- Interested in sublimation, but not sure where to start? That was me too! I finally made the decision to go for it and bought an EPSON EcoTank ET-4800 to convert into a sublimation printer!
I walk you through each step of the conversion process. From opening the box, filling the ink tanks and all printer & computer setups needed to begin your sublimation journey!
Printer Set Up:
I am so sorry, but I forgot a VERY important setting for your printer, and that is you color setting!
Though different inks may give you different instructions (see the paperwork that comes with the ink you purchase) there is a setting you need to make to give you beautiful colors!
In you printer preferences, go to "more options". In the "Color Correction" section, select "Custom". Hit the "advanced" button. Select "Color Controls" and change the "Color Mode" to "Adobe RGB"! Hit "ok". This makes a HUGE different in the print color and quality!

I use the same ET 4800 and i use the Asub paper and my prints come out just fine. when i try and print with DTF paper my prints come out with pizza wheel marks. i have tried to mess with the settings and still same results. anybody know a fix for this or a good setting to stop the wheel marks?
Oh no! Unfortunately I have not had any issues like this so I don't know that I can be of any help. However, I will pin your comment to the top and hopefully someone else will see it who may be able to help!

If you leave the silver seal on the ink and poke the edge with the needle, you can lay the ink on its side slightly elevated to extract the ink mess free by inserting the needle, using syringe as normal. I then used masking tape to tape the needle and syringe to the bottle of unused ink and put the cap back on the needle so I don't mix the needles up. In manage printer you can also rename it Sublimation Printer or something so you know it has special ink and not to confuse with another printer.

I just discovered your video and love the way you explain things! I just bought a used Epsen 4800 for a great price and it's in perfect condition. the guy we bought it from explained almost everything the same way you did. My husband and I are just starting our sublimation journey. The one question I have is, there is ink in the tanks from when we bought it and we want to top it off. Is there a special way to do this or should we just fill the syringe half way? Any help is appreciated!

As long as the ink that was already in the printer was sublimation ink, and you had the same kind, then you should have just been able to add to it! On mine I can see, for the most part when it is getting full
I use the cap on the epson ink like as a funnel. The ink reserves have thin plastic for walls. easily pierced with a needle.

I'm happy to hear this is helpful! From the research I did, it is my understanding that they lost the most popular ecotank printers in the title, but most of the sublimation inks will say somewhere in the description "works with all ecotank printers". The 4800 is a newer version so it isn't listed many places yet. I can't promise that is 100% true, but just what I have found. I can tell you I have had no issues with the sublimation ink I purchased! It is linked in the description if you wanted to check it out.

Hey! It is called micro piezo heat-free technology!
"This does not require heat in the ink ejection process. Instead, pressure is applied to the Piezo element, which flexes backwards and forwards firing the ink from the printhead." It is important because you don't want the ink to receive heat until it is being pressed. 💗
Do you know when you open the ink how long it’s shelf life is? & did that ink come with the syringes?
The ink did come with the syringes! However, I can't seem to get an answer for shelf life after opening. I submitted the question on Amazon to customers and the company, but haven't received a response.
So I started to use the classic printers jack and I'm struggling with the needs so I purchased the auto fill, it's the same ink so I can mix it correct?
If it is the same, then it should be fine to mix! But you may want to do a bit of additional research to double check! 💗
I am trying to do sublimation tumblers, and I am having trouble with the borderless setting, do you have any suggestions. Also, my colors are cmybk, do I change it to rbg?

I'm not sure if I installed my printer correctly, I say this as I can't find the section in manage settings where I choose the paper settings. What I did was I linked my printer to my laptop via wifi? Was that incorrect? I do not javelin a cromebook only a Lenovo but of course I have and use crome as my browser. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
Imma gonna level with you here, I just override the printer by hitting "ok" to proceed "with paper loaded in back of printer" I just do that each time I print. Which works because I don't keep paper loaded, that way noone can accidentally print to the wrong printer and waste my materials 😅
I have this printer but my USB and needs it for his work so I don’t see how I would be able to switch out the ink. Can you use sublimation ink with normal printer use and also making stickers?
Sorry about my delay! I was on vacation! Unfortunately, once you convert the printed to sublimation, it can no longer be used to typical use. They strongly suggest not switching the inks back and forth because they will get contaminated, and you would have to learn how to flush the entire printer to clear the previous ink. The sublimation ink is not meant to last long term, but i have used it a few times, in a pinch, for a couple things that I just need printed that I knew would be thrown away soon. The printed image is also very dull because the "true" colors don't show up until they are heat released by the press! I hope this is helpful! Happy to answer any other questions you may have!
Hi! In another video you did you talk about changing the drivers for better sublimation printing with these printer. I have the same printer and I was wonderig if you know the correct settings, please? Also it's interetig to see that your printer preferences and mines are completely different. On my printer display I dont get the mirror image option. I don't understand why
I am currently out of town, so I am unable to pull the paperwork, however, I did write everything out in full detail in the description! Could you check there to see if it helps answer your question? If not, I'll try to remember to look when I get back in town on Sunday!
Also, my mirror image option is in the "more options" tab, not the "main" tab, in the printer preference window. I'm hoping that can help you locate it! I hope this is helpful!

