and Capt. Steve's reviews but agree with others I don't need any more climate religion being preached.

    Lithium ion the ones that explode and not a lithium iron phosphate lifepo4. How many cycle charges can you get out of it. I’ll stick with gas for now

    • @ignasanchezl
      @ignasanchezl ปีที่แล้ว

      If they are classic Lithium ion (LCO) at least 1200 cycles, Lithium iron phosphate can do over 8000 before loosing 20% of their capacity.

  • @kfeltenberger

    This is nice and I'm a fan of electric drive, but I'm not fan enough to spend $400k to virtue signal. This is a nice tech demonstrator, but IMO, that's all it is and ever will be. Beyond canal speeds, it's got ~25 miles range. That gives, to me, zero margin of error if bad weather moves in, if you just drift out into the Gulf, or whatever. No one is going to be able to hand over a couple jerry cans of fuel so you can get back to dock. I'd rather see a small generator that could either supplement the batteries or act as an emergency power source.
    And then there's the charging...that ties you to a handful of locations and depending on the location, could require an overnight slip rental. Like I said, I want to believe, but other than something I'd piddlie around with on a small lake, I'll do a hard pass. Especially for this price and absolute lack of amenities. Spending a day on the water without a toilet? Yeah...pass.

    • @alt572
      @alt572 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They apparently offer hybrid versions, so I am sure a generator is not impossible. As Steve said in the video, the boat is designed in sweden and for sweden. Most common use of a boat there is traveling to the cottage and back, not so much going to a sandbar for the day.
      Sure it is expensive, but so is anything new. This is for early adopters with stacks. They will get to enjoy their cottage trips without engine noise or maintenance. Maybe in 10 years you and me can have a shot at it.

      @ignasanchezl ปีที่แล้ว

      I still find it cool that once it runs out you still can idle for over 10 miles, so really its hard to end up adrift with no power.

  • @Gyppor
    @Gyppor ปีที่แล้ว

    A hybrid version of this system with a 25-30hp gas generator would be a way more usable way to power this boat. As it it, 40 minutes of battery at WOT is woefully inadequate IMO. Sure it will do for a lot of trips that people will make, but the fact that it simply can't tackle a longer voyage as it is will turn a lot of customers off. That and the price!

    • @johnsm100
      @johnsm100 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are generally re-used in less demanding applications such as storage packs and when their efficiency finally diminishes (which in practise is many years) they are recycled in the new plants that are springing up. The recycling is >90% efficient so the lithium and other chemicals can have an essentially endless useful life once mined.
