Never filmed before - Pilot whales try to stop Orcas killing a Beaked Whale. The Pilot whales out number their larger counterparts, the Killer Whale as it called. Bedlam erupts in the Southern Ocean !
Make sure you check out which ones are the pilot whales before you review the action. They are also B&W but smaller and have bulbous heads.

Agree!
I like Orcas because they are so powerful compared to us but they won't hurt us.
I don't like Orcas when they torture and kill other marine mammals.
The speed of the pilot whales are unbelievable
They are called the Cheetahs of the Ocean
Was gonna say they arrived a little too late to help out that one whale. It was bleeding out BAD.
Wasn’t going to help sadly. I believe the beak whale lost its left pectoral fin.
That’s why there was so much blood in the water.
Even if the pilots were successful in driving the orcas off the beak whale.
It probably would have succumb to the grievous injury.
It was crazy watching that Orca on the left literally latch on and then swim away with a visible red chunk of flesh in its mouth, resulting in the initial blood flow. That one knew exactly what to do, and then the others follow suit.@amonraphoenix
Yes unfortunately it prolonged the death in the end
I think the real takeout though is that Pilot Whales are not intimidated by the Orca ... my new heroes !
@@amonraphoenix Yeah, even if it managed to get away, it was definitely doomed from just blood loss.
Those vampire birds were having a feast.
Right! The beaked whale was like, “please let me die.. get away, gulls!” Or petrels, albatrosses, whatever they are.
Pilot whales hate killer whales
new to me, I thought Humpbacks were the only ones that will protect other species from Orcas...seriously, have trouble seeing the pilot whales
I hate Orcas too.
There is no way to know if an animal can experience the emotion of hatred.
@@drk321My dog hates raccoons.
@@drk321even animals have emotions. Science already proven it
Orcas fear and respect pilot whales because of their speed. They are known as cheetahs of the sea.
Is not because that, is because pilot whales produce a sound in a frecuency that causes orca brain to go brrrr because hard pain, the pain is that intence that orcas cannot do nothing more than totally run for their lifes once they hear those "screams", literally orcas feeling is that they gonna die from a headache... And as you say, fight back is hard because pilot whales are so fast to be chased, but mainly dont even chase because the sound make them feel huge pain and his brain is brrr so they can't even think properly with that pain, so orcas just run away.
Can you post a reference to that research please ? I am genuinely interested

@@johnmontoya1569 sperm whales do that for sure but am not sure that is true for pilot whales
It is odd that the much smaller pilot whales were able to chase the Orcas off their quarry after they made the kill. Great footage.
Pilot whales have very large pods. They outnumber the orca most of the time.
Meh, intimidation can be prevalent in a variety of natural circumstances. Doesn’t matter how intelligent you are - seeing as how often humans get intimidated by even smaller things.
The echolocation sounds produced by the pilot whales are very hurtful to orcas. That's the only reason they run
@@Reggies-ii9xk really? orcas hunt humpback whales, whose singing has to be stronger than the pilot whales. sorry, your comment just doesn't make sense to me.

I understand this is nature, but given that beaked whales aren't plentiful, it's sad to see.
Deep divers that are rarely seen does not mean that they are not plentiful. 🐬 Their elusive nature spared them from being targeted by whalers in the past. They are definitely not endangered like some of the heavily hunted great whales.
@@falcosparverius1 Nonsense, sperm whales are the deepest divers and yet got hunted by whalers. What spared these ones from whalers will be their smaller size making them not worth it, plus not traveling in large pods as well.... anything in the great oceans not traveling in large pods is going to be 'elusive' just like some poor sucker adrift in a life raft is 'elusive'... its because the ocean is so large, not elusiveness.
It’s not nonsense… beaked whales are the deepest divers and for the longest time, even more than sperm whales…which spend much more time at the surface. I mean, why do you think we know more about sperm whales than we do about beaked whales? And why else were sperm whales hunted so much? Because as I said, they are known to spend far more time at the surface. They have been documented diving deep multiple times each day to hunt, then coming up for air briefly, and diving down again. Beaked whales dive and stay down for a while, then they surface at another location… sperm whales hang out for hours in one spot usually-from what many people have witnessed, at least-including scientists and whale watchers. They hang out, grab some air, and dive for food. Then they cine back up and surface at the same spot. So basically they’re somewhat more easily monitored. Slightly more predictable, until they swim away of course… they’re definitely mysterious, and there’s plenty we don’t know, but compared to beaked whales, we know a LOT more about sperm whales because they’re not as shy. They’re huge, bigger than beaked whales, and definitely dive deep, but they spend considerably MORE time at the surface.
For as mysterious as sperm whales may be, there are countless documentaries and whale-watching videos about them, about their behavior, their loud echolocation that can kill you, how they sleep vertically underwater… we don’t know hardly ANYTHING like that about any of the beaked whales simply because they spend much more time in the deep. They’re smaller and that makes them slightly less confident probably. Hence why some of the rare footage that exists of Baird’s beaked whale, for example off of Monterey, shows them in a pod of 20-25 individuals, swimming in a row, horizontally, side by side next to each other… as if they’re worried about orcas or great whites when they come up to the surface. So they stick together.
@@mystikmind2005 Tangentially, elephant seals (males specifically) are dive deeper than sperm whales!
@@vinemp No, the record is supposedly 2388m but most individuals cannot and or will not dive that deep.... but it is a regular activity for sperm whales as a species to dive deep.
Pilot whales are underrated
I didn't see anything to be honest! 😢

