    I'll be honest, even setting aside the spot-on emulation of Jim, this is one of the best things Lewis has ever written, and I'd absolutely be up for more specials in this style where he talks, not about specific issues or series, but trends in the comic book industry, because I'd love to learn more about it.

      Much like what Jim does........ WWE tried to copyright one of his videos cause he used some of their footage in a video, so he commissioned a guy to make a wrestling suit, had a new theme made, new visuals, and made a wrestler persona...... That went on to actually do some wrestling in independent circuits.......

  • @TheGoldenNeil
    @TheGoldenNeil 7 ปีที่แล้ว +275

    You're completely right. I hated how they ignored the reboot thing. Something's didn't even make sense. Kyle Rayner was a Lantern, despite the fact that he replaced Hal Jordon, and that's because Hal Jordon went insane, because of SUPERMAN VILLAINS. Villains who hadn't been introduced yet!

    • @CaptainLunar1994
      @CaptainLunar1994 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      And when said villains WERE Introduced they had VERY different origins and motivations. I mean hell Cyborg Superman wasn't even Hank Henshaw and wasn't even INTERESTED in Earth! And working for Brainiac... For some reason. I didn't pay much attention to New 52 Supergirl since.... It wasn't THAT good.

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      And what about Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern? He's kind of important to the whole conceit, and several stories just in Geoff Johns's run involved him.
      A character who suddenly never existed. The Starheart? What's that?

    • @CaptainLunar1994
      @CaptainLunar1994 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Not to mention a character who was made gay for the SOLE reason of his gay son was not around anymore due to the reboot, since he would need a new origin.... Only to show up later which means he would ALREADY have a different origin and the fact Alan swore off romance forever due to his fiance dying so... He's gay.. Only you will never see him doing anything gay ever again.... Smooooooooooth.

    • @Webshooters1
      @Webshooters1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      That always bothered me about the New 52. Sometimes they would start a character off with a clean slate but for others they imported the character's prior continuity even though the events that caused that person to come into being no longer happened or exist!
      The most vexing example as stated is Batman where he supposedly is starting off new except he's not because he's had THREE ROBINS in the 10 years he's been operating and I frankly cannot buy that even by the logic of comic books not to mention Damian who shouldn't even exist at this point in his career much less Talia!

    • @CaptainLunar1994
      @CaptainLunar1994 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Kyle Rayner ALONE causes so many problems by just existing in the New 52! So just within 5 years Hal Jordan went Parallax.... For some reason since there's no Hank Henshaw as Cyborg Superman to blow up Coast City... WIPED OUT THE GREEN LANTERN CORPS! Died! Kyle became the new Green Lantern and only Green Lantern until Hal is resurrected and the Green Lantern Corps starts up again! THAT'S not even going into how some stories like Blackest Night could happen yet Black Hand with his Black Lantern Corps running around CLEARLY SHOWS it did!

    I could see the "actually commit to the reboot" working to some extent. Start with about 20-30 books rather than 52, focusing on your core/most well-known heroes (everyone who will be in the starting Justice League) and a few others who don't really interfere with it being a "Year 1" across the board (Zatanna, Swamp Thing, Hawkman, Justice Society [or at least Alan Scott]). Feature the heroes in their early years, showing most of their villains for the first time and slightly different than we remember (think The Batman cartoon). End that year with Batman getting a Robin and some other personal milestones for the rest of the heroes. Otherwise keep crossovers to a minimum. Year 2 introduces a few more books for minor but still notable heroes like The Atom, Captain Atom, Black Canary, or the original Blue Beetle as the world starts to acknowledge more and more heroes. End Year 2 with a World's Finest Batman/Superman crossover event, the biggest crossover to date in the reboot. Throughout Year 3, have increasing frequency of one-issue crossover events where heroes (particularly the future Justice League) interact with each other and use them to build up an impending threat. At the end of Year 3, have some sort of alien invasion (I'd recommend someone other than Darkseid, but whatever). This is your first mega-crossover. While everyone can get a minor part (say, fighting the alien goons that show up in their city), the core miniseries involves the founding 7 of the Justice League teaming up and taking out the alien leader. After this, they decide that the world is too dangerous to face alone, and form the Justice League, which becomes a book at the start of Year 4. Over all of this, you slowly advance characters to their pre-reboot stages, with Batman getting Barbara Gordon as Batgirl before Dick becomes Nightwing, Jason Todd is Robin but he dies, and so on and so forth. A Teen Titans with the original crew pops up around Year 5 (or, at a minimum, 6 months after the Justice League forms) and eventually begins recruiting and swapping out members to introduce Cyborg/Raven/Beast Boy and that generation of Titans. Overall, the goal is to reproduce but not perfectly replicate prior stories (so, yes, Barbara Gordon eventually gets paralyzed, but maybe she fell off a roof saving Batman's life instead of just getting shot at home) so old fans kind of know what's coming but still enjoy it. This would also give new opportunities for stories that couldn't be told well with heroes that have been doing it for years (wouldn't Court of Owls have made so much more sense as like a Year 2/3 thing, rather than a Year 10?)
    ...But I suppose it's not surprising that a megacorporation would be too impatient to take such a long-term strategy that puts off popular characters for several years and cuts into the number of books they can sell right off the bat.

