whatever "IT" is, these girls got it. everything is just so pleasing- the music, the sound, the visuals, their aesthetic, the vibes their songs give off, EVERYTHING. it would've been a beyond perfect debut for me if Cookie had age appropriate lyrics so that's just a little disappointing because all their other songs and concepts were age appropriate. there was actually a posted explanation that it's a cutesy song, and "cookie" was a metaphor for a CD but still it's a little.. sus. HYBE is a worldwide company, they should've been more careful of how their english lyrics would be taken. but i still love the group & don't fault the girls for it

That’s not how it works with hybe….. they fund content and ador has all the creative control… it’s their own company and hybe gets a cut bc of their funding… but it’s not like all these companies are running their creative choices by hybe for all their music, videos, content really. It would benefit you guys to educate yourself about what you’re talking about and j get that hybe is the parent company and most influential so you like to put everything on them… but that’s not at all how it works. It’s why the groups promote completely different under the other companies even though they’re all under hybe. This is in Ador… stop using hybe as a scapegoat for something that isn’t in their hands in the first place

@@blarmy827 girl LMAO. It wasn't my intention to "put all the blame on HYBE". the way you fans will defend billion dollar companies is so weird to me. ultimately ador is under hybe. which means even if all creative control is given to ador, HYBE still has to approve everything. do you think HYBE would fund anything at all if they don't know what kind of media will be released? come on now, let's use our brains a little bit before coming at someone. HYBE, ADOR, producers, composers, the lyricists, or anyone who had anything to do with COOKIE are all to blame. I still stan literally every HYBE artists. but the company should do a better job in monitoring lyrics period. even if the intention is innocent, research should've been a thing to allow the best possible outcome for newjeans and all of their artists in the future.

@@peach1347 “hybe is a worldwide company, they should’ve been more careful of how their English lyrics would be taken.” You’re literally placing blame onto hybe for the English lyrics… not sure how you can make this statement and pretend you’re not bc you didn’t use the word “blame.” Come on, you’re not stupid and to pretend it’s not the same thing is just an ignorant deflection. No problem blaming any company when they’re at fault… but hybe isn’t remotely responsible for the creative content or rights of ador, they don’t review the songs lyrics let alone translate them and look up slang for other languages lol it’s really not that hard to understand if you educate yourself instead of arguing false points just bc hybe is a big company and it’s trendy to come for big companies even when the fault isn’t theirs to protect the company of the group that you like. Blaming hybe makes it easier to brush off their issues with this song… so ppl don’t find fault with the group and ador themselves. Hybe is not responsible for their creative freedom in the companies under them. Simple as that.
You may want to use your brain and do a little research about how these companies work. They’re all already existing companies who use their past works as references to become a part of hybe… they ABSOLUTELY DO NOT go over the lyrics of these companies who already have people who do that for themselves… they are under no circumstance responsible for the lyrics of these other companies lol the fact that you think they all run their music and videos by hybe just shows how ignorant to the business of music you truly are. Do some research and educate yourself before you come at someone with assumptions and personal bullshit lol you clearly have no clue what you’re talking about and are making baseless assumptions and trying to use them to make what you’re saying make sense. I’m speaking literal facts and you’re talking baseless assumptions. It’s impossible to understand what I’m saying with no foundation of business logistics.. but you go ahead and keep putting responsibility onto a company where they have nothing to do with it… bc you’d rather try to be right instead of understanding the facts. You ask me if I believe that hybe doesn’t check the music and content of all these other companies under them… and I don’t have to think about it bc I know that they absolutely do not lol again you’re making an assumption to fit your narrative instead of looking at the facts. You’re not equipped to even have this conversation with.. and that’s just sad .

I can see why you assume that hybe would be going over all the lyrics and content of these sub companies bc they’re using their name, but that’s just not how it works unfortunately.

This is a really good rookie group! I love their late 90’s slow groove. To address the elephant in the room…..99% of all K-pop groups debut at very young ages and what many seem to NOT realize is that both BOY and GIRL groups are catering / singing to their very own age group(s). In other words they’re singing to BOYS and GIRLS not MEN and WOMEN.

I personally don't see their outfits as inappropriate, but maybe it's just me.
My younger sister was born in 2007 and all of her friends and girls at school dress like that - I mean crop tops and such. I'm not even sure if she has any normal-length shirts.. It's 'fashion', I suppose.
I don't know if it's like that in other places, but here all the teenage girls are dressed exactly like NewJeans, so my first thought was that they're appealing to their age group. I even told my sister to watch them and get inspired to add some color to her wardrobe, because I swear she only wears one crop top in different shades of black lol
Also it's worth noting that the NewJeans' girls have protective shorts under skirts, so it's much better, more appropriate and more comfortable for them than for any 2nd or 3rd gen girl group when they debuted. I was watching their first music show appearance and all of them had these shorts on.