I felt the same way. I think any of the EcoTanks are a safe bet, but then you'll just need to take your budget and how large you want to be able to print into consideration.
Can you print with 8.5x14” sublimation paper?
Yes! I have printed on "legal" sized paper multiple times without issue!
I have an Epson 4800 but it is printing in black and white. Any advice?
It sounds like it is a setting problem! Double check that your settings are correct, and that the program you are printing from isn't overriding your settings! If nothing else, turn it off for a few seconds and turn it back on! It could simply need a reboot! 💕
How do u get the printer to recharge the ink if let's say u change it from regular ink to sub ink
I'm so sorry, I don't know the answer to that because mine was brand new when I set it up. I know you are supposed to flush the ink lines to avoid cross contamination, but I have no idea what that process is. My apologies! Best of luck!
Help- what setting would I use for ultra presentation paper? Would ink jet paper work? I’ve tried regular presentation paper but murky colors :-: this printer has had me frustrated for a bit so hoping u can help :-:
I'm so sorry that I am just now seeing your comment! Unfortunately I am not any help! I have only used this printed with the sublimation paper.
What’s the largest size can this print
Can i use this ink for regular printing i print i print documents and if water falls on the paper it gets smudged and then the document is trash because I can't read it. Any insight welcome
You cannot. Full technically if you really needed to print something for a temporary print you could. However, sublimation ink is not made for everyday printing news and it will diminish over time, and always look faded, and subject to smudging, until pressed. Sorry, dear!
Do you like the size of prints you get? I see this one prints 8.5 x 11. I have seen many people getting sub printers that do 15 x 17. Would you say the 8.5 x 11 is large enough? Thank you. Thinking of getting one and can’t decide.
So far, this size has worked well for me. If I need a larger size, I will have to cut/puzzle them together. I will say, if you plan to do tshirts, you may want a printer that prints larger sizes, to say yourself some work. I, however, don't have plans to to many shirts. This printer it capable of printing longer paper! I've used legal sized paper in it, but I do believe it can do even longer than that. However, 8.5 is the widest it can go. I hope that is helpful! 💗
Can this printer handle Canson 300gsm watercolor paper?
I attempted to research this a bit, since I am not familiar with watercolor paper. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find much information. I'm very sorry! I know it can be thicker, so I'm really unsure on it it will jam or not.
How did you download Epson smart panel on you HP Computer ?
I downloaded everything I needed through the website it provides in the paperwork.
Hello..what about 4x6 prints? Seen one review that says it wasnt clear on no matter what they did...that scares me a tad...since we will mainly doing mugs and tumblers...i want high res pics with no issues...any input appreciated...thanks.
sublimation ink prints dull. The colors become vibrant when heated to material in a heat press. This isn't to be used for regular prints unless applying them to polyester material with heat.

I am so sorry about my delay! I've been moving and unable to keep up with responding! I am out of town, so I can't look at my manual right now. However, I pretty positive the largest it can print is 8.5"x17"

Oh no! I have not sublimated on vinyl yet, but off hand, I would just suggest you check your printer settings! Something I missed in this video (but put in the description after) is an additional advanced setting for better coloration! Go to "more options". In the "Color Correction" section, select "Custom". Are you talking about how it prints on the sublimination paper OR after you heat pressure it on to you shirt or blank?

I also just completed a sublimination camp which I learn a little of a LOT 🤣. Is the vinyl you used HTV type? I still haven't got a printer but bought subliminate pens to color with until I choose my printer either Epson ET 4800 or ET 2850. Heading toward 2850 because at Costco and they have good customer service 🤗. Good luck hoping things get brighter 😉

The ink that I have linked is what I have been using since I purchased the printer and I haven't had any issues with it! They don't physically list the 4800 model, but say it should work for all spdon ecotank systems.

Have you found any ICC Profiles for the ET-4800? I use Hippo Sublimation Ink but the colors aren’t the greatest.
I haven't looked for anything outside of the paperwork that came with my inks. I'm sorry you aren't happy with your colors. Have you gone into the advanced custom settings? I had to edit a portion of this video bc I forgot to include it. You can find specifics of what I'm talking about in my description.

This would be any lines or images that are missing from your printer when you are running your checks, or printing an image.
My printer asked for a password . Did it ask for a password to install ? I bought it brand new.

Hi I recently got an epson ecotank et 2826 and want to convert it to sublimation too. Do you know if it works with this one too. I heard every ecotank can be converted but I’m not going to open the box if I can’t because then I’m going to try to return it for a suitable one. Thank you in advance
From all of the research I did previously, and from what I'm still seeing, this is the consistent answer! "Any Epson EcoTank printer can be used for sublimation printing. The important things to look for are that it uses Piezo technology and that it has the fillable tanks."
