I really liked how they did the multi-version MV's. As each has their own storyline and it's giving very much teenager. The way that they don't actually put the boy's names in the text messages but use symbols instead. It's very reminiscent of to middle school/partial high school for me; but it's very cute and I love how it's just these videos are very sweet feeling and just full of teenage butterflies and feelings.

During Attention and Hype Boy, they genuinely threw me in a time machine. I felt like watching one of those y2k teenage shows, like H20 Just Add Water, Winx Club, stuff like that. It felt like I was watching those teenage friends having fun while I'm at home eating some snacks that my mom got me, and wanting so bad to have a group of friends like that, with crushes and funny moments. I haven't felt like that about kpop ever before. Only anime (with Tokyo Mew Mew)
true, I feel like a really young teenager again (12 to 16) and this is definitely the feelings I usually or typically get in that young age I used to be in. I genuinely really love the songs, the content, the vocals, the performances, the choreography, the styling, EVERYTHING! Its all so pleasantly presented. As a kpop multifan since 2011, I really am so happy about this new group debut

Hybe just showed big3 how to debut a new group when you have the money. What a way to introduce each members. The song is really good and catchy. Not to mention they made you listen to it atleast 4x.
Hypeboy has become my current go to song i listen to it everyday and i agree it reminds me of acid/md also it reminds me a lot of early y2k rnb.
Hybe had the money but Heejin had the brains.

It's crazy to me how the company didn't approve Hype Boy at first and MHJ had to insist. It's automaticay catchy and dancey. I'm thankful that they got to release it at the end of the day.
Attention MV was shot in a thrift clothes shop called Holala! It is my friend's current workplace. It's a real store nearby Carrer Tallers in Barcelona.

Both Attention and Hype Boy were filmed in Spain but ya i agree they are aiming for a global market because that is what Min Hee-jin has said in her comments and it helps that three members speak English fluently Minji, Hanni (Vietnamese-Australian), and Danielle (Korean-Australian)

Let's just get this out of the way: the ENTIRE production/director/sound/style teams need to be applauded. This was an entire project that probably took a decent amount of time to film considering the 4 versions, several unique scenes in every version, and the editing/CGI needed for each version. Props to everyone and the members as well.

yeah, considering they went to spain to film their mvs and take their concept photos back in april and they started releasing them in july/ august, i'd say it did take a while

I know it may be weird, but every time I listen to this song I get teary-eyed. Because it just brings back memories of when I was a young teen and reminds me of when I was in high school, it’s tears of happiness of course. And nowwww, I miss it.

That's a smart move to have 4 version of mvs. So peoples will watch it for curiosity & in the same time the song will slowly grow on u bcs u heard it 4 times
I thought Hanni's is about her having a crush on the dancer and then finding out that it's actually a girl. I interpreted her smile as still being happy to meet but at the same time laughing about herself (for being so obsessed with the dancer but not even considering that it's not necessarily a guy).

@@TomMRF it is, they introduced social media relationships and the downside of it, not just real life, she had a crush on a masked person whose identity is ambiguous but she risked to meet them irl which then she found out they're not what she thought they're but still holds respect for them regardless, because it's her "daydreaming" that got her into that situation not the "no face" person's fault.

Hype Boy is definitely my fav. This group has less "idol" vibes than normal gg's which is surprisingly nice. It's fun and it's chill. I like it.

Wanna know something more interesting about their marketing. When hypeboy was released the 4 MVs were unlisted for like 48 hours or something...and the only way to view them was by watching and waiting till the end of the "intro" video,.... Personally thought it was really unique.

