A very noble and courageous animal! Imagine holding off a pod of orcas for hours like that! A large sea lion is a very dangerous animal. The orcas know that well.
Oh my God, what a tremendous hunting operation. If you pay attention, you will notice that the orca attack on the sea lion is in groups. There are always two or three orcas who perform a camouflage operation and swim quickly towards the orca and hit the water with their tails in order to prevent the sea lion from being clearly seen, and at the same time the third or fourth orca strikes the sea lion. What an amazing teamwork.
Their coordination was extra ordination. It was really on display 2:15 a pair of orcas drive past the sea lion to entice it to turn as it tries to bite them then perfectly timed 3rd orca comes in a up angle (so it is hidden) to hit the sea lion from the side he just exposed by turning to bite the first 2. Incredible.
@@armaletalia3254 I rather be in with orcas. They are not dumb brutes, for some reason they respect humans and they have never attacked us in the wild. Only captive orcas have attacked people.

As a kid fishing off Catalina Island back in the 60's in our family boat, my dad saw some kind of commotion near shore. He drove over to have a better look and we discovered a pod of orcas had corned a pod of dolphin in a little cove. The ocean turned red with blood as the killer whales drove the dolphin into the shallow water with no escape. I will never forget the high pitched ‘screams’ the dolphin made as they became the hunted prey that day.
Superbly done on capturing all the footage you did Josh, this was one of the best videos I've seen of Orcas hunting and attacking a Sea Lion, and what an astounding battle put up by both the Sea Lion and Orcas it was. Thanks so much for sharing Josh...Tips Fedora.
@2:19 you can clearly see how the orcas sent out two small flankers on each side to distract the sea lion, only for the large one to come in right after and hit him like a freight train!!! Absolutely incredible
These overhead drone shots really provide perspective to how the orcas coordinate their ramming. Seems like its the females which does most of the actual hitting. Maybe because they are a little smaller than the males and thus are more maneuverable and can turn quicker and faster. In that aspect, they remind me of lion prides where lioness do must of the hunting. Although unlike lion prides which is often lead by a dominant male, orcas are led by the females, if I am not mistaken.
They really do! What I found most interesting was how CAREFUL the Orca were with their assault on the Sea Lion. How many passes did they make on it that they bailed on and dodged out of the way for every one that hit? That Sea Lion was quite the fighter! Yes, the Orca pods are Matriarchal. All the females in a pod will usually be related to each other; Mother/daughter/cousin/grandmother, etc. The males will also hang out in their mother pods, but they'll go to other pods to mate, and then usually come back after.
I didn't realize until recently that a sea lion was among some of the most formidable Apex predators. They honestly terrify me, lol. I wish he would've hid on the boat (like some do). I absolutely understand that everything has to eat. He had to know as he hid against the boat his day was up. Everyone is right, a warrior spirit, definitely wouldn't want to bump into him on a dive. He decided if hes going, hes not going w out a fight. That's a good meal, feeds the whole pod. Fly free warrior lion!! Bless all Gods beautiful creations ❤
@@picturemerollintk4057I don’t think this had anything to do with territory. This was a predator vs prey situation. Sea lions are more agile than orcas, but orcas are faster, smarter, and MUCH bigger/stronger. Which is why it is so impressive he lasted that long against a whole pod of them.
@@picturemerollintk4057 The sea lion couldn't escape, if he tried to swim away the orcas would just attack on his back, so he had to stay alert to where they were all the time and counter attack fast enough when they approached him. Thats why he didn't swim away, he couldn't.
Wow. Incredible footage. Thanks for sharing. I don't think anyone could say those Orcas didn't earn that meal. And even though it was a big sea lion, those Orcas I bet spent a lot more calories than they gained, considering the number of them, over 3 very active hours, it took to finally bring him down. Really shows just how much it takes to just survive in the wild. Again, great video !
Whoa! Superb recording! It's amazing the sea lion could battle for so long. But , the last bit of aerial video, followed by the last part taken from the boat showed the sea lion moving too slow to last much longer. I'd think the sea lion's greater maneuverability would enable it to progressively make its way towards the shoreline as it dodges orcas. Do the orcas forcibly prevent the sea lion from approaching the shore?
Thank you! I think that the Orca kept him in a defensive stance, because he never really tried to swim to shore, because they kept on popping up in front of him. The shore was about a mile away, but if he were to sprint there he could have made it in less than five minutes. I think the Orca have plans if that happens though. Maybe if he were to try, he'd open himself up to attack more?
@@AlaskaWhaleanddronetours Thanks for the reply. It seems like a sea lion facing a pod of orcas MUST sense that it cannot remain accessible to the pod indefinitely and survive. If the pod breaks off the attack for a minute, even 15 seconds, it should get its bearings and make a beeline for the shore. P.S. I've been to Alaska four times. Glacier Bay, Prince William sound, Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, St. Petersburg, Skagway. It was wonderful each time, but each trip lasted only ~ten days.