Orcas are unpleasant.
What are you saying in a dog-eat-dog world?
A lot of times when Orca wound a prey the will just let it bleed out and come back to eat vs. maybe getting injured or hurt trying to quickly kill prey
The music. What were you thinking?
I was thinking this a natural wild life high tempo scene .... It is not for me to cast foreboding, dramatic music over it just because it would accord with peoples sadness in relation to the event ... I try to observe and expose not judge what is wild. Hope that makes sense. Please send a link to what music you would choose and I can try it ?
Okm :))) bravo …bravo Pilot whale is a HERO
What species of Beaked whale is that?
I think it's a strap toothed whale, also called mesoplodon layardii
It's a rare species of whale called "Deceased"
Why are orcas afraid of pilot whales?
Pilot whales are one of the loudest mammals. They produce intense sound waves that irritate orcas.
Sheer numbers in most cases but they are fast and have sharp teeth ... They are called the of the ocean
A valiant effort by the pilot whales, but honestly, too little, too late! 🫤 The beaked whale was likely dead, just from blood loss alone, very soon after this video was filmed. I’ve seen various orca videos, shark attacks, etc., but never one like this, where the blood is VISIBLY leaving the body. You can see pints of blood flowing, flowing, flowing, right out… the beaked whale will simply be fatigued and lose blood to all vital organs and that’s it. By the time the pilot whales arrived, the beaked whale was probably like, “Thanks, but just let me die in peace,” lol. And the orcas too, “Are you done yet! Let me die!” And same thing with the annoying birds! Haha, like, get the F outta here… let me bleed out & die, bitches!

Orca do they prey dirty 😅
The way the whale was bleeding, any help was probably too late anyway.
people are saying orcas only swim away because they're outnumbered. hahahahaha!
the irony
I didn't view any pilot whales in this video that were supposed to be defending that poor breaked whale being killed by those killer whales according to your title for this video.
Apparently, pilot Wales use their echos or whatever its called, so I'd love to hear sonar of this whilst it happens

Someone needs to get to the bottom of this. How do pilot whales defeat orcas? There has to be more to this than speculation. Large pods? Intimidation? How do we know? Do individual pilot whales have a weapon that's greater than an orca's?
A solo pilot whale aint gonna do shit to an orca hardware wise, but what they do that orca hates is clicking, it causes migraine to the orcas. Also pod capacity, they usually in a 30+ and can even reach a hundred, while Orca pod is just in 10ish range.
Clicking that gives orcas a headache? Is there proof?
@@davidhunternyc1I'm not sure about the clicking but there are 2 other reasons I'll mention here
1. They are faster, so fast they're nicknamed cheetah of the sea.
2. They can swim much deeper.
These two factors allow them to quickly surface from under an Orca pod, and use their heads as a battering ram against the Orcas belly.
The Pilot Whales are usually so deep below them, and travel so fast that the Orcas don't notice in time
So in total there's 4 reasons
(I think)
1. Much larger pods (up to 100)
2. Clicking? (Guess it's similar to sperm whales clicking or Sonar)
3. Swim in deeper depths
4. Swim faster
As for how we know these things, radar/sonar, tagged animals, or our own eyes.
Even normal boats owned by citizens can have radar that detects things on the sea floor.
Big fishing rigs and military boats have things like Sonar equipment and they can see depths a submarine cant reach
@@ZverseZ Wow, thank you for the explanation. Fascinating. Using their heads as a battering ram? Hmm.... but orcas are very smart too and they don't see it coming? Also, one on one, it seems that orcas have the advantage. Is the study of pilot whales in its infancy? Not too much is know how they drive orcas away, though your thoughts seem reasonable.
I have heard that orcas are the "wolves of the sea"...
but the pilot whales are the leopard of the sea.
only time where sharks make themselves scarce when there is blood in the water
There were plenty of sharks there as well. At the time a huge bronze whaler surface just below me on the back of the boat. Apparently they do keep their distance further down in the water column though.

There's to many orca and there just like a wolf pack like that the ending was only way it could have ended when you see that big female orca in national geographic she was a grandmother 69 years old when it ramed the great white shark the shark didn't know what hit it it was one of the fastest ramming I've ever seen on film just the size of her and her weight traveling that fast shark didn't know what hit it just pure force when orca are in a pod say a dozen or so there's much bigger pods but just a dozen together hunting as smart as they are nothing can get the pod and they usually always get what they hunt
Transient orca King of ocean, and stupid pilot whales some times die for orca 😁
They only flee to safeguard the most vulnerable members of their flock if the flock was composed of healthy male in their prime the flock would simply rampage through these pilote whales.. they are not scared but considerate..

Hard to see any pilot whale fins. If two male Humpbacks had come that would have helped, but that Beaked whale lost a lot of blood. 😢. (Edit: I did see two pilot whales after rewatching a third time)
Yes they look similar - They both have saddle markings on backs, both have eye patches only Orcas are bigger and brighter. Pilot whales are smaller and have rounded Bowling Ball heads and also dorsal fins that are very curvey like a Surfboard fin. Hope that helps everyone.
@@aeroshotlifeit was hard to make them out at first, but a third rewatch I was able to see two PWs. Another poster highlighted where they where and the time frame the PWs appeared to try and help the Beaked Whale. They really came in there like a force and in a sizable number. I guess Humpbacks and Pilot Whales are the helpers of the sea. Though I realize Orcas play a vital role, and I am no fan of death. It is one thing we all struggle with as human beings it seems. 😢
Yet the killer whale still managed to kill the dolphin. So it didn't change anything

They are the only predators that regularly scare off Orcas.
Pilot whales are faster and have sharper teeth than the killer whale. Also pilot whales will ram into a killer whale with massive force. I couldn't tell if the all the blood was from the braked whale or one the orcas