The marketing for them was crazy, they genuinely promoted the 3 title tracks in music shows, and the company also released a whole new app (the one you see in Hype Boy's MV) with special contents related to the MVs, stories and concepts. You could customize your own album, and even choose the outfits for the girls, for both Attention and Hype Boy (each had one of those doll designs, it was basically a dress up minigame). This is y2k done properly, somehow nothing about it reeks of instagram, which is what I just now discovered that threw me off on other y2k contents??? Anyways, a true masterpiece of a debut. Waiting for the album to drop was torture 😭 I just wanted to listen to everything on loop (which I did)

I’m wondering if they did Hyein’s storyline like that on purpose because she’s only 14, they didn’t let her crush flourish because she’s still very much a child and if that’s the case then big props to Ador/Hybe. They have done a great job of not sexualizing the girls at all and letting them be fresh and cool and youthful!
hyein’s storyline emphasizes crushes can be jerks and a waste of time. the boy looking nerdy but he mocked newjeans choreography at the end. like hyein’s prettier and she deserves better. its always the ugly boys 🥴
afaik the other actors were teens too, so it wouldn't really be that strange for ppl her age to be in relationships.

euphoria is not realistic cuz they have grown ass adults as the casts and the fashion and makeup are growns too. like im teenager and we don’t really dress up like that in school. i think people have forgotten what real teenagers look like that they assume newjeans looking too young. and i saw many kpop idols my age cosplaying as adults with thick makeups and grown outfits.
I LOVEEEEE the direction of this group! I love how they are not overly made up, usually, there will be a short hair member, or a colorful hair member in all the GG, but their team decided to keep their natural look instead of giving them the typical Kpop look. Also, the fashion and the photography are INSANE! The most important thing is the girls look like they are having a lot of fun doing these! What a breath of fresh air in the current Kpop scene!
this is probably the first kpop group i’ve genuinely been so interested in, their songs feel so refreshing
What I find coolest about hype boy music videos is that girls' romantic interests are nonstandard people. The boy Minji likes is a black boy and Hanni likes a seemingly non-binary person.
That's cool because we know how prejudiced Korea is, so it's nice to see different types of people being put into productions.

As a gen z person who follows fashion trends, this feels like a reflection of the y2k revival!! one of the many trends that took over stylistically recently was early 2000s pop artists, and their overall concept captures it really well!
Since i first heard about New Jeans i felt that this group was built for international fans in mind, all members can speak english, 2 are very fluent, alot of english lines in their songs, and alot of the MV's were shot in spain. I haven't seen a group debut like this since Blackpink.
Fun fact: the videos are supposed to be watched in order so "Danielle and Haerin" version is the last one, so it's the only one that the girls disappeared in the last shot (in the CGI platform)
I think the best part about the HYPE BOY videos is that that they were able to show inclusivity & representation. It is rare for Korean idols to be paired with foreign partners in MVs especially when they're Black (Minji). They also showed how friendship is more important (Danielle and Haerin) and that not everything are happy endings (Hyein). The highlight for me is having a love interest that may be Non-Binary or Trans. THIS IS VERY BRAVE!!! I love it. Let's normalize this in KPOP and thank you ADOR for this. As someone part of the LGBTQA2S+, I can finally have something I could identify with in KPOP.

everything about this debut is so well thought and still feels so simple somehow. They're just teenage girls singing about having teenage crushes in some songs that are chill and cool, but you can tell how much work and effort went into this whole thing

Hyein’s version ends with them making fun of the boy because he was mocking them at the party, it was why Hyein was angry.
It’s a very smart way to introduce each member . People usually struggle to know who is who when they got to know a new group.
The album packaging is so well done too
Also another thing with the marketing with Hype boy is that the MV intro, came out a day or two before all the MV's were 'officially' released- so they had all the links and you could watch all of the MV's while they were unlisted, which was insane feeling.
Then Hype boy is kinda like all the girls are 'hyping up' each one of their significant other counterparts and then they're either surprised at how much they like them (Minji and lime boy / Hanni and the dancer getting to meet) , get disappointed in them (Hyein and the asthma boy being mean about their dance / Dannielle and Haerin's guy is playing both of them)

I love how it was marketed as a global group but it worked on both Korea and the world, they’re killing it. The aesthetic is just SOOOOO good, the music is incredible, the girls are amazing performers, the concept is so unique, there’s literally nothing I dislike. I needed this in K-pop.
This has to be one of the greatest debuts of all time.