Orca have never been known to attack people in the wild. Which means that either it hasn't happened, or there were no survivors to tell the story. In captivity though, Orca have gone psycho (because they are kept alone in tiny pools) and have killed multiple trainers. Sea Lions have been known to attack people, but out of aggression or territoriality. I heard a story in Petersburg AK of a sea lion that was fed by people attacking a diver who was working on a boat, grabbing him and dragging him to the bottom and bursting his eardrums. He got out of the water and was shook up but otherwise fine.

@@Apprentice_life You are welcome, thank you for watching!
Incredible.
Yeah, frankly I'd rather be in the water with a shark than a pod of orcas. At least with the shark there's a chance of surival. None with the orcas.
@@armaletalia3254 I rather be in with orcas. They are not dumb brutes, for some reason they respect humans and they have never attacked us in the wild. Only captive orcas have attacked people.

Despite it being a sad ending for the sea lion, we must pay full respect to its will to survive for its enduring efforts to fight against all odds. This is rule of nature
I always support the hunter. But in this event, if there's a warrior, bully, fearless one, it's by far the male sea lion. Its rivals are the smartest, the strongest and the most numerous. Even dead, it deserved every sympathy. Also, Thanks for footage.
Absolutely! It was never a fair matchup, but he never surrendered. Thanks for watching!
No.
He had no choice
Yep full respect to him, Steller sea lions are the strongest of the sea lion species by far, some as large as the average great white and in groups have even been known to successfully repel orcas.
@@AlaskaWhaleanddronetoursmy opinion is that the Orca’s engaged in a training exercise. I’m positive they could have killed him a lot sooner.
All I can say is WOW !! Amazing footage, toughest Sea Lion I ever saw. In the end the Sea Wolves got him poor fella.
It's the ugly side of nature, but it's still amazing!
It's nature and they have to eat it's all natural too sad and bad that we humans can't leave nature and the oceans to be in its natural state. At the rate we're going there won't be many more animals left in the ocean as we continue to be pollute with no abatement
In Alaska, the bigger problem is the factory Pollock Trawlers. They killed 10 orca in 2023, and their bycatch (dead fish and animals they threw back because it was the wrong species) is astronomical.

@2:19 you can clearly see how the orcas sent out two small flankers on each side to distract the sea lion, only for the large one to come in right after and hit him like a freight train!!! Absolutely incredible
It's brilliant how they coordinate, and super impressive when you see how water visibility is only about 10-15 feet!
thank you Wild Alaska for your time and drone battery life. i really enjoyed.
Sea Lions are my new fave animal.
Well then clearly you're not a penguin.
@@melissachartres3219 maybe I am a very depressed penguin
Yes , they are matriarchal societies.
2:16 2 distract the sea lion with false charges while the 3rd comes in for the actual blow. Amazing! Extremely smart creatures.
It's brilliant how they work. Careful, with precision and planning. The Sea Lion didn't even know how doomed he was.
He knew it! But decided to try anyway...The same i would do!@@AlaskaWhaleanddronetours

Excuse my ignorance but why didn't the Sea Lion slowly make his way to shore?
Did anybody else? Want the seal to escape unharmed!?
I did
He had the chance to escape . It was territorial. The lion chose to fight to death
@@MiddleAgedBob Have you ever seen a prey not trying to escape? I haven’t
Excellent footage!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!

Fantastic shots. Would an orca or sea lion attack a person?
Orca have never been known to attack people in the wild. Which means that either it hasn't happened, or there were no survivors to tell the story. In captivity though, Orca have gone psycho (because they are kept alone in tiny pools) and have killed multiple trainers.
Sea Lions have been known to attack people, but out of aggression or territoriality. I heard a story in Petersburg AK of a sea lion that was fed by people attacking a diver who was working on a boat, grabbing him and dragging him to the bottom and bursting his eardrums. He got out of the water and was shook up but otherwise fine.