They have one of the safest outfits in 4th gen and still people are trying to say whatever to bring this girls down. They seem to have forgotten ive’s leeseo and all classy members. Even Wonyoung being the IT girl when she’s the same age as minji, and she debuted when she was 14. Not to mention all 2nd and 3rd gen idols who debuted in between 14-16 y/o(suzy, taemin, jk, tzuyu, hyuka and taehyun, eunchae, somi, jisung, krystal etc). I haven’t seen anyone complaining about love dive’s breakdance knowing leeseo is only on year older than hyein. People are treating this girls as if they were babies and still they are fangirling with idols who are the same age as them (Wonyoung and Minji are a clear example) The double standards are being shown very clearly

I love your reactions and thoughtful insight. As an older kpop fan, so much of what you said resonates with me. As far as the music and production goes, every single song was a huge win for me - I've been listening non-stop and there are no skips on this album. There's definitely a nostalgic feel and I like where they're going with that. At the same time, and with no judgement towards the girls themselves, I really wish the lyrics to Cookie had gone in a different direction.
Look, I think overall it seems like most of the concept, styling, lyrics, production, etc. behind this debut fits and is appropriate for their age range. The Cookie lyrics are the one outlier for me and I feel like if they had just given them different lyrics to that one song, they could have hit this debut out of the park without any controversy. All that aside, I really enjoy most all the other choices that have been made for this debut to happen and I think New Jeans is bringing something really new and fresh (but with a twinge of nostalgia in the styling/concept/music) to kpop and that's something to be proud of.

I really didn't understand the whole 'cookie' thing until someone explained to me. Bc here in Brazil if you are talking about giving/receiving cookie you are talking about getting attention( the famos 15 min of fame). So I think it is a American culture thing. Of course there is the whole problem with meaning and things lost in translations ( for what I know in korean the lyrics seems very silly and childish) so is upon their team to be aware of some details.

New Jeans has a fresh concept and it's really fun and teen love and highschool, but my issue is specially with 'Cookie'. You can say whatever you want or try to twist it, but there's definitely an inappropriate undertone to the lyrics, cookie is an obvious innuendo and the MV and lyrics do not seem to be talking about food. I wish the best for them but I hope they aren't forcing them to do weird things they don't want to. Minors doing mature concepts is not okay.

“Cookie” is good, but they should have left as little room for error, or s*xual innuendo, or misunderstanding lyrically as possible. SOME of the lyrics aren’t translated accurately, but even when translated accurately there is still room to take the song to be too mature for minors, coupled with the English lyrics. It’s the Korean lyrics together with the English that make it hard to not see duality in the song. Yes, they can just be talking about their album as a “Cookie” gifted to their fans, but the fact that it can be taken otherwise is a problem. They should be more careful with minors and leave hardly any room for interpretation than what was intended when it comes to these lyrics and future songs. So about cookie: In korean cookie does not have the same connotation that it has in english. It was not meant to sound like they were talking about what you think. They made it clear on their social media that this song is about their EP. The cookie represent their EP and they say that they baked it which means they put their songs in it. And they’re saying « boy » just to go along with their other songs. People are still going to say that the company knew what they were doing with that especially because of the Min Heejin situation but I really love NewJeans and their songs so I’m just going to assume that it was just coincidence and wait to see what they will do in the future. If that happens again then yeah it will not be a coincidence

I definitely think it could be taken another way…. But I reread the lyrics and also understand it in Korean. The first line “MADE a cookie” def helps to stray away from the innuendo people think about. In Korean the lyrics meaning is super playful and actually funny. Lastly the music video basically shows you the connection between a cookie and a CD. “Taste” and “Lookie” are used as metaphors for listening to there music. People say “we got a taste of their sound” for music as well. Or words like “sneak peak” I think not thinking too deeply helps a lot as well. This is just my opinion and how I look at it. If I’m honest I didn’t think of it sexually when I first heard it, but again, that’s just me.

Okay, listen up guys. The music industry is MORE than just music, it always has been. Looks is also a big part of it especially in the idol culture. The age most idols start at is peak age for them to start getting into the business because you don't just become an idol overnight. Many idols train for years before getting to debut, and the younger you are, the more rapport you can build and attention you can bring in. It is the reasons idols like Suzy are so well known now and have so much fame, they have built it up over years. The idol business is very nuanced and simply saying "they are too young" or some other sh*t is NOT anyone else's call to make. It is a hard world to make it in and the younger you get in, the longer your career tends to be. As I said, it isn't just music. Most artists need 'other' ways of getting attention, it isn't as simple as singing good anymore. The more visually appealing you are and the more something is pushed among other things are contributing factors to an idol's success. There is a reason the most successful actors and most successful idols are the ones who started young. BoA, IU, Suzy, Park Shin Hye and Kim Yoo Jung are all examples of that.
People tend to forget these idols have parents that have agreed to this and that the kids have agreed to this. This isn't anyone's call to make regardless of what they are singing. Now if they were to expose their genitals in the MV, that is a COMPLETELY different situation as laws would have actually been broken even if it was accidental. Besides, kids mature at different ages so applying the label of 'vulnerable' to a kid especially as old as these girls isn't fair as most of them are 16 and over whilst only one is 14 and again, they are all mature. I was 12 when I reached a high level of maturity, most adults didn't hold a candle to my level of maturity. There are 25 year olds that act like 8 year olds in clubs and bars and no one judges them, why is it fair to judge mature kids looking for an early start in their careers?