10:22 18:00 The MV is shot at various locations in Barcelona and other parts of Catalonia, Spain. The School you mention is a "La Salle School" (I think it is La Salle Bonanova). Same for Attention MV. The concert venue at the beginning is Sala Apolo in Barcelona.
Both "Attention" & "HypeBoy" music videos were shot in Spain, their debut song is actually "Cookie" which 3 out of 4 songs in their mini album are on top 10 melon charts for the whole of august after their debut. You can tell Ador went all out on this group from their Branding, Sound, Design, Fashion Aesthetics(already decked out on LV in "Attention"MV ), Promotions and Budget, they even have their own "Phoning" app to promote and interact with their fans. NewJeans is a setup for success and i'm sure everyone is excited to see what's to come in their future.
Attention, Hype Boy, and Cookie are all their debut songs btw, their only b-side is Hurt--as indicated even on the Melon app. They debuted with a triple title track, kinda like how BP debuted with double title tracks Boombayah and Whistle.
Genius of 4 version is that you are basically forced to listen to this 4 times straight. 1st time you listen you get interested about this new group and want to check out other versions. 2nd time you realize how good and catching the music and the dances are. 3rd time you are convinced that this is the Song of the Year and NJ is the best debut girl group. 4th time you become obsessed and can't stop listening and searching the internet and youtube for reactions and start commenting 😵
I've personally never understood the "they're trying to be a global group instead of a kpop group" argument. It would be like saying, "they're trying to a be global group instead of an American group." If a group is popular, it's popular, period, regardless of concept. I remember some of the first kpop songs that went viral in America were Crayon Pop's Bar Bar and Psy's Gangnam Style. Neither songs were targeting the global market. Same with Blackpink and BTS. I mean, sure, it's great if it appeals internationally, but they didn't set out going, "oh yeah, America is gonna eat this up for sure." Meanwhile, JYP was deliberately trying to target Wonder Girls to the American market, but it didn't really pan out at the time. You can't force a group to be popular overseas. It has to happen organically.
It’s not that deep. It’s just because they don’t have very strong Korean elements or they don’t do the usual Korean marketing tactics that most kpop groups or labels do. That’s why it feels like they’re a global group because the concepts and marketing styles are very western.
I love the fact that if ever they were really more pushed to a global or international market, they are still killing it domestically. NewJeans really brought something interesting on the table.

The promotion strategy (for Hype Boy) was that the intro for Hype Boy was the way you could get to the, initially UNLISTED, music videos for each of the members. After a day or two, all the videos were then listed.
Also, you are completely right that those 3 are the title tracks. As for which is the official lead single - that would be a debate. Since Attention dropped first as their first promotional activity (not to mention its huge current popularity), you could argue it is the lead single. You could also argue Hype Boy given that there are 4 MVs to introduce each member. And since Cookie marks their 'official' debut and the drop of their mini-album, you could argue Cookie as well.
When I first heard NewJeans I didn't really love their sound but it has grown on me and now these songs are getting stuck in my head and I am playing them on repeat. I have never heard a K-Pop Girl Group that sounds like this and I think that NewJeans is going to be very niche in the K-Pop Industry. STAN TALENT, STAN NEWJEANS!!!

Wow that multi-character / storyline perspective is such a cool idea! It feels almost like a choose your own adventure kind of format, at least it’s a way it could go.
Completely agree about the best way of marketing, watching different storylines of the same MV makes it really interesting but also they make you listen to the song at least 4 times in a row, it makes you more comfortable with the song and learn faster the hook of the song. I love how different they are from rookie k-pop groups, they have a retro but futuristic kind of sound, to me StayC was the best debut ever (So bad it's a masterpiece) but NewJeans it's so unique so it goes into the top debuts ever too for me. Hype boy is my favorite one because I can't stop listening to it

I love New Jeans! It’s been a long time since I really enjoyed a girl group and they won me over instantly. Their sound is so pleasing to the ears, it’s easy to listen, it’s fresh but also brings a sense of nostalgia. I’m so happy they are doing great in Korea 🥰
I feel like with the right management, marketing, and music production, NJ is gonna be big and is bound to dominate international arena like BP. It certainly helps that 3 members can converse in English not to mention they have the creativity of SM! 🔥
First, Hype Boy is most likely my most played track on Spotify by the end of the year, just so easy to listen to and replay
Second, I absolutely cannot get over how perfectly the group and ador nailed this debut. The formula was broken in how they promoted themselves, and the video and *music* production especially just cut through everything else.