    Trinity War Wasn't the best story out there, but I do love that multi-cover picture. So much so in fact, that I had my brother-in-law make a huge canvas of it. Plus, I regularly use the picture as my wallpaper.

    You got me into comics during The New 52, so I'm not as hard on it as most people, but hey, the old stories are still available for purchase. Favourites being 52, Booster Gold and Justice League: Generation Lost. That's right, you made me a Booster Gold fan. Thanks a million!

    Another problem comes down to DC's occasional "Marvel envy". In something the movies have strangely reversed, Marvel comics historically leaned a little darker than DC (outside of things like Vertigo). Not a lot darker, just a little. DC was the place that build statues to heroes in the park and had whole museums dedicated to their protectors. Marvel was the place where a publsher could print "Spider-Man is a menace" stories despite years of evidence to the contrary and still be believed.
    When you take things like that away and turn Superman into an overly emotional adolescent in his 20's, it ceases being DC. It's the easy way of "going dark" You can tell dark stories with light characters. Heck, the Power Rangers movie did it fairly decently. In Space and RPM did it even better than that. But no, we still get the idea that the only type of "flawed character" is an asshole.

    They should've started things out with Superman, follow it up with a couple of ordinary folks inspired by his example (Ted Grant, Alan Scott, Bruce Wayne, etc.), then we lay the foundation for the JSA. Stories get crazier and crazier, calling for more varied and powerful heroes, and THAT'S when the JLA is formed. Could Wonder Woman still have her origin revolve around WWII, or would she need to be introduced to Man's World via the War on Terror or something?

      Done-in-Ones took a heavy hit when the Big 2 started writing more for trade paperbacks. At that point they wanted stories that fit that kind of length which resulted in longer arcs, whether there was material there for it or not (lots of padding and decompression). I agree that they should have done everything as a done-in-one at first, maybe with a plot thread to connect along the way, but they were still bound by that mindset.

    Besides that, nailed it. A solid nailing of the style and it works really well for the subject matter too!

    Honestly, the idea of a complete reboot isn't unappealing. Imagine being able to introduce the Joker for the first time, or show Clark's first flight. These would've been great moments. Heck, it feels like Scott Snyder _wanted_ to tell those kinds of stories. The internal narration is always focused on like Batman's roots, or early events in his career. I mean, he took like an entire year to do Zero Year, for crying out loud.

    This really makes you appreciate how post crisis was handled. Granted, they didn't fully commit either (Which was built in to the concept), but the reboots like Man of Steel took the ball and ran with it, and did it very well.
    I should know, that was my era growing up and what got me into comics, and I never once felt lost with a concept from the old continuity. Byrne deserves credit, he did an amazing job laying the groundwork of a new era..

      Doc Savage I agreed, i have some problems with Byrne's work, but he did build a solid base for Superman, wich lead to pretty good storylines (i love "Exile") and stayed consisten from 86 until 99. New 52 wasn't, even if i prefer some of Morrison's ideas.

A lot of the New 52 series are among my all-time favorites, and since many got cancelled after only a few trades it’s been easy to grab them all. I know the collars get a lot of flack, but I liked them as part of a uniform. I think little items like a repeated pattern or motif, like the collars, or each wearing the same belt or boot style, convey a uniform while keeping individual costumes. I don’t like the fact that the characters all had the collars before meeting each other, though. It makes no sense they would all wear them from the beginning,

    I feel like one way DC could've made the New 52 would be to do something similar to what Marvel did with the Ultimate Universe. Instead of rebooting everything, make an imprint where you modernize and re-imagine the DC Universe for new readers. I believe they tried something like this with the All-Star label, but, aside from All-Star Superman, it didn't work out. Also, I agree they should've started from scratch with retellings of the origins instead of massive events. That way, old fans have their stories, and new fans have their stories. I have problems with how Marvel handled the Ultimate Universe (look at Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum), but they at least had a decent enough starting point that DC should've looked at when constructing their reboot.

    That's what also bothers me about Disney trying to buy 20th Century Fox, since that studios still own the rights to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four franchises. If they are going to let Marvel Studios reintroduce these iconic characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then tgey need to gives us, the audience, a fresh start. A clean slate. Start from scratch, give us a good story to tell, and just have the characters already being the kind of people and superheroes that they are today. But most of all.... *FORGET THE ORIGINS STORIES!!!* Skip the early days of how the X-Men and the Fantastic Four came to be, respectively, and just reintroduce them as superheroes already on the jobs, period.

    Really when Marvel or DC talk about "new readers", they're really talking about either old readers who've dropped out or reduced their purchasing or it's about EACH OTHER's readers. With small exceptions, the comic distribution model doesn't encourage new readers in any great numbers.
    I'd bet there are people who don't even realize monthly comics are still a thing because they haven't seen one in decades. They have a model that requires people to go looking for their product and is not something they'll run into during their regular shopping. DC made a recent attempt with the Walmart thing, but got nothing but flack from comic shops.