I just want to say that I've noticed for Cookie, the lyrics in Korean does not seem to be an issue in Korea. They do perform Cookie in Korean music shows. The translated lyrics are questionable for the westernized people. I also did read that cookie is another word for cd in Korea....which explains why (to me) the cookies in the mv later on were cd's in the background. I don't mind the translated lyrics to Cookie too much (since I like the other songs more anyways). If you look at it with a dirty mind then it's dirty. If you look at it the other way, it's okay. Definitely the lyrics has nothing to do with the girls' talents. Hopefully no future songs are seen as questionable again. I do hope they last a long time.

Ooh I'm glad you checked this out, I also have mixed feelings about them. I love Attention so much, my reaction was much like yours, I was shocked and delighted at the throwback sound and I love the casual mv, it's intensely nostalgic. I ascended when the chorus hit, serious goosebumps, what an incredible song! I really like Hypeboy too, and Hurt, and the sudden rollout of mvs before they even announced their names coupled with the bag album packaging was the most creative debut I've ever witnessed, with how they're taking over the charts in Korea it has clearly worked out for them too. However Cookie makes me feel icky and I wish could wipe the memory of it from my brain, not only the lyrics but the outfits and choreo and overall tone is just so uncomfortable. The lyrics are originally written in english so they have no excuse.
I am especially conflicted because I was particularly looking forward to them for years as they were Min Heejin's new group after moving from SM to Hybe (she was creative director for many f(x), Red Velvet and SHINee albums that I love), and was hyping them up to anyone who would listen. Then a huge controversy came out right after NewJeans debuted about her having photos, art and album sleeves on her apartment walls all from various films portraying exploitative relationships between older men and underage girls, and using a lot of lolita-inspired and infantilizing imagery in her previous work. Her insta had Brooke Shields who was heavily sexualised as a child as creative inspiration.
As most of her previous work had been with my favourite groups, it was devastating to hear. Her studio walls had nudes of barely legal actresses in roles playing children next to pictures of Taemin from a photoshoot she directed, as a shawol it felt awful to see, she actually didn't tell Taemin the photoshoot for his solo debut Ace would be topless in order to prevent him from working out in preparation so he would look more youthful ugh. She is the CEO of Ador and NewJeans is basically her magnum opus project, so when coupled with their ages of course I am worried.
I really hope that they are successful because the girls seem wonderful and I really love their sound so far, most importantly they have a spark, I think they could make a significant impact in the industry. I just hope that they aren't given any more questionable concepts after this and I hope that their CEO's favourite inspirations have minimal effect on their direction in the future. I'm rooting for them and excited to hear what they come out with next. Sorry for the essay, thanks for sharing your thoughts at the end, it's good to hear your perspective!

For the song cookie: Bake in Korean is 'ppang gubgi'. Burning CD in Korean is 'gubgi CD'. Both use similar sound of 'cookie'. That's why a cookie roll in at the beginning & a CD roll out at the end. Cookie in asian culture simply means baked dough. It is no fault of Koreans that it carries sexual undertone in the western culture.
Just like Korean 'nae-ga' means I. It is no fault of Koreans that it sounds like the 'N' word used in the western culture as slur against black people.

I understand how everyone (mainly in West) would perceive lyrics as "inappropriate" and that's because of western ideology where innuendos like this are quite common.
In Korea however, Cookies are common analogy for "music"/CDs.

Majority of them were exploring their love and sex life, cigarettes and alcohol, parties.. Teens are not kids. Us as adults we should protect these minor idols to have a safe and healthy work environment, and view them as teens/young adults. I know that people care for them, including me, but over-interpreting their lyrics, outfits etc make it worse. I just find it weird when people think the dirty way when it comes to young people. Just for that, I want companies to debut only adults.

If the kid next door asks for a cookie, will you sue for sexual harassment? The act of baking CDs was compared to baking cookies. And the lyrics figuratively say that we only listen to their songs. However, English-speaking people only think of the sexual meaning of cookies, even though CD rolls around in the music video and group members dance non-sexually. In addition, you should think about Korean culture while listening to K-POP, and listening to music only thinking about your own country's culture does not understand the culture of other countries.

    • @rjkpop
      @rjkpop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think you could be a little misunderstood about the concern here. This isn’t about the Korean meaning of the song, this is more towards the WAY the translation of the song was made. When the company(or whomever they direct to do so) give an English translation or whichever translation, it’s wise to keep in mind what words or slang terms may mean in other countries and how it would/could be interpreted. In the case of most Western audiences, Cookie references different things and doesn’t mean something as innocent as it does in Korean. It simply doesn’t. It isn’t “English speaking people” making it dirty, the term was and has been used that way long before this. In conclusion, I believe who ever greenlit the translation of the song are responsible. I’m not saying the girls or the song are to blame, at all. Hope this clears up any confusion or helps to put things in to perspective from a different lens. 💙