And as a Barcelonian, I am so proud that a K-Pop group was here to make their entire MV series. It was also a Barcelona-based film and commercial company that shot all those music videos.

I think “Attention” is the pre-release single and “Cookie” is the tittle-track; while “Hype Boy” & “Hurt” are the other B-Side singles… (that are still promoted very well, might I add) 🙃

They have 3 title tracks and 'Hurt' is a b-side. I do believe that 'Attention' is their lead title track since it got released first. I understand why they have multiple title tracks since all three songs are title track material!

I mentioned this in my comment under the first NewJeans video of yours.
Well yes, the setting is obviously in US High School, but I don’t know if they are aiming for the US/Global audience.
Also because for 2023 HYBE in collab with Universal Music Groups is preparing the global pop group, which will be focused on this market.
I have seen comments of people being unsure about NewJeans at first because Le Sserafim debuted just a few months ago.
The key thing is HYBE Corpo. or more specifically HYBE Labels are not one big label like SMEnt.
So it’s not like if SMEnt debuted another girl group right now after aespa.
They are more like many individual labels being covered under one umbrella called HYBE Labels.
And here comes the important fact.
Although all of those labels have their own artists they should aim on different goals/music styles/group of people.
Because you don’t want to make a competition in your own house.
So it’s important to keep the difference between them.
And in this case I see it:
- Le Sserafim is the modern Kpop
- NewJeans is the old school Kpop
- The collab with UMG will be global pop (basically pop but with a few aspects of Kpop/Kpop style or production)
- And then there will be the I-Land 2 girl group and I don’t know about their style yet 😅

@@WiseSmellyLegs i can't find it but i specifically remember when they opened auditions a few years ago they wanted members from around the globe for a international appeal and for some of the members to speak english fluently

Well yes, it makes sense and it is a good reason, why there are 3 of 5 English speaking members.
On the other hand it wasn’t like they want only international members.
To me it felt like global audition to get as many people to choose from as possible.
But after PD’s words about their music video look, I am thinking there might be some interest to focus on US, that’s true 🤔🤔
I-land gg is gonna be a basic non original group just like Enhypen. Its gonna be a cookie cutter concept that will still succeed nonetheless

Newjeans has fantastic marketing that makes them stand out so much. The feel like people and not like how some people want to market idols as non human. It's very kpop still so its not weird to kpop fans. Literally everything about their styling is so how I view a couple of the people ik in still in high sfhool or early college that I think are cool. Even their hair isn't sprayed down. Their hair gets in the way during choreo, gets messy, etc. They just feel so personable. The combination of their image, sound, and marketing have the power to turn the tide of the 4th gen

I may be wrong but to me their mvs felt more center-european (like Italy/Spain/Portugal/France) than American ^^ and I'm saying this as a european who never really feels connected to american-looking highschool settings lol
Definitely. The music videos take place in Spain. Those are European looking schools. And I can definitely understand cause, same. 😂 These look much more similar to the schools I've been through than any other American-based music video/TV show/movie
This is my favorite new group! I love all their songs! I love their look and I love their talent! And they can act! I'm really really looking forward to their future work! Best debut in a long long time! I think they deserve ROTY! Just my humble opinion.
Aunque el vídeo y las canciones del mini parecen muy globales es sorprendente como funcionaron y funcionan muy muy bien en Corea desde el principio. Cuando se lanzó Attencion, estuvo en tendencias top 10 en Corea yt durante semanas hasta que salió la canción oficialmente en melOn y otros servicios. Las tres canciones principales se posicionaron en top 10 de melOn (y en otros charts K)
Luego al paso de las semanas empezaron a aparecer en Spotify top 100 y empezaron a escalar lentamente posiciones. Incluso Attencion logro entrar al top 100 de USA después de un mes.
